Porto dos Santos: As Tukarali is in the midst of economic and social recovery the government is already slowly looking towards other objectives as well in its efforts to strengthen the overall standing and capabilities of a wide range of Tukaralian sectors, expertises and services. One such thing is defense, a controversial topic within Tukarali. Many people associate defense with the old military junta and thus have no desire to divert resources to the military in fears of a relapse in which the dictatorship returns. But in this term many of the former leadership of the junta have been arrested and put on trial, with experts now believing the military is once more a stable and non threatening institution. In light of these developments the Ministry of Defense has been looking at opportunities to reform the military despite its limited resources for now. With this in mind they have proposed the "Comprehensive Adjustment of Defense Strategy" or CADS to the Assembly which is a series of mostly administrative, logistical and organizational reforms for the armed forces aimed at being low cost but also being a starting point for any future developments. In the CADS the ministry has first of all outlined the overall goals of defense strategy. This is described as being "the primary source of defense for Tukaralian sovereign territory. Its primary mission as a fighting force is to be a quick to respond, steadfast and strong force capable of responding ot a wide variety of threats domestic and abroad." In this mission the Army and Navy are classified as the most important branches as they together "form the bridge and the pavement needed to carry the weight of the nation." Besides outlining goals the reform also makes concrete changes. The Army is to lose its divisional structure in favour of a brigade structure, with forces to be organized into 15 brigades which totals around 60.000 men in total which in turn are divided administratively into two armies, the home army and the foreign army. 12 brigades will be housed within the home army while 3 will be housed within the foreign army structure. The brigades will all have their own seperate command structure with a coordinating role for Army Command of the home and foreign armies which draft overall battle plans and help brigade leadership on the ground. In the reform the immensely strict hierarchy that has dominated Tukaralian defense will also be adressed, with commanders from bottom to the top being allowed much more operational freedom to achieve their goals then they were used to before.

The navy in its turn is to be organized into squadrons, with a total of 8 squadrons all stationed at naval stations or military ports in the country. The squadrons enjoy major operational freedom, with the only overarching body/personel being the Commander of the Naval Forces and his office, which serves a coordinating role with the ministry of defense in drawing up battle plans and routs as well as serving as the highest naval commander which means he or she may order squadrons on missions. Squadrons themselves are commanded by a Naval Commander which directs all forces in the squadron and decides the approach of missions. The bill explicitely states that there is a desire for more squadrons and possibly a overarching fleet structure whenever naval forces have been significantly build up. The airforce will in this reform be organized into a "Operational Command" led by the Airforce Commander which directs operations, hands out missions and directs overall airforce activity. Furthermore it is organized into airbase units, with every airbase being assigned a set number of squadrons which will then be given a area of operations to patrol, train and oversee the skies. During actual combat operations, the Operational Command serves a commanding and coordinating role and can direct forces from every airbase to missions.

Besides operational reforms the names of the branches are also set to change, with the Army to be named the Tukarali Ground Force, the navy to be named the Tukarali Naval Forces and the airforce to retain its Tukaralian Airforce name. Additions to these branches have also been put in this bill, with the Naval Forces to gain the Tukaralian Marine Corps as a additional branch, serving as elite naval infantry, while the Airforce will be reintroduced to the Tukaralian Paratroop Force, serving as elite aerial infantry. The total costs of the reforms is estimated to be 2 billion, within line of expectations by the Ministry of Defense. The reforms do mean a significant downsize of the Armed Forces at least for now but according to Minister of Defense Eduardo Barreto this downsize "is in line with our overall goal of creating a more effective, better organized and quickly deployable force that can better adapt to the new defense environment."

Porto dos Santos: While the government is working to improve the domestic economy with a variety of far reaching economic reforms and stimulus packages it is also looking outwards in an effort to improve regional relations and also improve economic cooperation. The Seleyan Union was once a major organization on the Seleyan continent that was renowned for its succes in bringing Seleya closer together. That organization has long since dissapated and none have returned. But now, continuing previous work brought upon by Saridan, the Tukarali Foreign Ministry has announced that a new regional organization is to be born. The Seleyan Customs Union will be a customs union between participating members in which member states enter a free trade area where they eliminate tarrifs, tradie barriers and import restrictions. Furthermore all member states agree to a common external tarrif, creating one large trade bloc. The proposed SCU will likely at first consist of Likatonia, Tukarali and Kanjor, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated his intention of getting more nations on board, hoping to "attract other Seleyan Nations to the benefit of such a customs union in increasing trade output, strengthening regional relationships and stabilizing our foreign policy. Furthermore this organization has no political elements whatsoever, allowing member states to keep their sovereignty on a whole range of issues."

The SCU is currently being formalized, with it likely leaving all power with member states with the only body to be the Regulatory Board, meant to ensure all member states keep to the provisions of the agreement.

Porto dos Santos: Using the funds freed up in its own financial stimulus plan the government has announced a investment of 2 billion into the national airline, TUKAIR, meant to help the airline update and expand its fleet as well as offer more regional connections. Currently TUKAIR is a rather small airline, offering passenger flights to Aldegar, Saridan, Baltusia and Kanjor. With the 2 billion investment the government hopes to expand that to include lines to Mordusia, Rildanor, Valruzia and Kalistan. Besides passenger flights the investment is also meant for the airline to launch its own freighter division, allowing it to also get into the transport of goods. The government has asked TUKAIR to aquire at least 5 capable freighter aircraft over the coming years and start the logistical challenge of having its own freight department. The government of now Prime Minister Ramos has stated that it sees TUKAIR as a opportunity to help the rest of the economy, by having a strong airline you create more economic links between nations according to the PM which in turn leads to more economic opportunity. This investment into the airline however also comes with other requirements. With the government having to invest heavily into the renovation and expansion of the Porto dos Santos airport, which currently is just considered a local airport. The international airport of the formal capital of Sangon has more capacity, but will not be able to or want to house the capacity needed to carry such a big new national airline. Minister of Infrastructure Benjamim Venâncio has stated that his ministry is already drawing up plans for the renovation and expansion of the Porto dos Santos airport but that it will take at least 4 more years till these plans are formalized and with a still recovering economy the resources needed for such a project will likely have to be accumalated over the years before being able to be used.

Roessenfoetrel - The centre-right still has strength

Sangon: The current president of Tukarali, Bernardo Roessenfoetrel (ACL, former Conservative Party), announced that João Alves will be the ACL's choice to run for president in 5188, and also reinforced that the country's center-right still has strength.

In 5184, Fox, Carvalho and I were undecided and disappointed with the results of the 5177 elections. We could already say that the center-right had no more allies to run in the elections, but Bertrand convened the ACL primaries in 5183. The ACL still was recovering from the other elections. Dom João, Jack and I were in the ACL primaries, but I ended up winning with the majority of votes, and I don't regret having run. We won the 5184 elections, but we didn't win the majority. But Tukarali's centre-right still has strength.

João Alves is already known for being one of the main leaders of the ACL in the Assembly of the Republic, and also leader of the minority in the legislature. Alves defends monarchism, as does Roessenfoetrel, but he has already said that "maybe he will change his choice", referring to the fact that the PL disapproved of the monarchist manifesto.

RIO DE ABRIL: After 5192 elections, Tukarali entered an era of uncertainty, as PL kept itself as government, however as minority one. But, despite SPE entering parliament as first left-wing force since long period, most activists and journalists saw no real left opposition in it, and craved for better and stronger opposition. That's where Juntos entered the scene.

For two decades, Tukarali faced political fight between liberals, right-wing populists, conservatives, but no real left-wing forces. SDE changed it, entering Assembly after 5192 elections. However, after a year in opposition, it was clear that it wasn't enough. Early January days, SDE local representatives, environmental activists, left-leaning journalists gathered together at what was announced as forum about future of Tukarali. But, as it started, young, yet prominent journalist Ndumiso Lúcia Cerqueira announced this forum a founding congress of what would become Juntos party. Lúcia Cerqueira named "absence of real opposition" the main motivation for this move. Through next few days, congress had developed a manifesto, structure and ideologies. It was clear: Juntos are aiming for the largest opposition party status, if not for senior government member. Juntos, however, named SDT, another left-wing party, as it's main friend on political arena.

With elections 3 years away, there's plenty of time for left opposition to gather and strike together for the win. The big question, however is: will left unite? For decades, there was no united force for the left, left-wing activists were seen as underground, with no way out, and no future. But now, there are three parties, that will clearly divide the vote between themselves, and considering the founding nature of SDT and J, it's not clear, whether these two will work with SDE. Yet, everyone still have 3 years to think, and develop strategy. We will follow the situation, and update you with new analyses. Stay tuned.

A Voz Do Povo, Tukarali's New Magazine Takes The Country By Storm!
Eva Ramires
Tukarali has a new left-wing magazine that is taking the country by storm. Editorialised by some of the best journalists in São Miguel and with correspondents from all over Tukarali, A Voz Do Povo will cover politics, culture, and current events every week. Critics have received the new publication with enthusiasm and expect it to present a fresh take on an otherwise liberal- and conservative-dominated media.

The Left Is Back: A Look Into Tukarali's New Political Forces
Paulinho Cabral
After years of austerity, conservatism, and liberal-dominated politics, Tukarali sees the dawn of its own pink wave with the arrival of three new left-wing parties. Saída Pela Esquerda (SPE), Juntos, and the Socialistas Democráticos de Tukarali are the latest left-leaning parties to join the Assembly of the Republic and their participation in the 5192-5196 legislature is deemed by political scientists as an important step towards the consolidation of democracy and civil liberties in Tukarali. "It is a refreshing new event considering the several years of right-wing rulership that our people has faced in the last ten years," says Martha Medeiros, SPE President and Member of the Assembly. For her and her compatriots at the SPE, a new era of progressive politics has dawned on Tukarali and we can only hope to see what will come out of these parties' agendas.

SPE and Republicanos Join Forces In Supermajority Goverment
Tácito Albuquerque
In an unexpected move after months of inconclusive negotiations between the Partido Liberal (PL) and the Republicanos (REP), an agreement between the now-largest party in the Assembly and the newcomer Saída Pela Esquerda! has been reached to form a centre to centre-left coalition for government. Following extensive negotiations between Republicanos spokesmen Jack Gaines-Fox and SPE President Martha Medeiros, the REP representatives presented the cabinet proposal to the Assembleia da República on December 5193. In this new arrangement, Mr. Matheus Carvalho will take over the role of Prime-Minister until 5196. Political commentator Dinis Serra from the Federal University of Borusca says that the coalition, which will have a supermajority of 510 seats, will test the progressiveness of the SPE and might moderate the political discourse of some Republicanos representatives. In the few months after the new cabinet took office, new laws have been readily approved by both parties leaving a net positive of more social benefits and less regulation to the nation.

30 January 5196
O REPUBLICANO - TukPoll makes the last poll until the elections.
The poll is the third carried out by TukPoll, an institute founded in January 5196.
Image

Rio de Abril: The newly founded polling institute TukPoll today released the last presidential poll before the 5196 election begins. The institute published three polls today, two presidential and one parliamentary. In the simulation of the first round, Martha Medeiros of the SPE, supported by the Republicans, leads the intentions of valid votes with 40%, while the PL candidate João Saraiva is isolated in second with 32%. The other candidates scored less than 30% of the voting intentions.
In the simulation of the second round called today, Medeiros also leads with 52% of voting intentions, against 48% for João Saraiva. The margin of error for the two simulations is 2 p.p., and the confidence level is 96%. The institute interviewed more than 3,000 citizens from all districts of Tukarali.

RIO DE ABRIL: Months of campaign finally ended, as Tukarese Electoral Commision counts final votes of the 5196 election, that elected 7th Assembly. Yet another shakedown election, resulting in success of two newcomers: J and SDT. Both are members of newly-founded political federation "Tukarali of Hope", and both parties along with SPE (also member of federation) and REP are projected to become new government.

Since 5194, Tukarali has been governed by centre-left coalition government of REP-SPE, that reformed many structures and institutions in country. 5196 election was projected to be a popular vote of confidence towards their reformism and ideology. However, as country been shaping due to coalition decisions, political life wasn't stagnant. Two newly founded parties: SDT (democratic socalists) and J (eco-socalists), have been platforming on even more reformists and left-wing government. As elections came closer and closer, left-wing parties decided to unite, in what would become political federation of parties called "Tukarali of Hope". Parties agreed on supporting united left-wing candidate on presidential elections. Soon, Republicans joined their initiative, and also endorsed SPE candidate Martha Medeiros, who also led SPE list on parliamentary elections.

And, as soon as polls have closed, every media outlet projected Medeiros landslide win in first round, winning around 70% of the vote, therefore becoming first female to hold the office since 5021. Yet, while presidential candidate headquarters were feeling euphoria, parliamentary headquarters faced suprises and challenges: media projecting TdE of falling 32 short of majority government, with Republicans once again finishing first as largest party. As TdE was dissapointed of falling short of majority, it was clear that there still will be left-wing government. Prior to elections, federation did not rule out coalition government with REP, which seemed to leaning more to the left as former conservative membership left politics, or joined PL.

Republicans leader in his victory speech told that his party already working with federation, and announced that his party will be joining federation. Now, it was clear, Tukarali will face yet another left-wing government, that occupies 2/3 of mandates in Assembly of the Republic. Left-wing politicians seem to have honeymoon for the last 4 and probably next 4 years, but will leftist honeymoon last forever? We will know in another 4 years.

We will follow the situation, and update you with new analyses. Stay tuned.

O Proletário
By Joaquim Xolani

In an effort to attract more members to its youth wing, the SDT is financing the editorialization of a new monthly publication, O Proletário. Aimed at teenagers and young adults, the magazine will cover politics, including the inner workings of the party, art, history, and events from around the world.

The Tukarese Pendulum
By Guilherme Sato

After the recent resurgence of the left and its electoral success through allyship, which is the driving force of the Tukarali of Hope Federation, one may wonder, could the right ever face such a renaissance?
It seems that the right-wing thinks so, as demonstrated by the birth of the National Civic Alliance, comprised of the Democratic Will, a Hosian democratic centre-right party, and the National Republican Party, a nationalist reactionary.
While they still are extra-parliamentary organizations, we have to remember that's how both the Juntos and SDT started, both are currently a part of the government through their alliance with the Republicanos and the SPE.

Unrest in the SDT
By Tomás Henrique

Virgílio Xolani enraged the more radical section of his party this month by declaring full support for the Tax Reform of 5196. Amidst its taxation of corporations and luxury goods, it also established a new tax for essential goods.
"I do not wish to see me people starve", said Virgílio in a press conference, "That is why I support our honorable president's proposal, if we do not fix our debt, the future generations, your children, will suffer!".
Regardless of Xolani's words, a faction brews in the SDT, one that wishes to see to Virgílio's retirement. In the case of Xolani stepping away, it's unclear who would succeed him as president of the SDT, despite his vocal support for Silvester Fiorino, the current Minister of Education and Culture is also currently seen as an "untrustworthy capitalist ally" by the far-left faction of the party, which is growing in numbers.

What is Fiorino planning?
By Gilberto Soares

Since he has been appointed as minister due to SDT's affiliation with the Tukarali of Hope Federation, Silvester Fiorino has been weirdly quiet. But, recently, he has announced that a bill is being written by the party, its subject matter: Regulation of private schools and homeschooling.
While we will have to wait to see what this new law say on private education, it's reasonable to assume that Fiorino plans to ban homeschooling, as he has been vocal about his opinion on the practice. According to him, "The legal status of homeschooling represents society's failure to safeguard our children's right to meaningful education, an adult raised in homeschooling will be an intolerant individual and a threat to our democracy, we must avoid the creation of environments that perpetuate a single world-view and encourage ignorance".

1st PRN Congress - Serra to deradicalize the PRN

In historically first Congress of Partido Republicano Nacional various representatives of factions and blocs in the party have assembled to discuss the future if the party. Due to the party's rather small number of members, the Congress was attended by only 30 representatives. In his speech to the congress Líder do Partido Marco Serra has announced plans to steer the party to more moderate waters, replacing reactionarism with conservatism, to appeal to Tukarali moderate conservatives. In subsequent vote Serra has retained leadership for another 2 years with 19 representatives supporting Serra and 11 opposing him.
