PRESS RELEASE: The death penalty needs to be abolished

Postby bluegiraffe » Wed Mar 15, 2017 1:01 pm

Press release from the office of Media Officer Yoo Jin Nue
October 4180

The Social Justice Coalition call for the abolition of the death penalty

The social justice coalition are calling on the government of Free Dranland to pass a bill proposed by Nick Wilson, party leader for the abolition of the death penalty. Nick Wilson commented:

The death penalty has no place in a civilised society. It is immoral and exhibits a retributive and punitive trend that does nothing to decrease or prevent offending

The SJC Justice spokesperson, Andreas Elias continues:

There is no evidence that the death penalty for capital crimes does anything to offending rates and the idea that it acts as a deterrent is well documented as a fallacy. We also need to consider our ethical position when we consider the death penalty, a civilised society should not kill.

Legislation in all other areas of justice have shown an intolerance toward corporal and capital punishment. Our extradition policy prevents extradition to places where capital punishment is used. Our laws legislate against torture and acts of cruelty towards people. Andreas Elais continues:

Our position on the death penalty needs to catch up with other legislation that creates sentiment around capital punishment. The abolition of the death penalty is an important step in sending out a clear message.

The SJC believes Free Dranland should move towards becoming one of the majority of countries that see the death penalty as immoral with no place in a civilised and progressive society http://classic.particracy.net/viewvariable.php?variable=DEATH_PENALTY. We are calling on other nations to support us in lobbying our government for the abolition of the death penalty. Andreas Elias concludes:

We and we believe the people feel that we need to move away from capital punishment as part of being a progressive society. We call on the government to pass this bill when it reaches the voting stage. To not pass this bill would be sending a clear message on the value of a life in Free Dranland

The bill, dated July 4180 is currently in debate in the house and can be viewed here http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=509348

SJC urges new Government to consider death penalty

Postby bluegiraffe » Thu Mar 16, 2017 1:24 pm

The Social Justice Coalition call on the government to allow the abolition of the death penalty
Press release from the office of Media Officer Yoo Jin Nue
April 4181

The abolition of the death penalty is certainly a cause worth fighting for. Our bill gained significant support before the elections and we wish to build on this support following the result of the election. Our last press release http://forum.particracy.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7195#p112272 and lively debate http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=509348 on the topic shows the many reasons when Free Dranland as a nation must continue to resist and fight against the existence of the death penalty in our modern society. Nick Wilson, Party Leader continues:

The death penalty is frankly abhorrent and has not place in a modern society. The potential for the state to mistakenly take an innocent life as the result of a miscarriage of justice is too great. By having a death penalty in our legislation, we are making a painful statement on the value of human life in Free Dranland. This praice must stop, and we must join the more progressive organisations in justice without capital punishment.

Continuing to campaign for the abolition of the death penalty

Party leader Nick Wilson has asked to bring this issue in front of the civil rights council, in order to highlight internationally the impact of capital punishment in Free Dranland and to call publically, on the international stage, for an end to this practice.
