Fourteenth Time Lucky? The Conservative Republic Is Born
6 Xordâd 5149 SS (6 June 4440)

The inauguration of new ceremonial President Ret. Lt. Gen Morteza Ghasemi marked the birth of Aldegar's fourteenth Republic. Republics tend to be greeted with apathy and of course, outright hostility with many often correctly expecting them to have short lives. Some last only a decade, few, half a century and only one the Third Republic - 489 years and not without several interruptions. The 14th one has however been greeted with some curiosity. Driven not by ideological republicanism but rather convenience, the new republic is as the Revolutionary Chronicle described it, a "republic of bankers, generals and the white collar citizens"

Few have expressed any disapproval, indeed the mighty Yazdean Church has been utterly silent on the matter. Perhaps that is because, the faith, like everyone else, considers this a temporary situation as Court Minister Arsaces Moshiri. In any case, none of the reactionary forces can, with a straight face, claim that revolution is in the air. The new President is a former Army Chief of Staff, the Court Minister, a retired Central Banker and the Foreign Minister a long serving diplomat. The Court Minister in a series of interviews and press conferences affirmed the right of property, free worship and association.

Aldegar Hosts Dorvish Deputy State Chancellor

President Ghasemi, Court Minister Moshiri and Foreign Minister Feroz Ostadi Mirza welcomed the delegation led by Dorvish Deputy State Chancellor Wilhelm von Pölzl at the Shah Kurosh International Airport in Aldegaria. Foreign Minister Ostadi said that Aldegar hoped to engage Dorvik on its plans to upgrade its military hardware and work on enhancing trade and cultural ties. While Aldegar has its own defence industry, it is typically focused on the production of small arms, for more advanced things, the country generally finds itself having to import. The country has also been producing more oil and gas in the hopes of averting a recession and well, new customers are always welcome.

Finance Minister: Aldegar Narrowly Dodged Recession

Aldegar's Chief Tax Collector (Minister of Finance) Dr. Keivan Esfandiari has declared Aldegar to have avoided the feared recession which was expected from contagion from the Kalistani economic meltdown. Dr. Esfandiari said that decisive government intervention, foreign investment, particularly of Dorvish origin and a decision by the country's sovereign wealth fund, the National Development Fund to inject 25 billion Crowns into the economy all served to see the nation survive with growth falling to a low of 0.3% in the last quarter of 4440. Growth is now estimated to have recovered to just under 2%. The NDF was founded in 4324 and is now worth a cool 509 billion Crowns. While recent oil surpluses have fallen sharply, the fund has continued growing and its investment record is considered impressive.

Pleasure Island Developent Project Kicks Off

Flamboyant real estate entrepreneur Farshid Tabiri has announced his new mega-investment project the so called 3 billion Crown "Pleasure Island Project" The 5 year project will target the island of Somasi with a large number of real estate developments aimed at servicing the tourist industry. The most notable of the projects is a 1.5 billion Crown mega casino Pleasure Island which Tabiri claims will be the largest in Seleya.

While the Government has speedily approved the project, perhaps too speedily, some Somasian locals have expressed concern. Speaking to the Economic Record, Nouri Etessami the President of Somasi Livable Society said that she appreciated the promised job growth and the projected increase in annual tourist numbers from around 500,000 now to perhaps quadruple that, but called on the Government to prohibit locals from using the casino out of concern for gambling addiction and a probable rise in organised crime.

Aldegar's Vizier of Nature ( Environment &Tourism Minister) Shamseddin Nirumand said the Government took the locals' concern seriously and would seek to address them while "preserving the undeniable benefits of this project" He said he hoped the project would help Aldegar break the 30 million visitors per year threshold and said the Government was considering a number of incentives towards that end.

Reforming the Warriors

Aldegarian Spahbod (Defence Minister) Ret. Mj.Gen Mohsen Foroughi has launched a new 10 year "Warriors" reform program. Foroughi said the 30 billion Crown program would consist of the following reforms

- reduction of the size of the Land Forces from 485,000 to 350,000.
- increased pay and better working conditions for soldiers.
- re-shaping and slimming down of the Defence Ministry bureaucracy.
- updating training programs and weaponry with the help of Dorvish military advisors.
- a greater focus on aerial and naval assets.

The Aldegarians hope that their navy in particular will be ready to take part in join naval exercise with new ally Dorvik. Spahbod Foroughi blamed the country's relatively low military readiness on "leftist governance" and vowed to fund the Warriors adequately with regular guaranteed annual increases.

President Rejects Throne

In the latest blow to monarchists, President Morteza Ghasemi has "absolutely refused" to assume the Peacock Throne. The President refused to cooperate with a faction of backbencher who proposed his elevation to Shah. President Ghasemi said he had been elected to serve as an elected head of state and had no plans or particular claim to the Peacock Throne.

Court Minister Arsaces Moshiri has stayed silent in this particular round of the restoration controversy but many insiders say that the backbenchers were simply his canaries testing out the idea which had gained some popularity due to the popularity of the dignified President. The tabloid Daily Informer claims that the President's wife Sheema drove the decision as she is opposed to his political role and hoped that they would retire to their country home in Polran once her husband's term expires in 4445.

Aldegar Pledges 1bn Crown Reconstruction Package For Dovani
June 28, 4442

Aldegarian Foreign Minster Feroz Ostadi Mirza has promised that Aldegar will deliver reconstruction aid worth 1 billion Crown. The Mirza (Prince) said that his Ministry woul,d through the Department of Eastern Affairs, recruit a number of Aldegarian and local private sector actors to take part in infrastructure repair and "job creation" schemes in a number of devastated Dovani nations. The Mirza said that Aldegar believes that a private-sector driven recovery was the best model for Dovani.

Given its strong reliance on international trade, Aldegar retains a strong interest in the stability of countries situated close to major trade routes. That was a lesson learnt hard during the piracy crisis of 4370-72 which affected the economy considerably and helped bring down the Twelfth Republic.

Unions Call For General Strike In Response to Mass Privatisation
January 7, 4443

The Aldegarian Central Council of Trade Unions has sharply condemned the Government's Privatisation Program. The program is a continuation of the extensive privatisation that has taken place in the past four years although somewhat specially as it "invades" the heavily unionised infrastructural sector. Shapur Araghi, the head of the Central Council has called for a general strike in three weeks and vowed that the workers would "take back the country from the degenerate spawn of privilege and heartlessness" Araghi said he hoped to bring 10 million workers to the streets of Aldegar.

The government has rejected objections to the privatisation plan as "old-fashioned union thuggery" and vowed to tackle the general strike without any concessions. The government also warned the unions not to abuse their freedoms and recall that it represents the population and would not hesitate to resort to harsh measurements to retain public order.

Government Announces Sweeping Reforms

New President Bahmanyār Sīnā wasted no time in implementing his much publicised economic and social reforms. Within hours of taking office the government announced the repeal of anti strike legislation, tax cuts for low income families and the creation of a minimum wage for all Aldegarian workers.
The President also laid the groundwork for closer ties between the government and Yazdi religious groups. In his first television address he announced his intention that the state,
become the spiritual heart of our nation, a structure of collective social enrichment and knowledge which is an expression of Yazdān.

Bahmanyār Atash Behram- Government Announce Construction of Zamānist Fire Temple in Ardeshīr-Khwarrah

The government today unveiled plans for the construction of a new Fire Temple to be build in Ardeshīr-Khwarrah, on the island of Somasi. The Fire Temple will serve the Zamānist community on the island and across Aldegar. A government spokesperson stated,
The size and scale of the project shall reflect both the majesty of Yazdān and the historic need for a major place of worship for Zamānism.

Bahmanyār Atash Behram, or The Fire Temple of Ardeshīr-Khwarrah, will be the only first-grade fire temple within the denomination. The government has allocated a budget of 1 billion ACR for the project, which includes both the cost of construction of the building and significant artistic patronage. The privatisation carried out by the previous government requires that a tendering process be undertaken for construction rights. This shall begin on 1st December 4444.

Critics slammed the "eye watering" cost of the project and questioned the need for the public purse to finance the construction of religious buildings.
It has been rumoured that the facility may function as a centre for religious council to President Bahmanyār Sīnā. The government declined to comment on speculation that the President would have his own chambers at the temple.

Government spending drives economic growth, with sharp falls in consumption and investment
Image

First quarter economic results show that Aldegar's economy grew by 3% from January to March 4445, following increased government spending in education, infrastructure and defence. Falls in consumption and investment however exposed underlying concerns about Aldegar's long term performance.
Treasury officials admitted the fall in consumer spending was disappointing, but pointed to new legislation increasing job security and reducing taxes for low income workers as indicators that consumer confidence will rise towards the end of the year.

Aldegar Takes to the Skies

Transport Minister Abū Bukhara today announced proposals for the launch of a new national carrier, Aldegar Airways, operating from a central base at Pāytakht-e Aldegār International Airport. The airline, which shall receive 500 million ACR in financial backing from the Aldegar government, aims to operate scheduled services to 80 destinations in and out of its hubs and its central location by 4460. The airline aspires to not only increase levels of tourism and foreign investment to Aldegar, but also to improve travel and transport links between Aldegar's regions. The proposal outlines plans to focus initially on domestic flights between the nation's large and medium sized cities.

Asked about the financial costs of setting up the airline, Minster Bukhara said that funds accrued from the mass privatisation undertaken by previous governments meant that the state was in a position to finance specific strategic industries. He confirmed that it should be understood however that the government will not seek to renationalise the energy and water concerns which were sold off in the previous decades.
The minister announced separately that the airline's cargo division, Aldegar Airways Cargo, shall become operational after the launch of passenger services.

Jūzjānī Oil Company Takeovers Cause Problem For Government

The Jūzjānī Oil Company today announced it had agreed successful takeovers of two smaller rival petroleum concerns, making it Aldegar's dominant oil and gas producer. Founder and Chairman Takhmaspâda Jūzjānī hailed the move as both a great boon for consumers and an exceptional opportunity for JOC to develop high quality assets within the company's core operations. He added that the deals would unlock savings of 200m ACR a year in overlapping activities with an immediate production boost of low-cost oil.

Image

Critics have despaired that former nationalised assets have become concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy businesses so soon after privatisation and have demanded that the move be referred to the Competition Commission. An initial case against JOC is unlikely to be successful as Aldegarian law states that monopolies are only forbidden in specific sectors of the economy; oil and gas not amongst them.
Any Appeal would then be lodged with the Minister of Justice, which would be particularly difficult for the Tāza government. Justice Minister Čandar Jūzjānī is the third son of JOC Chairman Takhmaspâda Jūzjānī and anti-corruption activists are demanding that the Minister recuse himself from any judicial oversight of the takeovers.

Image

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice told Aldegar Times Business that,
The Minister has made it clear that he has no financial involvement with JOC and supports current legislation going through the Divan to move the appeals procedure entirely away from the Ministry of Justice and to the High Court. The Minister considers the matter the domain of the Competition Commission and has upmost faith in their decision making process.

Jūzjānī Oil Company has sought to signifficantly raise its profile domestically and internationally over the past 18 months though advertising and sports team sponsorship.
