The Free World Observatory is a Pontesian think tank and research centre, dedicated to committing studies to the cause of defending the dignity of all living beings, primarily on the Majatran continent. It was funded on the behest of Princess Veronica, the current Pontesian heir apparent, as a way for monitoring the situation on the continent from a holistic and Majatran values-perspective. Her Serene Highness had this to say at the inauguration:

It is an honour for me to present a capable institution to promote our values. I have no doubt it will defend our dignity and honour, and uphold the right of our peoples to live according to their own bioculture, and promote peace, tolerance and understanding through advancing democracy in the framework of Majatran values.

First thing on the agenda will be the publication of a study of the Animal Rights situation on the Majatran continent, which will be followed by human rights and civil liberties, from a Majatran values-perspective.

REPORT: ANIMAL RIGHTS IN MAJATRA

The Free World Observatory has conducted a study of the legal situation concerning animal rights across the comment. This is their result:

Civilised

Pontesi: 8/11
Selucia: 7.5/11
Cildania: 7.5/11

Partly civilized

Badara: 6.5/11
Istalia: 6.5/11
Coruba: 6/11
Vanuku: 5.5/11
Kafuristan: 5/11
Kalopia: 4/11

Uncivilized

Solentia: 3.5/11
Jelbania: 3.5/11
Zardugal: 3.5/11
Beiteynu: 2.5/11
Barmenia: 0/11

Average rating: 5.5/11

Comment: As the only government on the continent that formally adheres to a Pantheistic world view, it should come as no surprise that Pontesi comes out at the absolute top in this regard. Still, it has received major criticism from the Observatory, primarily concerning its failure to regulate fishing properly, and for not explicitly outlawing things such as zoos (or circuses) that violate the right of the animal to live in her natural environment, and often results in the murder of animals for no good reason other than due lack of profits. The Observatory thus does not think that the Pontesian government lives up to its promise of guaranteeing the dignity of all living beings.

At the bottom of the list, we find Barmenia on the astounding number of (0). This must be seen as something incredibly shameful, considering Barmenia's great historical legacy and record of animal rights during Felinism. Interestingly, adherence to uncivilised policies seems to have no connection to whenever the countries regard themselves as liberal democracies or not, given how Pontesi and Selucia, and Jelbania and Solentia - respectively - are found in the same categories.

This survey has not taken other environmental policies into account, which may be seen as a drawback due the two being obviously interconnected (the right of living beings to live with their kin and natural environment). The Observatory decided to keep this first survey relatively simple.
