Taoiseach pushes for establishment of the Gníomhaireacht Náisiúnta PóilíníJanuary 2nd 5433"A nation cannot stand when criminals roam freely, all acting like they are both their own empire and emperor." Taoiseach Pádraig Ó Cuana addressed the Dáil in a fiery speech earlier, calling for "an end to rampant, crime, corruption and general disregard for the law", and advocating for a new national law enforcement agency to handle these duties. The Gníomhaireacht Náisiúnta Póilíní, or GNP for short, is the proposed five department agency that the Taoiseach intends to end the national issue surrounding crime. Minister for Justice, Gearóid Mooney, has developed the five departments such that they will cover every potential crime, and has planned units for the departments that can handle specific types of cases. "The Roads Policing Department" Mooney states, "would act as first responders to incidents nationwide, along with the general management of traffic accidents and transport of detainees. They would certainly be working hand in hand with the Technical and Standard Crime Department, whom are responsible for the investigation of all non-serious crimes, along with the handling of the services' technical aspects."
Despite the lack of organised crime nationwide, the government is taking no chances with the Organised and Serious Crime Department being proposed as part of the service. The Organised and Serious Crime Department shares one of it's units, Special Operations Command, with the Special Crime and Security Department, responsible for the countering of terrorism and espionage. Neither Ó Cuana or Mooney spoke much further in depth about these departments, likely due to the sensitive nature of their work. They did however speak about the final department, the Corruption Department, which as the name implies is responsible for handling corruption withing the service. The bill proposing the agency has been to the Dáil, and is currently being negotiated over in order to maximise the speed of it's passing. The Taoiseach has stated his intention to implement the agency as fast as possible, and to end the "wave of crime and degeneracy".
