Nathan C. Britt Wins A Narrow Reelection; SDP Wins a Plurality in a Hung Legislature

Nathan C. Britt of the LibCon Party won a reelection for President in a second round. with 51.19% of the vote, winning against Olivia Turnman of the SDP, who had 48.76% of the vote. This is a rather close reelection for a President, no other President winning reelection has won with such a close margin of victory. Britt is also the second President, after late Benjamin Kirkson, to be reelected to a consecutive term, although Britt has already served a nonconsecutive term before the preceding President, Newton L. Baychern.

However, Britt only had 29.65% of the vote in the first round, while Olivia Turnman had 43.43% of the vote. Ernest Jlekai of the RKP was defeated in the first round with 26.92% of the vote. This is the first time since 2903, when the Office of President was created, that there were three major presidential candidates running.

In the House of Representatives, the SDP won a plurality of the seats, with 210 out of 485 seats, which is 43.40% of all seats. This gains is more than expected, since polls indicated that the seats would be more split. The RKP won 129, or 26.60% of seats, while the LibCon Party won 146, or 30.10% of seats. The SDP won a plurality of seats and votes in all Districts except Turadrad, a SDP stronghold in recent years, and Permior, where the LibCon Party won a plurality of seats and votes.

It is unclear what the political future of Jelbania will be, although it is rumored that the SDP and RKP are in talks of forming a coalition. Rumors that there will be another election are also unclear.

RKP Calls for Reform
Following a disappointing outcome in the November elections, Ernest Jlekai and the members of the Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta are calling upon the House of Representatives to changes to the constitution to allow for a new government and a new cabinet to be formed. This news is incredibly interesting given the fact that the constitution currently states that only the Head of State can propose a cabinet. According to Purple Stripe political commentator Arnold Ande, this could only mean one thing.

"The Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta is obviously not allied with the LibCon Party," said Mr. Ande in an interview for this article. "This is incredibly strange because if the LibCon's wished to hold on to power, the RKP would be the most ideologically compatible party to work with in a coalition considering their conservative voting record. This is also a good sign for the Social Democratic Party because they are most poised to become part of the governing coalition."

As for what this means for the future of Jelbanian politics, Ande presented two options.

"The first possibility is that the RKP is basically calling foul because they feel that they are left out of an oncoming grand coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the LibCon Party. While this possibility would be the most politically uniting for the nation, it is incredibly unlikely. The LibCon's and the SDP are polar opposites on almost every issue."

As for the second option?

"What this news means is that it is incredibly likely that the RKP has no forewarned us of a constitutional amendment that will be passed in the House of Representatives with a coalition consisting of the RKP and the SDP. This would be a very centrist coalition, but we cannot be sure what the total implications of this coalition are."

Coalition Deal Struck Says Insider
Image
Ernest Jlekai speaking before reporters. News of a deal between the RKP and SDP was not discussed at this particular conference.
An insider who works for Ernest Jlekai but has wished to remain anonymous to the fact that no official announcement has yet been made has informed the Purple Stripe that the Social Democratic Party and Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta have struck a deal that is sure to create headaches for newly re-elected President Nathan C. Britt. According to the source, the two parties have agreed to form a "coalition of outsiders" which basically guarantees that all legislative power will be removed from the LibCon Party for the next four years (despite the fact that they controlled all the seats just a few months ago).

The new coalition does not come as a surprise to some. The center-left Social Democratic Party seemed to have been given the "endorsement to govern" after taking the pluarity of the vote this past November. However, all true power lay within the third place Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta who had enough votes to give either the LibCon's or Social Democrats enough votes to govern. Early predicitions assumed that the center-right RKP would lean toward joining with the conservative LibCon Party. However, after many meetings between the two parties ended in bitter standoffs, a deal between the SDP and RKP seemed far more likely.

While this new coalition ensures who will control the House of Representatives, there are other matters to be dealt with. The coalition controls 69% of the legislature and has the ability to amend the constitution. Many wonder whether the new coalition will use their numbers to take further swipes at the LibCon's by amending the Constitution to allow the new parties to propose a new cabinet (which is entirely dominated by the LibCon Party). Others believe that there may be a re-vote for President so that a candidate who is for the coalition can win the Presidency and force the LibCon's to be entirely in the wilderness.

Axis Headquarters Seized by Partisans
Image
The Axis in Jelbania Headquarters in Nrlakhydwas, Nemawar District where extreme party members of the Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta are holding hostages.
NRLAKHYDWAS - It was just your typical day here in Nemawar. Everyone was attending to their daily work, the politicians were on their bickering over some social reform bill, and everything was the way it should be.

And then, there was a scream.

Outside of the Axis Headquarters here in Nrlakhydwas, a large mob with guns, signs, and (of course) pitchforks, charged upon the Axis in Jelbania Executive Building, overwhelmed security and seized control of the building by 10:00 A.M. local time. Police immediately arrived upon the scene only to discover that what was actually happening was a hostage situation. The mob began demanding that the Axis Alliance withdraw from Jelbania or they would begin killing all of the hostages inside. Given that the Axis Headquarters employs a large number of Jelbanians, the actual number of hostages is uncertain.

What is certain is that the name of this mob who destroyed this normal day is the Sons of Light - a branch of the Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta that recruits paramilitary in case the party would ever need to resort to drastic measures to push for the autonomy of Rilmos (the party's main goal being the independence of Rilmos). This shocking revelation caught RKP members by surprise, and the 22-member delegation from Nemawar immediately left the capital to address the situation.
Image
RKP Leader Jlekai discussing the negotiations.

The leader of the RKP, Ernest Jlekai, has been able to get passed the security lines and try to make negotiations with the members of the Sons of Light. According to him, the organization acted in this manner because they believed that the Axis Alliance was preventing Rilmos from gaining further autonomy from Jelbania (something, Jlekai says is complete rubbish). However, the situation drags on. An official response from the Axis has not been given yet but is expected shortly. The Purple Stripe will keep you posted.

Britt Wins Another Close Reelection

Nathan C. Britt of the LibCon Party, won another term as President in the January 2945 elections. Britt won the presidential election with 50.07% (it was initially said to be 50.04%, but errors were made in initial calculations) in the second round, narrowly defeating SDP candidate John Reighton, who won 49.93% (there were initial errors in the calculation of the percentage as well) of the vote. Britt won reelection by a 0.77% margin, which is virtually nonexistent in the history of recent presidential elections. In the first round, Reighton won the most votes, carrying 36.51% of the vote, and Britt received 35.71% of the vote. RKP leader Ernest Jlekai was defeated in the first round with 27.78% of the vote.

For many, the victory of Nathan C. Britt was a surprise, as given with an approval rating hovering just above 40%, according to recent polls, which indicate that an incumbent would have lost. This seems to have affected his reelection, since he won by a margin of less than 1%. Many question the political stability of Jelbania, given the continued hung legislature, and the need for a runoff, which itself was very close.

Britt is currently the longest serving President since the creation of the office in 2903 after Benjamin Kirkson of the SDP, who served a total of about 17 years.

LibCon Party Wins a Plurality in a Hung House of Representatives

The LibCon Party won the most seats in the House of Representatives, gaining a total of 35 seats, increasing its seats to 181. The SDP lost 36 seats, mostly to the LibCon Party, but one to the RKP. The RKP gained one seat. This puts the seats each party holds at 181–174–130 for the LibCon Party, SDP, and RKP. The LibCon Party won 37.16% of the votes, while the SDP won 35.83% of the vote, and the RKP won 27.01% of the vote. However, no party gained more than 50% of the votes or seats, resulting in another hung legislature.

One noticeable fact is that a continued SDP/RKP coalition would combine to have less than 2/3 of the seats, the number of seats required to pass a constitutional amendment. A coalition between the LibCon Party and the RKP would also result in less than 2/3 of the seats. A coalition between the LibCon Party and the SDP is considered extremely unlikely, given that the parties are rivals and have different political ideologies.

It is unclear what will happen in the next election; it seems as if another hung legislature is inevitable.

Attempt to Save Hostages Fails
Foreign Affairs Minister Laura Rice Assures the Purple Stripe that International Relations are still Normal

Defense Minister Harry Testert is under fire for a failed attempt to save the Axis hostages in Nrlakhydwas. Testert authorized members of the elite Jelbanian Hawks to infiltrate the Axis Headquarters building and try to overcome the Sons of Light by force. This attempt almost worked until communication with one of the Hawks was disrupted and caused that Hawk to strike too quickly. The Hawk, Aaron Isaacs, is dead.

The Hawks were then forced to bail out as the Sons of Light pointed the guns at the hostages and screamed that all of them would die if the Hawks didn't leave. The Ministry of Defense then released a report detailing the attacks and the testimonies of the surviving Hawks. From this information, it is confirmed that at least ten Axis employees (all foreign) are dead, and that at least another twenty of both Jelbanian and foreign descent are still being held.

This embarassment has been a huge problem for Jelbania, who is trying to prove that they are a viable and loyal Axis member. Foreign Minister Rice met with the press today and assured everyone that this fiasco has not hurt Jelbania's international relations. When asked why the Axis hasn't intervened, the Foreign Minister laughed dryly and was quoted as saying, "The Axis in Jelbania? With so many other wars going on right now, do you really think the Axis has anything to spare for a crisis like this?" This candid remark led to a question about whether the Axis is too busy and ineffective, to which Rice replied that it would be foolish to believe that the Axis is overstretched. "The Axis has had to deal with far more difficult situations than the ones they are facing now. I have now doubt that they can handle these with ease."

Ernest Jlekai, who has been using his authority as chair of the RKP (which controls the Sons of Light) to try to get the group to back down, was not able to be reached for comment. However, a spokesperson for the RKP said that the chairman was doing everything in his power to bring these party loyalists into line.

News Brief: Internal Party Coup Forces Jlekai Out
RKP leader Ernest Jlekai has been ousted as leader of the party, sources tell the Purple Stripe. The new leader is Ricardo Jorsett, a favorite of the Sons of Light, and a huge supporter of Rilmos independence. Jorsett is also the distant descendant of Dick Jorsett V, founder of the original Axis Alliance of Terra. Jorsett, however, is very anti-Axis. We'll keep you posted.

Jelbania Ousts Axis

Following the surprising ousting of Ernest Jlekai as leader of the Rilmosék Kaiwrntumo Prta, the RKP did a full 180 on foreign policy and proposed a bill to reject the Axis Alliance. To the surprise of some political analysts, the bill to withdraw the Federal Republic of Jelbania from the Axis passed with almost a 2/3rds majority - 311 voting in favor to 174 voting against. After all the votes were in, members of the RKP and the LibCon Party applauded as almost twenty years of Axis presence in international politics came to a screeching halt.

"In the past, our party has been complacent with the Axis. However, when a foreign power continues to fight only for itself and ignores the conflicts of its own members as in Selucia and Al'Badara, the time has come to question their fidelity," said RKP leader Jorsett on the House floor.

"The Axis has proved to be a bust," said ousted Foreign Minister Laura Rice. "We invested in them, hoping that they would catapult our country to the international stage. Instead, they have merely made us a scapegoat of their greater powergrab. There is no more reason for our country to remain in this union."

After the vote, questions lingered over how relations with neighbors like Deltaria, Zardugal, Vanuku, Cobura, and Jakania (Axis members all) would be shaped after Jelbania withdrew. Many believe that, given Zardugal's current struggles abroad, the relationship with Zardugal and Jelbania will be unchanged. However, there is also speculation that the collapse of one nation could lead to other nations defecting from the Axis.
