President Resigns
Court Minister Talebi Steps Up
December 4371
Acting President Talebi
After 10 days of non-stop protests and riots, President Kaveh Kermani has handed in his resignation as head of state. The President who was just four months shy of completing his five year term found himself unable to command the Army to combat the protesters and rioters, deeming it to be "uncivilised." As per the Constitution, the vacancy created by his resignation was filled by his Court Minister Damash Talebi. Talebi, 61 is an experienced ex-civil servant who has served in his post since Kermani's election in 4367. A passionate republican, Talebi was one of the leaders of the 4348 republican revolution and has little stomach for compromise calling rioters "simple thugs and criminals". He has commanded the Army to begin deploying into cities and other strategic installations. The protests continue with reports of clashes between ultra-nationalists and pro-republican counter-protesters. Elections are to held in February with Talebi expected to win easily as Congress remains the country's only real national party.
