Saridan’s Minister of International and Seleyan Affairs Heila Badenhorst held a briefing about Saridanese official stance on Vorona-crisis and what can Saridan possibly do to help to solve the crisis.

We’re the neutral side in this story, but we surely want to help our international colleagues in their efforts to stop the crisis. No matter how deadly this crisis is already, we surely can’t continue the deaths of it, by forcefully interventing. We should do the most we can do to stop this. But, the only way to solve this, as we see right now, is to sit together with both sides and international observers, to at least understand the problem, and find mutual ways to stop this mess”, - stated minister on briefing.

Minister Badenhorst stated, that “Saridan is ready to become a home for a hundreds of thousands of refugees from Vorona”, as Federal Cabinet will spend additional 23 million Saridani Dollars from budget on upgrading an infrastructure in different provinces and municipalities, and make housing free and affordable for newcome refugees. Specially for this, there will be created an agency, under the Interior and Labour & Social Services ministries - Vlugtelinge en Asielsoekers Agentskap (VAA), that will work with and focus on refugees and asylum seekers in the process of their cultural and economical intergration in Saridan. "Agency will help refugees on finding the best choice of work, house, community, and make them comfortable in Saridan, as they were in Vorona; to make Saridan their new home", stated Minister of Labour and Social Services Ruben Pistorius. Approximately, 5000-20000 is expected to arrive in Saridan, as part of international aid, where Saridan willing to take part in.

On Deltaria matter, ISS Minister preffered to wait for international response on Deltaria actions in Vorona, since Saridan is not involved in both Vorona conflicts and Security Coucil sessions. "We can't make up any conclusions, while having almost no information on crisis, other than we see in news, or hear from someone. We should wait wait some official sides, and then, maybe we can state something about it", - said Minister-President Nieuwoudt on joint briefing.

On a ordinary Parliamentary sessison, Federal Cabinet presented new education reform, which included various amendments to a 5034 State Budget, such as redistribution money between ministries, thus giving additional money to Education, Culture and Arts ministry. ECA Minister Marieta Van Biljon, answering MFP's questions, said that additional money will go on building new schools and universities, while also giving them more budget, to hire and keep more qualified teachers, thus raising mininum wage for teachers.

"Saridan is lacking a high-qualified workers, students etc. We understand this problem, and we're working on it: raising minimum wage, creating more progressive, obtainable, open-minded learning programs. Raising budgets for provincial governments, should provide them with more options on supporting the students with higher education, infrastructure, scholarships; supporting teachers, and giving teachers more qualified courses, work; supporting pupils, on creating more comfortable and accessible system, which connects with the whole world", - said MP Leeto Nieuwoudt.

ECA plans to create more affordable and effective infrastructure, such as additional NMSS train networks, connecting rural areas with nearest cities, or any locality with educational institutions, in Boerestaat and Ijkpieland, as least-urbanised provinces. Government will start supporting the bilingual learning system for provincial minorities, especially Ikpi people, who will have access to bilingual lessons, to keep indigenious languages and culture, yet learning official history and language, to keep with whole country as it's citizens.

Weeks later, ECA Minister Van Biljon together with Koeistad City Commissioner Arabella Burger and Tasselstaat Stadholder Wian Du Toit held a joint briefing, where three announced a grand project: building a new university in Koeistad, as part of reform. University of Koeistad - biggest university in Saridan, will start it's construction soon, and is expected to open in 5042. UK will cooperate with other world's univeristies to deliver the best education possible for it's students. UK campuses are projected to be the home for ~20-30k of students, alongside ~1,5-2,3k of academic stuff.

Decades of conservative caretaker administration came to an end earlier this morning when the National Electoral Commission declared that the Saridan Labour Party, led by Rosalie Breytenbach has secured a landslide victory in the national election, capturing all seats in both chambers of the federal parliament. Breytenbach and the SLP swept through the provinces capitalising on what numerous Saridani citizens saw as the malaise of the nation’s previous caretaker administration. Mounting disenfranchisement and anger as it relates to the state of the national economy and the lack of coherent policy towards addressing the nation’s socioeconomic concerns, all contributed to the SLP’s victory and the complete route of the nation’s once honoured conservative establishment. Breytenbach’s victory mirror’s the victory of her predecessors who secured a similarly absolute majority within both houses of the federal parliament decades prior. Breytenbach will join a long line of female Minister-Presidents which began with one of the founding members of the SLP, Anneline Blok who became the nation’s first female Minister-President in 4912. According to political analysts, although the SLP had virtually vanished from the Saridani political landscape for more than a century, the party’s aggressive campaigning throughout the five provinces was viewed as a breath of fresh air for millions who had become tired of the inaction of previous administrations. Prominent political scientist Juandré Vorster pointed to the party’s intellectually inclined candidates during debates throughout the nation as one of the core reasons behind the party’s success. He noted that Breytenbach’s shadow cabinet, which had been filled with policy experts and career politicians of the likes, decimated their conservative counterparts in the series of debates leading up to the election. Most notably, the debates between SLP Shadow Treasurer Dr Arnoux Rautenbach and conservative Federal Treasurer Hansie Opperman and SLP Shadow Home Affairs Minister Tiaan Booysens and conservative Home Affairs Minister Johan Becker, demonstrated to the wider public that the SLP intended on returning to its technocratic roots. Breytenbach, who is a sociologist by profession, has been referred to by many on the campaign trail as a major reformer as her plans for transforming Saridan have caught considerable favour with intellectuals and the wider population. Promising to rebuild Saridan with the principles of inclusion, cooperation and integrity, Minister-President Breytenbach declared that Saridan should come to expect good, honest governance from both her government and the SLP for decades to come as she declared that the SLP was “here to stay.”

Having campaigned on restabilising and transforming the Saridani economy, Minister-President Rosalie Breytenbach has formally reinstated the Economic Advisory Committee as one of the numerous key initiatives of the government aimed at creating an environment of certainty, trust and transparency as the nation’s economic transformation journey begins. The Economic Advisory Committee was first constituted in 4914 by then Minister-President Anneline Blok with the primary purpose of assisting the government in developing sound macroeconomic policy with the hope of transforming the Saridani economy. As the economic situation in the years following the EAC’s inception improved, its relevance became the subject of much debate among the politicians and technocrats of the numerous political administrations moving through the Stigtershof. It was finally wound up following the Kerina Van Schalkwyk administration wherein the succeeding Progressive Party chose not to reinstate the committee. The new seven-member committee, which now acts as an arm of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, includes numerous economists and public policy experts, most of which had been appointed on the basis of their respective specialisations. With macroeconomic reforms set to play a major role in the coming term, many of the economists of the EAC are seasoned macroeconomists, with notable names such as former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Saridan Dr Wian Van Schalkwyk and development economist Dr Marick Van Rensburg. Minister-President Breytenbach has stated that although the government will continue with the plan it unveiled during the elections for rebuilding the economy, she noted that the EAC will in the interim work towards contributing to the aforementioned plan. Federal Treasurer Dr Arnoux Rautenbach is expected to meet with both Stadtholders of the provinces and the Provincial Finance Ministers on enhancing synergies between the federal government and provincial governments. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Communications, Dr Marick De Vries in his capacity as Deputy Chairman of the EAC, has stated that the scope of the EAC’s recommendations would be focused on the wider national economy and would not be focused on the provincial economies. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications has unveiled the names of the members of the reinstated EAC:

Code: Select all
1. Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Saridan, Dr Wian Van Schalkwyk (Chairman)
2. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Communications, Dr Marick De Vries (Deputy Chairman)
3. Professor of Economics, University of Boerestaat, Dr Marick Van Rensburg (Member)
4. Professor of Econometrics, University of Kaap, Dr Sarette Van Der Merwe (Member)
5. Former Director of the Centre for Public Policy Research, Kerina Jouberts (Member)
6. Professor of Agricultural Economics, University of Ijkpieland, Dr Zayden Young (Member)
7. Former Chairman of the IDPWG, University of Tasselstaat, Dr Merinda McKenzie (Member)

As it relates to domestic security, Saridan’s approach remains at a unique crossroads. The lack of a coherent national security strategy accompanied by competent and independent agencies aimed at executing/operationalising said strategy, paints the picture of a nation ill-prepared to face the challenges of both today and tomorrow. “In the absence of a clear strategy or plan, chaos reigns,” is how Federal Minister for Home Affairs Tiaan Booysens summed up the nation’s current security environment amidst the aforementioned lack of a national security strategy. Speaking to the Association of National Security Professionals (ANSP), Booysens stated that the government was acutely aware of the nervousness within the nation’s national security community and among the wider population. He explained that under successive administrations, the question of enhancing the nation’s national security environment had been largely devolved to the provinces, with the respective law enforcement bodies within the province taking lead on numerous issues as it related to transnational terrorism and crime. Pointing to MoUs signed between numerous provincial law enforcement bodies on enhancing their cooperation on national issues, Minister Booysens lamented that it should not have been the provincial bodies acting on their own intuition that the MoUs had been signed but it should have as a result of a strategic initiative of a national intelligence service, which the nation does not possess. Although the Federal Police remains the penultimate law enforcement body in the country, he noted that the agency was being stretched thin and that under previous administrations its mandate had been expanded to virtually act as a quasi-intelligence and national security agency for the government. Reimagining Saridan’s national security strategy, Minister Booysens said, would require broad changes to both structure and operational scope of numerous entities both on the federal and provincial levels. He noted that it will also require the creation of new agencies among others. According to the Minister, a complete transformation of the nation’s domestic security environment from law enforcement to intelligence gathering would remain at the centre of the government’s strategy as he explained: “We need to ensure that both the Federal Police and Provincial Police are given the resources they need to carry out their tasks with efficiency and effectiveness. Although these agencies have been asked to take on considerable tasks in the past, we must rebalance the scale towards ensuring crime within our nation is dealt with as we pursue a safer and more equitable nation.” Recently appointed Commissioner of the Federal Police Thys Van Vollenhoven stated that he was prepared to ensure that Federal Police begin the process of internal reassessment and reform to ensure it remains abreast with the nation’s evolving security environment. Concurrently, there are plans to create a separate border protection agency for Saridan, virtually decoupling the responsibility from the Federal Police.

Speaking to details on the government’s plans for the intelligence community, Minister Booysens lamented that since there virtually was no formal intelligence community within Saridan, that one would have to be built from scratch. To this end, the minister confirmed that Federal Minister for Justice Stiaan Schmidt, SC had already drafted the nation’s new national security law which is currently before the legislative review committee wherein submissions from key stakeholders and the public will take place. Giving the gathering a peek into some of the aspects of the bill, Minister Booysens stated that the bill is set to become “one of the most important pieces of legislation in a while”, explaining that the law provides for the creation of an intelligence agency responsible for both domestic and foreign intelligence which would be answerable to a special committee of the Federal Parliament, the creation of a defence intelligence agency responsible for coordinating the intelligence activities of the three branches of the Saridani Defence Force and the creation of an overarching “Office of National Assessments” and a “Director of National Assessments” who would virtually govern the affairs of the intelligence community and would be answerable to the Minister-President, the Federal Ministers of Home Affairs and Defence and the Federal Parliament. The bill also establishes “the National Security Council”, which would be a statutory body of the Federal Chancellory. It would be chaired by the Minister-President and would include the Federal Treasurer and Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Justice and Defence, the Chief of Defence, the Commissioner of the Federal Police and the Director of National Assessments. According to Minister Booysens, the model used mirrors that in Dorvik, Hutori, Lourenne and other nations. Speaking to wider support for provincial law enforcement bodies, Minister Booysens stated that the recent federal budget provides additional funding for provincial law enforcement, with a considerable portion of said funding going towards enhancing the training and equipment of law enforcement officers. In a leaked document earlier this week, it was revealed that directives from the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs had been released for the various provincial police including Kaap Provincial Police, Sint Pietereiland Provincial Police, Boerestaat Provincial Police, Ijkpieland Provincial Police and Tasselstaat Provincial Police, to develop special task forces to handle issues related to counter-terrorism, noting that the Federal Police’s Emergency Response Teams, although responsible for responding to terrorist incidents, are being stretched thin in responding to incidents throughout the country, highlighting that they [the ERT] has had to shelf numerous organised crime cases over increased domestic threats.

A separate surveillance law is expected to accompany the national security bill. According to the Minister, the bill will empower a new signals intelligence and information security agency with the ability to monitor telecommunication traffic and build profiles on individuals who it may deem to be a threat to the state. Seeking to allay fears of a creeping security state, Minister Booysens stated that this specific aspect of the agency’s power would be overseen by a separate committee of the Federal Parliament, with strict regulations on what information can be collected and the nature by which such information is both used and stored. An agency dealing with the issues surrounding cyber security is expected to the established with the purpose of ensuring the government’s renewed digital transformation agenda is rolled out on the most secure systems and that particular attention is paid to safeguarding the nation against cybernetic attacks.

The coming decades and centuries will prove extremely important to the future of Saridan. Amidst the mismanagement and general incompetence of previous administrations, and the ensuing socioeconomic train wreck that followed much of the decisions enacted by the nation's former conservative class, any plan for the reconstruction of the Saridani economy would need to be bold, wide-reaching, and swift. It will require the collective/combined energies of the nation's political class and a collective commitment among those within positions of power to see much of the necessary reforms to their completion, regardless of how difficult the pill may be to swallow. Aside from revealing the nation's precarious economic situation, the Reserve Bank of Saridan's report on the state of the Saridani economy pointed to some of the nation's more systemic issues including corruption, fragile institutions and weak laws governing the practices of those operating within the nation among many others. It concluded that without sensible, structural and fiscal reforms the concept of a strong economic recovery for the Saridani economy would not be materialised let alone attained. It read "The opinions of the public are noted in their yearning for a strong economic rebound. Thus it is important to note that should structural and fiscal reforms are ignored by the incoming administration, the concept of a strong economic rebound would not be materialised let alone attained." The report also pointed to the socioeconomic circumstance of many Saridani citizens. Highlighting interim statistics from the Ministry of Labour and Social Development, the Reserve Bank report stated that the unemployment situation in Saridan was reaching an inflexion point, whereafter a profound and catastrophic collapse of the Saridani labour market could occur without government intervention. The report opined, "Policies enacted by the previous administration and the lack thereof, have contributed largely to the current labour market crisis. The laissez-faire attitude of the nation's previous economic managers had allowed for unemployment to exceed its socially acceptable minimum, and the lack of decisive government intervention has exacerbated the situation to proportions not seen in centuries." It predicts that the collapse of the Labour market, at the hands of laissez-faire conservative policies, could alter the socioeconomic fabric of Saridan, sending much of the nation's poor and vulnerable into absolute poverty, from which the multiplier/cascading effect could mean the potential collapse of the wider Saridani economy.

Grabbing the bull by the horns, Minister-President Rosalie Breytenbach burst out the gates with furious speed to enact her Roadmap to Recovery. Speaking at a televised address at Whitehall and flanked by members of the Economic Advisory Committee and Federal Treasurer Dr Arnoux Rautenbach. Breytenbach stated that one of the priorities going into the coming months was gaining consensus among the Stadtholders as to how her economic plan would be implemented among the states. "Whilst we remain focused on stabilising the economy, we will work to develop a future economy parallel to this," she said during her address. She explained that the effect of deindustrialization within Saridan had been devasting with the nation's manufacturing & industrial capacity virtually destroyed as the nation's once-prominent firms moves to greener pastures. Minister Rautenbach explained that the economic portion of the Roadmap to Recovery was heavily predicated on re-industrialising Saridan. He explained, "In international trade, we've become to understand the concept of both comparative and absolute advantage. For Saridan, our comparative advantage remains our potential for industrial growth. Although throughout the provinces, industrial capacity has virtually collapsed, the Roadmap to Recovery sets out very clear objectives in the pursuit of re-industrialisation." Chairman of the Economic Advisory Committee Dr Wian Van Schalkwyk explained that out of the federal government's re-industrialisation strategy would flow investments into infrastructure (including roads, railways etc), clean energy production, digital infrastructure and the strengthening of the federal social safety net. "Although the Roadmap to Recovery may seem like a plan only to re-industrialise the nation, it is holistic in its approach to address numerous societal problems including unemployment, business growth and social welfare. Investments into these areas will flow from the over-arching principle of re-industrialisation. As we begin to pour investment into reviving our industrial potential, we will need to invest in railroads and highways to connect factories and communities, we will need to enhance the social safety net to ensure that the unemployed and our retirees are taken care of; from that will flow investment into education, healthcare and pensions." Dr Van Schalkwyk said in addressing questions from the media on the scope of Roadmap to Recovery.

Tying the nation's prospects on the regional and international stage to the performance and scope of the national economic recovery, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development Dr Erika Bezuidenhout and Federal Minister for Trade and Industry Rynold Badenhorst stated that Saridan had to reconnect itself to the global economy and begin the process of re-engagement with historic regional allies. Pointing to the enormous potential for rekindling the nation's relationship with the seleyan continent, Minister Bezuidenhout stated she intended to embark on a tour of the continent, with stops in Kanjor, Valruzia, Likatonia and Gaduridos. Minister Badenhorst noted that the federal government intends on following a policy of export-oriented industrialization, to boost domestic production and exports. He explained that Saridan may not have the capacity of other nations such as Lourenne and Indrala who due to their large populations are consumption-based economies.

Earlier this morning at a press conference at the cabinet offices in Koeistad, Federal Minister for Home Affairs Tiaan Booysens announced that the central government had approved the creation of a new, independent border patrol agency which it hopes will enable a more direct approach to securing the nation's borders against illegal guns and ammunition among other issues. The revelation comes amidst a groundbreaking report by the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs on the effectiveness and reliability of the Federal Police and the Saridani Navy on securing the nation's economic exclusion zone and the nation's natural, territorial borders. Coined the Moolman-Van Straaten Report, it pointed to numerous holes within the operating procedures of both entities, noting a general lack of coordination for operations and increased instances of foreign-made firearms turning up in firearms raids conducted by provincial police and the Federal Police themselves. According to the report, although the Federal Police and provincial law enforcement agencies had been working around the clock to stem the import of illegal firearms, large quantities were still making their way to the nation's streets among the nation's most notorious criminal gangs. The new border patrol agency, to be known as the Saridani Border Police (Seridjan Grenspolisie) would be an amalgamation of the customs and excise agency and the border patrol unit of the Federal Police and would be responsible for monitoring and patrolling the nation's maritime and territorial borders. Director-General of the Border Police, Johan Rensburg stated that there was much work for the agency in turns of building capacity and enhancing its operations. At a brief press conference at the Border Police’s headquarters in Koeistad, Rensburg stated that the agency intends on transforming its operations at all levels, from airport immigration services to maritime/border patrol services. He stated that he had been in deep consultation with the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs on the acquisition of new equipment for the agency including offshore patrol vessels, patrol boats and maritime patrol helicopters. The Director-General also confirmed that he intends on signing an MoU with the Federal Police on common operations, seeking to establish clear channels of communication and cooperation between the two agencies. A special tactics unit for the SGP(to be known as the Tactical Operations Unit - TOE) is to be formed with assistance from the Federal Police and the Saridani Navy’s Special Boat Group, with the sole purpose of providing a tactical response to situations arising both out at sea and land. "Whilst we aim to ensure we continue to cooperate with our partners within the Federal Police alongside building new relationships with provincial law enforcement, we must ensure that we are capable of conducting independent operations without the need of tactical units/firearms officers from the Federal Police," Director-General Rensburg concluded.
