ITEAK

The Kirlawa Advanced Scientific Research Center (Kilani: Ionad Taighde Eolaíochta Ard Kirlawa, ITEAK) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Kirlawa. Its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Kirlawan and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim.

ITEAK plays an important role in scientific and technological policy, since it encompasses an area that takes in everything from basic research to the transfer of knowledge to the productive sector. Its research is driven by its centre located in the capital city of Éagsúila. It generates approximately 50% of all scientific production in the country. It also manages a range of important facilities; the most complete and extensive network of specialist libraries, and also has joint research units.

The mission of the ITEAK is the generation of excellent scientific knowledge and its application to solving human and animal health issues, environmental, and agricultural challenges, whilst collaborating with industries and ensuring the transfer of technology.

The ITEAK is committed to the training of highly qualified personnel. It offers biotechnology-oriented counselling to companies and public institutions as well as an important communication of its scientific activity in specialized journals and press media.

SuCoSQua

The Selucian Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (Selucian: Summum Concilium Scientificae Quaestionis, SuCoSQua) is the largest public institution dedicated to scientific research in Selucia. Its main objective is to develop and promote research regarding scientific and technological progress.

SuCoSQua plays a preeminent role in Selucian scientific and technological fields. Its main centre is located in the capital city of the Olerian Commonwealth, Victoria, although it has a center in each of the other four Selucian provinces. It generates approximately 60% of all scientific production in the country and also manages a range of important facilities; the most complete and extensive network of science and health specialist libraries, and also joint research units between the SuCoSQua and the Selucian universities.

The Government inaugurates the Kirlawa Advanced Scientific Research Center
This center will enable Kirlawa to lead the way in scientific research over time, with the latest technology and cutting-edge research fully funded by the government.

The Taoiseach Ciarán Kennedy has officially opened the so-called Kirlawa Advanced Scientific Research Center (Ionad Taighde Eolaíochta Ard Kirlawa), which will centralize the most cutting-edge technology and the latest advances in research in the nation.

After more than five years of construction, the newly opened center will serve to carry out the research of more than 5,000 scientists, carefully selected and fully funded by the Kirlawan government. According to the Head of Government, this center "will allow Kirlawa to be among the most advanced countries in science and research."

"What we inaugurate today is a very important milestone in our history. This center, which has been equipped with the latest technology and the best materials, will allow our best scientists to carry out their research fully subsidized by the government. It is an important step when it comes to being at the forefront of research at the global level, and will allow better cooperation between the rest of the nations of Terra and ourselves."


The center, located on the outskirts of the country's capital, is made up of three sets of buildings: the main one, made up of 12 blocks of buildings, contains the research laboratories, in which more than 5,000 researchers from all areas of the country will carry out their work. The second set of buildings is made up of a hospital to contain and care for those affected, in the event of a biological alert or alarm in the country due to a highly dangerous disease for the nation, in a 14-storey building. Next to it, there is a smaller building where all the researchers' offices will be located, and in a slightly more remote block the families of all those scientists from other parts of the country who have not obtained a house will be able to live. Finally, the last building is the Center's government headquarters, which will be set up as an autonomous body to avoid interference by the government and whose Rector (Reachtaire) - the director general of the entire Center - will be chosen by the scientists themselves by a qualified majority and only they will be able to remove them by the same qualified majority. The position of this Rector will be so powerful that they will only be subordinate to the Taoiseach, placing themselves at the same level as the Ministry of Health or Science, which has already led public opinion to qualify the position as "portfolio without a Ministry" .

Public opinion on this issue is almost unanimously favorable, with many voices agreeing with the government with the creation of a center that will undoubtedly place Kirlawa as a benchmark in research.

ITEAK announces promising Flu antiviral
The new drug disrupts the virus's replication chain and does not produce resistant strains

A team of researchers from the ITEAK (the Kirlawan Advanced Scientific Research Center), lead by Dr. Séan Flanagan, claim to have successfully tried, in humans, an antiviral drug against the flu, according to Natural, one of the main scientific magazines.

Scientists at the ITEAK have investigated, in animals and in humans, a compound called called XYDD-2921 which blocks an enzyme called RNA polymerase, which plays an important role in the spread of the virus genotype.

As a result, the drug triggers mutations in the virus genome. If enough mutations occur, the genome becomes ineffective and the virus can no longer multiply.

The experiment, published in the journal Natural, was conducted on ferrets, the most widely used animal model for influenza. Ferrets that received the compound 12 hours after infection did not develop any disease. Those who took it after 24 hours, when the fever had started, produced fewer viruses than control animals that received other drugs or no treatment at all. When tried in humans, it was discovered that the period of time was increased, meaning that those tested that received the compound up to 48h after infection did not develop any disease, while those who received it 36h after fever started produced fewer viruses.

"The molecule is highly effective against influenza,"
said Dr. Flanagan, one of the developers of the compound XYDD-2921.
"It was tested on a wide range of all influenza strains and, most importantly, it has a high barrier that the virus can barely overcome."



With previous antiviral agents, there has always been a problem that viruses develop drug resistance through mutation. Adeleine Toots, another lead researcher in this study, has indicated that it will be very difficult for the virus to escape from the new molecule.

"We have not identified specific resistance mutations so far,"
she said.
"The genetic barrier against viral resistance is high,"
she said, making the substance have "high clinical potential as a next-generation flu drug."

To test the level of resistance to XYDD-2921, the researchers exposed the virus to small doses of itself, gradually increasing the amount. With this, the virus normally evolves and increases its resistance to the drug. In this case, resistant strains were not developed, something that had happened with previous medications.

Following the announcement by ITEAK scientists of a promising retroviral against influenza that does not produce resistant strains, today this magazine publishes the second major breakthrough achieved: a team of scientists led by Mrs. Maher has made an important advance to achieve Parkinson's cure.

What is the Parkinson disease? It is a neurodegenerative disorder (of the nervous system) that is included among the so-called movement disorders, of unknown origin and that at the moment, has no cure. It is the second neurodegenerative disease in number of cases after Alzheimer and is characterized by the loss or degeneration of neurons in the middle part of the brain, specifically, in the so-called substantia nigra. This loss of neurons or their degeneration leads to a deficiency of dopamine, a substance that acts as a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter), in the body, which alters movement control and produces tremors at rest or rigidity, among other disorders.

It is still unknown what causes the loss, degeneration or death of neurons that produce dopamine causing an abnormality in brain activity and triggering the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but several factors have been identified that seem to influence, such as specific genetic mutations, exposure to certain toxins or presence of Lewy bodies in the brain.

Risk factors include being around age 60 and over, having a close relative who suffers from the disease, or being a man, as they are more likely to develop it.

In relation to its symptoms, the typical ones are tremors or shaking of a limb at rest, slow movement, muscular rigidity, hunched posture, balance problems, changes in speech and writing, depression, anxiety and emotional changes, sleep disorders, difficulty thinking, problems chewing and eating, etc.

Despite the fact that at the moment there is no known cure, Dr. Maher and her team have made significant progress, although for the moment it has only been tested in mice and will require an adequate and long experimentation process.

In their experiments, carried out with a combination of anticholinergic drugs, dopamine precursors and agonists, inhibitors and other components, they have been able to reduce the rate of degeneration by a percentage between 40 and 60%, and in a couple of cases, not yet significant, as further study will be required, have managed to completely stop the progression of the disease. Now, it is in those cases in which they are going to focus, to study what conditions are those that have led to that situation and if it is something that remains constant over time or after days or even years, the disease continues again your course.

Hamilton Company Donates 2,000,000 LIK to ITEAK

The Hamilton Company has donates 2 mill. LIK to ITEAK in hopes of furthering progress on a parkinson cure, and a flu antiviral. CEO John Hamilton said that he hoped the donation would quicken the progress, he was especially enthusiastic abut a parkinson cure, saying "I hope they will end this horrible horrible disease.
Interested in not responding to ridiculous accusations, namely from Jakania, and Lourania, and now Valruzia

Dr. Saoirse Maher, geneticist, has managed to be chosen for a second term as Rector of ITEAK, obtaining more than 80% of the votes of her coworkers. Mrs. Maher, who now enjoys international fame thanks to the promising research she is carrying out with her team on a possible cure for Alzheimer's, has thanked that at her almost 80-year-old, her colleagues continue to trust her to lead them , and has also taken the opportunity to announce the latest advances related to its research.

According to her words, the experimentation with the possible cure has already gone through the phase of experimentation with chimpanzees and has had a sample of 100 human volunteers, of which 24 did not experience any effect, while in the remaining 76, the disease reduced its speed of advance by approximately 30% in 51 of them and by 55% in the other 15. These results, added to the research that is being carried out separately in mice in which it has already been possible to completely stop the disease in 12 out of a sample of 20, bring ITEAK and Mrs. Saoirse's team closer to a cure that seems increasingly plausible, but that, in their own words, there is still time to have it.

"These results confirm what we already suspected: that we were on the right track. However, we must be cautious and not be carried away by optimism. There are still several years of research and disappointments, but neither my team nor I will give up on our efforts to achieve this cure that can end the problems of so many people in Terra. At the moment, we are focusing most of our efforts on the most advanced part of the research, that is, on the slowdown of the disease, but the total cure no longer seems a mere utopia "

ITEAK announces today in an official statement that it has managed to find an effective cure for Parkinson's disease. The cure, which has been achieved following the research line of Dr. Saoirse Moher, is effective in 99% of cases and has practically no side effects, according to the researchers.

The current ITEAK Rector, Molly Horan, appeared this morning to announce to the international community and the Kirlawa health authorities that the ITEAK scientific team has achieved one of its main ambitions in recent years. The team led first by Rector Saoirse Moher and subsequently by her successor Mrs. Horan has spent over 20 years investigating, with promising results study after study, an effective cure against a hitherto intractable disease. Now, the new drug developed by ITEAK does not allow to reverse the effects of the disease, but it can stop it completely in more than 80% of cases, while in the remaining 19% it slows down its progress by more than 95%, making it practically ineffective in almost all cases. In addition, this new drug has already been made available to the other main ITEAK research team, focused on the study of Alzheimer's disease, since everything seems to point out that it may be of great importance in finding a cure for this disease as well.

The drug, which works by preventing the breakdown of dopamine-producing neurons, thereby preventing the effect of the disease from accelerating, while acting as a substitute for long-term neural connections, does not have a single-dose effect and therefore, it will force patients suffering from this disease to take it continuously, but if they do, they will be completely free of the disease. The Rector has announced that its side effects may include, in less than 10% of the cases, hyperactivity during a few minutes after the drug makes its effect, as well as fatigue or headache, with only minutes of duration.

The drug patent, which as stipulated in the founding contract of ITEAK belongs to both the research center itself and the government of Kirlawa, has already been submitted and approved, and ITEAK agrees to personally negotiate with the government to make it available to all the inhabitants of Terra who need it.

The Rector of ITEAK wanted to dedicate this discovery to her predecessor, who was the leader of the research team for this drug for a large part of her life, and for this reason she has received the name of Maherizine, the name with which she has been registered in the registry of patents.

Today, without a doubt, is a historic day, and the ITEAK has taken the opportunity to announce that every day they are closer to finding a cure also for Alzheimer's.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the fact that I can be here today announcing this with great pride. It is a real pity that Mrs. Maher, Saoirse, cannot be here to see that her research has paid off. It's ironic, but the disease that has unfortunately turned off the light of one of our nation's brightest minds may no longer take any more lives. It has taken many years of research, but it is precisely this period of time that has allowed us to safely and emphatically affirm that this drug is effective in more than 99% of cases, and we can announce with the same certainty that the disease, therefore, it can currently be eradicated. Maherizine will provide us with an Alzheimer's-free society, and is currently being used by another ITEAK research team as a primary study drug to further advance the cure for Alzheimer's, which will be the next thing our research center will focus on. For now, we can only say "thank you Saoirse," and I sincerely hope that all citizens will soon know her name and accomplishments. "

This morning the ITEAK has published a study by means of which it announces that it has managed to generate tsetse flies (genus Glossina) - known to be the transmission vector of sleeping sickness or Trypanosomiasis - that are capable of manufacturing antibodies by themselves against the parasite causing the disease, the protozoa of the genus Trypanosoma, thus taking a further step towards the elaboration of a method that allows the eradication of this disease that plagues especially the tropical countries of Terra.

In a conference held in the ITEAK press room, the current Rector of the institute, the virologist Eimear Ahren, has revealed the main keys of this study, which she hopes will provide very promising results in the coming years.

"From ITEAK we are working hard in the search for cures for many diseases that currently plague different parts of Terra, but obviously, some studies are progressing faster than others. And after the Parkinson's cure, it seems that now is the turn of the disease popularly known as "sleeping sickness." Of course we still have a long way to go, but what we have achieved so far opens a clear path to the goal we want to achieve. So far, what we have achieved is creating flies whose offspring naturally present defenses in their body that attack the parasite, in this case the protozoa, and eradicate it from the system, instead of living with it. That is, we have managed to induce the formation of aggressive cells, which are transmitted in a generational way , and that they attack those protozoa of the genus Trypanosoma that cause the disease in our species. "


To understand what this discovery implies, one must better understand how the disease works. Protozoa, single-celled microscopic organisms that live in humid environments, are parasites of other living things. In the case of this disease, the protozoa responsible are those of the genus Trypanosoma, with Trypanosoma brucei being the species responsible for sleeping sickness. This disease, which depends on a vector for its transmission - the tsetse fly - occurs when one of these flies is infected with the protozoa and bites humans. The parasite, which develops its life cycle inside an individual, is transmitted to the fly's salivary glands when it sucks blood from that individual, where it reaches its final mature state and it is from there, when the fly bites the next individual, when it will spread to their bloodstream and cause disease. This disease, which invades the central nervous system - but does not invade the cells -, produces in the first instance a painful inflammation that ends in a scar. Subsequently, the parasite is transferred to the lymph and blood, where it multiplies and produces days of high fever followed by days without fever, in a cycle that repeats itself, in addition to migraines, joint pain, weight loss, severe weakness or tachycardias, in addition to invading the cardiovascular, renal and endocrine systems.

In the last phase, when the parasite invades the central nervous system, it continues to produce fever, but it is then that the most typical symptoms of the disease manifest themselves: sudden mood swings, increasingly prolonged periods of daytime sleepiness, and insomnia at night, in addition to the impossibility of making any minimal effort. Finally, the subject falls into a coma and dies, sometimes causing sudden death.

However, thanks to this advance, the transmission of the disease could be cut by preventing the vector that transmits it from doing so, destroying it instead. We will see how the study progresses and if this can be applied in any way to humans as a treatment against the disease.
