New Budget Cuts Shake Public Sector

Image

The new budget for this year breaks with previous Ein Hunain tradition of increasing spending and will cut public sector spending by 4 billion. This was proposed last Friday by Finance Minister, Llwyd ab Arfon, in a press conference that caused a lot of upheaval. The administration has been steadily increasing spending the last decade in an effort to support large infrastructure projects and restore order in a country filled with political turmoil. The administration has prioritized this big government approach combined with low taxes on corporations, resulting in substantial deficit spending. These budget cuts (which we will get into shortly) were thought by many to symbolize a shift towards more fiscal conservatism. But this idea was quickly put to rest when Lloyd ab Arfon announced a 50% reduction of the sales tax on luxury goods. A tax that primarily concerns the sale of Alorian golden jewelry to foreign buyers. This tax has provided a solid 580 billion ALO in revenue for the past ten years.

This tax cut means that the deficit that was expected to shrink, following the announcement of spending cuts, will now instead continue to grow, and grow even faster. Lloyd ab Arfon is however not too concerned with this. He was instead pretty pleased with himself when he reported on the economic outlook of the country and the results of the newly finalized national highway construction. The stability of the Alorik has been a hotly debated topic among Alorian economists, and Artanian economists for that matter. It is one of the weakest currencies in the continent and the argument for keeping it has mostly rested on ideas of national pride and developmentalist notions of self-reliance. Although the Alorik is better today than it was prior to the Ein Hunain administration, no one argues that it is a good currency. Foreign currencies are often used in Aloria to sell and buy goods. Many economists propose adopting the Dundorfian Mark or the Lourennian Franc. The discussion about this issue will continue, and will most likely intensify, now that the deficit is increasing further.

But what do these cuts mean to the public sector?

The budget in total spends 4 billion ALO less than the previous one, but many different department and ministries were cut more than that. Certain ministries and departments saw increased funding. The cuts in question target the ministry of finance, ministry of defense, ministry of internal affairs, ministry of environment and tourism and the ministry of foreign affairs. Most targeted was the ministry of finance, which got cut by 6 billion ALO. This was the most radical change in the budget and most of the press conference concentrated on what it meant for the ministry and for the Federal Republic. Lloyd ab Arfon announced that the ministry of finance (his own ministry) would restructure and refine its work. The ministry of finance, concerned with consumer affairs, central administration, tax issues, public procurement etc will focus a lot less on public sector engagement and redirect to administrative duties. In order to simplify the role of the state in the economy, public procurement will almost exclusively come from ministries other than the ministry of finance. Digital optimization has also allowed the administration to increase its efficiency, thus rendering a lot of workers without tasks.

We will continue to report on the economic state of the federal republic. We predict that this budget proposal will continue to effect the economic landscape for many years to come. This new economic dawn is very unsure. The old dirigiste methods of doing things are changing, and what that means, is uncertainty.

Large Scale Infantry Training in Wltrôn Highlands

Image

The Alorian Armed Forces (Lluoedd Arfog Alôreig) (LLA) will be conducting a week-long training in Kerfilip, Wltrôn with the aim of familiarizing the new recruits with the rugged northern Alorian landscape. An estimated 9.000 troops will be arriving by bus to the Kerfilip and staying in the barracks there for the night before they head out into the highlands. They will be guided by experienced military commanders of the previous regime. The LLA is still very new and many things that most militaries take for granted have to be done for the first time in Aloria. The goal of the training week will be to make sure that the infantry is totally prepared to deal with any invasion or threat in these sorts of environments. There is a unique military edge gained by specializing on performance in certain environments. The ministry of defence has laid out concrete priorities to develop world-class knowledge of this terrain. This training week will be one of several actions taken by the LLA to make sure that Aloria is kept safe and secure.

A new Challenger for the Presidential Office

Image

Pedr ap Cadno is the name of the 46 year old Senator from Keres, Sildar, who recently announced that he will be running against the fourth-term incumbent, President Aneirin ap Tegid. Mr. Cadno will be the first real challenger to ever contest a president in recent Alorian history. The iron fist of the Ein Hunain has always dismayed potential candidates from trying to challenge the sitting president. Only older senators with no real political future have dared to run their own campaigns and none of these campaigns have been remotely successful. However, the once strong arm of the central leadership is growing weaker within the party. There is a popular demand for different leadership and a new direction among party members and the general populace. The cabinet has not seen any new faces in over a decade, and the lines between party and state have been severely diminished. Factionalism within the party is deemed to be on the rise with many senators feeling that the interests of their constituents aren't being met.

Mr. Cadno started his political career only 5 years ago as mayor of Keres. Before the Ein Hunain administration, he worked in the municipal planning agency, responsible for industrial planning. Keres is a coastal city with a historic port that has served as the main export hub for Alorian goods. The port has however deteriorated substantially in the past decades due to lack of infrastructure funding and lack of regional political leadership in Sildar. Thanks to the work of the Keris planning agency the port has become functional again and is currently exporting goods valued to 1.2 billion ALO per year.

As mayor for Keris he successfully oversaw programs aimed at rural farmers and poverty alleviation. He invested in novel programs that subsidized agricultural machinery production in the city. This program was widely praised throughout Sildar due to its positive effects on employment and modernization. His local success led him to run for Senator in the 16th district of Sildar. In the senate, Mr. Cadno has been a vocal critic of the lack of executive power in the Federal Republic and wants to increase the separation legislative and executive power. He is backed by a substantial minority of Senators who want to see the President act as a road-block to the overreaching power of the party. Among the general public he is seen as a unifying figure with a potential appeal for Alorian, Sildarian and Dundorfian voters. Keres as a city hosts a unique diversity seldom found in the western parts of the nation thanks to the city's history as an industrial hub. Alorian and Dundorfian workers both migrated to the predominantly Sildarian region to find work in the port. Mr. Cadno doesn't represent the same origins as most of the current political elite who stem from Llyn metropolitan region in Crentol. As an outsider, Mr. Cadno symbolizes a new political direction.
