PRESIDENT MELSBACH ATTACKS BELUZIAN GOVERNMENT, THREATENS MILITARY INTERVENTION

Image

President Henrik Melsbach has called out the Beluzian government for its "vile" policies and positions. The Beluzians look set to vote in favour of withdrawing from various treaties, such as the Anti Slavery Treaty. This would allow Beluzia to legalise slavery, something the Business and Development Party (BDP) has announced its support for in Congress. The Alorian government's position has been anti-BDP for many years, however the attacks on the BDP today from the president were different. Instead of simply announcing their support for the Beluzian opposition, Melsbach went one step further. The president said the Alorian government are willing to intervene "with an immediate response" if the BDP are unwilling to cooperate.

Speaking at a major event today, Melsbach said he fully respect the rights of foreign governments to "govern as they please within international law", however he said the BDP would not get away with persecution of its own people or opposition politicians.

Aloria is ready to intervene in Beluzia with an immediate response to the persecution of its own people or indeed the persecution of opposition politicians. While we accept and fully respect the right of governments all around Terra to govern as they please, within international law of course, we will not stand for the persecution of innocent minorities. The BDP is an extremely, extremely dangerous party, incapable of governing with tolerance and respect. We will not let our friends down - even if that means a military response. I do not take the decision to intervene in a foreign country lightly. In fact, if I do so, it will be the hardest decision of my time as president; that I can guarantee. But we will not let innocent people be killed in the name of the BDP's anti-socialist agenda. Now, I am no socialist! I believe in free-market economics, I am a libertarian after all, but the BDP does not believe in the same things my party, my administration and I do. The BDP believes in an authoritarian society, where freedom is a privilege not a right. They believe the poor should suffer simply for being poor, and ethnic minorities must suffer simply for being a minority. This is not acceptable and if the BDP continues with its extremist, violent agenda I will have no choice but to intervene.

REPORTS: PRESIDENT TOLD FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER "WAR IS INEVITABLE"

Image
The president is under pressure to respond to these reports as soon as possible

Unconfirmed reports say President Melsbach told Foreign Affairs Minister Henning Dreher that "war is inevitable" with Beluzia. These reports come as the president said he has been left with very little choice following the Beluzian government's extraordinary budget. The president has yet to comment on these reports, and it is unclear how these leaks happened. It is thought all of the president's senior advisors, who were supposedly present in the room when the conversation between Melsbach and Dreher happened, have been suspended until it is known how these reports managed to get out to the press.

This has left the president in a difficult position, as he will now have to respond to the reports. If the president stands by his comments, it could cause a reaction from the Beluzians. Furthermore, it was also announced by the government today that they are consulting on the possibility of once again providing military aid to Beluzian opposition groups.

ALORIA TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR BELUZIAN OPPOSITION GROUPS

The government has proposed that Aloria shall once again provide military aid to Beluzian opposition groups. Previously, Aloria funded these groups from 4295 to 4302, however the government decided not to renew the act. Now, the Libertarians have proposed a bill almost identical to the previous act, allowing Ministry of Defence to provide military aid to groups who oppose the Beluzian regime.

As well as this, the president is due to make a speech about the current situation at a press conference later today. It is thought he will emphasise the importance of helping allies. Furthermore, he will tell other Artanian nations to do more to end the crisis. The president will make it clear the only way to do this will be with regime change. One Libertarian Senator told us he hopes the president will act decisively and quickly.

"It is important we do what is best for our friends in Artania, and funding militant Beluzian opposition groups is only one step towards ending the crisis. We need to make it clear to the world that the only way to solve this is through quick and decisive military action. It is clear that regime change must occur."

PRESIDENT STEPS UP PRESSURE ON BELUZIA AS HE MAKES SPEECH AT MILITARY BASE

Image

President Melsbach made a speech at a press conference at a military base in Ceres, Sildar today. The speech was clearly directed at the whole of Artania, not just Aloria. He made it clear that action will be taken against the Wewecho Regime. By speaking at a military base, the president made it clear to the Beluzians that he means what he says. It is now unclear how the Beluzian government will respond.

Melsbach even mentioned the possibility of a ground invasion in Beluzia. While this seems unlikely at this stage, it is unusual for a president to speak so openly about the possible invasion of another nation. The president has his critics here in Aloria for pursuing a military approach instead of a diplomatic one, although the government say the Beluzian president has had many chances to stand down and resolve the crisis peacefully.

Our continent, Artania, is facing an extremely difficult time. I believe this is a time for all of our nations, our independent, sovereign nations, to come together to work on a meaningful and quick solution to the crisis in Beluzia. This is no time for indecisiveness. This is a time for real leadership, a time for democratically-elected world leaders to work together for a better tomorrow. I have never been more certain of anything before - if we do not act, we will be partially responsible for the deaths of, possibly, hundreds of thousands of innocent lives at the hands of a brutal dictatorship in Beluzia.

In Aloria, we believe in helping our friends. That is why I am, today, proposing the reintroduction of military aid to Beluzian opposition groups. It is time to bring down this intolerant regime that currently holds the power in Beluzia. Lets make this clear. President Alphonse Gabriel Wewecho, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. Personally, I prefer the easy way. Stop killing innocent people, including minorities, and put the interests of Beluzian citizens before the interests of yourself and Prime Minister Dr Wewecho Pantafloja.

Unfortunately, the extremely authoritarian rule of the BDP is unlikely to stop its disgusting and vile methods of governing its people. Therefore, I have no choice. Aloria will defend the Beluzian people. As I said before, militant opposition groups will receive funding from Aloria, but we must do more. That is why we will also be imposing tough but fair economic sanctions on Beluzia. Finally, a Senate committee is looking into the possible effects of a ground invasion in Beluzia. I believe in a peaceful Terra and I believe the best way to make it possible is through a show of military strength! Thank you.

MELSBACH OPENS UP ABOUT FOREIGN POLICY

In an interview today, Melsbach talked about Aloria's foreign policy and about Aloria's intervention in Beluzia. During the interview, the president also talked about the situation in Hulstria, something he has been reluctant to speak about in the past.

Good morning president. Now, your government has become very involved in the Beluzia recently. Are you confident you won't exacerbate the problem?

Well, I am aware that military intervention in foreign countries does not always go to plan. Look, the aim of this is to bring peace to a country which has experienced hardship in recent years due to a succession of BDP presidents, most notably Dr Wewecho Pantafloja. It is our duty to help our friends. That is what Aloria will do.

Is there a possibility of a ground invasion in Beluzia and how many losses would there be for Aloria?

Lets be clear about this, a ground invasion of Beluzia is not what we want and is still unlikely to happen. I do not want to risk the lives of Alorian people, nor do I want to risk the lives of innocent Beluzians either. What I would prefer is a diplomatic solution. Now, it is clear that is not going to happen, which is why we have authorised military aid to Beluzian opposition groups. Personally, I would be horrified to see just one Alorian life lost because of the crisis in Beluzia but we need to face the facts. If something is not done to stop the oppressive Wewecho regime, we would be responsible for not doing more to help. I am confident that if there is to be a ground invasion of Beluzia we would be successful. However, lots of Alorian lives would be lost and that is not something I want to see.

Do you think more could be done by other Artanian nations?

Absolutely. I think we should be looking to our neighbours in Artania and asking them to do more to stop this totalitarian regime. You've only got to look at countries like Dorvik and Malivia and you'll ask yourself, are they doing enough? And you'll find the answer to that question is no they are not. I would like to see a coalition of democratic forces help remove Wewecho from office and call for democratic elections in Beluzia as soon as possible.

Looking around the rest of the world, what is your opinion on the current sitation in Hulstria? Does the Alorian government recognise the People's State of Hulstria as an independent country?

The situation in Hulstria is very complex and I think it is fair to assume there is blame on both sides here. We will never support communism, it is simply an abhorrent ideology. Despite that, the Hulstrian one-party state is a divisive, racist, authoritarian regime. Something must be done to reunite Hulstria and end the one-party system.

Is it in Aloria's interests to push its own vision and its own ideas on the rest of Terra?

Of course not. I believe in democracy and fair elections, however Aloria will not become the world police. That is not my ambition. Firstly, we are simply not powerful enough to do that and secondly it would cause more division and hate to oppress our politics on other countries. That does not mean we should let the Hulstrians do what they are currently doing.

So what should be done?

I think it would be wrong to support the communists. I also think it would be wrong to support the current ruling faction in Hulstria. What I believe is that we should support the Hulsterreicher Partei (Moderaten). This moderate branch is less authoritarian and if they were to gain control of Hulstria it could lead to the end of this crisis. I think Istalia is wrong to take the approach they have by supporting the People's State of Hulstria.

ALORIA WILL NOT RECOGNISE THE PEOPLE'S STATE OF HULSTRIA

President Melsbach has once again made it clear that Aloria will not recognise the People's State of Hulstria as an independent nation. This comes just hours after Malivia announced it recognises the People's State of Hulstria as the sole legitimate government of Hulstria. The president said Aloria "will never support communists", however the president also said he condemns the actions of the Hulstrian government.

The president's position has clearly not changed, as he said he supports the moderate faction of the Hulsterreicher Partei. Recently, Melsbach has become very involved in foreign affairs and he says he hopes for more cooperation between Artanian nations to bring together a coalition of democratic forces. The president hopes this proposed coalition of democratic allies will help preserve peace in Artania, and other places around the world such as Hulstria.

With the president becoming more involved in foreign affairs, it seems Melsbach wants Aloria to increase its power around Terra. Melsbach said it is "important for Aloria to be a strong, powerful voice of freedom and democracy around Terra".

MELSBACH STEPS DOWN FROM ROLE AS LEADER OF THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY

Image

President Henrik Melsbach, who has just been elected president for the sixth time, has announced he will resign from his role as leader of the Libertarian Party after the Libertarians suffered huge losses in the elections to the Senate. Melsbach won the presidency, although he was unopposed, but his party struggled in the Senate election, winning only 36 seats. This has left the Libertarians with little power in the Senate and the president said he takes full responsibility for the election result. In the presidential election, the ANC and AVL chose not to run candidates, while the PFR endorsed Melsbach, meaning the president got reelected. Some political commentators are saying the lack of an alternative in the presidential election is a danger to democracy, blaming the ANC and AVL for not running a candidate against the Libertarians.

Within hours of the results being announced, Henrik Melsbach revealed he is to stand down from the leadership of the Libertarian Party with immediate effect, triggering a leadership election. The three candidates who have put their names forward are Maldwyn Vaughn (deputy leader of the Libertarians since 4299), Margareta Schuchard and Meinhard Wörner. If Schuchard wins the election, she will be the first female leader of the Libertarian Party.

Despite resigning as leader of the Libertarians, Melsbach has vowed to serve his four-year term as president before retiring. In his speech at the Libertarian Party HQ, Melsbach said it was time for the Libertarians to have a new face.

I fought a hard campaign and I tried my absolute best to get my party a larger number of seats. I worked with Libertarian Party Senators, as well as volunteers, to get our party a good election result, to enable us to tackle the issues Aloria faces. During my time as leader, we have achieved so much. Aloria is now a richer country, a country of greater opportunity no matter where you come from or who you are. I am proud of that. But I am recognise that the voters rejected me and our manifesto at this election. It is time for the Libertarian Party to take a new direction. Whilst I would love to lead the party in this new direction - to tackle new and challenging issues and help ordinary Alorian people - I have come to the decision that that person cannot be me. It is time for our party to have a new face at the helm, a fresh perspective on tackling these important issues. We still have a lot of work to do, including balancing the budget and improving our military. I hope this party elects a leader capable of tacking these issues. I am confident we will.

Despite stepping down from my role as leader of the Libertarian Party, I will serve a full four-year term as president. Aloria elected me to serve them until 4313, so that it is what I must do and it is what I want to do. Before, I mentioned the work that needs to be done - improving our military and balancing the budget. I will still be involved in these issues, no doubt about that. I will lead this country from the front, and I promise to do the best job to serve Alorian interests around the world. Thank you.
