AN jubilant after 4593 electionsThe leader of the Action National, Henri de Lambord-Montpelier, has called for the government's resignation after the 4593 elections led to the UpL losing its absolute majority for the first time in 35 years. "Madame Rodier should face the facts; the country wants change", was his first comment after the full results had been announced. The AN's results exceeded its own expectations, according to insiders, and seem a vindication of the party's hardline stance on social issues and constitutional reform.
Nevertheless, the party's chances to get into power seem slim, given its lack of a prospective coalition partner. This might not be entirely negative for it, though, according to Roger Nostin, professor of history at the University of Iztapalata:
The result will almost certainly result in some sort of UpL-PR arrangement, although of what kind - and how stable - remains an open question. Also the Action is probably slightly disappointed at their narrow failure to exceed a third of the seats, which would otherwise have granted them a constitutional veto. Nevertheless, the consequence might benefit the AN in the long term, since it can now position itself as the sole voice of opposition to a troubled UpL-PR marriage of convenience.
