Farmers and small business owners alike are bracing for the immediate impact of the Democratic Party's "Big State" campaign bill.
Many are afraid that they will lose their jobs. Jorge Gutierrez, a farmer in northwest Santiago, pictured here, expressed that he's "terrified" of losing ownership of his tomato farm.

Farmers, Small business owners brace for the impact of botched campaign strategy by the Democratic Party
Published September 12, 4452

JOHNSTON—Baltusia is currently in a flurry as Gubernatorial races and Presidential campaigns run alongside each other. The most active party running for the office of the President is that of the Democratic Party, alongside their running mate, the Baltusians for Change. As part of a campaign strategy, Democrats proposed before Congress extreme regulation bills, in the hope that it would distract the leftist parties, of which are the minority of the Senate. It had done so, but immediately backfired, achieving more yes votes in the slimmest of margins, beating out the objectors by a mere 8 votes. Now small business owners across the country are bracing for the impact.

The most vocal critics to the current bill are corporations in the south, mainly in New Egelion and Santiago—Along with a significant chunk of Attano's capital, New Valois. Several service providers have lobbied Congress to object to any such legislation if it is introduced in the future. Many have stood in solidarity with them. But, as one Congressman of the Baltusians for Change points out, all this panic may ultimately be for nothing.

"Our legislature consists of 250 seats, currently, as much as we'd like that to be larger, to allow greater representation from each of the nation's five states. With the current size of our legislature in mind, typically what passes as a 2/3rds majority, which was required for the bill the Democratic Party introduced is 167 yes votes, which Congress clearly didn't achieve. So all this worrying is ultimately for nothing, and that's partly to blame on the news networks for over-reporting this. Politics will continue as normal, but it was extremely dodgy for them to propose such nonsense."

Senator John Norton publicly criticizes the Democratic Party, exclaims "What were you thinking?" on Senate floor

Image
"Thank God the Democratic Party's Big State bill narrowly missed the majority. While they may be our supporters in both the Senate and the House, we have to ask them, What were you thinking?"

JOHNSTON—Following the narrowly missed "Big State" bill by the Democratic Party, of which is still in the voting process on the Senate floor, Senators belonging to the Baltusians for Change, the second largest party in Baltusia at the current moment wasted no time in criticizing their fellow lawmakers, calling it a "tremendous blunder" and stated that it would likely hurt their chances for securing another Presidential term.

"This has hurt relations between our two parties... And it's likely that these wounds will take some time to heal.", Remarked Senator John Norton (BfC—New Egelion) to reporters after a press conference. Many within the nation, both inside and out of the government have become strongly opposed to large government legislation, with many still remembering the dominant socialist nation that once was. "It was certainly tough being a small business owner during those days," States Frank Apicella, a 2nd generation Istalian immigrant who runs a small meat packing industry in Moorstown, in Westbrook. "Then the country changed so fast, and I was seein' opportunities I had never saw when those leftists were in power. I'm all for fairness to my fellow working man, but establishing monopolies? That ain't it, chief."

With elections just months away, time will tell as to weather the Democratic Party can pick itself up and get back on its feet from an otherwise universally panned blunder has yet to be seen.

Convention Chaos in Northchase

December 4453

Amazing scenes from the Democratic Party convention in city of Northchase in the state of Ralston. This should have been a coronation for the Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, instead the party looks ready to split in half as moderates and conservatives were unable to agree on a candidate and in sensational scenes the conservative faction voted to support the nomination for the Hosian Democratic Party.

After four years as President and four Presidential runs Martha Houghty announced back in 4452 that she would not run again. It had been widely expected that Vice-President Norbert Martin, who has led the government of Baltusia for almost 14 years, would be a shoo in as the Democratic Party Presidential nomination. However during the primary campaign several candidates emerged, including the conservative Internal Affairs minister Pjotr Rock. Mr Rock won the party primaries in Ralston, Attano and in Santiago. Thus, the final elected delegate count in Northchase gave Mr Rock a lead of about 55% against 45% for the Vice President. However, once the party super-delegates voted, led by President Houghty, it was clear that the super-delegates were going to reject the views of the party grassroots and deliver a victory to the Vice President. At this many conservative delegates left the convention floor and in a separate building voted to endorse the candidacy of the Hosian Democrats.

Internal Affairs Minister Pjotr Rock celebrates his winning the lead candidate position for the House of Representatives

Conflict between moderates and conservatives within the party has been simmering for the last decade and it appears that conservatives have finally gained the upper hand at the grassroots level, particularly in the states of Ralston, Attano and Santiago and within the House of Representatives caucus. Interestly a more nationalist faction has emerged, with retired Air Force pilot Martha McDonald emerging as a key figure, securing 15% of delegates in total and 25% in the state of Ralston. It is likely that she will be included in any future Democratic Party led government. Several key figures within the moderate faction have already announced their retirement from front line politics at the national level, with Edmund Davis the Agriculture minister entering a Gubernatorial run in Ralston. Additionally, other moderates have threatened to leave the Democratic Party and it is possible that the party will suffer in the forthcoming legislative elections as some supporters may switch their votes to the Democratic Party’s governing partners.

In a separate vote at the convention Pjotr Rock easily beat Science and Technology minister Sofia Jones to replace Norbert Martin as the Vice-Presidential nomination and as such will run as the lead Democratic candidate in the House of Representatives. It has already been noted that the Democratic Party has run a significantly more populist campaign than in 4450 which has worried key allies of the party in the business sector. After a convention like this one we wonder how the electorate will react to a Democratic Party that appears to be rapidly moving towards the authoritarian right and away from its pragmatic centre-right positions of the last decade.

Oliver Farnsworth secures leadership for Baltusians for Change, addresses "Significant divisions" within party factions

Image
Farnsworth faces the audience during his victory speech.

Johnston, D.D.
Published September 15, 4454

The results are in—Oliver Farnsworth has won the nomination for Chairperson of the Baltusians for Change, ousting founding leader Jeremy Cox. Congratulating Mr. Cox on his achievements in building relationships with the other parties and solidifying a coalition committed to reforming Baltusia from a socialist state to a Federal Republic, he also made public the deep divisions fracturing the party.

As the years have passed, it's become clear to practically anybody now that our party is becoming increasingly divided. We have an emboldened conservative faction that has grown larger in support, and our faction currently tries to advocate for two things at once—Social liberalism and Social Democracy. Same thing goes for the conservatives, who, as far as I know, are grappling to advocate for typically red-blooded Baltusian conservatism along with libertarianism. It seems that our broad coalition was exactly that—Broad. Too broad to cover all the bases.

Farnsworth stated that he, along with many other liberals expressed that if these fractures continued, it'd likely result in a split off of the party altogether. "It's getting pretty tough," remarked a spokesperson for the party. "In the next five years, one of two things is going to happen—The liberals split off and reorganize the party, or it's the conservatives. Really it could go either way."

The party also is currently reeling from its electoral losses, being knocked down from its perch as the second largest party in Baltusia, and several lawmakers both in the House and Senate have voiced their displeasure at being excluded from President White's cabinet proposal, despite being members of the coalition government.

When reached for comment, a spokesman for the Hosian Democratic Party stated "That's just the nature of politics. Can't go with the flow? You end up face-forward in the surf."

Liberal Party Refuses to join the two party system bandwagon

This afternoon in a press conference the leader and founding member of the Liberal party, Richard Coolidge, stated the following message directed at advocates of the two party system - "while the idea of a two party system would be beneficial to the political climate of Baltusia it should be noted that such a system would destroy any such diversity that lies in both the political right and left. We see no point in joining this cause lest our identity be sacrificed in the process." The liberals recently suffered a major setback at the polls and are clamouring for the assertion of an individualist third way separate from Conservatives on the right and Socialists on the left.

Governor Miscell of Westbrook: "The state Election System failed and it must be changed"

The recently elected Governor of Westbrook quickly started to work and stated that the Election system for governors needs to be a priority of this government.

Image
The new Governor of Westbrook at her first press conference in such position

SCHWARZWALD, WESTBROOK - The Governor of Westbrook, Suzanne Miscell, quickly started her work in the capital. She appointed her chief of Staff, Howard Heggel, former councilman of the city, and held a press conference right as she took her oath. In her speech she thanked her voters again, and specified her plans for this term. Her plan will prioritize public healthcare and economic development. When questioned about the latest devolution bills she stated that she "believes our legislators will make the right decisions to move Baltusia forward", a very vague answer coming from her, as we saw her being very mouthy during the last months of the campaign.
The conversation with the press moved along, as she decided to answer almost every newspaper and media's question.

Her most controversial answer came when she was asked about the new constitution and our brand new institutions, where she harshly criticized in "some aspects". Mainly on the one that actually put her in charge of the western state, the State Governor Election System: "This system is new, and it's being tried out. Sadly I do not agree nor understand some aspects of it. The State Governor Election System must be reformed immediately and it needs to be a priority of this government. We need a directly elected Governor, that is elected by the constituents of each State, and not a proportional system based on the national results. Our system does not represent the states and it must be changed".

It is clear Miscell is referring to the controversial results of Governor of New Egelion, where Dean Marshall of the BfC resulted elected, yet the Democratic Party got the largest quantity of votes by far, surpassing the BfC by 3 million votes.

"It is not clear how our new system works and the New Government must revise this as soon as possible" - stated the Governor.

Socialist Party gets ready for the Two-Party System Reform

Image
The Chairman of the SPB, Lucas Greenwich announcing the party's intention to move forward with this reform

JOHNSTON D.D. - The Socialist Party of Baltusia is ready to leave its name and tradition to join the United Democratic Party, following the largely accepted Two-Party System reform that will soon take effect in our nation. A first National Convention was organized to attract sympathizers and to decide on a name for this new party. The attendance wasn't huge, yet this was "expected" by the SPB national board: "This wasn't planned to be a big event to fill every seat and complete our membership goal in one afternoon, we want that Baltusians hear us and understand this new system that's going to be implemented very soon".

The SPB announced that in this eventual merger, the party's core values and socialist ideologies will not change in any way, as they will "only change the name, very subtly, but this is nothing more than an electoral strategy", the goal for this reform is to further represent distant ideologies, and to promote the cooperation between the parties of Baltusia.

The SPB would eventually be just a faction of the big United Democratic Party, and it will keep its initials too, as the faction will be officially called "Socialist Progressive Baltusia" (SPB, and the new graphics of the -eventually former- party were revealed.

Baltusians for Change, Socialist Party of Baltusia merge to form "United Democratic Party", others expected to join

Triumph today as the combination of over two years of negotiations between party chairpersons of the Baltusians for Change along with the Socialist Party of Baltusia have culminated in the formation of the United Democratic Party. The party's first convention unveiled a name, slogan, and the former Baltusians for Change assumed the role of the leading faction (as of this publication), which will be the social liberals.

Speaking to crowds outside their party headquarters, which will soon be renovated over the coming months to house the former SPB, along with any other parties who wish to join, Oliver Farnsworth, the Chairperson for the newly formed Social Liberal faction stated that the new party was a tremendous victory for more "Cohesive politics".

What has been achieved here today is a tremendous victory for more cohesive politics in our country. Eight different parties simply cannot exist in a single nation and many of our fellow Baltusians are extremely confused as to who to vote for. Hopefully, if things go the course, that will be no longer. Many of us on the left share the same vision, hence why this merger was inevitable. We just hope that others on our spectrum stand in solidarity with us and join us, for a more progressive and better future for our country.

As of this publication, the right-wing parties, along with the Liberal Party, who wish to form a loose organization of independent politicians are holding conventions of their own, but no conclusion has been reached.

Valruzian-Baltusian housing and homeowners insurance firm Bekowsky and Schuster files for bankruptcy, citing ongoing economic recession in Valruzia

Image
Since the bankruptcy of Bekowsky and Schuster, many homes which were under the firm, like this suburb near San Fierro, in New Egelion are currently in limbo.

Moorstown, Westbrook
Published September 9th, 4459

Speaking from their headquarters, situated in Moorstown, a small city in central Westbrook that is close to the Valruzian border, the CEO of Bekowsky and Schuster, Arkady Bekowsky announced that the company would begin bankruptcy filings this week, citing the ongoing economic recession in Valruzia. Servicing a number of gated communities and high value homes across the country, it was ranked one of the top 5 housing firms on the market.

It is incredibly difficult to say this, but we are formally filing for bankruptcy, beginning this week. It seems the economic recession in my own country of Valruzia has bled into our company in Baltusia. For the many people we serviced and represented across the nation, I say this: Please consult with other homeowners insurance companies as soon as possible. I also invite other companies, once the bankruptcy proceedings finish, to buy the remainder of our assets.

According to statistics released by the company itself, B & S serviced an estimated 500,000 homeowners in nearly every state of Baltusia, even servicing high-end homes. Many of these aforementioned homeowners are now in limbo, with many fearing that they will not be able to afford an alternative, now that they have lost their insurance benefits. This especially hits hard for low-income earners in major cities, who claim the basic packages offered by B & S were the only thing protecting them.

"I think it's a load of bulls--t, honestly," States apartment renter Jack Thibault, who lives in New Valois. "My benefits are gone and right now, it's just a waiting game. Pipe bursts? Can't be guaranteed that it'll be fixed! I'm f---ed!"

Continued unpredictability of recession-gripped Valruzian companies sends waves of anxiety throughout the New Valois Stock Exchange

Image
Stockbrokers race across the floor of the New Valois Stock Exchange (NVSE) amidst a massive wave of unpredictability for Valruzian companies in the throes of their recession.

New Valois, Attano
Published September 9th, 4459

With Valruzia in the throes of a deep recession, the toll hasn't just affected the housing market, it's also affected the stock market. Many native Valruzian companies actively trading have faced a wave of unpredictability in their share value, which has sent waves of anxiety amongst fellow brokers on the NVSE's floor.

Amidst the usual clamoring and yelling typical of an early weekday morning, the air today was especially tense. Veteran broker Richard Bonatti spoke to the Baltusian Economist, stating "Many people are just shying away, pulling their money out of Valruzian shares. Big names too, like LOT Airlines and Bönning. I've seen dozens of guys sell them off like hotcakes, not even caring what they get out of it. Don't want to risk getting screwed."

Whilst the pulling away of investment from Baltusian brokers has seemingly helped them at the present moment, it however has plunged these companies into a further economic downturn, making many wonder if they will have the strength to survive.

Many have already begun advocating for a response from the federal government, but such a reaction has yet to be seen.
