Arch-Patriarch returns home following visit to Istalia

Arch-Patriarch Thomas Justus has returned to Ville de Saints following a short pastoral visit to Istalia. Notably the visit was the first of the new century for the Arch-Patriarch and the first time that he had returned to Majatra since the Church hierarchy was exiled from the Selucian capital at the end of last year. Over the course of five days, the Arch-Patriarch visited a number of major cities throughout the country and celebrated three large public masses. Istalia is home to the largest Aurorian population in the world with over 90 million citizens identifying with the Church.

The visit comes amid a period of upheaval after the Church confirmed that the Arch-Patriarch would relocate to Ville de Saints, the independent region between Kanjor and Rildanor, in exchange for assurances that Hosians in Selucia would be granted a degree of religious freedom. The decision has been criticised and some have suggested that he should have been more steadfast in the face of pressure from the Selucian government. In public appearances he has endeavoured to avoid the subject but during his time in Istalia, he did offer a few remarks that appeared to be directed at the affair.

In particular many of Thomas Justus' recent public speeches have emphasised the importance of forgiveness in response to being wronged, he told a crowd in Romula, "Let us all consider whether we have a forgiving character. In the past I have heard friends say that this or that action is 'unforgivable' and for me these words cause alarm. Let us consider the parable of the unforgiving servant and remember that the Lord has forgiven us sinners and that we must extend this forgiveness to our fellow man. In effect what we are doing is turning away from God when we abandon forgiveness."

Arch-Patriarch shares symbolic embrace with the Patriarch of Hobrazia

Following the election of a new anti-communist government in Hobrazia, Arch-Patriarch Thomas Justus has begun a short three-day visit to the country. In the immediate aftermath of his arrival in the former Hobrazian capital of Astoria, the Arch-Patriarch met with Patriarch of Hobrazia Iakob VII for a symbolic meeting to demonstrate the two men's commitment to dialogue between the Patriarchal churches.

In addition to being the Archbishop of Astoria, the Patriarch of Hobrazia is the spiritual leader of the Hobrazian Orthodox Church and a major figure within the Apostolic Church of the East. The previous Hobrazian government, in line with a strict interpretation of socialist ideology, restricted the activities of the Hobrazian Church. Under the new leadership of the National Party though, the Church has experienced a strengthening of its position and Patriarch Iakob was present to bless the newly elected leader Goga Chavchavadze at his inauguration earlier this year.

During his meeting with the Hobrazian Patriarch, Arch-Patriarch Thomas Justus emphasised how situations of persecution demonstrate the need for unity and solidarity within the Hosian community, saying "From the previous Hobrazian government to the regime in neighbouring Malivia to the military administration in Selucia, dogmatic totalitarian governments do not care what denomination a Hosian is, they will attack Aurorian or Orthodox alike. In these situations we are reminded how great the ties that bind us together are compared to our differences."

In recent centuries the leadership of the Apostolic Church and the Aurorian Church have engaged in a gradual thawing of relations- despite the persistence of significant theological differences- in recognition of the changing position of the faith throughout the world. In spite of this the present visit by the Arch-Patriarch is the first of its kind for a significant period of time and the spirit of goodwill between the two leaders is unprecedented. As a sign of their firm commitment to ecumenical dialogue, the two men shared a symbolic embrace before retreating from the cameras to share a short prayer together.

Tomorrow the Arch-Patriarch will continue his visit by travelling to the Hobrazian capital of Muzal K’alak’i, where he will be received by the Hobrazian government before leading a public mass for the relatively small Aurorian population of the city. Throughout the remainder of his trip it is expected he will emphasise the need for reconciliation between individuals and groups, as well as the importance of peaceful coexistence between religious communities: both important themes of his archpatriarchate so far.

Arch-Patriarch meets controversial Likatonian charismic leader during visit

On the third day of his visit to Likatonia, Arch-Patriarch Thomas Justus has raised eyebrows for his meeting with Mark Antonia, the leader of the polarising Reformed Hosian Church. After arriving in the capital this morning, the Arch-Patriarch visited Likatonia's largest Aurorian cathedral where he led a relatively small mass ceremony. Later in the day he travelled to meet with Antonia, who is based in Clovisport.

In the past the Reformed Church has been highly controversial- even among Hosians- for their reported involvement in aggressive evangelism in foreign countries. In recent years they have attempted to dispel this reputation with relative success and have become one of the largest single churches within Likatonia. Despite the significant theological and practical divisions between the two leaders, the Arch-Patriarch explained (through an interpreter) that he hoped to "learn more about the Holy Spirit through experiencing the worship of the Reformed Hosian Church".

Historically the Aurorian Church has been the largest single denomination within Likatonia, which is home to a variety of different Hosian traditions. Over the past few centuries though the "charismic movement" has experienced rapid growth, in line with similar trends elsewhere in northern Seleya and the rest of the world. Although among the most prominent examples of a charismic church, the Reformed Church is only one of many such churches within the country.

Traditionalist and conservative Aurorian bishops have been reluctant to engage with these new movements, which place particular emphasis on direct experience of God. In the recent past some have even openly condemned the trend with particular criticism centred on the practice of "speaking in tongues", which some hardline Aurorians even believe to be satanilic. In spite of these concerns the Arch-Patriarch was keen to show respect to the charismic movement, noting that "we may not recognise this form of worship as familiar but the Holy Spirit finds expression in a host of unique methods".

Arch-Patriarch condemns vandalism of religious buildings in Selucia

Arch-Patriarch Thomas Justus has spoken out against the vandalism of religious buildings during the so-called "Festival of Reason" held in the Selucian city of Victoria. In a short prepared statement to a handful of journalists in Ville de Saints, the Arch-Patriarch condemned the "violence and disorder practised by a tiny minority of those in attendance."

The festival was devised by the government-sponsored "Church of Reason", an anti-theist church that venerates science and humanity. Although the event reportedly began peacefully, reports suggest that violence began with burning of holy books and desecration of statues before progressing to the looting and pillaging of churches and temples in the city centre. Particular attention has been paid to the response of the local and national government, who failed to intervene to prevent the open violence.

In his statement the Arch-Patriarch made clear that his sympathy extended to the Selucian pagan population who were the victims of the protest activity. Framing the violence as a conflict between freedom of religion and state tyranny, he repeated his oft-quoted line that persecution unifies the faithful because "the totalitarian does not discriminate by denomination." In an uncharacteristically confrontational tone for the reserved Arch-Patriarch, he condemned the Selucian government for their "consistent assault on faith and religion" as well as emphasising the "violent ends that arise when a society attacks freedom of belief in such an open manner."

Over the past few years the Arch-Patriarch has made fewer international visits (including to Selucia). In the past he had taken to spending several months in the country over the summer but the return to power of the anti-Hosian Selucian Traditional Movement has prevented this, with the Arch-Patriarch keen not to threaten the safety of ordinary Hosians with his presence. Despite a more limited international programme the Arch-Patriarch continues to meet the full obligations of his schedule in Ville de Saints, focusing particularly on receiving other faith leaders in the historic city.
