Alert Level Raised to DEFCON 3

In light of the recent conflict in Davostan, Prime Minister Maureen Udall has authorized the increase of the DEFCON alert system to LEVEL 3, signifying an increase in military readiness and heightened security measures. Reportedly acting with the support of Defense Minister Admiral John Berringer, the Prime Minister announced the change early this morning. Raising the alert is just the most recent response in a series of steps being taken to protect Hutori in these trying times.

With the rhetoric in Davostan becoming more and more reckless as the situation progresses, it is imperative that we take measures to protect ourselves. While are certainly not taking sides at this point, we will defend ourselves from any individual or group who seeks to harm us. The threats of nuclear weapons and mass killings spilling over into Hutori are more than enough to warrant this heightened alert.

When asked about raising the level to DEFCON 2, the Prime Minister declined to comment on the specific circumstances, and reiterated her main goal of taking the necessary measures to protect the people of Hutori and working with the Cabinet and advisers from the opposition to present a united front.

The return of the Ultranationalist Party

Vladimir Reznikov, 26, leader of the newly re-established Ultranationalist Party yesterday vowed to restore the monarchy and return Hutori to its former self. He had this to say on the new Federation; 'Our so called leaders have sold us out, they have prostituted us... Destroyed our economy... Our honor... Our blood has been spilled on our soil... My blood... On their hands... They are the invaders. All foreign corporations and their collaborators will leave Hutori immediately or suffer the consequences...

Agents of the nation's national intelligence service were last night said to be high alert due to the party's past terrorist involvement.

ULTRANATIONALIST LEADERSHIP DENY TERRORISM LINKS

The Ultranationalist leadership were last night said to be furious following recent allegations they are a terrorist organization. They claim their politicians are as clean and as honest as any of the politicians currently in Federal Congress. When approached, newly promoted Ultranationalist Deputy Leader Ismael Khan had this to say; "We challenge the media and newspapers to find one official member of our party's leadership with a past criminal record for violence. The Radical Alliance and the other ruling parties know the potential of how popular we may become and are in the midst of directing a campaign to turn Hutorians against us."

RA ACTIVIST MURDER WAS POLITICAL, POLICE SUSPECT!

Bekenial Police last night rounded up Ultranationalist supporters following the recent murder of a young Radical Alliance activist, who is believed to have been targeted following the Party's refusal to back the Ultranationalists should they win power in future elections. Image

James Dolan, 21 was in the midst of handing out political pamphlets ahead of the Party's annual recruitment drive in the City of Bekenial on friday night. When he was approached and attacked by drunken group of armed thugs in the city centre on Friday night. They are said to have began by shouting profanities, before one of them struck him with a knife, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest, stomach and neck, before bludgeoning him with a blunt instrument of some sort. He is said to have been dead, before any Medical Emergency Workers could reach him. ImageImage

Ultranationalist Chairman Anatoly Tutnev last night refused to comment. Image

The President condemns the murder of James Dolan

Image

President Lucas Hentze today responded to the horrific murder of a Radical Alliance youth activist, James Dolan.

"This is indeed a terrible crime and we will come to the bottom of this by using all means available. The cause behind this crime is non-human - everyone has the right to their own opinion and none should be murdered in cold blood for expressing theirs. I can assure you, citizens of Hutori that this crime won't go unpunished and everyone linked to this crime will be persecuted" Said the President at a press conference earlier this day.

Experts say that the murder of James Dolan is linked to the extremist groups on the right especially supporters and maybe members of the Ultranationalist Party. Action has been taken in the Federal Congress where both the left and the right has come with their own strategy on how to combat extremism and better protect civilians as well as prominent figures.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marie Khrushchev (left) has publicly condemned the acts of violence in Bekenial following the death of 21 year old political activist James Dolan by right-wing extremists. Madam Khrushchev is meeting with Senator Francois Neveu of the Democratic Socialist Party (right) in the city of Acton in the state of Adelia. Madam Khrushchev is quoted as saying "Such violence cannot be tolerated in the world. It especially cannot be tolerated on our own soil and in the streets of our capital. I will personally be meeting with the President in the morning to discuss this horrible event. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Mr. Dolan, and I am deeply saddened that this event has occurred during what has been a time of great political change for the better. It is my hope that better security measures can be put in place so that a tragedy such as this will never occur again."

His Holiness Pope Thomas XIV Condemns Violence in Hutori

His Holiness Pope Thomas XIV has condemned the violence that has occurred in The Federal Republic of Hutori. In a late night Papal address, His Holiness criticized the right-wing extremists responsible for the murder of 21 year old Political Activist James Dolan. The Holy Father called the extremists "cowards" and demanded they cooperate with the investigation into the incident. Further, Pope Thomas declared that "...any Catholic who has played a part in this incident, and doesn't confess to it immediately will be excommunicated from the Church, and from the Kingdom of Heaven."

His Holiness has also announced that he will be holding a special requiem mass tomorrow evening at the Apostolic Palace as a memorial for James Dolan, and the other victims of recent terrorist activity. The Pope has cordially invited President Lucas Hentze and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marie Khrushchev of the Federal Republic of Hutori to attend, and to hold a Papal Audience with the Holy Father to discuss affairs of state afterwards. The family of James Dolan has also been invited to attend as Honourary Guests of His Holiness.

POLICE FEAR A MAFIA WAR!

Telemonese Mafia families ripped apart by 127 arrests in the biggest ever undercover sting are expected to go to war with each other as they seek retribution.
Members of Bekenial's five major organised crime families - Greco, Mancini, Ceresani, Jaconelli and Canasta - were taken into custody last week, along with members of the Bocchichio gang from Axminster.

But while the police progresses its case against the mobsters, the Mafia families are thought to be busy conducting their own internal investigation to discover those who helped the police and many Hutorians fear this could result in a bloodbath.

INMATES IN SUCCESSFUL PRISON ESCAPE

Nineteen detainees, including alleged Revolutionary Ultranational Guard members, escape after reportedly feeding guards narcotics-laced dates. Thirteen detainees, including two men sentenced to life imprisonment as well as several alleged terrorist leaders, have escaped from a federal prison in central Hutori.
The group reportedly drugged guards and fellow inmates using narcotic-laced dates that put them to sleep before breaking out of Adelia state prison on the outskirts of the capital city of Bekenial. "They removed the ventilator in the bathroom and used blankets to jump from the opening," Peter Woodside, a deputy police chief, yesterday told Central News Agency. "Most of them are accused in accordance with article 4 [terrorism]. Investigations are ongoing." The group was made up of men allegedly belonging to the Revolutionary Ultranational Guard and the Greco Crime family. Police said on Saturday that prison officials and guards had been detained over the incident. The entire staff was being questioned. One of the escaped inmates had been captured, an official said. The detention facility is housed inside a fortified police compound in the Carlton. All major criminals are usually held there while they await to be tried in court. "We consider today's incident to be very clear negligence by the security forces," said Senator Peterson, alleging the prison break was an inside job.

Hutorian Intelligence Officers fear the fugitives may be hiding somewhere in Davostan. Their whereabouts remains strictly speculation at the moment.

ULTRANATIONALIST, LISA SHARPE SLAMS CLAIMS THE PEOPLE OF BEKENIAL ARE PAMPERED

The people of Bekenial's East End are many things, but they are not pampered
Poverty and social problems are endemic in Bekenial. Is this what being 'pampered' means?

There is no echo of steel, no molten metal being fired, no forgings or armaments being hammered out in what was once the largest steelworks in Macon. Here on its site, the only clanking to be heard is the sound of zimmer frames hitting the tiles on a shopping centre floor.

With its furnaces drawing in a workforce from across the country, the Forge was the largest employer in the city. Now all that remains is the nomenclature, giving title to a down-at-heel shopping centre, a place that can often seem like a petri dish of everything that ails the East End of Bekenial.

Look at some of the faces here and you will see the ravages of ill health, smoking, alcohol abuse, poor diet, a lack of sunshine and a life lived without much hope. Here people aimlessly wander, hoping to fill empty days with a wee blether, a free heat and a cheap cup of tea.

It is an oft-remarked fact that the average life expectancy at birth for men round these parts is 68.1 years, five years lower than the Hutorian average. And it would be a rare thing indeed for the East End man to bid his farewell to this mortal coil on a sedan chair.

So to hear Tycoon Peter Allan describing this life as "pampered" would no doubt leave the poor old soul burling in his grave – and shouting that at least his early death meant one less demand on the public purse.

Allan, one of Macon's first self-made billionaires – whose riches were made selling training shoes to the nation – has declared that his fellow Hutorians are "pampered, dependent people who expect what others strive and graft hard for".

This was closely followed by a rival paper's description of the East End of Bekenial as the "benefits capital" of the Hutori, with almost nine out of 10 people "on welfare". It states: "Astonishing figures from the Government reveal that 85% of working age adults in the in the city's impoverished east end, are claiming some kind of welfare payment."

But a closer analysis of the DWP statistics for Hillhead (not actually in the Bekenial East constituency) shows that while high at 44.1% compared with the national average of 14.8%, the total number of claimants was 1,480, and that number included those on disability and incapacity benefit and bereavement and carers allowance. People on employment and support allowance are lumped in there too.

When I think of the East End, other statistics, published by the Bekenial Centre for Population Health spring to mind.

Approximately 1,960 patients are admitted to hospital each year for alcohol-related or attributable causes, with 420 deaths due to alcohol over the past five years. There were 800 new cancer cases and 1,400 heart disease patients admitted to hospital last year.

Just under a third of the population are classed as income-deprived. In the last year, 490 serious assaults were recorded, as well as more than 1,600 domestic abuse cases. The rate of low birth-weight babies is 62% above the Hutorian average and teenage pregnancies are 42% above. Almost 16,000 people, out of a population of around 124,000, are estimated to be on prescription drugs for depression.

So much for pampering.

I grew up in the East End of Bekenial and my family have lived there for generations (almost all of them working all their lives). This is a landscape far removed from the glossy designer stores of the city centre's style mile or the coffee bars and delis of Byres Road in the East End. Here, the clutter of charity and pound shops that shoulder the pavements speak their own story. In the off-sales, wine is sold from behind bars or bulletproof glass and the Aston branch of Motco rarely stocks free-range chicken since "there's not much call for it round here".

Walk these streets and you can see that gross inequalities have hammered hard into the souls of people who are disenfranchised and ignored. Their housing stock has been improved and overhauled but their lives do not thus have more meaning. Poverty and social problems are still endemic. A local minister recently told me that day by day things were only getting worse.

Many are trapped in a cycle of dependency and do become disempowered. One rival politician, told me: "I don't want to deny there's a problem but we need to have a much deeper and profound solution. It's too simple just to attack recipients of welfare. We need to help people get back on their feet."

Freezing child benefit means children living in Bekenial's East End have even less of a chance of being pampered. And given their chance in life, they can most likely only ever dream of paying rockstars to play at their 40th birthday – unlike Peter Allan.
