National-Monarchist Alliance Victory
June 4560

After decades of endless hand-wringing, Jelbek nationalists and monarchists have united behind one banner to tackle the "liberal and weak republic" and have won a landslide victory in legislative elections. The nationalist movement rose out of the remnants of the 4530s War of Resistance where the Jelbeks threw out all foreign occupiers. Since then the national government has remained very weak with limited authority over the steppe. Monarchists on the other hand have remained holding a torch for the various monarchies which were abolished in the past half century, most notably the Northern Khaganate and the Southern Khanate.

The union is largely the work of Jlekai Azisrmko Vrn a western aristocrat and longtime nationalist activist who was among the military leaders of the War of Resistance. Vrn persuaded both monarchists and nationalists that only an executive monarchy with a responsible ministry could maintain the gains of the War, minimise foreign influence and definitively end nearly two centuries of chaos. After this, the Sons of the Purple Wolf party was formed and captured the national mood of weariness with endless instability and nostalgia for the last days of the national monarchy, particularly the reign of the enlightened Manil Khagan. Vrn is set to become the new Wrntusrljikai (Premier) and has vowed to call a Great Kurultai to elect a new monarch and ratify a new Constitution for the nation.

Great Kurultai Elects New Monarch, Approves Constitution
July 4561

An assembly of representatives from all clans, cities and other polities has been successfully concluded one month after assembling in the central Jelbanian city of Frtoékrmjko. The assembly, known as a Great Kurultai involved more than 500 delegates from across the country with Wrntusrljikai (Forward-Souled Person/Premier) Vrn presiding. Its main task - a new constitution was achieved after considerable debate over the provisions, particularly the powers of the monarchy and executive vis a vis those of the legislature.

There was less disagreement on the nomination of the monarch, most agreed that the northern claimant, Bek Manil Wrntukaisrmko Suadjakai, a 23 year old descendant of the last Suadjakai Khagans was the best candidate. This was boosted after he pledged to marry one of the daughters of the powerful southern House of Katona (formerly rulers of the "Southern Khanate" - a Deltarian puppet state) as his chief consort He was elected Khagan and offered the throne which he accepted after the two customary refusals. His first task was re-appointing the Premier and asking him to form a new government - a largely ceremonial step which resulted in no changes to the ministry.

The nationalists led by the Jelbek premier Jlekai Azisrmko Vrn wanted an absolute monarchy with a very weak Kurultai (legislature) Many clans and cities rejected this and eventually a compromise was reached with a powerful monarchy balanced by a ministry jointly responsible to the Khagan and the legislature. It was implied that the powers of the monarchy would be generally exercised by the ministry although the Khagan would wield significant reserve powers. The Great Kurultai also agreed to authorise an income tax while implying that this extraordinary tax could only be levied in emergencies such as war upon the insistence of the great aristocrats and landowners who are historically opposed to it. Many had expected the Great Kurultai to last for several months, the fact that consensus was reached after just under a month shows that the Jelbeks are serious about reforming their former self-destructive habits.

Suadjakai Heir Accepts Throne...With Conditions
May 4662

The Suadjakai royal clan is set to return to the throne for a third time. The move comes after the heir-general of the clan Prince Manil Manilsrmko Suadjakai, the eldest grandson of Manil IV Khagan who was deposed by republicans in 4637, accepted the throne from a delegation of Jelbek notables. In a dramatic scene at his villa in south eastern Vanuku, the Prince demanded "full power" and the several dozen notables lay prostate on the ground for several hours, weeping and begging him to return home and take the throne. Jelbeks are in the midst of a nationalist outrage driven by what they perceive to be violation of their sovereignty by the Deltarian Czardom in recent years.

The need for a strong effective state appears to have finally been accepted by most Jelbeks, particularly those of humble backgrounds. Upon accepting the throne, Prince Mani organised a new political movement, the Young Wolves and "offered" his would-be subjects a fiercely nationalistic and pro-development manifesto which was endorsed in a raucous legislative election where several Young Wolves assisted voters and voted multiple times according to opposition allegations. True or not, the Prince entered a euphoric Baofluz, welcomed by tens of thousands of his compatriots. The newly elected Kurultai has set the new Khagan's installment for February 4663 and in the meantime has appointed him Regent-Atabek and (Wrntusrljikai)Premier of the Khaganate.

Royal Guard Mutiny
Reactionary Blow at Reforms
March 4664

Image
The Mrthotrmojad

Manil V Khagan's rapid reforms have met their first hiccup. It has been reported that several members of the 12,000-strong elite royal bodyguard, the Mrthotrmojad have risen up in revolt against some of his proposed reforms to the body. The Khagan had proposed allowing the appointment of non-noble officers which many members of the notoriously conservative guard have balked at. This in addition with other contentious reforms such as the reintroduction of the income tax and reduction of clan nobility powers have greatly agitated many nobles in the country. The Khagan's press office denounced the rebels as "reactionaries" and vowed a strong response to the crisis.

Mutiny Suppressed
March 4664

The Khagan has suppressed the Mrthotrmojad uprising. After four days of rioting and sacking of part of the Purple Palace, Manil V himself led several regular units from the Great Jelbek Horde backed up by Suadjakai royal clan militia and patriotic volunteers. The army easily defeated the riotious rebels, killing 112 of them while losing just 2 men. More than three hundred members of the Mrthotrmojad have been tried and sentenced to death. Hundreds more were dismissed from the elite royal bodyguard and a more generalised purge is expected not only in the guard but in other pockets of reactionary sentiment such as the palace staff.

Billed by Jelbania watchers as the "last stand of the old order", the failure of the mutiny to convince the Khagan to slow down let alone abandon his reforms. Manil V vowed after the suppression to carry on and even promised land reform - a highly controversial topic in the Khaganate. The vast majority of arable land is owned or perhaps more, controlled by a few dozen clan noble families. Millions of Jelbeks eke out a living as sharecroppers to these often absentee landlords. It is among the poor and the envious lower nobility where the Khagan finds much of his support with the great nobles and the middle class proving more skeptical for varying reasons.

Chronology of recent events

Nov 4690 - Manil V Khagan dies at the age of 73. The monarch's demise without an heir ends the four century long reign of the Suadjakai royal clain.

July 4691- The Kurultai refuses to elect a new monarch. The landowner dominated legislature appoints an Executive Committee to run the country in the defacto Republican "Jelbek Free State. The rejection of the populist achievements of the Suadjakai monarchy is the brainchild of Bek Noh Nohsrmko Vrn, the greatest landowner in the Khaganate and an accomplished scholar.

4725 - The death of Bek Noh Vrn, the defacto leader of the Free State leads to civil strife as his colleagues fail to agree on a successor. The state virtually disintegrates as Kurultai power brokers focus o amassing power in their localities.

4726 - Tokundians begin settling in Rilmos and southern borderlands. Very little coordinated resistance is offered initially .

4729 Bej Vrn's son and heir Bek Nuba Nohsrmko Vrn rallies several clans and forces after issuing the Declaration of Vrnestrap. The Bek leads the militia in a patriotic crusade to clear out the Obrana settlers. He restores the Free State with a difference - a heavily restricted elective monarchy.
