Oleria raises controversy on the elimination of the police
Olympio Celer-Loukas proposes defunding the body and allocating it to two separate entities: the firefighting department and civil groupsOlerian Minister of Defence Pisentia Laenas reviewing the troops of the regionAfter a new victory at the polls by more than 60% of the votes, Olympio Celer-Loukas has revealed the main lines of his star plan for this legislature: that of eliminating the police force and redirecting the activities carried out by them in different scopes.
Speaking to the media after confirming the victory of Celer-Loukas and the continuation of the current government of Oleria, the Minister of Defense of the island Pisentia Laenas has confirmed that the plan is going ahead, and that she hopes that the central government will not put any stick to it.
"This decision is an important step for many citizens of Oleria, who do not see the police forces as heroes or role models but rather as people supposedly in charge of ensuring the safety of all citizens but who, at the time of the truth, they are not capable of fulfilling their mission, leading part of the citizens, especially the most disadvantaged, to doubt the integrity of the police force and not to collaborate with them, aggravating existing social problems. "
Asked about the position that the central government - led by the MPR one more legislature after winning its candidates the general elections by 52% compared to 48% of COSIRA, Mrs. Laenas has affirmed that she sees no legal impediments in the future law , since current legislation "grants the regions dominion over the police forces of each of the islands."
According to the draft presented by Celer-Loukas himself and which will be voted on by the regional Assembly as soon as the final adjustments are made, the idea is to completely dissolve Oleria's police force and replace it with different civilian bodies. The Oleria firefighting department, which has the general approval of the island's citizens and ranks among the most approved institutions of Selucia, will continue to be in charge of carrying out rescues, emergency medical services and prevention and extinction of fires, but a specialized unit within the body will be trained to carry out the most dangerous rescues in case of emergencies or high-level natural disasters.
Security at the city level will be carried out by neighborhood units, chosen by neighborhoods, who will be in charge of patrolling the streets and each city council will train in personal defense and legislation.
Mental health services, on the other hand, will be made up of qualified personnel, specialized in different branches of mental health and who will be able to provide adequate help to each person and situation, replacing police forces that, on many occasions , they do not find the correct solution to deal with the problem.
Traffic services is another area that will be reformed, as it will be made up of experts in road traffic. Within this unit, there will be a group specifically trained for vehicle chases that will be equipped with non-lethal weapons.
The investigation services and forensic services will also be made up of professionals in this area, and all those members of the police who currently have their degrees will be kept in their jobs.
All of them will also receive courses on gender and racial equality, as a way of trying to tackle at the root what can be a problem when dealing with certain crimes.
The Olerian government believes that these reforms will increase citizens' confidence in the ways the region has to protect them, and that it will help alleviate the possible problems that may arise in Oleria. Likewise, Celer-Loukas is committed to the implementation of restorative justice as a good model to follow when applying sentences.
When citizens are asked about this possible reform, 59% say they "agree" or "strongly agree", while 41% say "no opinion", "disagree" or "strongly disagree" . Despite the divisive nature of the matter, Celer-Loukas has confirmed that the bill will be voted on in the regional Assembly, where it is expected to pass without major problems according to internal polls of the Quirites - elected members of the assembly.
From the Police Association of Oleria, one of the two in which the island's police force is grouped, they consider that this law "stigmatizes its members" and "puts the focus on those who enforce the law and not on those who break it. " Its spokesman, Argyrippus Metilius, has accused the island's government of being "complicit in the decline of the region," and has asked the Selucian government to intervene if the regional Assembly passes the law.
They have also accused the island's Minister of Defense of not looking out for the interests of the members of the police force, who will end up "on the streets" with no other resources to hold on to.
Speaking to the media to deny these claims, Mrs. Laenas has confirmed that her ministry is working on a plan to relocate all those police officers who lose their jobs, either by reincorporating to the new services after passing a psycho-technical test or Either by means of the payment by the region of some new studies of average degree or university.
