Government Pushes Forward With Controversial Act14 August 5315
Renewing its mandate with the uncontested 5314 elections, Perseverance Party (SEBAT) prepares to push forward with the controversial
Official Language and Minority Languages Act. This morning, a directive that orders removal of Majatran and Kalopian nameplates from public buildings was reportedly issued to government agencies. Transition period for schools to implement Official Language and Minority Languages Act will also be over next week. Compared to previous legislation that required schools to teach in at least two languages, namely Turjak, Kalopian or Majatran; new legislation obligates schools to teach in only Turjak, while the teaching of other languages are subject to Ministry of Education and Culture's discretion.
Kalopian and Majatran minority communities are rightfully furious. One of the leading figures of Majatran community, Mus'ab el-Pirani, called for protests in urban centers. Meanwhile, 4 cabinet members of Kalopian and Majatran descent, namely Abdulhakim el-Momin, Farah el-Farid, Tilemachos Anthiadis and Aikaterini Marinide are expected to hold a joint press conference endorsing the aforementioned legislation. Despite all the opposition, SEBAT seems defiant.
