ALORIA MAY PROVIDE VARIOUS BELUZIAN GROUPS WITH WEAPONS

According to unconfirmed sources, Aloria will arm various anti-NOU Beluzian groups and paramilitaries. After Wehnert held talks with both the prime minister of Beluzia and the ruthless Beluzian president, Wehnert announced he plans to intervene if necessary. This led to tensions rising in the Senate, as the president and the DSU leader clashed on the issue. The president has been criticised for saying Aloria should preserve peace "through a show of military strength". President Wehnert has defended his comments, saying he "100% stands by" what he said.

The reports today about arming Beluzian opposition forces are yet to be confirmed by the government. The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed it is ready to intervene, but further details have not yet been revealed. Many of Wehnert's critics say the president only wants to intervene because he wants to retire at the end of this term and wants to go out with a major victory. Many are now speculating that Wehnert will not resign before 4300, despite him announcing his intentions to on many occasions, if the potential Beluzian civil war is still ongoing by the next election.

The reports today suggest the Wehnert administration is committed to removing President Pantafloja from office. The danger for Aloria is they may be about to intervene in a country where victory is not possible. The NOU won the recent election comfortably - they hold the presidency and are the largest party in Congress. If the Beluzian opposition is to be successful, they will need support from nations other than Aloria. If the intervention in Beluzia is unsuccessful, it will mean Wehnert's entire political career will be overshadowed by it. If they win the civil war, it will mean a more peaceful Artania, and Wehnert will retire a hero to many Alorians.

"THE GOVERNMENT HAS JUMPED INTO THE DEEP END"

Image
Finn Lauterbach speaking in the Senate

The DSU has condemned the Senate authorizing military action in Beluzia. He said this on Wednesday:

The government has said they would exhaust diplomatic action to avoid intervention, so it surprised me to hear the Senate would authorize military intervention. The government has truly jumped into the deep end on this, we need a correct solution, even if it take a while. Anything to stop suffering and instability.

ALORIA VOTES TO ARM, FUND BELUZIAN GROUPS
Ministries of Defence and Finance authorized to extend loans
Ministry of Defence authorized to provide arms and advisers

As tensions heat up in Beluzia, Aloria has voted to empower its ministers to arm, fund, and advise "Beluzian groups opposing undemocratic rule" in the country. Aloria, previously somewhat withdrawn from the world stage, has taken unilateral action to promote stability and democracy in Artania. The regime of the Beluzian Military Junta has attempted to establish regional dictatorships and killed peaceful protestors. Opposing them are multiple groups within Beluzia.

The law Authorization of Military Aid to Beluzia was proposed by senior governing coalition member Plaid Ffederaliaeth a Rhyddid. It authorizes the Ministry of Defence to supply loans, arms, and advisors to "Beluzian groups opposing undemocratic rule" as defined by the Ministry of Defence, as well as empowering the Ministry of Finance to do the same.

The law has the strong support of the sitting government, with Llywydd/Präsident Gerald Wehnert, Prif Weinidog/Premierminister George Llewellyn, and Minister of Defence Reinhard Vogel supporting intervention. Protests in Aloria have broken out, with the opposition party Democratic Socialist Union and the growing religious group Evangelical Brethren Conference, Aloria, coming out in strong opposition to the war. Notably, however, the Revolutionary Students' Front, the largest party and most leftist, voted to support intervention while still strongly opposing the sitting government.

The bill stops short of a declaration of war, which some analysts predict Aloria would have difficulty executing. Land access to Beluzia from Aloria is nonexistent, although both countries are close to each other geographically. Opposition and support for the war is growing, and threatens to polarize Aloria's internal politics even more starkly than they have been in recent decades.

DSU ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS

Lauterbach at DSU campaign launch

The DSU have officially launched their campaign and manifesto for June's election. The manifesto called 'Aloria can be better for all' pushed for a return of multiple tax brackets and greater welfare programs. It also outlined a reduction in the defense budget to make way for investments in education and infrastructure to boost the economy. When announcing the party's manifesto Finn Lauterbach said this:

This thorough plan will help guide us through the 4 years of challenges we face and build a bridge between the poorest and richest of our country. We want better transport, a regulated free market and peace across Terra. We know Aloria can be better for all.

LIBERTARIANS ELECT NEW LEADER

The Libertarian Party has elected Henrik Melsbach as their new leader, after Wehnert stood down. Melsbach will also be the Libertarian presidential candidate. Wehnert, who is now 71, has made the decision to retire. He has served five terms as president, and has been leader of the Libertarians since 4287. Despite rumours that the president would continue due to the rising tensions in Beluzia, he has still decided it is time for a fresh face to lead his party, and the country.

Mr Melsbach faced Glenice Pritchard in the Libertarian leadership election. Pritchard was the better known candidate, having been a government minister and the deputy leader of the Libertarians, however Melsbach was seen as the more charismatic politician. He gave very little detail on policies throughout the campaign, but he talked a lot about the party attracting a wider range of voters. He said he "admired" Wehnert but recognised the need "for a message that attracts all different kinds of people".

DSU CELEBRATES DESPITE GAINS FROM THE RIGHT

Image
DSU supporters celebrating

The people have voted and the results are in: Aloria has voted right again. The RSF and Nationalists saw a drop in support, while the Federalists, Libertarians and AVL saw minor gains. Despite this, the party which saw the largest increase of seats was the DSU who won 99, their most ever. They received 18% of the vote, playing off the anti-war and anti-government protests, which really hurt the RSF instead of the government itself.

HENRIK MELSBACH ELECTED PRESIDENT AS GERALD WEHNERT SAYS FAREWELL

Image
Henrik Melsbach has been elected president of Aloria

Henrik Melsbach, the Libertarian Party candidate for the presidency, won the 4298 election. The election was close, the closest it has been for years, but Melsbach triumphed over Curia Epidiana from the DSU. In the leglisative elections, it wss the PFR who performed the best. The RSF and Parti Cenedlaetholwyr Aloriuna suffered the most, but the party that made the most gains was the DSU. The Libertarians and the AVL made small gains.

Henrik Melsbach said he will be a "president for all" and hopes he can be a strong leader for Aloria. He aims to "restore peace" on the continent, and will look to resolve the current situation in Beluzia "as soon as possible".

Aloria had a big decision to make, and they have voted for economic freedom, equality of opportunity and a belief in Aloria. I want to thank Curia Epidiana for participating in an interesting election campaign, it has been a privilege. I now want to lead Aloria with strength and pride. I want to be a president for all - no Alorian will be left behind. Since 4287, we have been led by a great leader. Gerald Wehnert is a hero to many in my party. He has been a great president, and he is an even better person. I have had the opportunity to work with him under his presidency, and he always believed that what he was doing was best for ordinary Alorian people. I will continue to lead in the belief that we will do what is best for ordinary Alorians.

There are challenges facing Aloria right now. Beluzia is on the cusp of a civil war, and there is disunity in Artania about how to deal with the issue. Under my presidency, Aloria will lead on this issue. We will deal with the situation as soon as possible, and we will restore peace to Artania. We will do so through having a well-funded, strong military, as well as a good diplomatic approach. I will personally work with leaders from all parties to come to a solution that will unite Aloria behind our approach to peace on Terra. From this day forward, we will fight for the future of democracy!

Gerald Wehnert also gave a speech as he left his presidential office for the last time. He described serving Aloria as a "great honour" and he is sure President Melsbach will be a "superb leader for the Alorian people". As he ended his speech, it was clear he was feeling extremely emotional.

Image
Gerald Wehnert made his last speech as president

Firstly, I want to say that it has been a great honour to serve this nation and all its people as president. When I entered politics, I did so to bring change that would benefit the Alorian people. That is still the view I hold today. I entered politics to challenge the political establishment, to tear it down and build a better Aloria. Some people would argue that I am now automatically part of the political establishment because I have served as president for so long. However, I hope the political establishment I have built is a better, more transparent, fairer one. And I believe this has been proven by the positive changes I and many others in my party and my administration have made. While president in the 4270s, I introduced the minimum wage. It brought greater certainty and wealth to millions of Alorians. As well as this, we brought forward a privatisation programme, we liberalised the economy, we introduced a fair, merit-based immigration system, and after the communist rule of the late 4270s and early 4280s we defeated evil communism! Recently, we have looked to bring peace to our ally Beluzia. We have gave more power to local governments, drastically reduced taxes on people and enterprise, maintained a strong military and, most importantly, we got Aloria out of the bureaucratic, anti-democratic, sovereign-stealing superstate called the AU! That is my biggest achievement, that is the Alorian people's biggest achievement and we can all be proud that we have mad Aloria a freer nation. We truly have MADE ALORIA GREAT AGAIN! Thank you, thank you!

The time has now come for Gerald Wehnert to step down, after serving as president on five occasions over three decades. Wehnert is most noted for being a conviction politician. Wehnert will be missed by many in his party, and many on the right. He was hated by most of the left, and he divided the nation, but he will be remembered as one of the most influential politicians of his generation. Farewell Gerald Wehnert, you will be missed.
