The Gadur Times MOTION TO REVIVE THE CAG MAY FAIL TO TABLE IN NLP INTERNAL ELECTION!Gadur, Marligantos - When the then-President-Elect Ortega Conde called for a return of the CAG, the Conservative Alliance for Gaduridos, the revival of the organization was hailed as the ultimate symbol for "conservative solidarity". Of course, according to NLP procedure, before the NLP could formally announce its entry into the CAG, it first had to be presented before the nationwide NLP Membership, by getting 5% of the NLP national membership to call for the tabling of the motion before the NLP convention. Then, of course, it would have to pass a vote of simple majority during the NLP national convention.
With polls of NLP members consistently showing that this measure was the 2nd most popular motion to table in a coming NLP national convention, along with showing +51 favorability rating, political pundits were quick to suggest that this motion would be tabled and passed with ease - particularly since it was supported by Carlos Tam, Prime Minister of the Federal Union, and the NLP Chairman.
Since his move to revive the NLP, Carlos Tam, and the Nationalist-Libertarian faction to which he belonged to, have been unstoppable - winning every one of the usually vicious NLP internal elections with unprecedented speed and ease. This has been (in the
Gadur Times' opinion) mistakenly referred to as the "collapse of Tam's opposition within the NLP" in national political coverage. More accurately, opposition to Carlos Tam within the NLP has not so much "collapsed" as much as it has "never materialized" - with the near-flawless string of victories Prime Minister Tam and President Conde have brought to the NLP, opposition to the duo, as well as the Nationalist-Libertarian faction of the NLP which they represent, is practically political suicide.
Yet, the CAG motion looks set to fail in gaining enough support to even be tabled in the NLP conference next month. Though Tam and Conde lobbied hard for support for the CAG motion during the fall, it appears that even they have given up on this measure being tabled - let alone be voted through by the NLP national membership.
On paper, this appears to make no sense - a massively popular measure, supported by extremely popular NLP figures, with no real formal opposition - how does a motion like this fail to be
tabled? We, here, at
The Gadur Times, speculate that this is due to recent political developments, lack of support from the GFP and the SCP, as well as a fundamental characteristic of the NLP constituency.
First, the political situation - the leftist opposition in the Federal Union collapsed with the dissolution of the SUD 2 years ago, leaving the SPP as the sole leftist nationwide party. Given that the CAG was designed as a conservative solidarity movement against the now practically non-existent left, it is probable that some now consider an organization of conservative solidarity unnecessary. Meanwhile, the NLP-SCP-GFP alliance has held firm even without the formal CAG - seemingly suggesting that the parties do not require the CAG to run a conservative government for Gaduridos.
Second, after a snap election that saw the short-lived WTP sweep into power, the
Union Times, the SCP newspaper, declared that Prime Minister Carlos Tam had failed in recreating the CAG. That, combined with the lackluster support that Carlos Tam had to begin with from the GFP and SCP regarding the reconstruction of the CAG, appears to have been interpreted as apathy towards the CAG from the other two conservative parties by the NLP voting public. Obviously, the CAG cannot be run by the NLP alone, and thus, this is likely another reason for the dramatic turn in public opinion regarding the CAG motion.
Lastly, one of the core ideological tenents of the NLP has been to eliminate pointless bureaucracy in government. Stretching this logic further, it could be speculated that the NLP voting public is deeply skeptical of bureaucracy and any "complicating" of the process in general. Given that the threat of the opposition does not appear to warrant the institution of the CAG, and given the lack of enthusiasm the GFP and the SCP appear to have towards recreating the CAG, it stands to reason that the NLP voting public now simply sees the recreation of the CAG as more pointless bureaucracy, especially given the fact that the conservative coalition appears to be working fine for now without it.
There are, of course, still measures to be voted on in the national conference a couple of weeks from now, but it appears that, for all intents and purposes, the issue of the CAG has been placed on the backburner for now, for an indefinite amount of time.
Whether the issue of the CAG will make a return appears to be in the hands of the SCP and GFP -
it appears that the NLP membership is asking the SCP and GFP whether this is the will of the two other parties - how they respond to the shelving of the CAG issue will almost certainly be interpreted as their official reply.Reported, December, 4654.
