Constitutional Federative Assembly Elects First Mondesian Monarch, January 4750
Image

Image
The newly appointed Yang di-Berkhidmat will be crowned on the 1st November 4750.

The first ethnically Mondesian monarch has been elected to his position by a 1200-strong Constitutional Federative Assembly. Yang di-Berkhidmat Perwira bin Tuhan ("King" Periwa Tuhan, literally He Who Serves. Tuhan, "God" is taken up as the Monarch's patronymic name following in accession to the throne) has been appointed to lead Dikurniakan following several centuries worth of uncoordinated federal rule amongst Dikurniakan's 5 states. King Periwa Tuhan also claims the title Yang di-Menguruskan Bandar (literally: He who manages the city) of Periwa Tan, Dikurniakan's Capital City, which was overwhelmingly voted as the new name for the capital in respect to the new Yang di-Berkhidmat's leadership in reuniting the nation

His Majesty's appointment comes following drawn out isolationism and intermitent conflict between the Mondesian states following the collapse of the Temanian Emprie and the securing of Mondesian independence. During the formation of the Socialist Republic of Temania, many forcibly moved Mondesians returned back to their homelands in the West and established their own nation: The Kingdom of Mondesia. Due to internal conflict, the Kingdom broke down and the area has been characterised by tribalism and intermittent conflict between the Mondesian people since.

Alongside confirmation of His Majesty's accession, the Constitutional Federative Assembly agreed upon the formation of a bicameral parliament; the Perhimpunan Kebangsaan (National Assembly) will act as the lower chamber (with 500 seats) and the Dewan Tiga Belas (Council of the Thirteen) will act as the upper chamber (with 26 seats - two for each state). This parliament, will be rather restricted, however, in the powers it has. Despite being the only body who can approve new taxes, as well as with constitional matters, and laws pertaining to civil liberties, most regulative powers have been handed down to local governments, whilst the King is solely responsible for foreign policy, though he must get a majority in the Council of Thirteen to ratify treaties.

The coronation for King Perwira bin Tuhan will be held in November 4751. Invites are expected to be handed around shortly, with the hope that the support of the international community will provide this new government and its King with validity it needs to set up ruling Dikurniakan.

New Prime Minister of Dikurniakan, Pascal Bintang

The Conservative Alliance has taken a majority in Dikurniakan's elections for its National Assembly. The alliance, which predominantly gains support from the more affluent South-West of the country as well as in the far north at the shores of Lake Temania, is made up of mainly establishment parties. Meanwhile the Federalist Alliance, who gain support primarily from lower income areas of the nation will form the Official Opposition. The more radical far-left Mondesian Front also performed reasonably well, taking 51 seats most of which can be found in Masijima.

Overall, however, the results of the election indicates a desire for stability, and that through the expected moderate leadership of new Prime Minister, Pascal Bintang, most analysts expect the nation to be able to drive towards greater socioeconomic development and establishment of a network of international allies.

Following victory, Bintang released a statement saying that he was "looking forward to working with His Royal Highness for the betterment of Dikurniakan." Bintang inherits control of the country's finances, with the Constitutional Federative Assembly placing the budget in the hands of the National Assembly. In this first administration in a new Dikurniakan, the economic policies the Conservative Alliance follow will be crucial in determining the path the country will follow going forwards.

The Council of the Thirteen will also be assembled soon. It is appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister.

King Perwira condemns Violence in Vascania, December 4750
Image

The Yang di-Berkhidmat has condemned the rising violence in the Vascanian Empire. Addressing his advisers, it has been reported that His Majesty raised the issue of the increasing levels of tension between the Vascanian government and the Bhapori people. During the weekly foreign policy meeting, His Majesty asked what Dikurniakan could do to help the situation. One idea posited was to open the nation up to Vascanian citizens who wished to claim political asylum. Other matters which were discussed during the meeting included the World Congress' plan for agricultural subsidies and the recent confusion of events in Bianjie.

Following the meeting of the King's advisers, a spokesperson for the Yang di-Berkhidmat gave a statement to the press in which the Dikurniakan government unequivocably condemned both the terrorist attacks and the increase in police brutality which have occurred in Vascania. The violence, the spokesperson suggested, helped to "cement the stereotype of Third World nations being backwards," and would further present the eastern hemisphere as a "violent, dangerous place." The statement was very careful not to get involved within the internal politics of the Empire and did not give any clues to whether His Majesty lands on the side of the reelected right-wing government or the autonomy-demanding Bhapori protesters.

National Flag Act Passes Through National Assembly, January 4751
Image

Image

Dikurniakan has established a new national flag. The historic vote, which passed the National Assembly 456-22 means that the flag will from henceforth be adopted as the national flag of Dikurniakan. The deeply religious Ahmadic population in the country believe that Ekim delivered them from both Nelayan and colonial influence, and have adopted the crescent in the sun symbol to demonstrate his omnipresence over the nation.

The Prime Minister, Pascal Bintang, who is himself a practicing Sahabist, voted in favour of the motion before the legislation was signed into law by the King (who holds a veto on all issues bar financial/economic ones). The overwhelming support for the flag demonstrates the fact that the nation has been able to rally under this new form of government, and has been able to put aside the regional bickerings of the last century.

The flag will act as a symbol that Dikurniakan is finally seeking to look past colonial and Nelayan influence and establish its own identity. The nod to its religious makeup, as well as the geographical symbolism of the green rainforest which makes up much of Dikurniakan demonstrates a nation ready to make its own way in the world and at last free itself of the shackles of colonialism. This new look Dikurniakan is on its way to establishing itself as a nation independent of its past.

Education Reform Passed, March 4751
Image

Image
The Yang di-Berkhidmat signing the Universal Education Reform Act of 4751 into law

The National Assembly has today passed legislation to provide fully subsidised education for every child in Dikurniakan up to the age of 16. The private system, which will have its prices controlled by the government, is hoped to give a more comprehensive form of education to the children of Dikurniakan who are currently often failed by the poorly funded educational facilities of local governments. Meanwhile the King confirmed he had agreed with two unnamed private contractors to build two brand new universities, one of which to be built in Pelabuhanama (the capital of the Sudut state), and the other in Teluk Syurga (capital of Masijima state).

Currently, education is funded by local administrations still trying to get on their feet economically following the reunification of Dikurniakan. This means that several of the more cash-strapped states, in particular in the east of country, have been unable to adequately fund their education services. Whilst this issue was discussed at the Constitutional Federative Assembly at the beginning of 4750 no agreement could be made at the time between delegates regarding the funding of education, though the King said that he would make sure that education was any government's "first priority".

Education Minister, Awda binti Sharaf stated that the new education system would mean that every child would have the mathematic, scientific and literary skills to be part of a modern-day workforce. In a interview she said that it was her ambition for one of Terra's next generation of world leading scientists to be born in Dikurniakan. Awda Sharaf also confirmed that His Majesty had also been in discussions with government about starting a Royal Scholarship to reward university places to lower-income students in the STEM subjects.

Such a scheme would help reinforce the view analysts are touting that Introducing this is an attempt by the government to bring the eastern states back into line with the western ones. Whilst the affluent provinces of Permat Dimahkota and Kaya Kilauan have strong education systems, it is the eastern states of Amarak and Sudut which have lower quality of life and poorer educational services. Yet whilst these reforms are "encouraging," according to Federalist Alliance leader, Malim bin Indera, they do not go far enough in order to address the "huge disparity between the quality of lives of the metropolitan population and the rural east of the country," When debating the issue in the National Assembly, Malim Indera argued that the only way the government will achieve equality of opportunity for its pupils was through a publicly run education system:

I promised on the first day of this Assembly that I would provide constructive criticism of the government, and I can honestly say that the legislation in front of us today is a significant step forward from what the current situation is. However, if they really wish to end the inequality between higher and lower income earners once and for all, they must go one step further than subsidisation and establish a nationally run education system.

The Mondusian Front were significantly more upfront about their rejection of the legislation, calling it "a ploy" in order to dupe voters into thinking that the government were serious about Mondesian issues.

The government rejected the both the opposition leader's and the Mondusian Front's positions, suggesting that a publicly run system would need an increase in taxes, and that Dikurniakan's economy needs stimulation rather than sedation. However, the government further added that it planned to expand further on these education reforms and this act would not be the last. Furthermore, it suggested that it wishes to look at the role of religion when it comes to education, and would be looking at persuading His Majesty to enact a Royal Commission to review religion's role.

Ngahontal Wins Elections in Makmurtan Upsetting Establishment Parties, April 4756
Image

The neoliberal Ngahontal party has surprised the establishment in Makmurtan as they have stormed to a convincing plurality of the seats in the most recent elections. It now seems apparent that, with the help of centre-right party, Konsolidasi, that they will be able to form a government within Kamar Jalma ("People's Chamber"). Makmurtan, which is part of the Confederation of Temania alongside the Nelayan Republic, is known traditionally for its democratic socialist standpoints, and such a vote suggests a shift towards a policy agenda more in line with their Confederation partners who routinely return conservative administrations. The success of the Ngahontal party also leaves the path open for Dikurniakan to join the Confederation, as it has been the ruling Partéi Sosialis Démokratik (PSD) in Makmurtan who have thus far ruled out any such union, despite strong support for the amalgamation in the Nelayan Republic.

Ngahontal ran of a platform of pan-Temanianism, with a key part of their campaign being the push to form a Temanian Union with other nationstates in the region. Pointing to the fact that the tariffs put up between Dikurniakan and Makmurtan, in part due to the PSD's rejection of the new monarchy in Dikurniakan, made trade between the two nations unneccessarily expensive. This message seemed to hit home to an electorate who have seen the economy stagnate in recent months as many foreign investors have seen a stabilising presence in Dikurniakan and have jumped ship in order to take advantage of the new economically liberal administration there.

Following Ngahontal success, both the Yang di-Berkhidmat in Dikurniakan, and the President of Nelaya were quick to congratulate the victors. Prime Minister, Pascal Bintang, of Dikurniakan, also congratulated his soon-to-be counterpart, Wahyu (Kahadeans only have mononymic names) for his success, stating that he was confident both countries could finally "put aside ideologically differences for the betterment of the Temanian continent." It is so far unknown whether or not the Yang di-Berkhidmat is supportive of joining the Confederation of Temania, but already King Perwira bin Tuhan has announced a visit by the new Prime Minister of Makmurtan with the purposes of discussing "future relationships."

However, there has already been some backlash from the Makmurtan left. The Jalma pikeun Republikanisme group declared the move towards validating the monarchy in Dikurniakan as "disturbing," and pledged that it would make the new government "very aware" of how it views a closer relationship with the fledgling Mondesian nation. The national philosophy of Makmurtan, the idea of social virtue, which was developed after a long period of Nelayan subjugation and has resulted in a emphasis on social unity, which many do not believe is possible under a monarch. The PSD, also criticised any potential strengthening of ties with a monarchical nation, and promised to do all in their power as the new official opposition.

Full election results to the Kamar Jalma (130 seats available; 66 needed for a majority):

Government:

Nghantol: 59 seats
Konsolidasi: 9 seats

Opposition:
Partéi Sosialis Démokratik: 45 seats
Partai Kautamaan Sosial: 10 seats
Pangakuan Manmerian: 6 seats
Partai Komunis: 1 seats

How did we get here?
Part 1/4 in the series: Will Dikurniakan Join the Confederation?

By Eko Girsang, Professor of History and Politics at the University of Kutha Kawruh
July 4756

Image

Image
The Impressive Kahadean Bridge which leads into Kota Kabecikan.

The admission of the Federal Kingdom of Dikurniakan, located in the west of Temania into the Confederation of Temania has been a source of much controversy in both the Confederation and Dikurniakan. Issues of monarchism, tariffs, and economic policy has made the relationship between the two - particularly between Dikurniakan and Makmurtan - frosty and tense. However, with a moderate consensus forming on the continent, does there seem to be a move towards such a partnership happening? This series of articles will explore in depth how we got ourselves into situation, and whether a reunion of Temania, in the form of a unitary or federal nation, or even just as a confederation is possible.

Before I begin this series, however, I wish to pay testament to the fact that I can talk about this notion seriously in the most-read newspaper in the Confederation. As you will discover as you read this article the level of ethnic instability in the previous two hundred years of Temanian history could have easily spilt over into conflict and bloodshed. The fact that this is not the case, with exception only of one or two events which had limited casualties demonstrates that even in the Third World a degree of civility can be reached.

In the first of a four part series I will be looking at the history of Temania, in particular the post-Baldassare period from 4537. In order to understand the current relationship between the two nations, we need to understand how this situation began. Following the foundation of the Socialist Temanian Republic in 4537, and the fall of the Empire of Telmania, the Mondesian people were able to return to their traditional lands in the west following forced integration under the Baldassare regime. Unwilling to bow to another centralised government in the east, the Mondesians declared the short-lived Kingdom of Mondesia in 4545, which wasn't recognised by the socialist government, nor by many in Mondesia. The consequence of this was an increase in the strength of local groups who slowly eroded away at the power of both the Socialist or the Mondesian governments in the region. This led to a period of federal isolationism as it is referred to today, wherein a myriad of local conflicts and coalitions saw nobody able to take full control of the country until the consensus created today under King Perwira bin Tuhan.

Meanwhile, in the east, the Socialist government, located in the city of Kota Kabecikan (which remains the capital of Makmurtan) was struggling to revitalise the Temanian economy after the fall of the Baldessare regime, and despite the financial support of Deltaria, resulted in the collapse of government support, and the gradual increase in tensions. In the last ditch effort to prevent tensions from spilling over into conflict, the members of the different political groups concerned met at the Konferensi Harapan Terakhir ("Last Hope Conference") in 4567 where it became clear that the Kahadean population in the main continued to support the socialist government, whilst the Nelayan population as a whole preferred a more conservative administration be put in place. At the conference it was decided that the two nations would separate and the Nelayan Republic and the Kahadean Socialist Republic (KSR) were formed.

At this point it seemed unlikely that the Temanian continent would see another reunited Temania. With all three "nations" (I put nations in inverted commas as Dikurniakan cannot be really classified as a nation at this point, rather a selection of self-run provinces) going their separate ways, many analysts at the time doubted the return of Temania as a nationstate. That all changed across two key events. The first I have already alluded to, and is fresh in the minds of most Temanians - the reunification of a Mondesian state in the form of Dikurniakan through the strong leadership of Kaya Kilauan born King Perwira bin Tuhan. The second, as most Temanians will also be aware, is the formation of the Confederation following the "Sixty Days" in 4623 where a rampant escalation in tensions between Nelaya and the KSR saw the removal of the last remains of the Socialist administration when the Nelayan army stormed into Kota Kabecikan. The consequence of this was the formation of the Makmurtan Commonwealth (as we have today) and the mutual agreement of both new nations to follow a unified foreign policy directive in order to maintain Temanian unity. It was through this, the Treaty of Kota Kabecikan, that the Confederation of Temania was formed and has since mended itself to a stable political union between two sovereign nations.

Why is the history important? Well, the main reason is that the events that have played out have left a lot of grudges between each of the three nations. For example, ask a Kahadean why the Socialist Republic of Temania failed and they will say it is because of the Mondesians. Enquire further, and you will see that many believe that it was declaration of independence of the failed Kingdom of Mondesia which led to the rift which resulted in the KSR and the Nelayan Republic; it is clear that there is a strong view that the precedence of accession and consequent delegitimisation is to blame. Yet in spite of that, both the Nelayans and the Mondesians are suspicious of the left wing nature of the Kahadeans. This is in part due to the puppet-esc government installed by Deltaria after the civil war. This is not to say that the Temanian Socialist Republic was a puppet of Deltaria - this would be incorrect. However it certainly was strongly contained within the Majatran nation's sphere of influence. Given the nation's history and previous colonisation this was not taken well by many within Temania. Such suspicion is somewhat misplaced, however. Whilst the Kahadeans are more left wing than their other Nautic counterparts this is in the main cultural differences rather than "fraternising with the enemy," as it has occasionally been portrayed in Nelayan and Mondesian news outlets. Regardless, the outcome is the same, and consequently it is has to be said that the history of the perception of Makmurtan politics of Makmurtan has certainly altered the way that each of the players have interacted with each other.

The consequences of these grudges obviously have a significant effect upon whether Dikurniakan joins the Confederation or not. It will be based upon whether the nations can find common ground, something they have clearly struggled to do in the past. The best way to do this is to examine and analyse what went wrong before, and see how approaches should change this time round. Currently, it appears that the only way Dikurniakan will join the Confederation is if the history of grudges that has grown over time can be bridged, and that can only be done through understanding why those grudges exist. If all three governments are able to look at history and not ignore it but say, "actually we want more than what the previous two centuries have had in store," then we might just be able to bridge the divide.

As I round off the first installment of the series it is important to note that if we were to take an even further look back in time at the history of Temania, there would a whole host of even longer-term events, people, kingdoms, and happenings which have built up the long and complicated relationship between the Mondesian, Kahadean, and Nelayan people. Yet even if we look past these events and focus solely on the previous two hundred and fifty years we are left with a clear picture of why it hasn't worked so far. Clearly politicians are going to have to make sure these mistakes do not happen again if it is to work this time.

Temania Set For Contentious Election
The left's struggles have provided an opening to Mondesian and Neleyan conservatives

July 4799
Image

The unpopularity of the left-liberal government, headed by the Labor Coalition made up of social democrats and democratic socialists, has provided an unprecedented opening to the nation's conservatives. The government has been hit by major corruption scandals, prompting the resignation of the Education Minister, Susanti Intan. There have also been plenty of concerns raised about the personal character of Prime Minister and Labor Coalition leader Faisel Kei. Kei has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and was caught on a hot mic talking in a highly disparaging way about Hosians. Hosians make up a crucial part of the left's electoral coalition.

The National Patriotic Alliance, a national conservative party primarily targeting Neleyans and Mondesio-Neleyans, is providing stiff competition for the government in many urban environments. Having ditched some of their economically right-wing rhetoric, the group is now campaigning on a pro-tariff and anti-globalisation message to appeal to Temania's largely industrial-based working class. Party leader Kuwat Muljana hails from the major Neleyan city of Kota, having been the city's mayor just a few years ago. His personal popularity is high in the area, though some view him with distrust for his heated rows with teaching unions.

The National Unity Party, a liberal conservative party primarily targeting Mondesians, is a threat to the government in coastal areas. Adopting some limited rhetoric from environmental groups, the NUP has pitched itself as the party for 'national unity and reconciliation'. Its leader, Bathsheba Sapa, is the only Hosian or female party major leader. She has not yet passed up an opportunity to rail against separatism, particularly among the largely rural and underprivileged Kahadean minority. Stressing her unique background, her campaign has focused on mopping up the non-Ahmadi voters turned off by Kei.

If Muljana and Sapa are victorious in their respective target regions, expect a coalition between the two. Though the NPA is avowedly Ahmadi, the alternative of working with a liberal or moderate smaller party would present more serious political challenges - particularly on the rights of minorities less well-respected than the Hosians, like Tropicans or Vascanians. Indeed, the spread of the Vascanian religion 'Sundarat Dharma' has become a political issue, as has the Tropican minority viewed with some contempt by the Mondesio-Neleyan majority. The Labor Coalition is largely doomed to massive losses across the nation, but watch out to see if some of their smaller progressive allies can remain afloat in a right-tilted political environment.

Conservatives Win But Kahedean Nationalists Stun
The new century has been heralded by a stunning surge in nationalism for the Kahedean region

January 4800
Image
Image

As expected, the conservative alliance of the National Patriotic Alliance (NPA) and National Unity Party (NUP) has won a majority of seats in the 401-seat Temanian legislature. Their narrow triumph over the assembled, yet embattled, left-wing has provided a unique governing opportunity for parties explicitly centred around particular identity, as parties like the Labour coalition - who centre themselves on cross-ethnic politics - fall away. The biggest shock of the election, however, was undoubtedly the rapid advance of the Kahedea Homeland Party (KHP), who advocate independence for the nation's Kahedean minority. Kahedeans are distinguished from other Temanians by their language and religion, often following traditional shamanistic or animist beliefs over the Geraja, Hosian and Ahmadi groups that dominate the rest of the nation.

The path towards a government is clear for now, with NPA leader Kuwat Muljana set to become the nation's Prime Minister. NUP leader Bathsheba Sapa will also likely get a prestigious cabinet portfolio, even though her Hosian heritage proved a liability for her Mondesian ethnic-based party. Sapa and her party are avowedly pro-unification and the rise of the Kahedean nationalists will likely be among the first 'issues' the government will set about solving.

Preacher Arrested For 'Subversive Activity' In Kahedea
The man has also been charged with 'unlawful proselytizing'

January 4801
Image

A Kahedean preacher has been arrested for subversion and 'general illicit activity' by federal police. The man, Otoy Sesep, is accused of inciting treachery against the government via his sermons, in which he proclaims the nature of his own divinations to increasingly large crowds of people. Sesep is one of dozens of preachers and priests who have been arrested for telling their congregations to oppose the government, including calls for a general strike in the province. Sesep was characterised by police as a 'ringleader' after the arrest, with mention being made of his past ties to organised crime. Sesep's congregation are outraged, and there is much speculation locally that the government had 'bugged' his makeshift-church or sent spies into his sermons.

Kahedea is the nation's poorest and least developed state. Having voted overwhelmingly in favour of a sovereigntist party at last year's federal election, the region has suffered particular blowback from the highly unionist government in the capital. The Minister for Justice, Bathsheba Sapa, who is also the leader of the junior coalition partner the National Unity Party, has defended a number of arrests made on maverick religious figures in the region. Locals have protested the arrests as undermining free expression, but the government has shown no signs of a willingness to reconsider its policies.
