UPR Prepares for Upcoming Presidential Primaries October 19, 3108
BackgroundNext year, from April 30 until May 31, the Urban Party of Rutania will be conducting its first presidential primaries to decide who the party's nominee for President will be. But for right now, lets look at how the process will work.
ProcessRegistered UPR voters will go to the polls on a specific day and will vote for their choice. Each of the 5 provinces being delegated a specific amount of "points" based upon population. A candidate is allocated a specific number of that province's points based upon how we he/she did. The total number of points will be 500 and a candidate must win 375 to claim the nomination. If not, the nomination will be decided by the party's 100-member congress. Now we will take a look at the field of candidates that have so far made (and in the case of Mr. Holmes, not made) their decision to run. All candidates have until December 1 to file the necessary paperwork.
CandidatesSo far, only 2 candidates have declared their intention to run for the parties nomination; Alejandro Martinez and Bob Harkin. Some are speculating that the party's leader Reggie Holmes might throw his hat into the ring, though many are skeptical after he dodged the question several times on RNN's The First Word with Larry Donaldson.
Declared 50 year old
Alejandro Martinez is the current front runner in the race to be the party's nominee for President and rightfully so. His down to earth attitude and broad appeal among the masses makes people feel comfortable and gives the sense that he's 'one of us' despite the fact he is a multimillionaire. Did we mention he is a multimillionaire? Yep, he's estimated to be worth about 450 Million RUT and will likely be able to fund a majority of his campaign for the party's nomination
and for the presidency on his own.
His biggest weakness is his problems to connect to the independent voters who favor more taxes on the rich and corporations, something that Martinez is against. In fact, the main reason his bid for President failed was because of his comments during a fundraiser where he compared the independent voters to "a bunch of cry baby's"...ouch. In the end Martinez paid for it in the the 3108 election where he only received about 2% of the entire vote and of course finished dead last. Nevertheless, as long as Holmes or some "super candidate" don't enter the race, he pretty much has the nomination in the bag.
Congressman
Bob Harkin (UPR-Menwell, Grovton) is a freshman representative who is relatively unknown nationally and within the party. Many see him challenging Joan Andrews next year as leader of the party's Progressive Faction and nothing more. For Harkin to even have a chance, he needs to gain exposure and rally his base or else he is doomed to an early exit in the primaries in April.
Potential CandidatesReggie Holmes has stated numerous times that he is not considering running for the party's nomination and we believe him; or at least we will when the deadline to file paperwork to the party's National Election Committee passes on December 1.
Declined to RunCongressman
John Wise (UPR-Freemont) is the party's congressional leader and the chief spokesperson of the party in the Assembly. He decided on in August that he would not run for the nomination and instead would focus on the legislative goals of the party for the next 3 years.
