Aldegar Canal receives domestic and foreign attraction
September, 4484

Aldegaria - An announcement by the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President has confirmed that several dozen foreign and domestic companies have taken up contracts for updating the Aldegarian Canal. Notably the Istalian company Anzanti S.p.A. would be taking up a large contract for updates and expansion for the Aldegarian Canal; one of the most integral components of the Aldegarian economy. Information related to the precise details of the plan have not been shared but it expected that the contract would be worth several hundred million LOD, potentially reaching a billion LOD. The Office of President however noted that nearly 60% of the labor hired would be Aldegarian in place of hiring foreign workers and Anzanti project managers would be used to train and work side-by-side with Aldegarian project managers, providing real world experience to the fledgling new Aldegarian economy.

The security of the canal will be personally undertaken by the Commander of the Imperial Guard Lt. Gen. Majid Bagherzadeh, the loyal guard of the Shah. Shah Shahrokh II has also planned several visits to the site, including one with the top Yazdist priest as a show of "...unity between the Shah and the religious elements of Aldegar. We are united and stand firm in the commitment to rebuild Aldegar into a significant regional and global power, providing for our citizens and citizens of the world."

Religious protesters take over Kasād City Council building
February, 4487

Kasād, Polran Province - Elements of the Aldegarian Armed Forces 117th Mechanized Brigade entered into Kasād earlier this morning as religious protesters, backed by rogue elements of Basij militia took over the local city council building. Protests had been growing due to unhappiness with the local Mayor who local priests have felt was not adhering firmly to Yazdist beliefs and they believe he had committed crimes against the religious institutions in the area. Lt. Colonel Gulşen Mirzan spoke with the Aldegar Daily reporters outside in an exclusive interview in which he noted that the operation to reclaim the city council building was successful and the application of force had been applied to rogue elements of the Basij militia. The Basij militia who had turned against the Shah were arrested by members of the Imperial Guard Corps and transported to a local Imperial Guard Corps base; information regarding their status or charges are unknown.

This type of violence has become commonplace among the extremist religious population who believe that the religion should be the centerpiece of the state, some believe in place of the Shah. The Shah's household released a comment on the matter earlier today and criticized the actions of the "...rogue religious fanatics that will undermine the success of the state and damage the good deeds, good thoughts and good words that the Yazdist religion deems the way to life a spiritual life."

President Hashempour Ousted by Shah
February 4488

President Nozar Hashempour was removed from power by Shah Shahrokh II due to the President's inability to stem religious fanaticism exhibited by Yazdist extremists. Last year, in 4487, a Yazdist militia attempted to occupy Kasād City in the southern Polran province. The militia managed to temporarily occupy the city council buildings but were quickly repelled by the military. Since then Pro-Shan factions and Pro-Magi (Yazdi priestly caste) factions have rioted, protested, and fought each other in Aldegarian streets. Hashempour's attempts to appease both camps seemed promising, but eventually failed to resolve the growing instability in the nation. As a result, Shah Shahrokh II has dissolved the Consultative Assembly and removed Nozar Hashempour from power. The Shah has appointed Nader Nouzari of the new, but popular, Democratic Farmer-Labor Party (DFLP) to the Presidency.

Nouzari Cracks Down on Magi
August 4488

Nouzari moves to forcibly crush Pro-Magi revolt by enacting the "National Security in Response to Religious Fanaticism Act" with approval from both the Shah and the Consultative Assembly. The new legislation would bring direct military involvement into the crisis as the national police have been unable to deal with the religious fanatics. The military has already arrested hundreds of Pro-Magi sympathizers and several of the movements leaders. Minister of Justice Benyamin Najafi said that many of those arrested would likely be tried for treason, a serious charge that could result in execution if they are found guilty. While the new legislation seems to have had the desired effect on the Pro-Magi movement, it has received significant criticism from international observers who say the law can be used to detain others in the name of "national security." Nouzari defended the bill as "necessary to stop the instability Aldegar and bring prosperity back to the nation by removing the cancerous elements of society."

August 4490

President Nader Nouzari has moved to bring the Magi, the priests of the Yazdi state religion, under his government's control. The recent legislation submitted to the Consultative Assembly would place the selection and appointment of Magi directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry would also have the ability to remove Magi deemed to be subversive or anti-government. Startlingly, the legislation creates a new religious office to be the "spiritual leader" of the Yazdi faithful in Aldegar, though whoever is appointed to this position is expected to be sympathetic to the Shah and Mr. Nouzari.

While Nouzari has sought to limit the power of the Yazdi extremists that plagued the country, he has simultaneously courted foreign firms to bring greater investment to Aldegar. Nouzari's administration has announced the resumption of the Aldegar Canal Expansion Project, which stalled due to growing instability from religious extremism and the sacking of President Hashempour. However, Nouzari's reassurances of support to Istalian firm Anzanti has allowed the project to resume. The project is expected to employ thousands of Aldegarians and bring much needed infrastructure upgrades to the canal, which is a major waterway and transit hub.

Aldegar Needs to be Rebuilt According to Nouzari
September 4492

President Nouzari announces his administration's "Rebuild Aldegar" initiative and calls for political and economic reforms. Nouzari has noted longstanding institutional problems as a reason of Aldegar's backwardness in comparison to the international community.

In recent months Nouzari has attacked the Consultative Assembly as an ineffective body and has called for the creation of a stronger legislative body, much the chagrin of the Shah who remains as the ultimate power behind Aldegar's government. The Shah has remained largely opposed to the idea of a new and emboldened legislature as it would erode the Shah's ability to act in the nation. The Shah has hinted at the possibility at replacing Nouzari with a President who holds a more favorable view of the Shah's rule. However, the Aldegarian military, largely impressed by Nouzari's handling of the Yazdist Extremists Riots several years ago and Nouzari's popularity amongst the peasants, has signaled that it would back Nouzari in a potential power struggle between the two most powerful men in Aldegar. President Nouzari, with the military's support, has openly discussed the possibility of drafting a new constitution that would pull Aldegar into the modern era. The military's support for Nouzari has essentially assured that under the new constitution the legislature will a true lawmaking institution rather than the Shah's rubber stamp.

New Constitution Poised to Pass Assembly
April 4495

The Shah's political powers will be significantly diminished if the Constitution that President Nouzari authored passes the Consultative Assembly. As the Assembly is largely composed of Nouzari allies, the Constitutional bill is expected to pass with ease. Under the new Constitution the role of the legislature will be greatly expanded to include many executive powers. The Shah will be relegated to a largely symbolic role with powers to act in emergencies and in a crisis. Nouzari's Democratic Labor Party (DLP) is expected to call early elections once the new Constitution passes, in which Nouzari and the DLP is expected to win a new mandate.

President Nouzari to Step Down
March 4499

Longtime leader Nader Nouzari has announced his intention to retire from public life following the completion of his term as President of the Senate. Nouzari has presided over Aldegar for over a decade and oversaw the imposition of a new Constitution that severely limited the powers of the clergy and monarchy. Nouzari's administration has also focused heavily on building the economy after political turmoil from his predecessors. His administration is responsible for hundreds of miles of new highway construction and other public works projects, as well as greater tax deductions for the working class and the protection of labor rights. Nouzari has endorsed his DLP deputy and the incumbent Vice President of the Senate Karim Taheri. Mr. Taheri faces a considerable challenge for the party's leadership if popular Infrastructure Minister Zarin Khakwani decides to run. However, if Taheri is able to clear his party's internal squabbles he will become the country's next leader, as the DLP is widely expected to win by large margins in the general election in 4500.
