Modern Slavery . Issue 1, 3407

Thankfully in this day and age Slavery and the slave trade is a huge taboo and it outlawed everywhere except in Deltaria, Watuni, and Malivia.

-Since 3504 Malivia has been ruled by the “Children of Wrath” an extremely religious group. Since their grasp on power they have enacted slavery due to their religious beliefs of weakness and sacrifice. They have oppressed all mainstream Gerajans since their climb to power.

-Deltaria is under the rule of a Czar. Through bloody war the royalty of Deltaria gained power. Only recently (3504) has it returned to its policy of slavery seeing it as “the most natural and God-given institution”. They first relied mostly on POWS as slaves but recently they have enslaved North Utembs. The Czar sees them as “dark skinned peoples who are bound to serve them”. Deltaria’s laws have been growing more grotesque over the years.

-Wantuni has possibly the worst human rights record in modern terra. Slavery is the policy of the minority majatran race, who rule over the nation. They completely disregard Women’s rights, religious freedom, rights of other races, LGBT rights, etc. Wantuni is under the tyranny of an a few powerful Majatrans who keep power through racial oppression and religious theocracy. Only time will tell if equality will reach Wantuni.

Slavery is as unacceptable as it gets and we urge change in these three nations

Father Vladan Martinek: Zealous demagogue or human rights champion?
by Radomíra Sasha
May 3509

Image
Father Vladan Martinek

Deltaria's Father Vladan Martinek, leader of Hosiany Národná Strana and a priest of the Terran Patriarchal Church, is an unlikely beacon of hope for the international human rights movement. His austere Hosian views frequently smack of intolerance, as when he advocated a law banning women from divorcing their husbands, successfully campaigned for restrictions on non-Hosian religious groups and suggested driving homosexuals out of the Deltarian army. "Liberal" and "politically correct" he is certainly not. In fact, he is on record asserting "Good government must be firm government, and too much democracy, equality and civil rights is rarely a good thing". Even his admirers sometimes admit his attitude is impractical and more suited to the next world than this one. So why are so many human rights activists, both inside and outside Deltaria, pinning their hopes on such an unlikely figure?

There is a phrase which often falls off the lips of international affairs experts at conferences: "Deltaria is not like other countries". And it isn't. Notoriously, Deltaria is home to starving peasants, slavery, ethnic and family blood feuds, civil war, violent secessionist regional breakway groups, terrorism, coups, torture, state brutality, religious intolerance, child soldiers, beheadings, impalements, gang rapes and just about every other horror one could imagine.

Image
An artist's impression of Deltaria's last Head of Government, impaled after falling out with the Czar

Martinek is scarcely a liberal democratic champion of civil rights, but he is, perhaps, the closest thing Deltaria has to one. Alone amongst the leading political figures of that nation, he inveighs against the establishment for its harsh treatment of the poor, its corrupt judicial system, its internecine infighting, its continuing acceptance of the slave trade and, most of all, its callous use of child soldiers in the ongoing war against Zardugal. And in Deltaria,"speaking truth to power" takes a lot of guts, because critic after critic has found himself murdered, beaten up or driven out of the county. So far no move has been against Martinek, though, perhaps because the regime recognise he has growing support, not only amongst the peasants and the labourers, but in high places in the Church, and increasingly even within the nobility itself.

In this writers' judgement, the political rise of Father Vladan Martinek is probably, on balance, a good thing. When the next session of the Deltarĭsko Věšte is formed is convened in 3511, his Hosiany Národná Strana faction is likely to emerge as a force to reckon with - although whether it will be able to take control remains to be seen. Our support for this group should be cautious and conditional, however, as their excessive Hosian zeal means they cannot be entirely trusted to get civil rights issues right, especially when it comes to issues of gender, religious freedom and sexual orientation.

TERRA EXCLUSIVE: 14 million Kalopians murdered by Wantuni Hegemony
by Efimia Metaxas
November 3509

Image
Uncovering a mass grave in southern Sessold. One of many disturbing photos included in the report.

Days after the Wantuni Hegemony regained control in Wantuni (formerly Kalopia), the short-lived Kalopian National Party government was due to release a devastating report outlining how up to 14 million Kalopians had been murdered during the Hegemony's previous spell in power between 3476 and 3508. Two to 4 million Kalopians, it estimates, have fled the country. The study, conducted by officials at the Interior Ministry in conjunction with top academics at the University of Hephaestus, further concludes that the Kalopian proportion of the population has fallen by a dramatic 17% since the Hegemony first took power.

Emmanouil Stephanidis, a former middle-ranking civil servant in the Interior Ministry, felt the report was so important that, at risk to his own life, he arranged to smuggle it out of the country in the days after the Hegemony retook power 4 months ago. Tragically, the new regime discovered his actions, capturing and executing him when he was just miles away from escaping to the Soletian side of the border.

Terra Human Rights Watch (THRW), a Dranland-based organisation, has described the report as providing "certain, documented and indisputable evidence that the Wantuni Hegemony is guilty of ethnic genocide on a terrifying scale". "When will the rest of Terra react and take action?" their statement added.

In this writer's view, it is time for the nations of Terra to reconsider the whole concept of war. Traditionally, war has been fought over disputed territory or over issues of national security, but is there not also a case sometimes for fighting a war of humanitarian intervention? Many of Terra's leaders will not warm to such an idea, but such wars may be necessary. After all, was it really necessary for 14 million Kalopians to die whilst the whole of Terra sat back and did nothing?

Efimia Metaxas is a human rights activist from Wantuni/Kalopia, who fled the country in 3498 after being tipped off that the police were about to raid her home. She now lives in Fairfax, Dorvik, where she works for a law firm and lives with her husband, four children and dog Benji.

IHRM Issue two, 3510

Looking into Saridan
The Country of Dranse Republiek Seridjan (Saridan) is a country where democracy still struggles to take root. One can expect that from the Poor, rural, extremely Hosian country that it is. The country has a history of corruptness and strong authoritative power has used to keep power. Lack of expression and free speech keep citizens( or shall we say saridans since only wealthy landowners are citizens). All outside information is blocked and only state media is allowed.
Image
As Early as 3497 this internment camp along with 47 others were established on the island of Sint Pietereiland. It kept all people of Bandaranaike or Jakanian nationality. Today Jankanians have been freed and 12 camps have been abandoned. However due to lack of action or interest the Badarans are still stuck on the island, Unable to leave. The political situation in Saridan is unstable but not critical. Human rights abuses are numerous in Saridan but can be changed. We call on the international community and local organizations ,like the union of Majatran nations, to pressure Saridan into freeing the imprissoned Badarans. In addition we call for more aid to be sent to the country by nations and for more transparency any so as to escape corruption.

With War over aid must be given to civilians
With the closing of the War numerous civilians in Deltaria, Cobura, Zardugal, Selucia, Vanuku, and Jelbania are left hopeless. Many have lost their home and many now live in refugee camps in Jelbania and Cobura. The coast of Majatra is destroyed with Coburan towns burned, Jankanian towns destroyed, and Zardic and deltarian cities bombed to rumble. Jelbania is left with thousand of refugees from Zardugal, Vanuku, and a few from cobura who are now homeless. Aid must be given to Civilians in all affected nations to rebuild their lives. We also call for the terra community to give aid to the lake Majatra area to rebuild itself.

Deltaria's Slave Trade must be stopped says leaders of IHRM

Image
The IHRM announces that it will lobby nations to start action against Deltaria's notorious slave trade. Mona Rivet, a long time spokeswomen for the IHRM, has begun a international trip around terra. She will be lobbying the Majatran union and Artanian union and other organizations for support. " This is no longer acceptable and we will not stop still all slaves are free" says Rivet. " We ask for nations to give sanctuary to slaves freed from Deltaria. We also ask that all nations ban the import or export of slaves from Deltaria. In addition we will lobby nations to give aid and possible peacekeepers to Deltaria to support reform of Deltaria which is in a unstable state currently".

Special Issue: We are under attack

Our mission to end the slavery has been progressing and we successfully got the notorious slave trade route from Utempo to Deltaria banned. Unfortunately while our spokesperson was in Aloria, Dorvik issued a warrant for her arrest, claiming she was a spy. Dorvik is a free nation and it receives high standards in our democracy index but political corruption keeps the nation is the lower end of the "stable democracy" bracket. Mona Rivet was criticizing the Artanian neutrality on the slave trade right before issuing of the warrant. Zardugal and Dorvik have historically bad relations. By claiming Rivet was a Zardic spy they could take down two strong international pressures at once. The country forced our Spokesperson to a become a political refugee and is now virtually trapped in Dranland unable to return to her home. They raided our offices harassing and terrorizing our workers. Most were deported back home, some were deported to nowhere because they were in fact Dorvik citizens. Some however are still taken hostage in the country. The same situation is erupting in Dundorf and in numerous nations workers have left for their own safety. Please support our efforts for global human rights and become a International human rights movementer today.

OOC: For reference, the Dorvish and Zardics have never really had much relations but when they did they were actually good. Dorvik was involved in the Southern Hemisphere War on the side of Zardugal and was one of the only nations which came to aide Zardugal against Indrala and others. So, I imagine the Zardics would be somewhat appreciative of the Dorvish for what they had done to help them out in the past. Granted, you can say whatever you want to say but that doesn't make it truth. I just wanted to throw that bit of information out there.

Thanks!

Gays fear for future in Martinek's Deltaria

by Radomíra Sasha
March 3519

Image
Jabari Kiprotich (left) & Luboš Havlíček (right)

On February 14th 3508, Jabari Kiprotich and Luboš Havlíček finally got married at a registry office in the city where they lived, Hadsingojer, which then had a reputation as one of Deltaria's most gay friendly cities. "We'd been putting it off for months because we didn't want all of the hassle of organising the reception," says Luboš, "but in the end our friends agreed to arrange it all for us and it was a fantastic day - the best of my life". Life was going well for them, then. They both had good jobs, and felt relatively accepted in society. Jabari's Utemban ethnicity sometimes raised eyebrows when people saw them together. In a society where most Utembans are slaves, people have a tendency to look down on anyone with black skin. In fact, Jabari himself used to be a slave to Luboš's father, until a love-struck Luboš, after some difficulty, persuaded his old man to free him.

Then, in 3508, a rising politician known as Vladan Martinek passed a law to legally dissolve their marriage and ban same-sex unions. "We were disgusted," says Jabari. "But still, things weren't so bad at that time - we knew we loved each other and would always be together, whatever the government thought of us."

The social and political climate became much more hostile towards gays and lesbians after Martinek's Hosiany Národná Strana faction swept to power in October 3513. "You could feel the change instantly - as soon as Martinek came in," says Jabari. "People started looking at you and treating you differently. And the folks who previously left you alone became bold, and started insulting you and pushing you around."

In September 3515 the government's notorious Anti-Homosexual Bill was passed, banning gays from the military and making homosexuality a criminal offence - albeit not one to be prosecuted. "We thought at first that this wouldn't affect us, because we're not in the army," says Luboš. "But almost immediately, the whole attitude of the police and the authorities changed. We were treated like criminals, even though we hadn't done anything. The cops kept raiding and searching our house, and pulling us over in the car - just for the hell of it. Then we started having trouble with gangs of extremist, Hosian youths who kept harassing us - throwing things at our windows and shouting at us as we went in and out of the house. And you can imagine what the police were like - they were absolutely useless. The worst point came when I was locked up by the police for 9 days because one of the youths made a false complaint about me sexually molesting him. That police cell was awful. They gave me hardly any water, even though it was burning hot. In the end they released me without charge, but I really thought I was going to die."

After the police released him, Luboš and his partner fled the country for Zardugal, with the money and help of Luboš's father. "We just couldn't take it any more," says Jabari. "I just know that if we stayed in Deltaria, we'd have ended up dead."

Getting reliable news and information out of Deltaria is not an easy task at the moment because of severe media restrictions, but according to our best sources, the situation for sexual minorities has, if anything, deteriorated further since Luboš and Jabari were driven out 12 months ago. The Hosian street gangs are becoming more dangerous, and the authorities show little sign of wanting to challenge them. Two months ago radicalised Hosian youths smashed up perfectly law-abiding Indralan restaurants in a notorious "Day of Carnage", but the Justice Minister only responded by saying there would be no prosecutions.

"If they can get away with that towards the Indralans, then it is only a matter of time before they do exactly the same to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community," reflects Jabari. "And if Martinek gets re-elected later this year, you can bet your life he will persecute us much worse than he has so far."
