Third-World Royal Tour
November 4512

Image
The King surrounded by some courtiers

King Djeli Askia is sent to embark on a 21 day, nine-nation tour of the Third World visiting Kurageri, New Alduria, New Verham, Noumonde, Ntoto, Statrica, Temania, Tropica and Utembo. The tour is meant to enhance trade and diplomatic ties with the Esinsundu majority nations in the East. Earlier this month, Foreign Sekou Konate vowed to open embassies in each of the Esinsundu nations by the end of 4511 and hopes to triple trade with the Third World nations within 25 years. Talmoria already has very strong ties to Utembo, having successfully intervened to prevent escalation of its war with Bianjie. The King will be accompanied by several senior diplomats, businesspeople and cultural ambassadors comprised of some of Talmoria's most renowned artists, including of course, its world famous griots (troubadours)

Talmoria Calls For "Negotiated Settlement" In Temania
February 4520

Talmorian Farin for Foreign Affairs Sekou Konate has called on combatants in the Temanian civil war to lay down arms. The Farin laid down his views in a letter to the Editor of the Temanian Daily News. The letter was sent in from Thikkonagama, Vanakalam where he was attending the funeral of Emperor Satyaketu.

Talmoria condemns the outbreak of violence in Temania. We call for cool heads to prevail and for all sides to work together for the future of the country. Talmoria is heavily invested in the fates of its Esinsundu brothers all over Terra and we have made efforts to organise a conference between the Emperor and his opponents. That is the Esinsundu way of resolving disputes - open discussion not blood spilling.

Talmoria has been closely following developments south of its border, heavily intervening in Utembo where the Kgosi stands challenged by Temanian-inspired protesters. The upheaval threatens to wreck Talmorian plans to knit the entire Esinsundu east into an influential trade and diplomatic bloc and in Talmoria's view, invite outside players to interfere in what it considers to be purely Esinsundu and Eastern affairs.

LIVE, FROM NEUHAUS

OOC Note: Asked the Party of Stars player for permission before posting this.

A young, Indralan reporter stands a few dozen feet in front of what looks to be a line of riot police standing between two rival groups of protesters. The protesters are mostly muted for the moment, but boldly wave teal banners on one side and yellow on the other.

"This is Jade Diallo with the Talmorian Public Broadcasting Network, live in our capital Neuhaus as our coastal nation takes in the results of its latest elections. And as you can see behind me, not everyone is thrilled."

"For several years now, Talmorian voters' confidence in their government has dimished in the wake of several regimes seen as weak by Talmorian voters. But tensions came to a boil two months ago - when the ruling Liberal Party disbanded amid infighting and left the Parliament building empty. Talmorian President Mohan Baldur declared a state of emergency, officially disbanding the Parliament and calling for a new election."

"While elections have produced a government, the results themselves have proven controversial. Turnout in Talmoria was at record lows of 15%, as voters made it clear that their leaders have failed to earn their confidence. And while the newly-formed Alliance of Talmorian Republicans - or ATR - will be able to form a government, it holds a majority of only a single seat. The other seats are held by the nationalist Party of Stars."

"That seat itself is controversial, as well. Outside observers have called attention to a plague of irregularities in the election, most notably widespread intimidation in strongholds of both the ATR and the Party of Stars. Adding to these concerns, Talmorian officials are still recounting votes in the Harisani province. There, a close result handed the ATR its single-seat majority. Party of Stars leaders have vowed that they will not concede the race until the last vote in Harisani is counted."

Behind Jade, the protesters with yellow banners break out in song - the Party of Stars anthem.

"Tensions from the election are on the verge of boiling over tonight, as supporters of both parties here in Neuhaus and across the countries have faced off. While some minor confrontations and injuries have been reported, protests have remained largely peaceful. And behind closed doors, insiders in both parties say that their leaders are in conversations they describe as 'cold, but cordial'."

"But outside of the streets and in their homes, ordinary Talmorians simply hope that the election will stick. And the peace will last."

Black Bloc Wins Stunning Victory in Early Elections
June 4644

NEUHAUS -- Preliminary returns from the recent national election suggest that not only with the populist Black Bloc be the first choice to form the next Government, but that they will be able to do so without any coalition partners. The Bloc received nearly 67% of the vote and will enter the 500-seat Gbara with 328 seats.

The Party traces its roots back centuries in an attempt to oust the then-monarch of Talmoria and establish a Republic, and the resurgence of the party came as a surprise to many political experts in Talmoria.

Party Leader Moniade Richland was registered to stand as the Bloc's candidate for President as the Bloc sought to oust President Mohan Baldur, who had used the powers of the office to centralize control over the country. However, due to unknown reasons, neither Richland nor the candidate for the Alliance of Talmorian Republicans were actually on the final ballots that were circulated nation-wide. The Presidency, which is now a more ceremonial position, was won by Nnena Olinka of the United Boroist Cadre, a left-wing political party. Richland and the Black Bloc have noted that this can only be due to fraud, given that the Boroists were the lowest vote-getters

"This is clear evidence that our grand coalition did the right thing in dramatically reforming the powers of the President," said Richland in a comment. "It seems that Baldur couldn't help but find some way to try to leave one last stain on this country that is in desperate need of renewal. Still, I congratulate President Olinka on the seemingly default victory, even if we will be vigorously investigating how something like this could have happened."

Ethan Akunyili, a young professional from Neuhaus, will step up to lead the Bloc in the Gbara and will serve as the next Great Farin.

"I think this speaks highly to the excitement of the Bloc's voters and members. The last election, turnout was something like 15%. This election has already more than doubled that, with 38% of the population showing up-and the vast majority of them supporting the Bloc. This is nothing short of a mandate to bring a sense of renewal to Talmoria, to invest in our people and to provide for the majority black population which still is suffering after an incomplete transition away from a colonial past. We're happy to work with the other parties, but the people have made their voices clear: they do not want us to shy away from making the changes needed to get this country moving again."

Mr. Akunyili will meet with President Olinka in the coming days to formally submit a proposal to form a cabinet.

ALDERIDGE HANGS ON AFTER TWIN DEFEATS
Alliance Leadership Promises "Bold Opposition" After Successive Caretaker Roles

By Clark Abiodun

===============

"Going forward, we will do better."

The last line of Yuri Alderidge's remarks upon winning leadership of her party for a third term were far from the declaration of victory one might expect from such an event. But they mirrored the mood of her party perfectly. After winning a narrow majority in its inaugural election, the Alliance of Talmorian Republicans has suffered twin blows at the polls. The first came just four years ago, as the party surrendered its majority for a last-place finish against the Black Bloc and the United Boroist Cadre. The second came after an alliance with its rivals, with the ATR failing to prevent the nationalist Black Bloc from securing a large majority. Now ostensibly locked out of even nominal power, the Alliance has found itself in the political wilderness.

At the center of its soul-searching is the Alliance's leader, Yuri Alderidge. The former Mayor of Neuhaus has, since her debut in Talmorian political life, positioned herself as a unifier and has attempted to portray the Alliance as a natural governing party of the country. Under her leadership, the party has focused on establishing itself as mature and respectable over charting out any ideological ground. But the failure of the party to break through after the first Talmorian elections, and its loss to a Black Bloc most Alliance members consider dangerous radicals, has emboldened the more driven segments of the party's base. Unforced errors, such as the caucus failing to show up to vote against the Boroist Cadre's Public Protection Act and the disqualification of the Alliance's Presidential candidate, have only given their words more urgency.

This urgency was conveyed by Markus Weber, the Shadow Justice Minister and perhaps the most pointed critic of Alderidge's leadership. "It is not surprise to me that Talmorians have elected the fringe to power," he said in a televised interview with the Talmorian Public Broadcast Network. "Our nation has been trapped in miasma, and the people want a clear path forward. The nationalists have done so, and our Alliance has failed to do so. I believe we have prized the trappings and dialect of power above doing the peoples' work, and it has let the nationalists blaze a trail. That trail may lead off a cliff, but it is our responsibility to find another one before the fall."

These sentiments culminated in the Alliance caucus' leadership election, where Alderidge was returned to her position as party leader only on the second ballot. Insiders speaking on the condition of anonymity say her victory only came after a deal with Weber, promising a more confrontational opposition. Alderidge's camp refused to comment on such speculation, but sources in the party expect a pitched and pointed speech before the chamber at the swearing in of the next government. One anonymous member of the Gbara seemed to sum up the party's sense of the coming years.

"If the people do not wish for us to lead, then they must wish for us to fight."

UBC Declares Election of President a Mandate to Govern; Mass Purges at Party Congress

By Antoine Umbabe

The elections in Talmoria resulted in mixed messages for the revolutionary socialist party the United Boroist Cadre (UBC). While the party’s candidate for President was elected with 100% of the vote due to technicalities in election laws disqualifying the candidates of two rival parties, the party’s fortunes in the Gbara collapsed. Despite a victorious presidential candidate, the UBC’s vote share in the Gbara plummeted from its 4640 mark of over 25% to the post-Baldur mark of just under 9%. Even with an increase of 400 seats in the Gbara, after electoral reforms, the UBC saw only a 21 seat gain - a huge defeat given the massive increases seen by the ruling Black Bloc and the Alliance of Talmorian Republicans.

This is where the message of the UBC has fallen apart. On the one hand, the party has been elated at the election of President Nnenna Olinka. Olinka, the former President of the University of Mahavan is a respected member of the country’s intelligentsia and, aged 81, not considered to be a political threat after President Baldur was forced from office. When technicalities forced the opposition off of the ballot, her election was essentially unopposed despite claims of fraud from the Black Bloc. Olinka’s election was declared by Dr. Nkiru Ladipo, General Secretary of the UBC, as a mandate for the UBC to lead the country. This, of course, ignores the Boroist proposal that created the ceremonial Presidency that now exists in Talmoria.

Image
General Secretary of the UBC, Dr. Nkiru Ladipo

A different side of Dr. Ladipo was seen at the emergency party congress declared after the drubbing the party took in the special elections. The General Secretary, resplendent in a white hijab, harangued party members for the loss in the Gbara and declared that the party had been infiltrated by “gangsters” masquerading as revolutionaries. Ladipo’s floor managers at the party congress circulated motions to expel members deemed to be counter revolutionary or insufficiently loyal to the ideology of Olufemi Boro. As floor fights erupted and security forced the expelled members from the floor, Dr. Ladipo dabbed tears away from her eyes.

Political analysts, however, don’t put much stock into Dr. Ladipo’s conspiratorial accusations of infiltration and sabotage and point to a more mundane concern. The political insurgency that Ladipo built up around her academic research interest, former Great Farin Olufemi Boro, was made up almost entirely of student revolutionaries. The lack of experience and intersectionality with the rest of the left in Talmoria left the party from the outside looking in. Time will tell if the UBC can regain some of their power in the opposition.

Restoration of the Asli Sultanate

Neuhaus - Standing on the steps of the Legislative Assembly His Majesty Rabat III held up the approved new Constitution of the Asli Sultanate which saw him enshrined as the Sultan of Asli and Emir of Talmoria. The constitution grants the country a constitutional monarchy and potentially a new government that can provide stability to the failed state. Standing around him were prominent members of the Sultan's Movement, the sole registered political party within the country and the largest within the Legislative Assembly, now known as Parliament due to the influences from Luthorian explorers and former colonial politics which saw a competition between Hulstrian and Luthorian settlers across the country, with the Hulstrian's largely remaining. The new Parliament of the Sultanate passed a number of pieces of legislation in which the new government was termed as the "Council of Ministers" and the new head of government was coined as the Chief Minister; the position will be filled by constitutional lawyer and close ally of the Sultan, Farxaan Shankaron an ethnic Talmorian. The Sultan's Movement is largely backed by wealth Dovani Majatran financiers who have residences in both Talmoria and Mina, the country formerly known as Ciftuingan, the backers Saadiq al-Rahimi, Maajid el-Hatem, Azhaar al-Kamali are all included within the new government and are expected to play a large role in opening up the country to both foreign investment and domestic operations. Watembo Talmorian Abdu Mshindi was named as the countrys Foreign Minister and Secretary-General of the Sultan's Movement, he previously served as the Ambassador to Mina and has a long history with the incoming Sultan.

In his first address to the nation the Sultan stated that the first goal of his new government was the security of the people and that the new Minister of the Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Saadiq al-Rahimi would be carrying out a massive overhaul of the Talmorian Defense Force (TDF) and seeking to secure funding and operational support from allies within the region. Over the years the various iterations of the Talmorian Defense Forces have been corrupt and ineffective according to the Sultan and he seeks to immediately change the "direction" of the armed forces as a whole. Despite the promises of peace and security the Sultan was whisked away by his bodyguards into a limousine after automatic gunfire could be heard and the ceremony was interrupted as police and soldiers scattered the crowd.

First operational budget passed
February, 4751

Neuhaus - The Ministry of Finance in accordance with the will of His Majesty the Sultan and ascent from the Parliament of Talmoria has approved the first operational budget in several decades. Minister of Finance Daahir Shaaciye announced the new budget after several days of debates on the floor of the Parliament, notably over desires to market Talmoria as an upcoming developing market. Speaker of the Parliament Okpara Nnamdi, an ethnic Keobi, one of the many minorities within Talmoria stated that the budget is an impressive feat for the new Talmorian government and that the eyes of the world are upon the Talmorian government to secure a future for its citizens. At a press conference attended to by the Chief Minister and the Minister of Finance, the Finance Minister went over the new operational budget. According to the budget, the total government spending in Talmoria will top a little over 2b LOD and will be divided through several key areas. The first of the key areas will be enhancing the collection capabilities of the Ministry of Finance which is responsible for taxation throughout Talmoria the operational budget of the Talmorian Ministry of Finance will be roughly 100m LOD. Finance Minister Shaaciye stated that within a year, if security and domestic situations continue, the Talmorian government will be able to bring its tax collection rate up from 3% to 15% which will potentially yield an addition 500m LOD for government spending. The Chief Minister chimed in with the note that the Sultan's Movement as well as His Majesty wishes to see 50% revenue and tax collection within the next several years and the Ministry of Finance will do its best to ensure that happens.

The second largest area will be defense and security totaling 500m LOD with 200m LOD for the Ministry of the Interior and 300m LOD for the Ministry of the Defense Forces and the Talmorian Defense Forces as a whole. Representatives from the Ministry of the Defense Forces spoke briefly and stated that they are seeking regional allies to assist in rebuilding and training the current abysmal state of the armed forces as a whole. The Interior Ministry will seek to build a national police force and focus on training and anti-corruption measures throughout the country, notably within the nations local governments. The third key area will be rebuilding the failing health system within Talmoria that has seen parts of the country plagued with malaria and other diseases, the Ministry of Health and Social Services will also tackle food security which has been a consistent issue across the globe but especially in Talmoria. The 300m LOD will also be joined by 200m LOD to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture which will assist in the development of food security and subsidiaries to farmers throughout the country.

The final area of notable investment will be into the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the ministry has a wide variety of duties and policies assigned to it but it largely responsible for the management of the nations vast mineral resources. Talmoria has a large reserve of untapped natural resources, according to some the largest on the continent and one of the largest in the world. Talmoria is also potentially home to uranium veins, which could potentially allow the Talmorian government a bargaining chip when it comes to the table.

Foreign Ministry seeks to grow economic and regional cooperation
April, 4751

Neuhaus - Talmorian Foreign Minister Abdu Mshindi has announced that the government of Talmoria is openly shopping for allies in the re-development of its nation. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the government in Neuhaus, with the approval of the Sultan, has called for investment into the nation to re-develop its future. The program, known as "Talmoria 4765" is a joint development program started by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, Finance and the Central Bank of Talmoria in an attempt to drive foreign investment into the country. While it has only been 3 months since the Asli Sultanate has been restored, the government in Neuhaus has hit the ground running with the support of the Sultan and a significant portion of the nation supporting their efforts. Despite the forward progress the nation is still held back by political, religious and ethnic violence that has seen a sharp uptick as the Talmorian Defense Forces have been put into overdrive to attempt to secure large portions of the country. The possibility that the underfunded, undermanned and under equipped Talmorian Defense Forces can possibly save the nation is fanciful. While the Talmorian government passed one of its first operational budgets and the Ministry of Finance seeks to increase tax collection throughout the country, it remains to be seen if it is at all possible. The bulk of TDF operations have focused around securing the capital of Neuhaus and its surrounding areas, the desire to make Neuhaus a "green zone" free or at least as free as possible from violence to attract foreign investors and tourist remains the primary goal of the TDF and the Ministry of the Defense Forces.

Despite the negatives, the Talmorian Foreign Minister painted a picture of Talmoria that many Talmorians have not seen in centuries. Talmoria 4765 focuses on the development of the largely untapped natural resources within the country and sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Talmorian government has sought to bolster support from both Lourenne and Yingdala in the near future. Lourenne, the the nations north only interrupted by Statrica, remains a significant regional power and is one of the few nations that has long held significant sway in the southern portion of Dovani. Yingdala, the metaphorical new kid on the block has a lot to prove and building regional allies could be the first major step back to regional power status.
