Ataraxia Divided

Postby TheCollectivist » Fri May 25, 2018 3:50 pm

September 4398

A labour and social dispute has arose in the Ataraxian Confederation. The event follows Ambassador Pete Thompsett's succession and subsequent euthanasia. System programmer Guus Sims is now the incumbent Ataraxian ambassador. According to Ataraxian insiders, the dispute is not related to the recent ambassadorial succession, but rather a recent event involving the deportation of two prominent engineers for an "intimacy violation".

In response to the incident two labour unions have sprung up. The Ataraxian Committee for Progress (ACP) was the first and is being led by a group of social progressives, mainly scientists, engineers, and physicians. The Ataraxian Purity Front (APF) was the second and is being led by a group of conservatives and hardliners from a variety of occupational backgrounds.

Under the Ataraxian Constitution, sexual activity and reproduction is strictly prohibited, with the latter being punishable by death. No pregnancies have ever occurred in the Ataraxian Confederation as all residents are rendered infertile upon their conversion into Ataraxian life. Since its founding in January 4290 more than a century ago, sexual repression has never been directly challenged. Many residents cited the antisexual and antinatalist practices as being appealing. This however has slowly begun to change as the confederation has attracted more mainstream and highly educated applicants. Now under the ACP, many of these newer Ataraxians are demanding reforms.

Normally arguing for sexuality or reproduction would be illegal under Ataraxian law, but this time it is being argued from a scientific perspective. Under the Ataraxian Constitution, matters of science are not up for debate, but rather evidence. The ACP has allegedly gathered numerous scientific studies supporting the inclusion of sexual activity and reproduction in society. The APF however says that more than a hundred years of social stability proves the system works. Since this dispute is outside of normal Ataraxian politics given that it involves independent labour unions, debates have been unofficial and unorthodoxly fierce. Ataraxian law permits the formation of labour unions, although this is the first time in Ataraxian history that such organizations have formed independent of the Ataraxian government.

Ambassador Guus Sims was asked what the Ataraxian Council's position is on this dispute:

Sims wrote:This is between two independent labour unions, the Council has nothing to say on this at this time.

ROUSSEAU RETIRES

Image
Rousseau was given time to thank everyone during his last day as an MP. He retires after more than 30 years.

After more than 30 years, Pascale Rousseau has announced that he is retiring from politics. First elected in 4368, Rousseau served as a the deputy leader of the Conservative Party under Chancellor Aaron Scheer. After Scheer's retirement, Rousseau would succeed him as leader, and lead the way to forming the Royalist Party. Rousseau would be elected the first leader of the Royalist Party and quickly became Chancellor. His leadership helped form a successful, and ongoing, alliance with the New Liberal Party.

During his last day in the House of Parliament, the Speaker allowed Rousseau time to give a farewell speech.

"Wow. When I entered politics more than 3 decades ago, I never could have dreamed of the career I have had. The people of Anslem Centre trusted me to represent them in this house, which is something I have never taken for granted. I must first thank all of my constituents, without them, I would not be standing in this house today. Next, I must thank the Conservative Party, who trusted me as their leader before the formation of the Royalist Party. I must also thank them for allowing me the honor to represent them as their presidential candidate in 4372. The next thank you must go to the Right Honorable Aaron Scheer. It was his guidance and leadership that allowed me to succeed him after his retirement. Aaron taught me how to be a leader, and without him, I would never have been able to lead this party and become Chancellor of Hutori. Being Chancellor is an absolute honor and privilege and I wish Chancellor Graham the best of luck. I must also thank the leader of the New Liberal Party for being such an extraordinary ally. Our parties have been able to do many great things for Hutori in the last decade and none of it would have been possible without him. Thank you to everyone in this house for representing your constituents and ensuring that their voices are being heard. While we may not all agree on policy, we share the common goal of creating a better Hutori."

With Rousseau Stepping down, a leadership election will be held in August to decide who will succeed him. So far 2 candidates have put their names forward, Brett Martin and Caroline Stewart, the Chairman and Chairwoman of each caucus. Martin is the early favorite, but it appears to be a close race.

Martin Gains Huge Endorsement

Image
Former Tory leader and Chancellor of Hutori, Aaron Scheer announces his endorsement of Brett Martin as next Royalist Leader

Finally some good news for the Martin camp today as former Chancellor and leader of the Conservative Party, Aaron Scheer announced today that he is endorsing Martin in his bid to become the next leader of the Royalist Party. Leading up to this major announcement, there was rumored to be uncertainty over Martin's support within the Conservative wing of the Party. It was reported that Martin was believed to not be conservative enough for their liking. After Scheer's endorsement, a lot could change.

"I have watched for more than a decade now as Brett has proven himself as a true leader within the Conservative Caucus. Now that it is time for the Royalist Party to select a new leader, I believe it is time for Brett to lead the entire party." ~Aaron Scheer

MARTIN NAMED ROYALIST LEADER

Image
Martin gives victory speech after being named leader of the Royalist Party

At the Royalist Party Leadership Convention 4402, in beautiful Port Prosperity, Brett Martin was named the party's successor to Pascale Rousseau. Martin, at 35 years old, already has quite the resume. He served as finance minister from 4392 until 4400, was named Conservative Caucus Chairman for a brief time in the early 4290s, was put back into the position when Rousseau retired, and is now the leader of the Royalist Party. A point system was used, giving each party member a vote, and each province was worth a maximum of 100 points so that each province would have an equal vote share. The percentage of the vote share each candidate received was rounded to the nearest whole number, and that was the number of points given to each candidate. A candidate needed 251 points to win the leadership, and Martin earned 294. His path to victory went through the most Conservative areas of Hutori, with him earning 89 points in Adelia, and 76 points in Roccato. Falristan was a deadlock, with each candidate taking 50 points, while while Lagard and Kenai went to Progressive candidate Caroline Stewart taking 58 and 63 points in each of those provinces.

There was some good news for Stewart, with the party announcing that they would be running a presidential candidate in 4405, after backing incumbent president Constance Okafor in each of the last 3 elections. It was also announced that Stewart would be that candidate.

Recreational Cannabis Set to Become Legal

Image
Royalist leader Brett Martin answers questions following the passage of Bill R-7 which will legalize recreational cannabis.

As of July 1, 4309, Hutorians will be able to legally purchase recreational cannabis. The passage of Bill R-7 is a huge accomplishment for the Royalist Party, with an election just months away. Polls had shown a slight dip in support for the Royalists over the last year, but with the passage of Bill R-7, the Royalists have shot up and there is talk that Brett Martin could very well become the next Chancellor.

With a year to prepare for the legalization, provincial governments are already hard at work setting their own provincial regulations. All provinces are expected to stick with the legal age of 18, though some provinces are considering stronger penalties for underage possession and for impaired driving. We spoke with the Premier of Kenai, Johnathon McNeil about his priorities when it comes to creating legislation for legal cannabis.

Image

"Our first and foremost priority in Kenai is to ensure that recreational cannabis stays out of the hands of our children. The federal government has given us a mandate, and we intend to come through on it. We will be implementing even stricter penalties for impaired driving and we will be adding a penalty for distributing cannabis to a minor, which is something all of our provincial partners have agreed to do as well. As for the legal age being 18, that is what we are likely looking at, but we will be hearing more from experts in the coming weeks and months and will make an official decision at a later date."

Ataraxians Reform into the Scientian Enclave

Postby TheCollectivist » Wed Jun 20, 2018 3:29 pm

September 4411

Following more than a decade of internal debate in the Ataraxian Confederation, the Ataraxian Council called for a referendum. The debate was between two labour unions: the Ataraxian Committee for Progress (ACP) and the Ataraxian Purity Front (AFP). With reproduction and sexuality illegal in the confederation, the ACP wanted change, but the AFP wanted the status-quo to remain.

The Ataraxians had a problem though, the Ataraxian Constitution was unsure of how to deal with this issue. Technically, antinatalism and antisexualism was enshrined in the constitution, but so was a commitment to scientific evidence. Ironically the forces of science and tradition even among Ataraxians collide.

The ACP argued that scientific evidence supports the inclusion of sexuality in society and that with careful planning people can be bred ethically.

ACP spokesperson wrote:Scientific evidence shows that sexual behaviour when conducted safely and with consent is a healthy part of society. Furthermore, the prohibition on reproduction on the basis of preventing suffering rejects that most people who are born are thankful to be and that many women are happy to be mothers. It further neglects the fact that without reproduction humans would not reach the technological state where we are today. With planned reproduction and carefully regulated sexual behaviour, we can expand the scope of our scientific research and attract more human resources.

The AFP argued that more than a century of social stability proves that the current practices work.

AFP spokesperson wrote:More than a century of equality between the sexes and low crime rates proves that our current system works. Sexuality brings nothing, but unnecessary risk, impulsive relationships, and leads to degeneracy. Reproduction forcefully brings a being into life without their consent. It is irrelevant that they may consent to it afterwards.

The Ataraxian Council decided to take a neutral stance on the issue and instead mandated the first and last public referendum in the Ataraxian Confederation. The referendum asked the following:

Ataraxian Referendum wrote:Should a transitional committee of technocrats reform the Ataraxian Confederation into a society that functions solely to improve living standards and quality of life for all sentient beings using the scientific method?

Voting was conducted using an open ballot system to ensure accountability. The results were nearly unanimous.

90% of residents participated in the vote.
92% voted in favour.
8% voted against.

The Ataraxian Council then formed a transitional committee with former Ataraxian Ambassador Norbert Lowell as its temporary leader. According to voting records, Lowell voted in favour of the referendum. Near the end of the month, the committee announced the renaming of the Ataraxian Confederation into the Scientian Enclave (Scientia for short). They also announced the creation of Hutorians for Science (HfS), a political party that will represent both Scientian interests and scientific consensus. According to Lowell, HfS will seek solutions utilizing evidence and technology. HfS will be staffed by outsiders, although their policies will remain subordinate to the Scientians. Funding will come from either public funds, donations, and or the Scientians themselves depending on Hutorian law.

Lowell wrote:Parties today are often restrained by their loyalty to the left, the right, or the centre. All we care about are results. The methods are to be determined by what works and what doesn't. Overall the goal is to improve standard of living and quality of life for everyone no matter their economic or social background.
