New Verham visits Ostland; fostering new cooperation

Wolfsheim - State Minister Matteo Aigner and Foreign Minister Theodor Hamerling welcomed the cadre of New Verham officials in mid-May 5094; the first state visit between Ostland and New Verham in sometime. The State Minister joined the New Verham Foreign Minister Chötgörkhaaral, in addition to other diplomatic officials to discuss an important number of topics. The most notable being the agreement that Ostland and New Verham will eliminate most tariffs on New Verham imports of crop, meat and dairy in exchange the New Verham government will eliminate import tariffs on modern agricultural equipment, and heavy machinery. Ostland's economy largely revolves around its oil and petroleum based product economy and its natural resources; notably its mineral wealth that made it so attractive to Hulstrian colonist in previous centuries. In recent decades that Ostlandic economy has focused on a shift towards a consumer economy with a strong financial sector, one of the largest in Dovani and the post-colonial world. Corporations such as Oststahl AG, Bank des Ostens, New Motors Corporation (Kunikata: Nyūmōtāzu kabushikigaisha; ニューモーターズ株式会社 ) commonly called "Nyukabu", Electronics Development Group (Kunikata: Erekutoronikusu kaihatsu gurūpu; エレクトロニクス開発グループ ) commonly called "Erkag", Eastern Shipyards (Hulstrian: Ost Werft) and others make up significant portions of the Ostlandic economy.

State Minister Aigner noted that "We welcome the new found relations between New Verham and Ostland; it is a monumental day in our nations histories. We need increased trade, relations and cooperation between Dovani powers. We cannot ignore the fact that the world has largely neglected the collective "East"." Ostland officials have welcomed the warming relations and have stated that they seek to continue economic cooperation both bilaterally and through the Dovani Pact. Representatives from the General Staff allegedly met with representatives from the New Verham military to discuss inclusion into the Dovani Pact's joint military units; though this has remained unconfirmed among both sets of representatives. The State Minister announced that he had intentions to visit New Verham in the coming months and hoped that the discussions regarding Ostlandic and New Verham security and defense cooperation could build the foundation for a new era of Pan-Dovani cooperation.

Southern Ostland - Grand Duke Francis I has announced that he has ordered the Ostland Landwehr on high alert as tensions in the southern neighbor New Verham. Officials from the Foreign Ministry noted that they were unable to confirm that the deposed President and his administration was in southern Ostland. "Due the fluid nature of the situation we are unable to confirm reports that the deposed President and his administration is in southern Ostand. We have approached our fellow nations in the Dovani Pact and we sincerely hope that this situation can be resolved diplomatically and peacefully. We do not believe that war in any form, most notably civil war, is the appropriate course of action. Ostland is committed to a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the situation in New Verham." Ostland has routinely been required to dispatch forces to the border to manage a number of situations, largely to deal with the influx of refugees, humanitarian issues and a wider number of issues. Generaloberst Leopold Kelsen, the Chief of the General Staff, has ordered a number of units to formally mobilize and to prepare for full readiness. It is one the first major deployments for the Ostlandic Landwehr (Hulstrian: Ostlandic Defense Forces) in recent years and will be important to see how Ostland handles the logistics of the situation, including the mobilization on the home front.

In typical fashion, the Grand Duke has ordered the elite 1st Gebirgsjäger (Mountain) Brigade to the southern border, they will take charge of the defense of the border should New Verham forces; regardless of whose forces might pose a threat. The Gebirgsjager will be joined by elements of the 1st and 2nd Jäger Brigade (Mechanized), the 1st Panzer Brigade "Grand Duke" and elements of the various branches of the General Staff. According to Ostlandic defense watchers there have been an influx of Intelligence Bureau for the East officers, a number of Political Intelligence Bureau officers and the Foreign Armies Office. Rumors have also surfaced that the reformed special operations forces of Ostland have been deployed to the region. Representatives form the Foreign Ministry have been deployed to handle the influx of refugees. General (Mountain) Markus Meusburger has been placed in charge of the entire operation at the behest of the State Minister and Chief of the General Staff, Meusburger is a former staff officer in the Operations Department's Rear Area Office.

Ostland has deployed a number of new potent technologies for the first time. The Dorvish made Leopard 2A7+ is being deployed alongside the new Touryou produced Type 10 main battle tank which have been seamlessly integrated across Ostlandic and Togun units. Ostland has also shifted elements of the Ostlandic Air Force to southern air bases to improve oversight and reconnaissance in the region. A spokeswoman for the General Staff and the Ostlandic Landwehr noted that these deployments are typical in times of crisis.

Wolfsheim - State Minister Ulrich Hammesfahr, elected in October, 5190, has dealt with crisis after crisis and has handled them exceedingly well. The State Minister was seen leaving a security meeting with Grand Duke Friedrich III, Colonel-General Klemens Elser and several other defense officials after discussing the increasingly difficult situation continuing in North Dovani. The State Minister briefly spoke to the press outside of Wolfsheim, the residence of the Grand Duke. "The Grand Duke is naturally concerned with the events in North Dovani and the Ostlandic government is doing our best to handle the massive refugee crisis that this has created. I've spoke with the government of Utari Mosir and asked for their assistance but they remain hesitant to take on a large number of refugees due to their own economic situation. I can understand their hesitation, the Ostlandic economy has suffered greatly in recent years." The Ostlandic government, once of the strongest in the world, has faltered as trade broke down for the better part of the 52nd century as governments found themselves in a more pro-isolationist stance. Ostland's markets have recently experienced an uptick as many governments have began to use Ostland as a staging area for handling the situation in North Dovani; somethat the State Minister thanked many governments for and has welcomed the increased economic growth.

Colonel-General Klemens Elser spoke in addition to the State Minister and confirmed that the Ostlandic Armed Forces have been placed on its highest alter status in several decades. "We've deployed additional resources to various parts of the country; notably the island of Kamphon where we're monitoring as much as we can." The Ostlandic Armed Forces remain one of the more capable in the region and have experienced several fights and wars over the past several centuries and earned a reputation as a scrappy, smaller armed forces that has undergone significant reforms in recent decades to ensure that it remains a top-tier fighting force in the region.

Wolfsheim - State Minister Ulrich Hammesfahr condemned Trigunia and Utari Mosir's recent announcements stating that the North Dovani elections were fraudulent. The State Minister stated: "The notion that the North Dovani elections were somehow improper or fraudulent is nothing but a lie. The Dovani Pact and the Dovani Council both had electoral observers on the ground and while it is certain that there are issues, as with any democracy, we cannot find any sort of proof of large-scale fraud." The Foreign Ministry of Ostland has provided records produced by the Dovani Pact and the Dovani Council that provide several instances where voting sites were closed down due to maintenance issues, electrical failures or other things that the Dovani Pact and Dovani Council observers cited as problematic but not intentionally nefarious. Foreign Minister Emil Rottmayr backed up the State Minister and confirmed that Ostland had not credible intelligence regarding electoral irregularities. It is rumored that the Intelligence Bureau for the East was on the ground in North Dovani but Ostland has ignored requests to comment about sources within the Foreign Ministry which have cited alleged Intelligence Bureau for the East on the ground.

North Dovani visit to Ostland

Wolfsheim - Following a high-level state visit by North Dovani, the Ostlandic government confirmed a "...normalization of relations..." with North Dovani following the collapse of the dictatorial regime in the country. State Minister Ulrich Hammesfahr cited the visit as the first step towards bringing North Dovani back into the fold and welcomed their resumption of duties within the Dovani Council as a whole. "I sincerely hope that Dovani and other nations in the east can continue to live in peace and democracy." The Dovani Council has been a forum for the discussion of democracy and cooperation, it is much unlike the Dovani Pact and a reporter from questioned if they had intentions to turn the Dovani Council into something to "rival" the Dovani Pact and the State Minister swiftly said "No, the Dovani Council is a council of nations on Dovani to discuss democracy and cooperation: nothing more." He reiterated that the Dovani Pact was the go-to form of supra-national cooperation for Ostland and he had no intention to change that.

The State Minister noted that the re-opening of the North Dovani economy would be a natural boon for the collective North Dovani region due to the natural resources that North Dovani produces; Ostland has a similar economic situation to North Dovani in that a vast majority of the economy is based around natural resources such as oil and gas. In recent decades Ostland has shifted to being a military center for the Dovani Pact and, in addition to that, it has become a financial center for the Dovani Pact. "Economic cooperation with North Dovani to restore its economic prowess is quintessential to the success of the continent as a whole. I believe firmly that North Dovani and Ostland can cooperate at a strategic level to develop mutual prosperity with each other."

Southern Ostland - Ostlandic Chief of the General Staff Colonel-General Klemens Elser confirmed that Ostland had purchased eight new medium-range surface-to-air missiles that would provide the air defense system for Ostland. Ostland had began the process of replacing aging short range missile defense systems with a large-scale system that would be jointly managed by the Ostland Landwehr and Ostland Air Force. The new system, jointly developed by Touryou-based New Aerospace Ltd and Ostland-based Iron Navigations GmBH. The initial contract is for eight systems and it is expected to cost several million Ostlandic Marks and will be developed over the course of the next several years and dedicated to protecting Ostland from aerial attacks. Colonel-General Elser stated that the need for a new air defense system was required following the recent tensions with North Dovani. "We hope that this system will compete with other systems of the modern age, notably the Dorvish-made MEADS which, in our opinion, is one of the leading systems to be deployed in the world today. We just prefer more local control and we had better offers that fit our needs greater." Ostland has benefited greatly from innovations that have been driven by the high-tech economy based in the southern Touryou State and the deeper cooperation between the Hulstrian and Kunihito who collectively make up Ostland has produced a large number of technological corporations driven by high-tech success throughout the country.
