Hybrid Regime: A hybrid regime is a government that actively opposses basic freedoms like freedom of expression, religion, press and assembly either oppossing all of these rights or a few of them. Hybrid regime's often influence elections directly to benefit the ruling class or party. Democracy is present, but in a limited form and the democratic system is often rigged and corrupt. A regime where a specific non elected individual is granted extensive powers is also deemed a hybrid regime if the government below him or her is deemed partially democratic. A hybrid regime is often recognizable by a rigged electoral system, the supression of basic freedoms and either one or a handfull of individuals controlling large layers of the government.

Reason for classification: Lourenne has been a pillar of democracy and stability within Dovani for centuries. Its monarchy, a symbol of stability and tradition, has kept the peace within the nation during its entire existence. While democracy had mostly reigned supreme in Lourenne until recently instability already started to form itself when, over the course of last century, several political crisis rocked the nation. From the disbanding of parliament to a resurgence of republicanism within the democratic system things were not as they used to be. Then, two years ago, republican sympathizers organized a succesfull coup which has until today brought unprecendented instability, death and uncertainty to the Dovani nation. General Cristophe Capélot took over most state authority and consolidated his power. While some democracy is still present on a local level the national government is actively supressing political rivals and has ensured a total grip over the state appratus. These changes combined make it so that the TDI classifies Lourenne as a Hybrid Regime in the index.

Flawed Democracy: A flawed democracy is a state where basic freedoms like the freedom of expression, religion, press and assembly are guarenteed by law but (possibly) sometimes questioned by the executive power or another authority of the state. A nation can also be classified as a flawed democracy if only one party has, over the course of decades, dominated the political scene of the country and little to no opossition has formed itself. In flawed democracies generally free elections take place but are in some cases influenced by pressure from societal groups or government institutions.

Reason for classification: Over the course of its history Vascania has been an example of a strong democracy within Dovani. Being one of the few nations on the continent to stand as a pillar of freedom and transparancy in a continent mostly controlled by hybrid regimes or faltering democracies. In recent years however some uncertainty's both in politics itself as well as its societies have showed some cracks in the democracy of Vascania. Starting with the closing of several mosques in the nation, which is a clear breach of the freedom of religion and therefor also threatens the freedom of expression within the country. While freedom of expression, assembly and press are still present that of religion is being threatened by actions of Vascanian governments. Furthermore a oil spill in the nation recently has caused major protests and the sacking of the nations Prime Minister, meaning that the democratic institutions are finding themselves in a rough spot as it currently stands. Vascania, despite still holding true to fundamental freedoms, can thus no longer be considered a full democracy due to ongoing events. If the Vascanian government and people manage to weather the storm and get back to the core of Vascanian democracy it might well find itself back on top as the pillar it once was.

Full Democracy: A full democracy on the Terran Democracy Index is a state where freedom of expression, religion, press and assembly are guarenteed through either law or the constitution. A state where a full democratic system has been in place for most of its history and elections are held freely and fairly. A full democracy holds itself accountable and is a pillar of freedom and democracy within Terra. It is often represented by a multitude of parties in their respective parliament and protects the fundamental democratic rights of its citizens. It is a resilient and capable democratic power.

A hybrid regime is often recognizable by a rigged electoral system, the supression of basic freedoms and either one or a handfull of individuals controlling large layers of the government.

Dictatorial Regime: A dictatorial regime is a regime that supresses its people in every sense of the word. Freedom of religion, expression, press and assembly is practically non-existent and a large state apparatus ensures that minorities and any form of oppossition is supressed. In dicatorial regimes there is no instance of democracy present in the system, with most if not all power consolidated within the ruling party, the ruler or a group of influential individuals. A dictatorial regime disregards human rights and the basic freedoms of its citizens and rules with an iron fist.

Reason for classification: Lourenne has, in its recent history, seen large instability and insecurity. From a Republican dictatorship to a transitional period and back to its monarchist roots it has been at the center of Terra for centuries but started to lose in influence following it turbulent period. Now, decades after the dictatorship was removed, Lourenne is on a path of recovery that has been steady and swift. A multitude of reforms and decisions made by the new government have restored faith in its democratic system and its insitutions have been rebuilt. Some elements of the past keep haunting the state however, making it diffcult for the government to push through certain reforms for change. Despite these trying times Lourenne is certainly once more a democracy, ready to set foot in a new era for it and its people. TDI therefor classified the nation of Lourenne as a Flawed Democracy on the Democracy Index.

Reason for classification: Selucia has been at the forefront of isolationist diplomacy and statehood since its inception. Born as one of the oldest Terran democracies it was often at the epicenter of Democratic prominance. In our last classification it had moved to be a hybrid regime, as its executive consolidated power and the state as a whole saw widespread opression of civil liberties. Its isolationism continued and it was not a part of the regional MEA or MSO till recently, preventing most regional partners from intervening. Now, decades after that dark period in its history, Selucia has reemerged with its founding principles at the forefront. Its senate and subsequent new democratic system have layed the groundwork for reastablishing democratic institutions and firmly establish the freedom of its society. Recent elections have shown to be fair and competitive, allowing Selucia to once again count itself amongst the democratic nations of the world. Its large emphasize on isolationism, recent joining of the MEA and MSO and committment to international law further cement this new reality. Selucia is thus classified by the TDI as a "Flawed Democracy".

Reason for classification: In this democratic wave that is clearly sweeping Terra the Deltarian Federation, previously classified as a hybrid regime, is also finding its democratic roots again. Out of the ashes of the Koleno regime the new Federation created a clear system of democratic governance, putting democrativ values in front of traditional tendencies. The introduction of a semi-presidential system on the Federal level has ensured a balance of power in the executive, with the president no longer able to single handidly control the entire branch but instead subject to the Premier, cabinet and the legislative branch. Despite the new democratic laws in place and the fact that Deltaria holds free and fair elections according to international standards its FPTP system for electing the legislative branch creates the possibility for societal groups or economic incentives to influence the outcome of such a election. Furthermore the conservative government has enacted strict social laws, which do not damage the constitutional freedoms of the average citizen but do move its classification into the flawed direction. These indictators combined make it that Deltaria is classified as a "flawed democracy" on the TDI. Its executive no longer controls the nation on its own and clear checks and balances have been established but still, the Federation is prone to some uncertainty when it comes to its system.

Reason for clasification: Deltaria has had a turbulent history and that pattern has shown itself again. After years of relative democracy during the Federation period the country slipped back into authoritarianism after the Rapa Pile war devastated its economy and the military, as seems to be tradition at this point, took power. The military reastablished civilian control in the country but under a authoritarian communist government, limiting internet access, freedom of expression, freedom of religion and many other freedoms as well as removing any democratic institutions from the country. While a new government installed some years ago is slowly relaxing its grip on power Deltaria is a shadow of its former self and remains one of the more restrictive governments in Majatra, where it has stepped away from its reputation of a promising democratic power some years ago.

Reason for clasification: Yingdala has shown to be capable of democratic governance after all. Decades of major influences by the royal family and threatened democratic institutions have now dissipated as Yingdala has moved into a democratic direction. Briefly it seemed as if the power of the royal family had dissapeared completely, and while this is not the case it is clear that the family and monarch have learned from their mistakes, taking a much more hands off approach and rarely intervening in the politics of the nation. Several passed laws and succesfull free elections have now cemented the idea that Yingdala is a democratic power. The Democracy Index moves Yingdala from a Hybrid regime to a Flawed Democracy.

Reason for clasification: Telamon was last classified as a Hybrid Regime by our index, based on the post war struggles of the nation and the heavy influences of power brokers within its system. Since the last indexation Telamon has considerably improved, passing democratic laws and organizing free and fair elections for the last few decades. The nation has cemented basic freedoms in its constitution and its politicians are accountable through free press and transparant laws that hold the power brokers accountable. While Telamon still has its past haunting it it is on the way to becoming a fully fledged democracy, capable of holding itself accountable and giving its citizens a wide variety of freedoms and rights.
