Churches accuse government of "anti-Hosian agenda"

The leadership of the Bishopal Church and the Aurorian Patriarchal Church have issued a strongly-word statement condemning the government's Protection of Children Act which would ban Hosian (OOC: Christian) schools from enrolling children from non-Hosian backgrounds and also ban Hosians from adopting children from outside the Hosian community.

This legislation comes in the wake of widespread fears within the ruling Rajutti National Party that Hosians are on a mission to undermine Geraja (OOC: Hinduism) and convert as many Gerjans to Hosianism as possible.

The joint statement from the bishops of the two churches accuses the government of "a determined anti-Hosian agenda to discriminate against Hosians and undermine Hosian religious life in this country".

President Patanjali Ganapuli dismissed the claims, saying "Malivia is a tolerant and inclusive country" but that "as a country, we are entitled to protect our cultural and religious identity against the really radical, zealous proselytisers who are trying to undermine it".

Petrol and electricity prices stabilise as Vascanian oil flows in

Thanks to Vascania's intervention the price of electricity and petrol has come down dramatically, stabilising at around the level they were before the tariff against Kafuri oil was imposed.

However, questions are being asked in the Lok Sabya about whether Malivia's commitment to achieving energy independence by 4790 can be achieved. Maya Chadda, the chairwoman of the parliamentary Energy Select Committee, commented:

Malivia has reserves of oil and gas, but is not extracting anything like enough to remove the country's dependence on imported energy. We could be doing this in theory, but the investment, the skilled workers and the technology simply aren't there. With the way things are going, Malivia will remain an energy importer for a long time to come - going way beyond 4790. The Vascanians are helping us for now, but they do not seem to have any serious intention of helping us to develop our own resources. Their main priority is to charge us for buying their oil.

Electricity generator in Hitam, run on cow manure

Satyender Ahluwalia, the Minister for Cows, places his hopes on cow manure to meet Malivia's energy needs:

The science of converting cow manure in to fuel is moving ahead at lightning speed, and Malivia is a world leader in this field. We need the oil from Vascania now, but we will not need it forever. Within 30 years time, a third of the energy supply across Terra will be generated here in Malivia, using cow manure. Holy Mother Cow has the answers to our problems. All we need to do is learn from her.

Chadda, though, is less convinced. "I love Satvender, we all do," she said, "but his analysis of the energy industry is not backed up by hard facts, and I have no doubt others in the government are grasping this, even if he is not".

Malivia proclaims Carlu as Keymon "King-in-exile"

Image
Carlu's new palace in Kajpur

To international astonishment, Carlu of Keymon, who waged a failed civil war against his sister Queen Eva, has dramatically appeared on national television, flanked by Malivia's President Patanjali Ganapuli and Foreign Minister Vrikodara Mahalanabis, to announce he still maintains his claim on the Keymon throne. He thanked the Malivian government for their "warm support" and expressed his "solemn commitment" to "guiding Keymon towards its destiny as part of Greater Malivia".

Speaking after him President Ganapuli paid tribute to Carlu as "a very fine young man who we are proud to recognise as the rightful King of Keymon".

After the President had spoken, the television camera focused on a woman who none of the assembled journalists recognised. She was introduced by the Foreign Minister as Laurenzia Mannazzu, the former nanny of both Carlu and Eva, who had cared for them as children and remained close to them since. Laurenzia swore on a copy of the Book of Annunciation (OOC: the Christian New Testament) that she had something important to say, and that she swore what she was about to say was true. She then went on to claim Eva was not the daughter of King Gaudino, but of a liaison between Queen Amelie and her pilates instructor. She went on to claim Eva "has very loose morals and has slept with every young man in the palace", accused her of "making King Gaudino's last years a living nightmare by endlessly bullying him and tormenting him in to changing the succession in her favour" and denounced her as "that illegitimate whore who pretends to sit on the throne of Keymon".

The Malivian government has installed Carlu in the lavish setting of Kajpur Palace, a huge historical mansion constructed by the East Artanian Company in the Rajutti (OOC: Indian) style. He is running his government-in-exile from there, with the help of a team of supporters, mainly fellow exiles from Keymon.

Former Foreign Minister Arpit Bajpai, who resigned in protest at the government's controversial claim on "Greater Malivia", has expressed his "respectful disagreement" with the decision to recognise Carlu, warning "this could have potentially serious and unpredictable consequences for us internationally".

Meanwhile, Harpreet Vemulakonda, the renowned astrologer who drew Carlu's astrological chart when he was born, has claimed he knew all along that everything that has happened with Carlu would happen. He also predicted Carlu would come to rule Keymon and Malivia will win its upcoming international cricket match against Medina.

Manas mania sweeps Malivia

Prince Madhu's visit to Malivia has proven wildly successful, winning the hearts of Rajuttis (OOC: Indians), Esinsindus (OOC: Jamaicans/Africans) and Luthoris (OOC: English), Gerajans (OOC: Hindus) and Hosians (OOC: Christians). An opinion poll suggests 73% of Malivians are now in favour of installing Vascania's Emperor Manas as Malivia's constitutional monarch. However, another opinion poll, which involved Malivians being shown a photograph of Emperor Manas and a photograph of Prince Madhu and being asked to name which one is the Emperor, suggested 54% of Malivians think Prince Madhu is Emperor Manas.

Esinsindus protest cow dung mountain

The National Esinsindu Forum is holding protests against a humongous cow dung mountain which is growing near the Esinsindu village of Trysee in north-west Washebar. Responsibility for the mountain rests with the Ministry of Cows, which over the last few months has been manically buying up cow dung on the open market in order to "stabilise the price of this highly important commodity".

Villagers are complaining, though, that the smell from the cow dung has become unbearable and that their village is being over-run with flies. Trinika Pantofflett, the chairwoman of the National Esinsindu Forum, has called the government's policy "absolutely mad" and questioned whether the Ministry of Cows would "dump a big, horrible cow dung mountain like this outside a Rajutti village".

Satyender Ahluwalia, the Minister for Cows, says the cow dung mountain is "perfectly safe, and in fact will enrich the surrounding air" and that "we intend to release the cow dung back on the market at a slow and responsible rate once prices have stabilised".

Malivia set for "Monarchy election"

The ruling Rajutti National Party says it is fighting the election due next month on the issue of the monarchy. Amidst rising support for the installation of Vascania's Emperor Manas as a constitutional "Emperor of Greater Malivia", President Patanjali Ganapuli is asking the people for "a mandate to give Malivia the most prestigious and respected monarchy in the whole world".

Construction work begins on Putera Temple in Seredeki

Image
Plan of the proposed Puteran Temple

In another vote-winning initiative, the government has given the go-ahead for the construction of a temple to the Gerajan (OOC: Hindu) god Putera (OOC: Ram) in Seredeki, in the same site where a Hosian (OOC: Christian) church was torn down by Gerajan fanatics more than 200 years ago. Legislation authorising the government to do this has been on the statute books since 4536, although up until now, governments have been content with a temporary Puteran shrine on the site rather than taking the risk of antagonising Hosians by building a permanent temple structure. The new temple, once built, will be the largest Gerajan temple in the world and the largest religious building of any variety in the whole of Artania.

Both the Bishopal Church and the Aurorian Patriarchal Church have issued a joint statement condemning the move as "disrespectful and provocative" but urged their followers "not to protest against this in any way which breaks the law or which does not honour our Hosian values".

Critics, including the Social Justice Foundation and the National Esinsindu Forum, have questioned why, in a country with as much poverty and under-development as Malivia, the government is spending so much of its resources on building a temple.

Bishop of Seredeki to be extradited to Lodamun Commune on suspicion of cow vigilante violence

Following continued concern from the Lodamun Commune that Malivia is not doing enough to bring to justice those involved in cow vigilante violence in the Commune's territory, Internal Affairs Minister Chatur Nijasure has offered to extradite the Bishop of Seredeki, Deven Lumsden, of the Bishopal Church. "We have amassed significant evidence that the bishop is planning terrorist attacks abroad and trying to make them look as though they were committed by Gerajans, as part of his agenda to undermine the good international reputation of Geraja", Nijasure said.

The Hosian community has reacted with incredulity at the news. Lumsden has recently been outspoken in his opposition to the controversial plan to build a Putera Temple in his city, but has no history whatsoever of inciting violence or being involved with violent activities in any way.

Malivia bows out of Security Council race, switches support to Endralon

After failing to garner more than 6 votes in the race for Seat A of the Security Council, the Malivian government is switching its support to Endralon, and asking its supporters to switch their vote likewise. "We feel Endralon would be a more positive and stronger presence on the Security Council than either of the other two leading contenders, Keymon and Luthori" said President Ganapuli.

Malivian cows "the best in Terra" says Minister for Cows

Image

Satyender Ahluwalia, the Minister for Cows, had a surprise yesterday when he visited a temple in central Bhulkhandra dedicated to Dhamkana, the cow goddess, where more than 300 cows are cared for and worshipped.Whilst there, his attention was drawn to Dorvka, a finely-bred Dorvish cow given as a gift to Malivia by the Dorvish Kaiser. One of the priests commented that Dorvka's milk was "whiter and creamier" than the milk of the Malivian cows, and that he personally preferred it. He also said Dorvka's back was "more elegant and less humpy".

The Minister for Cows took umbrage at this, and commenced a long lecture about the virtues of Malivian cows, in full view of assembled journalists. He claimed Malivian cows are "the best cows in Terra, far superior to all the others", asserting Malivian cows have humps on their backs which convert sunlight in to gold, which is then suffused in to the cow's milk. "Malivian cow's milk has gold in it, giving it a faint yellowish tinge and enriching it with amazing health benefits which our scientists are still learning about today,", he said. "Milk from other cows does not have the gold and is nowhere near as good, and cannot cure the same health conditions and diseases", he added.

Government denies Esinsindu massacre after cricket match mayhem

Internal Affairs Minister Chatur Nijasure has denied reports that up to 3000 Esinsindus (OOC: Africans/Jamaicans) have been massacred, mainly in Modalin, Rakaya and Verana. The alleged killings took place following Malivia's defeat at the end of a 3 test international cricket match against Medina. Malivia entered the contest as favourites, but narrowly lost the first test, convincingly won the second, and then narrowly lost the third after having appeared to be in the lead. Some groups of Esinsindus were witnessed to have cheered for the Medinan side, which, so the reports claim, Rajutti (OOC: Indian) goondas (OOC: thugs) took as all the provocation they needed to embark on a bloody rampage. The police have been accused of taking no action to stop the attacks.

Trinika Pantofflett, the chairwoman of the National Esinsindu Forum, has demanded an independent international inquiry in to the alleged events, and says she has written particularly to the governments of Vascania and Cobura asking them for their support on this issue.

Greater Malivian Empire accuses old Rutanian Order of "imperialism", demands compensation

President Patanjali Ganapuli has unveiled an official government report about the Most Noble Order of Stag, a formerly secret society which once owned more than 10% of the shares in the East Artania Company which colonised and ruled over Malivia for many years. The report outlines how the Order used its influence to pressure the Company to exploit more and more money out of Malivia for the benefit of its shareholders, and also how the Order seconded many of its senior figures to the Company, many of whom waged brutal campaigns of suppression against the Malivian people.

Image
The Kajpur massacre

One particular example of this is General William Bennett, an Order member and an ancestor of a current leading member in the Order, Earl Anthony Bennet. He was notorious for the Kajpur Massacre, in which he ordered his troops to open fire on unarmed peaceful protesters, killing over 1000 of them.

The President has called for the Order to apologise for its role in "the exploitation and oppression of the Malivian people" and to hand over 50 billion Malivian Crowns in compensation.

The National Esinsindu Forum and the Social Justice Foundation have issued a joint statement calling for any awarded compensation to be given directly to "respected non-governmental organisations" in Malivia rather than to the Malivian government, on the grounds "the Malivian government, as it is presently constituted, cannot be trusted to distribute compensation funds in a way which is fair to all of Malivia's communities", arguing in particular that "the current government has a record of discriminating against Esinsindus, Hosians (OOC: Christians) and non-caste Rajuttis". The statement also suggested "the timing of the government's demand for compensation is suspect and looks like a distraction technique, coming just after a massacre of Esinsindus which it did nothing to prevent and refuses to acknowledge even happened".

Flag of the Five Nations flies over Presidential Palace

Image
Flag of the Five Nations

President Ganapuli has hoisted the new proposed flag for Greater Malivian Empire above the Presidential Palace, proudly telling onlookers "this is a new flag for the new Malivia". The five cows, he explained, "represent the five nations of the Greater Malivian Empire - Malivia, Darnussia-Narikaton, Hobrazia, Keymon and Selucia", and "the cows - which are white, brown and black - also represent the Empire's racial and cultural diversity and harmony".

Greater Malivia to "be achieved through peaceful and democratic means"

President Ganapuli has moved to reassure the international community Malivia has "no plans to embark upon any path of war", promising "the Greater Malivia we aspire for can only be achieved through peaceful and democratic means".

Ganapuli condemns Keymon bounty on King Carlu

President Patanjali Ganapuli has denounced Keymon's placing of a bounty on King Carlu as "an act of gross international criminality". He also announced Malivia will no longer import pineapples from Keymon until the bounty is dropped.

"Spontaneous and completely unacceptable outbreak of disorder" - Nijasure on Cricket Day Massacre
Internal Affairs Ministers faces calls to resign

Beleaguered Internal Affairs Minister Chatur Nijasure has taken his furthest step so far to acknowledge the seriousness of the horrific attacks on Esinsindus (OOC: Jamaicans) which broke out last July after Malivia lost a cricket match to Medina. He acknowledged the violence as a "spontaneous and completely unacceptable outbreak of disorder", but still failed to go as far as opposition groups are demanding. The National Esinsindu Forum has put out a statement criticising Nijasure on several points, including:

- He has failed to facilitate a credible independent inquiry, or indeed any investigation at all, in to the violence and the failure of the police to respond to it.

- He has failed to acknowledge significant evidence that to a considerable extent, the violence was planned and organised by Rajutti (OOC: Indian) goondas (OOC: thugs). Many of these individuals and groups are connected to the ruling Rajutti National Party, and are given a free rein by the authorities.

- He has failed to acknowledge the character of the violence was overwhelmingly of Esinsindus being attacked by Rajuttis. He continues to deny any racial, religious or cultural motivation behind the attacks, despite the clearest evidence that such elements were present.

- In conjunction with the Minister of Justice, Krishna Thakur, he has stymied all attempts to bring the perpetrators of the violence to justice.

The barrister for the National Esinsindu Forum, Wesley Kellpatrick, has been compiling statements from victims and eyewitnesses. He says members of the security forces are reluctant to come forward "for obvious reasons", but that some have given anonymous statements on an off-the-record basis, and they present a picture of police officers being put under pressure from their senior hierarchy to go soft on the Rajutti assailants.

One of the most notorious incidents appears to have occurred in the Esinsindu eastern quarter of Modalin, where police are alleged to have first visited every Esinsindu house, requiring any weapons be surrendered, and then walked away, abandoning the Esinsindus to the Rajutti mob. Up to 500 people are thought to have been killed in this tragedy alone.

Esinsindu frustration has been rising since the Cricket Day Massacre, and ominiously, a militia group styling itself the Esinsindu Self-Defence League has emerged.

Former Foreign Minister Arpit Bajpai, considered the leading figure on the moderate wing of the party, has called for Nijasure's resignation, as has the the Deputy Chairwoman of the Internal Affairs Select Committee, Kareena Gharapure.

President Ganapuli is coming under pressure both domestically and internationally to drop his famously hardline Internal Affairs Minister. Sources close to him say he would like to do so, but fears Nijasure would be a greater threat to his position on the backbenches than in the Cabinet.

Cabinet reshuffle

Kasturbai Padagavakar, a descendant of former Prime Minister Amish Padagavakar, has been promoted from Science and Technology to Infrastructure and Transport, after the latter portfolio was vacated by the now disbanded National People's Party. Meanwhile, Sanjay Mahadeo, a descendant of the Rajutti Liberation Front leader Bhima Mahadeo, famous for attacking Luthoris and Esinsindus alike in the days of the East Artania Company, moves to Science and Technology. Madadeo, despite the divisive reputation of his famous forebear, is a protege of Arpit Bajpai and a standard-bearer for the more moderate and progressive wing of the party.
