Social Democrats are reborn with support from a number of major trade unions

Following the third in a series of major conferences between the Confederation's largest unions, an agreement has been reached which will see the reformation of the Social Democratic Party. Led by former union official Gabriella Stolojan, the party will be contesting the next set of presidential and legislative elections which are currently scheduled to be held in two years time. However, Stolojan has already submitted a motion, sponsored by the United Worker's Front (UWF), to hold early elections as soon as possible. When speaking to journalists and union members, she was optimistic about the chances of the returning political giant and claimed she "wants to form a government within the next three years".

The latest announcement follows almost a year of discussions between various trade unions, led by the Kizenian Labour Front, United Workers Union and General Transport Union, on the matter of representing workers politically. Union leaders, including Stolojan and her newly-appointed Head of Strategy Vlad Gilca, had lambasted the lack of genuine worker representation in political life for several years but were only recently able to coordinate a strategy to combat the issue. Though the left-wing UWF purports to represent working people, they have been criticised for extremism by many and have failed to have a meaningful impact on the lives of most citizens.

Initially, it was expected that an entirely new political machine would be created and built from the ground up but conflict over the specifics of its structure were threatening to bring the discussions to an abrupt end. Nonetheless, a change of course was signalled with the arrival of Georgina Argetoianu in the final days. Argetoianu, an historian, is the individual charged with managing the legacy of the Social Democratic Party, which had success under the leadership of Nic Stefan and Gogu Sollomovici during 'the great turbulence' in New Endralonian/Kizenian politics. She negotiated a transfer of the relevant documents and branding to allow the unions to re-establish the Social Democrats.

Gilca, who holds the incredibly influential head of strategy position, has spoken at length on what voters should expect from the resurrected party. "Institution of real change for the good of the nation, based on democracy, freedom, compassion and compromise" were his words though he refused to provide an answer when queried on which existing political party the SDP would be courting the favour of. In this department they have a certain history, working alongside a diverse plethora of different parties during their initial tenure in government. While this allowed them to keep hold of power, they were also criticised for their flexibility.

Widow's Fury Over Gambling Regulations
Advocacy groups call on government for more restrictions following string of suicides

The Gambling Care Society is calling on political parties of all ideologies to institute new restrictions on betting and gambling in the Confederation. The campaign comes after a series of high-profile cases in which individuals have taken their own lives as a result of gargantuan levels of debt they have built up due to gambling addiction. In the most recent, Bodgan Fidatov managed to accumulate over 350,000 NED of debt during a single session in his local bookmakers. Fidatov's widow Tatiana has spoken out publicly and called the governments "spineless cowards" for failing to address the problem.

Currently, the Confederation has no regulation whatsoever on gambling and betting. This means that addicts are able to walk into bookmakers or casinos and spend thousands of dollars on fruit machines, roulette wheels and more with no consequence at all. The Gambling Care Society says this needs to change. Patrik Miksa, a spokesman for the charity and advocacy group, told the Times and the Star that "the current situation is infuriating because despite the knowledge that the lack of regulation is causing serious harm to citizens, the government remains inactive on account of their 'liberal' principles". On their website, the group outlines a serious of elementary provisions which would provide support for gambling addicts and prevent them from making their situation even worse.

Meanwhile, some have taken the matter into their own hands. In the small village of Borcani, residents have made their frustration clear by targeting the source of the problem. Over the past month, the local betting shop has been the victim of vandalism on over a dozen occasions: incidents ranging from graffiti on shop windows to bricks being thrown through the door. While refusing to condone the violence, the village's local mayor said he "understood the local's anger following the tragic death of one of our own treasured citizens". An independent, he has supported the legislation by the Social Democrats which would impose regulations on the industry.

The Confederation bans travel from and to Ostland

Ostland, the home of the Wolfsheim Bacterial infection,
is in big trouble because of the disease. Now, New Endralon has banned travel from and to Ostland, in an attempt to keep the disease in the third world. Other than the banning of travel to Ostland, New Endralon heavily restricts all travel from and to countries which have had more that 200 infections. Citinzens stranded in Ostland or another country are picked up by a military transport plane before going into quarentine for atleast 3 weeks.

Cancon starts researching Wolfsheim Disease

Cancon, a medical corporation located in the Confederation, has started researching the Wolfsheim Disease in an attempt to find a cure or vaccine. Cancon has stated:"This is what we do, trying to find things to save the lives of others. But be aware, the chances that we actually find a cure are small. This is tge beginning of research and before you can even think about cures we will be years later."

Cancon cooperates with Malivian scientists

Cancon has stated that they are willing to cooperate with the Malivian scientists on the condition that Cancon, as a company, may still strife to gain a reasonable profit. Cancon and Malivian scientists will cooperate during the research of the bacteria and later, hopefully, during the research for a cure or vaccins.

Gambling Regulation Top of Social Democratic Agenda
Newly elected President promises urgent action as public protest reach new levels across the country

Newly elected President of the Confederation Gabriella Stolojan told supporters that regulating the gambling industry would be the most important matter for the coming legislative and executive terms, as the Social Democrats prepared to form a government for the first time in over a century and a half. In the most recent elections, they beat the incumbent Alliance of Liberals as well as the opposition United Worker's Front, though they remain four seats short of a majority and will require the support of one of their rivals if they are to successfully pass legislation and appoint a cabinet. Stolojan has assured citizens that coalition-building will be a quick process and has stated the Worker's Front as her preferred partner in government.

In the meantime, the public outrage over government and industry inaction on the gambling matter has reached breaking point. Several cities have been the scene of so-called vigilante groups destroying casinos and betting shops. Carrying sledgehammers and claiming to be avenging those who have seen their lives destroyed by gambling addiction, these groups often target the electronic slot machines which are known to be particularly common as a source of addiction. The Szekeres Slots Company, who own a number of these machines in the Confederation, claim they have suffered nearly a million dollars worth of criminal damage since this time last year.

On other matters, the Social Democrats have not been so clear on their proposed policy. Though their manifesto contained a number of fairly moderate liberal and pro-worker reforms, it was deliberately lacking in detail to allow compromise in the case of a split legislative election result. Sources close to the new President say she will be focusing personally on expanding the Confederation's foreign policy to improve its connection with former allies and new emerging powers. In order to support this initiative, Laurensiu Balitiu is expected to be handed the foreign affairs brief, owing to his close personal relationship with Stolojan.

Cancon concludes first research of the Wolfsheim Disease
Finding a cure "extremely difficult"


Cetatea Albâ - Cancon has finished the first part of the research together with Malivian researchers. One of the conclusions is that the researchers face an extremely hard task developing a cure. The bacteria has a very short lifespan but reproduces extremely fast, allowing it to evolve very fast. That is also the reason why the disease gained resistance against antibiotics very fast. This makes developing a cure extremely difficult. Cancon makes a strange request to the doctors treating the infected people in the third world. "Please do not treat the infected with any medicines, the chances are that you make the bacteria resistant to an ingrediënt in it and ruin a chance for a cure."

5th Strike Group send to east coast of Ostland


Cetatea Albâ - The parliament has voted to send the 5th Strike Group to the east coast of Ostland to monitor the situation there. The 5th, which currentely resides in Hanzen still monitoring the Dalibor crisis. The full motion is here.

Cancon finds treatement for Wolfsheim Disease


Cancon has found after years of research a treatement against the Wolfsheim Disease. While it does not cure the patients it heals the lungs, giving the patients a relief and less pain. Furthermore, the treatement can extend the lives of the patients 4 months. This treatment gives a startingpoint for the researchers to keep developing this treatement and maybe it will once develope into a good working cure. The treatement consists out of 3 pill everyday and twice a day a treatement from an inhalor.

A thing Cancon found out is that people are earlier infected than previousely thought. Instead of killing the patient in a month, the bacteria is in the body for more than 6 months before it becomes deadly.
