Centre-right launch new party ahead of election
Former health minister Weinstam heads new political force

Image

After decades as a major political force in Dorvik, the Conservative and Reformist Alliance has dissolved. Former members have launched a new, reinvigorated party of the centre-right to boost popularity and public mood ahead of this summer's general election. The new party is to be known as: The People's Party for Freedom and Democracy. Party leadership describes the new party as a "modern party for a modern Dorvik." It identifies as a centre-right, conservative-liberal party which advocates the power of the individual. Like its predecessor, its supports low taxes and sensible government expenditure but appears more international and pro-AU than the Conservative and Reformist Alliance.

Since the announcement, the party's outlook for the upcoming election is looking brighter. It is now predicted the party will be between 24-66 seats compared with previous polls that indicated Assembly membership of the Conservatives would be reduced to under a dozen seats.

At the party's convention, the membership elected former health and social services minister Thomaz Weinstam as its interim leader. He served as health minister for thirteen years under the premiership of Zara Hoffmann, and identifies as an economically liberal conservative. All 32 former Conservative members of the Federal Assembly have defected to the new party, but at least 20 have announced they will not seek re-election as an assembly member in July. Included in this is the former Chancellor Zara Hoffmann who, in a Times interview, said "My time has been and gone, its time for a new generation of centre-right politicians to take centre stage."

GLP Loses 10% Votes and 64 Seats as AfP attains a Commanding Majority in the Council and Retains Presidency

The Excitement in the AfP Headquarters attained fever pitch when Exit polls revealed that the AfP Could win almost 310-330 Seats in the State Council and that President Holman may be on course to a historic first round victory. But GLP Members were not so ecstatic when the exit poll also revealed that the party could lose around 60 seats. The Exit Poll, proved to be accurate with the AfP winning 321 Seats and the Greens Also Losing 64 seats from 159 to 95.The Red Movement emerged as the Biggest Winner in the AfP,Rising from 57 to 143 Seats under the Leadership of Christopher Enkelmann, was only slightly behind the PdWS which emerged as the largest party with 144 Seats,Meanwhile the SDP rose from 22 to 47 seats and the Centirst Party Gained 1 seat to arrive at 34 Seats.

Meanwhile Mr.Peter Holman once again proved to be a Popular Leader among all sections of society with a historic first round victory with 55% of the votes,And the ADA Nominee trailing far behind at Less than 30%.

As for the GLP,It was Only Able to Retain Kordusia were Genelia Ortega was Re-elected to a Historic Third Term meanwhile the party lost both Largonia and Miktar with large swings against the GLP,The Party also lost almost all of its Rural Seats in the South,North and the Islands apparently due to the Parties Perceived "Pro Urban"and "Too Progressive"Polices on Social Issues. The Party met with backlash among worker communities due to the unpopular Reintroduction of VAT On Essential Goods.

The Greens,However Retained its Urban Base with the Party Retaining all its seats in Urban Areas such as Haldor,Schrudehofen and Inner Fairfax.

Greens Elect New Leader

August 4378:-
New GLP Leader and Outgoing Finance Minister Katrina Olsen:-

Image

After the Electoral Debacle the Party Endured Last Month,Chancellor Stella Schultz stepped down as GLP Leader and Federal Chancellory, but was asked to stay on as interim Chancellor until a New Cabinet Could Be Formed.

She also announced that the New Leader will be elected before August 1 and only two Candidates threw their hat in the ring,They were Katrina Olsen,The Outgoing Finance Minister,Who was the brain behind the introduction of the VAT on Essential Goods which cost the GLP a lot of votes in the last election,But she has Greater Approval Ratings than Outgoing Chancellor Stella Schultz and enjoys support among a Section of the public for her role in reducing the extremely large deficit which existed at the time of her appointment as finance minister. She has moved further to the left than she was as finance minister advocating Greater Spending and Regulations on Businesses

The Other Person who Joined the race was Adalbert Schneider,The Former Governor of Miktar who is also the leader of the Parties Right wing,She is a Staunch Federalist and also supported lower taxes and spending together with adopting a more Hard-line Policy towards Asylum Seekers,She said that she will also place the party in the "Mild Right" of Dorvish Politics. She was,Therefore Unpopular Among the Urban and Kordusian Wings of the GLP which together account for more than 60% of the GLP Membership and it was certain that Olsen would win and she unsurprisingly did.The Party Members were eligible to vote by post or in person at the Various GLP Offices.

Turnout was at 98% and Katrina Olsen won Kordusia,Westmark and Dorvan meanwhile Schneider Won Largonia and Miktar.Mrs.Olsen also won the Support of 65 of the parties 95 MPs and that of Mrs.Schultz as well.

The Final Results were:-

1.Katrina Olsen :-250,880:-64.0%
2.Adalbert Schneider:-141,120:-36.0%

Total:-392,000.

Katrina Olsen is also expected to become The New Chancellor as the Largest Party of the AfP,Rote Bewegung has reportedly expressed its intention to make her Chancellor. We will have to see if the AfP is truly able to live up to its promise of creating a Fairer Dorvik which "works for all"

Alliance for Progress Wins Majority, Holman Re-Elected // DNS

Image
Above: Alliance for Progress crowds cheer.

In an unexpected twist, the Alliance for Progress have won a majority in the Federal Assembly and President Holman was re-elected with over 50% of the vote in the first round. The results give the Alliance for Progress 321 seats, a large majority of 43 over the collective right. It's better than any expectations for the Alliance, and it's probably better than they ever could have imagined. In fact, the result makes it the most successful election night for the left in modern Dorvish history. The right was routed, with the New Dorvik alliance winning only 222 seats, which is actually down 12 seats from last election - again, against expectations. The HVV and VFD also lost seats, ending up at 42 and 14 seats respectively, a loss of 20 and 18 seats respectively. This makes a left-wing government now a certainty, with the Chancellor set to carry on in her position with a large cushion for the next election.

While the PWS won an extra 57 seats to land at 144 overall, the ADA lost 43 to land at their worst ever result - 36 seats. The ADA has done so badly it will now be rebranding as 'Awaken' and has totally changed its leadership. The DVP lost 20 seats and the DNP lost 6 seats, ending at 24 and 18 seats each respectively. This culminated to give New Dorvik it's disappointing 222. It makes it clear than despite the attempt to unite the right, the right has failed to unite enough to be competitive. Meanwhile, the Red Movement were able to gain a stunning 86 seats - 143 in total - and the Greens stood strong at 95, despite losing many seats. The SDP gained 27 seats to end up at 49, and the Centrist Party gained a single seat to end up at 34 overall. Over 30 million votes were cast for the Alliance for Progress, compared to just over 21 million votes for New Dorvik and under 4 million for the HVV.

The Presidential election was even less close than the assembly. Anthony Clark of the VFD ended up in fourth place, winning no states and no regions - under 5% of the vote and just over 2.9 million votes. Then in third was the third-time presidential candidate Hermann Hössler of the HVV who garnered no states but a few rural regions and 13% of the vote, over 7.7 million votes being cast for him. But the real loser of the presidential election was New Dorvik's Suzanne Reuter. Not even supported by the DVP, she got only 26.5% of the vote and a bit over 15.8 million votes. This was far below expectations, which had predicted a close race going to the second round. The disunity of the right was on clear show, with Holman storming to over 55% of the vote and over 33 million votes. His nearly-30%-margin over Reuter was way above exceptions, and solidifies his position as a very popular president.

The perfect result for the left was delivered by a number of key factors. Many centre-right voters stayed at home, believing that the VFD had no chance outside of an alliance but that New Dorvik and the HVV were too far-right. This led to lower-than-expected turnout, particularly in traditionally right-wing areas. This was a poor reflection on the New Dorvik alliance, and we are already seeing them turn to the centre in places in order to become electable again. A second key factor was the personal popularity of the President. A third key factor, and perhaps the most important, was that more centrist conservatives voted for the left due to the stability in the last government - which outshines the splintered right, which many view as filled with careerists and dogmatists. It will be interesting to see how the results hold up in the future, has Dorvik moved to the left?

Awakening On The Right? // DNS

Image
Above: Florence Kirsch and Jean-Claude Schlechter

With the historically poor results for the right, one right wing party at least has decided it needs to change tact in order to become more electable. The former ADA has rebranded as 'Awaken' after the election of Florence Kirsch-Schlechter and Jean-Claude Schlechter as the party leadership. Esther Fischer announced her resignation from national politics as soon as the results were in, ending a controversial two-decade career than included international conflict and far-right turmoil. However, now, Fischer's time is gone - by her own admission. So there was only one option left for the party: move to the left. The Schlechter couple moved firmly to become party leaders, and were voted in at 77% of the vote with no opposition except incumbent party leader August Schmitz and Herman Grosseburg - who were themselves disorganised and were denounced by key party figures.

The party is now set to be the most left-wing in the New Dorvik alliance, which could be a very politically expedient tactic in terms of regaining support. A big tent alliance would likely get more votes than the far-right alliance that currently exists. The Schlechter couple are both top-level university graduates and widely regarded as very intelligent people, contrasting with Fischer who never went into higher education. While the party remains right-leaning in terms of the economy, it is considerably more liberal in terms of social policy. For example, the party no longer seeks to abolish abortion. Instead, it seeks to allow abortion in the first trimester and for medical emergencies - but only to fund it for low-income earners and medical emergencies. This is just one example of many social policies that the couple have changed in relation to Fischer's old hard-line.

Awaken is also apparently 'willing to work in the spirit of bipartisanship', according to Florence Kirsch-Schlechter. This includes compromising between the right and left on key issues so as to 'keep Dorvik running'. This is one of many points of difference between the new and old party. Kirsch-Schlechter said that 'while we will remain members of New Dorvik, we will be calling for moderation towards the centre-right instead of the far-right'. Mrs Schlechter also said that she would be willing to work with the Alliance for Progress on areas of agreement, and would decide on who to support in the Presidential election when the time came to it. The other party leader, Mr Schlechter, has announced that Awaken will be supporting the government so as to 'provide stability'. It is unknown if Awaken's example will be heeded by the rest of the right or not, we will have to wait and see.

Kohlmann elected VfD leader

Image

Heiko Kohlmann, a university economics graduate, has been elected as leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, just ten months after being elected to the Federal Assembly. Thomaz Weinstam, who served as the party's interim leader chose not to seek re-election and later endorsed Kohlmann for the leadership of the party. New leader Kohlmann has called for the "realignment of Dorvish politics and a real, true agenda for change."

Mr Kohlmann is considered to be further right than his predecessor however when questioned on the prospect of an electoral alliance, he responded "Our party is an independent party of independent policies, we will not seek any electoral alliance with the right." Kohlmann is set to try and engage the youth in politics ahead of the election in three years time.

My aim as leader of the party is to engage young people in the debate of politics. It is their future, and it is of vital importance to get them to engage, get involved and vote! What our party should offer is an alternative. An alternative to high taxes, overspending and restriction of civil liberities. We must act as a party that works for everyone, leave no one behind.

Florence Kirsch-Schlechter: We Must Work Across The Divide // DNS

Image
Above: Florence Kirsch-Schlechter

Much has been said of the formation of Awaken from the ashes of the ADA - the irony. Condemned most strongly by the HVV and Red Movement, one of Awaken's co-leaders made it clear that respect from Awaken was reciprocal. "We have seen the HVV and Red Movement will not work outside of their bubble," she noted to reporters in a press conference today, "and so we obviously cannot work with them". This was the clearest yet indication of where the Awaken party sees itself on the political spectrum: not anywhere near communism or authoritarianism, instead it is firmly in the centre. "I have received congratulations for our change of leadership, and messages expressing that many members from many parties are looking forward to bipartisanship involving our parties," Kirsch-Schlechter told the reporters, "and we will always be willing to work with them, and look at their proposals on merit".

In a way, Mrs Schlechter's position on bipartisanship is much like the party's position on tariffs: no tariffs if not tariffs are imposed on us. That is to say, Awaken will be willing to work with anyone who accepts politics from alternative viewpoints. "The HVV and Red Movement love authoritarianism," she firmly stated, "no freedom of thought for you, old woman! no chance at rehabilitation for you, young man! They're equal opportunity oppressors, I'll give them that". Behind the veil of comedy, there is an undeniable truth. A lot of polarisation has occurred, at least partly down to authoritarianism on both sides. "It's not what Dorvik should be about," says Awaken's co-leader, "it's everything we should fight against, we are for progress and for aspiration - not for oppression". Perhaps this is a little hint that Awaken is hoping to dislodge the far-left, and form a unity cabinet with the Centrists and Green Liberals.

"Ideal, I'd say," is what Mrs Schlechter has to say about a centre-grounded coalition, "absolutely what we are aiming for, and we'd seek to involve everyone open to it". Asked if Schlechter was considering throwing away their membership of One Dorvik, Schlechter's response to journalists was surprising: "we remain supportive of capitalism and of free markets, we're just seeking accountability. You don't have to be one or the other." You might think this might be the most surprising thing for the 'leader of the new centrist party' to say, but it was perhaps a bit more surprising (and maybe a bit endearing) that Mrs Kirsch-Schlechter burst out laughing when asked if she felt that she had 'offended' the communist party. "Oh I criticised and offended them!", she bursts out, "well boo hoo, as I said, because parliament is for criticising ideas and debating them. As for offence, I've always talked my truth. No apologies do I have to give."

Peoples' Party for Freedom and Democracy storm to electoral success

Image

Heiko Kohlmann's People's Party for Freedom and Democracy has stormed to electoral success in the general election. The party has gone from the smallest party of just 14 seats to 205 seats to 220 seats in the most recent snap election. Kohlmann has declared his victory "as the biggest political earthquake to the political establishment ever."

However, it has emerged in recent days that coalition talks between the VfD, Zentrumspartei and Free Voters have broken down. The Zentrumspartei has chosen to form a coalition with the left, which leader Kohlmann "a disgrace, and betrayal to democracy." He has believed a centre-right coalition is the only the right way forward, and any other government formation with be seen as "illegitimate" and "a corruption of power" by the public and that there would be imaginable consequences.

He has called for members of the party and other like-minded people to protest and oppose this government.

President Holman Achieves Historic Victory; Centre Party Gains Seat

Image
President Holman's official portrait, which was released earlier last year.

Robert Holman secured an historic victory in last month's presidential election, after winning more than 95% of the vote in the first round. His only other competitor, Joachim Pfeil from the upstart Freie Wähler, garnered just over 4%. The landslide result means that Holman has become the first President to win five elections since Ernst Gerber in 4041 and the first to win five consecutive elections since Kuno Wurz in 4014. If, as expected, he completes a four-year term, he will become one of the longest-serving elected heads of state in Dorvish history; at 80 years-old, he is already one of the oldest. Speaking to DNS reporters following the election, the President had this to say:
I want to thank the Dorvish people for putting their faith in me once again; it is the greatest honour of all to be able to serve as your President for the next four years. These past few years have been particularly turbulent for our country….we have seen new parties come and go, and established parties dissolve. This election, however, has produced a clear, majority government that all party leaders should respect. I look forward to working with this new government on a range of issues.

In response to Heiko Kohlmann’s announcement that a coalition between the SDP, Rote Bewegung and Centre Party was ‘illegitimate’ and a ‘betrayal to democracy’, the President was clear:
It has long been established that the largest party does not necessarily form a government. I congratulate the VfD on their electoral success, but Mr. Kohlmann needs to recognise that his attempts to form a VfD-led government have been unsuccessful. The three-party coalition which I swore in this morning has as much legitimacy as any other democratically elected government in the world.

Mr. Kohlmann’s attempts to provoke protests across the country against the new government have failed to materialise. An opinion poll by DNS asking whether the new government was legitimate saw 89% of respondents reply ‘yes’. This response, along with a considerably less fractured parliament, will likely see the centre-left coalition complete its full four-year term.

Image
Centre Party Chairwoman Sabine Beck remains at Trade and Industry, but could a presidential bid be on the table?

Overall, the Centre Party had a successful election night; it’s vote share nearly doubled and it gained a respectable 29 seats. The party will now take four cabinet positions, up from three, in the new government. Unsurprisingly, Sabine Beck, the party’s Chairwoman, has decided to remain as Trade and Industry Minister, a position she has held almost continuously for nearly twelve years. Instead, Deputy Chairwoman Julia Weiss is promoted from the Justice Department to the highly-coveted Finance Ministry. Her stint as Justice Minister, coupled with her new post in one of the great offices of state, makes her a key favourite to take over the party’s leadership should Beck resign in the near future. Indeed, either woman could seek the party's presidential nomination given that this will likely be President Holman's last term. Elias Werner switches from Health to Education and Culture, while Alexander Kern enters cabinet for the first time as Minister for Justice.

Former Minister of Trade & Industry: Pragmatism Is Back // DNS

Image
Above: Petra Menager

With the rise of a communist, anarchist and fascist party within the boundaries of Dorvik, and only a fairly right-wing party there to battle the extremes, the centre has reformed around a little-known former Minister: Petra Menager. Menager was minister of Trade and Industry a few decades ago, when she was only in her twenties - the youngest cabinet member within centuries. Now Menager, who resigned form the FA when her party - Awaken - dissolved after a series of bad election results, is back to form a 'big tent' party in the spirit of the centuries of pragmatic dominance in Dorvish politics. Several decades ago, pragmatic politics had been at the national forefront for decades, but moves to the right within a highly concentrated field of centrist parties has diminished their power. With the recent death of Esther Fischer, former Foreign Minister and last of the right-wing pragmatic leadership lineage, the New Pragmatic Union has formed.

"Communism, anarchism, fascism: they kill, and they kill big" says Menager, an avowed centrist, who has made clear that none of the three extremist parties will "ever be allowed to enter cabinet if physically possible to prevent it". Dorvik has cast aside such extreme views for many millennia, but now it is back in full force and the centre is beginning to fight back. "I can work with like-minded parties, or even parties firmly on the left or right - but not the communists, the fascists, the anarchists", is what the former Minister has to say - indicating an extreme level of opposition to extremism, "we have such extreme parties rising out of desperation, it's time to combat the rout cause". Menager is from the southernmost parts of Miktar, an extremely right-wing part of the country and a very religious party at that. While tens of millions vote for the communists, many on the right are joining the new parties and the religious sect Children of the Spirit.

The New Pragmatic Union traces itself back 200 years, to the formation of the Pragmatic Party under Katarina Lehmann. Prominent Dorvish figures - like: Tirza Sommer, Emely Kruspe, Karen Kipping, Sally Gretchen, Katerina Schwartz and more recently Esther Fischer and Bernard Kilburg - trace themselves to this lineage. It has been undertaken in dozens of forms under variant leadership, between the centre-left and the far-right. However, it now seems like the party is firmly in the centre, under experienced and youthful leadership. "It's time to stop extremists dead in their tracks," Menager stated proudly, "anti-foreigner, anti-wealthy, anti-vulnerable - no prejudice is acceptable and all can be defeated through a simple debate". Will Menager be able to succeed in such an extreme environment, with three totally juxtaposed extremist sects in the FA? Only time will tell us.
