Talmorian Crackdown on AslilandJanuary 30, 3428Talmorian military discovers major drug cache in HareshaHAVENO DIAMENTO -- As the Government of Talmoria has tried to push progress and modernization upon the former anarchic state, some regions have continued to operate under their own rules. These tribal regions, the pre-revolution strongholds of backwardness, are mostly rural regions and sparsely populated. And in regards to two of these regions, Mahavan and Soyagar, they are peaceful and don't cause too much trouble. Soyagar in particular is expected to assimilate into Talmorian administration within the next five to ten years. Mahavan may take longer, but there is no imposition to progress coming from there.
There is a third tribal region, Asliland, and peaceful is most definitely not an appropriate adjective for this deepest depth of Terra's third-world. The problematic nature of this region is no surprise to many Tajabad bureaucrats given its shared name with a historical entity of annoyance to Talmorians. Asliland first appeared in 2735, not that long after the arrival of Queranzariah in Talmoria. The Asli, who overwhelmingly embraced the Queranz religion, took up radicalized ideology which drew from tribal Asli customs. This Asliland encompassed all of Talmoria and all who were not Queranzist, or Asli, were expelled from the nation or completely revoked of rights. As this regime neared its twentieth year, it was crushed by Hulstrians who had arrived with the intentions of turning Talmoria into an imperial subject. This was the last instance of Asliland's existence. Since then there have been occasional violent internal conflicts with the Asli. The most notable being the Rebellions of 3272, which saw a number of raids against cities in Binduro and Haresha. This event was also a very dark moment of Talmorian history for in the conclusion of the conflict there was ethnic cleansing carried out by Alberto Lorenzo, the Emperor-Dictator of Talmoria at the time.
Now Talmoria has entered a new era and the Emirati Government continues to work towards modernization. The new Asliland is as problematic as always and, in the words of Prime Minister Sherazi, "is a stain upon the national Talmorian image." Over the past year the government has sought to attract investors and businesses from across Terra to bring money and new economic opportunity to the nation. While this effort has been focused on the coastal 'Developed Quarter,' the problems of the interior lands do undoubtedly cast a shadow. The instability of Asliland scares foreigners away, especially as crime does often trickle out of the region and into other parts of Talmoria.
The biggest business of Asliland is drug-smuggling and human trafficking. And the border with Utembo is especially dangerous as it is the primary trade route of just about every criminal group and gang in Asliland. The centre of all criminal activity is Kajombo City, which is the de facto capital of the region. Asliland does have its own declared government, however its leadership changes each week as rival organizations fight over control. However one united issue for these criminal gangs is Asli secession, something which would allow for a total escape from Talmorian authority and more ease in their dark business.
Kajombo City, 'Terran Capital of Crime & Dirty Business'Up until recently Asliland has not been a top priority for the new Talmorian regime. Much focus has been on modifying national policies and increasing administrative efficiency over the more developed areas of the nation. But now, as the success of national policy-making falls into the hands of civil servants, engineers, and educators, the parliament has found some free time to address the Asli.
Last month, Emir Zayn issued a decree, with the absolute support of Prime Minister Sherazi and the ZNF, to the Defense Ministry ordering the deployment of military to parts of outer Asliland to serve as a police-like force. The military police currently have the primary focus of combating the transportation of any illegal goods out of Asliland and into the "cleaner" regions of Talmoria. Earlier this week, in a patrol in Haresha, a major drug cache was uncovered and it is also reported that a local drug lord was killed by the military. This came as welcome news to Tajabad, which has come to treating the military policing as a way to both give Talmorian soldiers experience and to try to stem the flow of drugs and other illegal goods into Talmoria. It is expected that in time even more national focus will turn towards Asliland and the reassertion of control in southeastern Talmoria.
