Social Democratic Union "enthusiastic" about upcoming election, leader says
Despite the radical overhaul of the party a positive future lies ahead, according to Gladys Armstrong

Gladys Armstrong has said she is "extremely ethusiastic and positively hopeful" about the party's prospects ahead of the upcoming election in December this year. The SDU leader admits however that "some caution is needed" in regards to what she describes as a "massive shift in the party's platform".

Armstrong is right to be cautious. It is less than three years ago since the far-left Communist Party of Luthori reformed itself, becoming the Social Democratic Union, or SDU, following years of underlying tensions between internal factions and a power vacuum that emerged following the death of its beloved General Secretary, Chester Greerson.

The Communist Party's internal infighting often spilled into the public sphere highlighting the tensions and divisions faced by the Luthorian left. The hard line Communist faction despised the moderate Socialist and Social democratic members who flocked to the party following the collapse of the Social Democratic Party in 4316. The public spats between the different factions worsened by the influx of new party members during this period proved devastating for the party. Between 4316 and 4327 support for the party slumped. Over four million voters were shed.

The death of Chester Greerson in 4330 rocked the party. A well-liked politician who acted as a source of stability, Greerson came to recognise the need to capture more than just Communists if Luthori's left were to make a serious attempt towards entering government. In what would be his final speech as General Secretary, Chester Greerson had fittingly called for "peace and reconciliation" between those on the left of Luthorian politics.

Gladys Armstrong campaigned on Greerson's call for unity in her leadership bid and played a major role in reforming the party. According to her, "spats between rival left-wing groups only helped the right-wing parties. It was a major turn-off for potential voters and ruined our public image." Right-wing newspapers and other media outlets seized upon this and derided the party as a threat to 'stability and national security'.

"Now that is in the past. The SDU has united the left, we recognise that if we are to win we must put our differences aside and work towards achieving our common goals", she adds. "Not only this, but we now have a positive platform and a message of hope which makes us attractive to other more centrist voters - something which we've never had before."

There is a positive vibe around SDU headquarters and a sense of vibrant enthusiasm fuelled by new younger members which the old Communist Party lacked. However, behind closed doors senior party officials were keen to talk down their party's electoral prospects. Some within the SDU are worried that despite the shift towards the centre and the significant rebranding of the party the newly formed Luthori Republican Party and in particular, the Luthori People's Party, will be serious challengers in terms of capturing the left-wing and progressive vote.

One source said that "we will either come out of it as the largest party or we'll be absolutely ravaged by the newcomers, it is that unpredictable. The alliance with the Progressives will be of the utmost importance, both now and for the foreseeable future."

RCP Geared Up for Campaign Period

As Luthori nears another general election, this one will be the last for Marquis Elad Weston as he approaches his 60th birthday, and confirmed his intention to pass the reigns to his son, Alexander. The RCP enters its 118th year of national political contention in the new year after the election.

The RCP have begun their general election campaign with a rally in Youk, where the Party still dominate local politics, and are promising a wide ranging agenda in the new Imperial Diet. RCP Leader, Marquis Elad Weston, promised to go for every seat in the election, and to take the fight to the United Front which had risen in Luthori over recent months.

He focused on the need to secure a new term of Government, as a Coalition if required, but also on his agenda for the next term; ranging from capital punishment reintroduction to cryptocurrency regulation, from reauthorising nuclear weapon production to ending the need for worker councils in all businesses, from outlawing gender reassignment to legalising all naturally occurring drugs.

Polls show no Party is likely to get even close to an outright majority, but the RCP faces heavy competition from the Progressive Party, whilst the SDU will face opposition from the LRP and LPP.

Government Formation Resting on the Shoulders of Henry Perot
Image
The fate of the government rests on the Kingmakers of this election, Henry Perot and his Reform Party. With protocol dictating only the largest party be allowed to propose a cabinet, the largest party in the Diet, the Social Democrats have proposed a big-tent coalition with the likeminded Progressive Party and the...less likeminded Reform Party. Whilst the SDP and Progressives are left leaning parties with strong Artitanian sympathies, the Reform Party is a stark contrast, offering a strongly laissez-faire economic platform with a heavy emphasis on opposition to the Artianian Union of late. The main uniting factors between these three parties are their somewhat liberal stances on social issues, which again, the Reform Party are the most conservative out of the three on, supporting many conservative measures such as the death penalty, but overall have a solidly classical-liberal platform.

With the Diet in the shape that it is, and the non-conformist Reform Party seeing a surge in popularity, a coalition was never going to be an easy option. Many were astounded when the first cabinet proposal featured the unnecessary inclusion of the Luthori People's Party, who not only were needed to reach a majority, but are also the ideological opposites of Reform, however it was of no surprise that cabinet proposal crumbled. With the SDP and Progressive Party happy to unite with each other, and offering the olive branch to Reform, all eyes are on Henry Perot and his party on whether or not they will accept the SDP's offer of government or not, if so this being the first time the Reform Party has entered government. Many grassroot supporters are split on what they want to happen, with some particularly on the party's right feeling it would be a betrayal for Reform to link up with leftist parties, with other believing Reform's presence in government is necessary to push forward their agenda. Regardless of which route the party takes, there will be a portion of the grassroots left unsatisfied and in need of reassurance.

Perot Holds SDP & Progressive Party at Gunpoint
Image
As expected, Henry Perot has unveiled an ambitious set of terms and conditions deciding whether or not his party will enter coalition with the SDP and Progressives. Putting forward some flagship Reform policies such as treaty withdrawals, abolishing national service and restricting the amount of refugees allowed into the country by a massive amount. The proposals were promptly shut down by both the SDP and the Progressives, leaving the ball in the court of the Royal Conservatives and the rest of the right to determine what government will take form after this period of turmoil for the government.

Henry Perot Laughs Off SDU Criticism
Image
Henry Perot has laughed off what he has called a "deranged temper tantrum" from the SDU, following James Anderson's attack on Perot and his party after cabinet talks crumbled. Perot asserted "Anderson and his leftist cronies seem to have absolutely no idea what Reform's agenda was, when we put forward many policies, including our flagship policies of decreasing foreign-aid, cuts to immigration and the reinstatement of capital punishment which are well known to the public and have been something our party has held close to our hearts since the beginning, his party trembled in shock, thinking we would only push for policies we had in common, such as some basic social policies. It's absurd to think the only tool for negotiation would be passing through laws they support anyway, Anderson and the SDU seem to have forgotten what negotiation actually is!" He also blasted Anderson for being "bigoted" by "dismissing the genuine and reasonable beliefs of much of the electorate as far-right neo-fascism" and asserted "politicians who seem to be tone deaf to the actual beliefs of working class Luthorians and indeed many Luthorians in general are what people are fed up with, and that's the sort of politician James Anderson is". Perot then finished his statement with "at the end of the day, the core ideologies of our two parties are simply incompatible, the SDU are a Keynesian globalist bleeding heart liberal party, whilst we're capitalists who put Luthori and its citizens first. It was never going to work out!"

Luthori is still without a cabinet, with many suspecting the Royal Conservatives will attempt to lure Reform into some sort of deal, although with their opposition to other flagship Reform policies such as abolishing conscription, many believe a deal will also struggle to be forged with them. The most likely outcome is either a SDU-PP pact with the Luthori People's Party, or an early election due to the Republican's dissolving.
