Manifestations for the controversial establishment of the death penaltyCivil associations, judges, prosecutors and political parties show their division on the subjectProtesters against the death penalty in Auroria, SeluciaAfter the recent approval of the death penalty in Selucia for the first time in its modern history by 432 votes in favor (Rexist Party, Factio Republicana and one of the parties of the government, Factio Imperialis), 249 votes against (In Marea-Civis Sinistram, government leaders and heads of state) and 69 abstentions (Populi Factio Optimatium), a deep gap has been opened in the Selucian society. Immediately after the approval of the sentence, the general secretary of In Marea-Civis Sinistram and head of government, Atia Vinicia Gryllus, announced that they will review the government agreements with Factio Imperialis and Populi Factio Optimatium after their vote in the new law, as well as the immediate submission of an appeal in the Supreme Court of Selucia.
The
new law, which legalizes the death penalty for those considered "capital crimes" (parricide, assassination, murder of a person under the age of 13, murder of a police officer, murder of person with disabilities, murder-for-hire, murder of multiple victims, murder of witnesses, and murder committed in the course of committing serious felony offenses, including torture, rape, arson, or armed robbery. Being an accomplice or attempting to commit a capital felony is also a capital offense), through the use of guillotine, hanging or firing squad, has opened a deep debate in civil, legal and political society.
From the association of progressive judges, it has been already announced the refusal to this type of convictions before the supreme court of the country is pronounced on it, something that is expected in the coming months.
The Praetors of Insularia, Cor Patriae and Oriensos (IMCS) have also announced their rejection of the new law, and the creation of other appeals that will also be sent to the highest court of the country.
It is a national shame that this law has been approved in the Senate of the Republic, especially because it has been approved thanks to the votes in favor of one of the parties of government, Factio Imperialis, that with this decision has moved away positions with respect to us.
said the Praetor de Cor Patriae
Praetors of Insularia and Oriensos have gone further, affirming that the approval of this law is "an attack against human dignity and fundamental rights", a "return to past and barbaric times" and "a triumph of fanaticism".
Jurist by profession, the Praetor de Oriensos Passilus Volantus, has stated that:
The establishment of the death penalty in Selucia does not correspond to moral and legal principles to build a more just society, as they want us to believe from Factio Republicana, promoters of this law and that we all know in what political position they are. What they intend with this is to be able to unleash their fanaticism. This new law will allow them, in some concrete case, the elimination of any political adversary, because they have gone much further on other occasions with other laws, and with this they will not lose the opportunity. In the same way, with this law they intend to make any sentence that is issued final, without giving rise to any reform in the judgments. Judges are people too, and judges can be wrong too. In the same way, there are complicated and convoluted crimes, in which it peope is incriminated and, finally, it is demonstrated years later that they are innocent. What would happen in those cases? Will Factio Republicana go to repair the pain caused by passing this law, moved by instincts of revenge and not justice, to the families of the executed, to tell them that they are sorry and that it will not happen again? I feel disgust for some people who dirty the image of this nation.
The youths of In Marea-Civis Sinistram, the IUVIM, have called for social mobilization in the streets, and the head of government, Mrs. Gryllus, has authorized the demonstrations.
These protests are lawful and they have every reason in the world. From the government, at least since our party, we show the profound rejection of this new law and with the appeal filed before the Supreme Court, we hope that this situation will be fixed as soon as possible. The support of Factio Imperialis to this law has been the definitive moment, and this forces us to review our relations with a party that is in favor of such barbarity.
Some pharmacies in the country have already shown their refusal to provide anesthesia for the executions, in order to avoid damaging their own image.
If they want to execute someone, they will have to do it by their own means and portray themselves before society. We are not going to collaborate with this cruelty improper of our times.
has stated the director of Colosseum Pharmaceuticals, one of Selucia's largest pharmaceutical companies.
On the other hand, demonstrations have also been called to show support for this law, especially in regions such as Occidentria.
It was time for the murderers not to go unpunished for ridiculous sentences and to show no sign of repentance
, said one of the organizers of the demonstration "Death Penalty Yes."
