The man killed was 22-year-old Park Dae-hyun, a member of the Emperor's Kyo Honour Guard, standing at his post along the Palace walls.
Hours later, the terrorist group "Martyr's of the Republic" claimed responsibility, describing the attacker as a “soldier of the cause.” The Supreme Prosecution Service, which handles all criminal cases including terrorist attacks, is taking over the investigation.
Prosecutor Liu Wang gave a brief news conference near the scene of the attack. He confirmed that the attacker, who has been identified as 24-year-old mechanic Chen Gaowei, had shouted pro-republican statements during the assault.
Ma Yingshi, 34, was posing for a picture with his eight-year-old son outside the Imperial Palace when he heard shouts. He says that he picked up his son, grabbed his wife's hand and ran from the scene "as fast as [he] could."
A few minutes later, he said, he heard sirens blaring as police officers rushed toward the assailant.
“I heard someone shout 'for the Republic!' and then I just heard screaming,” Ma said, adding that he did not see what happened next. “I was so scared that I just decided I had to do what I could to make sure my family was safe... I had no idea what might be about to happen.”
The Martyr's of the Republic group is the most public and notable face of pro-republican extremism. In 4274,
the group sent acid bombs around Tian'an in advance of a monarchy restoration amendment, killing one security guard at the Lotus Party Headquarters. A year later, the group also claimed responsibility for collaborating with Chen Ruogang on the
assassination of Green Party leader Song Yi.
The attack also follows a spike in pro-republican extremism, including the
attack on Jiang Zongren eleven years ago, among other smaller incidents.
The Imperial Household Agency has not yet made an official statement, though it is rumoured that the attack has deeply concerned the Emperor. There have also been accounts of smoke rising from the Alter of Heaven.
