High Chancellor Makes Speech Regarding King of Lourenne's Statement
The High Chancellor making a speech regarding the King of Lourenne's statement against his amendments to the Penal Code.
The High Chancellor made a speech earlier today responding to the remarks made by the King of Lourenne against the amendments made to the New Endralonian Penal Code which reintroduced the death penalty for all capital crimes including drug crimes, and reintroduced judicial corporal punishment. The King of Lourenne, Landy I, condemned the High Chancellor for apparent "ridiculous" punishment that they called the death penalty, and indicated that "nobody should ever have to lose their life or be physically harmed as a punishment, regardless of their crime", and made other ludicrous remarks that apparently seeks to encourage action against New Endralon, our great homeland, for simply doing what is needed to suit the changing situation at home. The High Chancellor dismissed the remarks made by the King as mere "hot air and babble", in a press conference held in his official residence that saw international media being present as well. The High Chancellor said that the King was "entitled to his opinions, but [he] should not interfere in the internal affairs of New Endralon, and should respect the right of the democratically elected government to fulfil its duty to safeguard the people of New Endralon from crimes and criminals", and he also stated that the death penalty, along with judicial corporal punishment, was "a deterrent and warning", and that the move was necessary seeing that New Endralon has seen a 18% increase in crimes from the start to the end of the previous New Society Party administration. The High Chancellor also corrected the notion that he was laughing when he was signing the bill, stating that "[him and the President] were smiling because [the signing] accomplished a plank of [the National Union's] most recent manifesto, and [the bill] will help reduce crime in New Endralon in the long-term". He also stressed that rehabilitation programmes remained a key part of the prison system, and that most recently, work-based rehabilitation has been rolled out to equip prisoners with practical skills to allow them to better reintegrate when they exit the prison system. Since the passage of the bill, 2 death sentences have been given to the murderer of a greengrocer and a well-known drug trafficking cartel leader, while judges are hearing another 45 cases which may involve the death penalty. There have been no cases with judicial corporal punishment given as a sentence thus far, though 102 cases that may involve it are ongoing.
