     Aloria makes timid economic recovery
     November 5348
Image
The Alorian economy has been in a dire state as a result of decades of mismanagement and neglect, plunging living standards and grinding economic activity to a halt. This is a situation that the liberal PRR / FDP government has vowed to remedy since its establishment. After six years in power, the government can celebrate moderate success in this regard, though its promised "Aurorian miracle" is far from becoming a reality. Instead we have seen moderate economic growth and an increase in foreign direct investments, which has led to rising standards of living, but this growth has been unequal and may not be sustainable in the long run, and inequality has also augmented.

Aloria's growth has been spurred by the implementation of a number of economic reforms that simplify the tax code and deregulate the economy, also coupled with a reduction in welfare spending and the privatization of most state-owned enterprises. The adoption of a flat tax of 23%, including the income tax, corporate tax, essential goods and luxury goods tax, has partially been responsible for the moderate growth, though critics argue it is a form of regressive taxation and also blame it for the rise in inequality. A further possible cause behind Aloria's economic recovery is the establishment of the LuKuDuAl Union, a free trade area and military alliance grouping together Artania's emerging economies and adhered to, besides Aloria, by Luthori, Kundrati, and Dundorf. These four nations have similar levels of economic development and military power, and the hope is that the Union will allow them to pool together their resources in order to enhance their economic and military status without too much dependence on any great power.

Regarding economic independence the Alorian government has also been keen to reduce Aloria's dependence on foreign oil and gas. Aloria benefits from a complex and large river system that includes the large Crentol River and its Delta. A number of hydroelectric dams already exist benefiting from this system, and the government has pledged to increase the amount of energy generated via hydroelectric power. Roughly 20% of Aloria's energy is currently generated this way, and the PRR / FDP government aims to increase that number to 30% within ten years.

Although Aloria has experienced an economic recovery and its economy is on an upward swing, this may be more the result of the establishment of an active government than any specific policies it has taken. The latter have had mixed results, with some critics praising the flat tax and deregulatory reforms as responsible for economic growth, while others have criticized the growing inequality and precarization of work that these policies have resulted in. But for now, enjoying an unchallenged monopoly on power, the PRR / FDP has no reason to change course, meaning that its reforms are likely to continue.

     Revitalization of Llyn
     November 5350
Image
As part of the constitutional reforms adopted seven years ago, the federal government of Aloria was relocated to the old city of Llyn. Llyn is an ancient and prestigious city, notable for being the first capital of the Kingdom of Aloria and the headquarters of the national church the Alorian Hosian Church. In spite of this, the city has been overshadowed by other settlements in recent times, and Llyn, like much of the rest of the State of Crentol, has been largely abandoned. The consecration of Llyn as the national capital has largely been a symbolic gesture, but now the PRR / FDP government is eager to bring back the old glory of the ancient capital.

One of the most notable landmarks of the city is the famous Tower of Llyn, now emblematic of the state of decay the city suffers from. The tower was built in the 19th century, at a time when the Kingdom of Aloria had been unwillingly incorporated into the Dundorfian Empire while retaining a larger degree of autonomy than other kingdoms in the Reich. It was built to showcase Aloria's continued industrial and economic might, though the construction was erected at the tail end of Aloria's two centuries long Golden Age, when its political and military significance were waning and Aloria was a kingdom in decline. Regardless, it still remained the industrial heartland of the Dundorfian Reich, and the Tower of Llyn is a clear statement of Aloria's self confidence in spite of the loss of its independence.

The Tower was slightly damaged during the Dundorfian Civil War, and after Aloria regained its independence it was largely neglected on account of its perceived unaesthetic appearance and legacy of Dundorfian rule. But over the centuries is has remained a popular tourist attraction, though shadowed by more notable monuments such as the Choir of the Giants (OOC Stonehenge). The economic collapse Aloria experienced during the last decades have hurt the Tower and the city of Llyn, which had largely become a ghost town. The restoration of a stable government allowed the region of Crentol to recover some of its economic activity, and some tourism has returned to Llyn, but the city and its Tower remain in bad shape.

As part of the government's program of economic revitalization the Minister of Tourism Malou Brechbühler has pledged much of her ministry's budget to restoring the capital, and especially the symbolic Tower of Llyn. Though this move has been praised for helping preserve Aloria's architectural heritage, many residents of Llyn fear the potential negative consequences mass tourism could bring to their city. Regardless, Aloria's ancient capital is in desperate need of a makeover, and perhaps Ms. Brechbühler's pledge will help achieve just that.

Ein Hunain

Party Description:

A Nationalist and Conservative party founded in Llyn, Crentol as a response to the power vacuum left in the nation after the fall of the communist regime. The party's name, Ein Hunain, means Ourselves in Luthorian. The party is democratic and accepts liberal values such as rule of law, free elections and free speech. The party was founded exclusively by Dradic Alorians. Officially the party accepts the Dundorfian minority but in practice views them with much skepticism and takes pride in representing Dradic peoples. The tension between Dundorf and Aloria spills over into the domestic discourse, which often leads to the Dundorfian minority being deemed foreign and untrustworthy.

Ein Hunain Party Report

The old radical nationalist newspaper that circulated in the inner districts of Llyn, known as Ein Hunain, has been reorganized. Now that Ein Hunain is mostly known as a political organization that operates in every corner of the country, the newspaper that predated and created a forum for the party will now be reorganized into a new publication with a new name. This after a statement by chief editor of Ein Hunain (newspaper), Ieuan ap Baglan, on the front page of the last edition of the paper.

He noted that although many staff members have left the paper and joined the party, the party's success has also increased the interest in the publication. "We retain a lot of old dogs, and welcome new and younger spirits!", said Mr. Baglan. With the help of older experience and younger energy the editor will now focus on creating a nation-wide publication. This publication will be known as The Chronicle or Y Cronicl in Alorian. The paper will only be published in Alorian and not dundorfian. It will be conservative leaning but uphold truth and fair journalism. Like the color of the Ein Hunain (both newspaper and party) Y Cronicl will use the color blue in its graphic design.

Women in the Alorian Literary Canon

Image

In todays edition of the chronicle we would like to highlight the importance of women to our national literary "canon". I use quotation marks around canon because no one has yet to compiled an official cultural or literary canon for Aloria. Several unofficial canons exist and many avid Alorian readers have opinions of who should and shouldn't be included in such a canon. One writer that most agree should be featured is the Caersiarl born Catrin ferch Arthur who under pseudonym produced three outstanding novels that in many ways defined how we view the late 3800's. Catrin ferch Arthur was incredible in her ability to introduce the reader into the mundane aspects of the lives of her characters and in that mundaneness find a deeper emotional purpose. Her novel Y Cefnfor takes place in a rugged part of Llyn and describes the life of the unnamed female protagonist who struggles intensely with everything in life. Her description of dishes echo the romantic descriptions of heartbreak.

There is a satirical aspect of Catrin f. Arthur's work and the subject matter of her novels. At times the reader feels cheated or fooled due to how invested they have become in something that in their own lives they perceive as very mundane. Feminist scholars have analysed her novels as framing womanhood in a new and almost revolutionary way. In Y Cefnfor womanhood is portrayed through the actions of the protagonist and symbolism is often used to point to the larger struggle of female life.

We want to remember Catrin ferch Arthur and her sadly short life (died in childbirth when she was 31) by encouraging our readers to read her, or re-read her!

Ein Hunain in power! A new century for Aloria!

Image

Ein Hunain, the once small conservative nationalist newspaper has quickly grown to a political organization stretching from Llyn to Glichheit. Under the leadership of the great Briog ap Crallo, EH was able to establish itself as the foremost party to replace the old communist regime. Following an election held by the party that gave them a clear majority they now had the legitimacy they needed to walk into the Cymanfa Boblogaidd Gydffederal yr Alôr (People's Confederal Assembly of Aloria) and start fixing this country. Already on day one the party started drafting legislation that would change Aloria to its core. We will report more in depth on the specific changes made by our new Government when all the information is out. We can however report that a cabinet is being formed. And that reforms reigning from military to economics are to be expected.

New Life under Ein Hunain

The impact of the Ein Hunain government cannot be understated. For the first time in almost two decades the political turmoil, unrest and violence has finally stopped. Our country is just beginning to learn how to put this horrible troubled past behind us. We need to heal and look forward. Ein Hunain are the way forward. They share my ambition to look forward and heal from our troubled past. Most people realize this. Most people can see that our streets are safer, our government works and that our country is one again. Most people see this and see it as a good thing. But not everybody shares this sentiment. Dundorfian separatists that got emboldened during the troubles are did not magically stop hating Alorians and our republic the moment that Ein Hunain won the election. Many Alorians also view these Dundorfian-speakers with the same vigilance and disdain that they are met with. Not long ago we reported on a street fight that emerged in the mixed city of Karlstadt/Caersiarl between Dundorfian and Alorian youths. There is an obvious tension in the air. In the ground. In our hearts. We live in the same lands, in the same cities. Yet we don't see ourselves in each other, we don't look at their faces the way we look at our Alorian brothers. Even the language I am using now, us and them, ours and theirs. We are all Alorian, or should I say Alorische, citizens. This fighting cannot continue. A process of healing our country must be to seek and have an open dialogue with Dundorfian leaders. That dialogue will be difficult. We must be able to talk to them and coexist, without compromising our identity. One crucial fact is that there is only one Alorian country in Terra, this one, Aloria. We need a nation of our own, and what better place than the land we have been living on for millennia.

Many things about life in Aloria has changed. But much is still the same. Women still don't feel safe at night. Bread is too expensive. Alorians and Dundorfians clash and fight. Many were a bit too optimistic about the Ein Hunain. But the truth is that Aloria is a small power, with a weak economy. These things take time to change. We are a proud people. But we need to learn to become a patient people, that can learn to wait for our time, for our Alorian century.
