Prefect Calls for Cool Heads Over MUN Crisis
She Says Vanukean-Istalian Relationship Must Remain Strong Whether Istalexit Happens Or Not

Image

July 4446 - Vanukean Prefect Dr Ershébef Trmékez has called for calm and level heads on both sides of the argument as the Majatran Union of Nations looks set to lose a second of its full member states.

She said that every nation was perfectly within its right to leave the supranational economic and security organisation if they so wished. However, she said that mutual prosperity and economic stability required all nations remaining on good terms into the future and the right exit deal being done.

Her comments come after the decision by founding member Cildania to leave abruptly and following a referendum carried out by key ally Istalia, which demonstrated that people in the country were ready to quit the MUN - a matter now being discussed by the nation's politicians.

Following the Majatran Financial crisis, which led to the major devaluation of the Lira and severely harmed many Romulan-based corporations, many independent experts believe that Vanuku has now surpassed Istalia as the largest economy on the continent.

Dr Tremezk reinforced that belief when she spoke to members of her party the Z-MJP during their annual conference in Vrzkel in northern Vanuku.

"It is our duty as the largest economy and military power on Majatra to do all within our ability to strengthen and reinforce the ties between our continental neighbours. It was our true belief that the values proposed at the very outset by the architects of the MUN would do just that - a strong economic bond, free trade, tariff-free borders and a robust security component that allowed member states to share best military practice, technology and benefit from mutual defence.

"However, it is clear that some of the subsequent decisions, such as the trial on a common commodity currency have not appealed to some nations. Although there was never a plan to implement this without the full endorsement of each member nation and a full and lengthy testing and feasibility process, some have taken it as the first step towards a centralising of decision-making and a threat to sovereignty and policy making by national governments.

"We regret that this was the perception and regret, very much, Cildania deciding their future lay elsewhere without further consultation. But we must listen to what nations are saying to us. If the people of Istalia are voting yes to an MUN exit, we must ask them why and "what can we do to keep you in the fold?", rather than say "you cannot leave without recriminations".

"Whatever the future holds the relationship between Vanuku and Istalia is key to the continent's future. Vanuku has a long-standing bilateral deal of free trade and economic co-operation with Istalia and ever since the war to free Hulstria of the Nimitz regime we have co-operated defensively to the betterment of Majatra and Terra.

"We cannot perceive a future with an isolated Istalia it makes no sense that any nation on Majatra or beyond would want that either - unless they are intent on harming our continent.

"Similarly, Istalia knows that whether its future is within or without the MUN it must maintain good relations with the MUN and all nations on the continent in order for its recovering economy to continue to grow again.

"So this is why all parties must be calm and rational about this. We must sit down and discuss the future and make sure we obtain right outcome for all parties involved. Bickering and falling out solves nothing - making threats will never work. Instead, we must find a way to take things forward and compromise where we must."

The Prefect said she was willing to bring all interested parties together for a meeting to discuss the possible way forward and to look at proposals such as integrating the MUN and Majatran Alliance, which, she said, was always Vanuku's desire from the offset.

Prefect Confirms Meeting Set Up With Istalian PM
Face-to-Face Talks In Romula Will Help to Shape Future Of Continental Co-operation

Image
Prefect Trmékez pictured during her recent trip to inspect Vanukean business operations in the Great Jelbek Confederation.

January 4447 - Prefect Dr Ershébef Trmékez has confirmed she will be meeting with Istalian Prime Minister Cecilio Barzetti in Romula to discuss the economic future prosperity of Majatra.

The relationship between the Majatran Union of Nations (MUN) and the Majatran Alliance (MA) will form the centrepiece of the talks, the Prefect confirmed, but also high on the agenda will be bilateral trade and security agreements between southern Terra's two great powers and the opening up of free trade corridors across the continent.

Dr Trmékez also called on nations such as Deltaria and Cildania to participate in talks so that any issues can be hammered out before they become more problematic.

She said: "I will reiterate what I said earlier: Majatran future prosperity depends on co-operaton between all out nations. Whether those nations are part of the MUN, the MA, or otherwise, they are all crucial to our long-term stability. That is why I will be meeting with the Istalian Prime Minister and why I encourage other nations who have expressed concerns, such as Deltaria and Cildania, to get involved. Your involvement is vital.

"Together we can discuss and resolve issues; sitting in isolation will benefit no one."

Nationalised Post Office Service With a Commercial Edge

Meanwhile, on the domestic front, the government is set to implement a major economic change in one of the country's vital services.

The postal service, which is currently operated by a series of private companies, is to be nationalised - but will retain a commercial edge. Under the National Post Office Act, the government has announced plans to set up the company by acquiring existing private enterprises.

The new organisation, which will be called Vanukean Mail (VM), will then be floated on the stock market with the government retaining a 51 per cent controlling interest. The remaining shares will be available for purchase by interested parties.

Infrastructure Minister Jazir Dunkáraky said: "We intend to introduce a majority state-owned but commercial post office agency to help better regulate this vital service, to ensure people in all areas of the country receive a regular postal service, wherever they may live and to help raise revenue for the government through traditional methods of mail delivery and e-commerce."

Fully-private postal/courier companies will still be allowed but will be heavily regulated and encouraged to look at untapped delivery markets to complement the national service.

Comprehensive Review of Submarine Fleet Ordered
Study will pave the way for new attack and ballistic missile craft development programme to keep navy at cutting edge

Image
One of Vanuku's current nuclear ballistic submarines.

June 4447 - A full review of Vanuku's attack and ballistic missile submarine portfolio and the undersea fleet's existing and future capability has been ordered.

The review is to be carried out by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Armed Forces High Command and leading naval contractor Shipyard Havendam. It is expected to last for 18 months.

It is understood that the review will pave the way for a new research and production project aimed at upgrading the existing fleet - or even developing new classes of attack and ballistic missile submarines.

Money has been freed up in the defence budget following the completion of the S-44 Tanhri Stealth Fighter development and production project earlier this decade, which cost 3.5 Trillion VAN and took around half a century.

Currently, the primary attack submarine used by the Vanukean navy features a diesel-electric propulsion engine while the nation's ballistic missile submarine is based on a nuclear reactor system and is capable of deploying missiles with nuclear warheads over thousands of miles.

The merits of both systems will be analysed as will the full array of ordnance, sensor and detection systems as well as structure, capacity, depth capability and many other factors that feature on the existing classes.

Speaking before leaving for the MUN-MA Conference in Istalia, Prefect Dr Ershébef Trmékez said: "We have world-leading armed forces, capable of projection around Terra to secure both our interests and those of our allies. But being at the forefront of military advancement and remaining at the vanguard of maintaining peace and stability is an ongoing process, which requires time, considerable money, skill and unswerving determination.

"Fortunately, Vanuku remains the most resolute nation on Terra in terms of its pursuit of these vital attributes. That is why as one game-changing project is completed in terms of the S-44 fighter, we must look to another. Therefore I have instructed the Ministry of Defence to carry out a full and comprehensive review of our submarine fleet and to propose developments and upgrades necessary to ensure its remains at the cutting edge throughout the second half of the 45th century."

Agricultural Policy Shift Puts Market Profitability Ahead of Environmental Concerns
Subsidies Will Give Domestic Farmers Upper Hand Against Food Crop Importers, But Environmental Groups Are Critical.

Image
Mass production of crops such as hybrid wheat will now be seen as more profitable by farmers who will receive market-focussed government subsidies.

January 4449 - There has been mixed reaction to the Vanukean government's decision to shift its focus in terms of agricultural subsidies. For several years more than 5 billion VAN has been handed out annually to farmers who grow environmentally-friendly crops.

However, that is to change later this year when the Agricultural Profitability Bill comes into effect. Instead, the subsidies will be handed out based on market demand for the crops being grown.

The government has said this approach will stimulate the domestic agricultural sector and attract further investment in a vital area of the economy.

Z-MJP Food and Agriculture Spokesperson Ibram Jisháksrmko Shténn said that critical food crops such as wheat, rice and maize which can be grown in abundance in the rural areas of western Mkldrekrnek would now receive more attention after being largely sidelined by domestic farmers. GM crop cultivation and hybrids would also receive more focus as the government subsidies would apply to them too.

He said: "The advances we have made in farming techniques and the regulations we have in place on pesticides and chemical use mean that farmers, by default, now grow much more environmentally friendly crops on their land. In addition, a return to a market-driven subsidy policy means that our farmers can compete more effectively against foreign importers and this will help make prices of crops such as corn and wheat more competitive for consumers."

Some environmental campaigners believe the move is a betrayal of the Sharma Climate Accords that Vanuku signed up to 15 years ago and would see a return to a government-incentivised profit-first culture rather than one focussed on sustainability.

However, the move was welcomed by union leaders who said it would give farmers the cutting edge against cheaper foreign imports.

Aldreke Tomasz, General Secretary of the Vanukean Farmers Union (VFU), said: "We have been campaigning for this change for several years. The production of vital food crops was falling into the hands of foreign competitors and that reliance and shifts was increasing with every year that went by. We should now see a return to expansive domestic food crop production a situation which will be welcome by consumers throughout Vanuku."

Deal to Supply Dankuk Air Force With Fighter Jets Completed
Commission Forms Part Of Ongoing Multi-Billion VAN Programme to Modernise Dranian Airforce

Image
The Z-35 multi-role fighter features prominently in the order placed by the Dranian Government.

June 4449 - Vanuku has completed an order consisting of nearly 40 fighter jets for Dankuk as the first part of a multi-billion VAN/DRA deal to help upgrade the Grand Imperial Union's air force.

A total of 30 Z-35 multi-role fighters and 8 S-10 Tanhri Stealth Fighters have now been shipped to the north Dovanian nation with Vanukean air force specialists providing training for Dranian pilots, ground crew and engineers.

Dankuk ordered the aircraft in 4447 and the contract was awarded to government-subsidised aerospace corporation Wrnukaék Tanhri. It followed an expansive trade and infrastructure deal struck between the two countries earlier in the decade.

Meanwhile, Vanuku has ordered one of Dankuk's heat and cyclic compression engine submarines as part of the Kingdom's full review of its undersea fleet.

The design will be studied by Vanukean scientists to determine whether the virtually silent running propulsion technology can be incorporated into its own development programme and complement its current combination of diesel-electric and nuclear marine propulsion engine systems.

Prefect Dr Ershébef Trmékez said: "Dankuk's position in north Dovani has stabilised and its economy is expanding. There are strong rumours that Its neighbour Kazulia will lift long-standing sanctions and the MUN continues to utilise a military base there enhancing security in the region. Vanuku is helping to reinforce this stability and helping the nation grow with its extensive trade and infrastructure project deals. This is now being complemented with a multi-billion VAN ongoing programme to modernise the Dranian armed forces."

Government Calls For Urgent Talks With New Leaders of Deltaria
Assurances Sought Over Future Direction of the Republic Following Military-Led Coup

Image
Deltarian Grand Governor Jakub Mrázek has been placed under house arrest as a consequence of the coup.

July 4449 - Prefect Dr Ershébef Trmékez has asked for urgent talks with the new military and political leaders of the Deltarian government as fears over the future of the central Majatra Republic grow.

The Prefect said she would be willing to travel to Čachtice for face-to-face discussions with the ruling SLS Party's prominent members, including Miroslav Válek, to look at a path forward following this spring's military coup which saw Grand Governor Jakub Mrázek placed under house arrest.

Relations between Vanuku and Deltaria have warmed recently with both nations enjoying the free trade benefits of MUN membership and both sharing responsibility to rebuild Jelbania. But the Vanukean government is believed to fear a return to the situation at the start of century which saw diplomacy fail - a position which led to the two countries embarking on an attritional and costly war.

The Prefect said: "Our ambassador in Deltaria is in the process of contacting Mr Válek and his contemporaries to better gauge the situation there and to work out a way forward.

"Majatra cannot afford another destabilising incident and Deltaria's expanding role in continental affairs means we cannot sit idly by. This is why I have asked for urgent talks with the new regime in Deltaria and will seek assurances over the direction the country is moving in and what that means for our relationship - particularly in terms of Jelbania, but also in terms of its general foreign and overseas trade outlook."
