Lib Dem Leader Resigns, New Leader Emerges

Frank Plowman, the Leader of the Opposition, has resigned from front line politics after several years as Liberal Democrat Leader. Mr Plowman served in the previous governments of Lord Norton. Sadly for Mr Plowman, there has been talk of a coup after successive election defeats at the hands of the conservatives. As is customary for this situation with the Libdems, a leadership election was immediately called, and this was surprisingly won by Rt Hon Hector James MP, formerly of the Environment and Tourism Ministry. Mr James has not been a high profile member of the Government, but it his ideas on the economy are more in line with the conservatives, which means that there may be possibility of some co-operation.

HUTORI WITHDRAWS FROM MACON UNION

In a unanimous vote in the Hutorian House of Parliament, the elected MP's of Hutori have voted to withdraw from the Macon Union.

http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=323029

The Prime Minister of Hutori also made a startling revelation that the Macon Union has threatened war against Hutori should they leave the Macon Union. Hutorian parties have reacted with fury condemning the threats. Many commentators outside of Macon have already predicted the outbreak of war on the continent of Macon if Hutorian withdrawal went ahead and Telamon has begun the first steps of moving to war.

Can War Be Avoided?
An Editorial by Rt. Hon. Adele Weiterhaußen MP.

Recent actions taken by the Government of Hutori, and belligerent members of the Macon Union have left many people wondering if there will be a war. Hutori was a founding member of the Union, and the Hutorian Conservative Party one of the treaty's writers. The Union was founded to increase participation and unity among the nations of the continent of Macon, in the north.

This is not the first Macon Union that Hutori has been a part of. Hutori joined the First Macon Union back in the 2300's, though questions over centralization caused Hutori to leave in 2391. From our history books, we can see that there was a major war fought, which resulted in the blockade of Hutori for a period of time. Though the war caused little physical damage to the nation, it left the people wary of joining another such organization for some time.

This most recent Macon Union was officially drafted in 3130 by the current Governing Party of Telamon. Hutori ratified the treaty, and joined the Union in 3134. Recent attempts by Telamon and other nations to use Hutori troops to further their plans for expansion caused much discussion in the Hutori Parliament over the issue, to the point where the Hutorian Conservative Party proposed that Hutori withdraw in 3141. This led to much argument within Parliament over the sudden nature of the withdrawal from the Union, but in the end the Withdrawal was passed with all elected parties voting in favor of such a measure.

The Response from the Macon Union has been quite varied, with the President of Keymon suggesting that the Union impose sanctions upon Hutori for its "sudden and unexplained withdrawal". This is idiocy. Hutori is simply defending it's interests from other nations, the government feels that the Union is not right for Hutori. National sovereignty demands that the Union allow Hutori to withdraw, without consequences. The Keymoni President also called upon the Macon Union to mobilize, another warmongering move.

A more worrying statement from the Representative of Telamon to the Union is that they expect Hutori to re-join. Not because of diplomatic negotiations but because of, and I quote, "...plans that i made up with my sec of defence that there will be peace between our countries and i am confident that they would re-enter." This is a statement which emphasizes Telamon's desire to use Hutori for its gains. It is in essence saying that Hutori should rejoin because of threat of war, rather than real reasons and benefits for Hutori.

Telamon has also said that "If tensions continue to increase a military build-up along with sanctions will be wise but as of now I [The Delegate from Telamon to the Union] do not see a need." This is a hypocritical statement. Hutori is not causing tensions to rise. It is the Union members, specifically Telamon and Keymon which are causing tensions to rise. They are threatening war for Hutori's decision to ensure that its national sovereignty will not be infringed upon by expansionist and imperialistic foreigners.

It is the time to say here, that I will never support the Union again. To my dying day I, as leader of the Imperial Democrats, will ensure that Hutori is never controlled by imperialistic foreigners who call for greater participation for their gains.

War can be avoided, if the Union does not escalate the situation. So far however, they have been doing so. Hutori is keen on avoiding war. The Union apparently is not. Let it be said that if there is war, it will not be Hutori to blame.

PM GIVES RADIO INTERVIEW

Today the Hutorian Prime Minister Viscount Townsend has given an exclusive interview to Bekenial District Radio. The PM was speaking on the channels political hour and there was really only one issue that people seemed interested in. Obviously that was the issue that has been dominating world and Hutorian new - the withdrawal from the Macon Union. Expert political commentator Anton Coles was dishing out the questions to the Prime Minister and here's how that interview went;

AC : "Well firstly i would like to welcome the Prime Minister to the station and i thank him for giving us the time to be here today. Obviously the major talking point is the Hutorian withdrawal from the Macon Union and the threats received by Union members. What do you make of the whole situation?"

VT : "I think the threats made by the Telamonese and especially Keymoni politicians have no place in todays world. It was clear to us that the Hutorian Parliament nor the people of Hutori supported the Macon Union so we withdrew our membership. It was an issue for Hutori to deal with and we will not be part of the Telamonese plans to form a new Imperial power in the name of the Macon Union."

AC : "Well you say "imperial power" but the Macon Union has yet to go to war with anywhere? Is this not a more assumption on your part than factual?"

VT : "No. There was hard evidence that the Davostani government offered more than Davostani troops to participate in the Third Darnussian Civil War. Now under the terms of the treaty we would have had to commit Hutorian soldiers to such a conflict. It is still unclear the reasoning behind the actions of the Davostani government but we believe they wished to conquer a flailing state in Darnussia/Narikaton and try and colonise it in the name of the Macon Union. Hutori had no interest in this or any reason to become interested in this. I believed that we should not be sending our armed forces to a state to die in battle over issues that do not concern us."

AC : "Well i can understand your reasoning behind that as far as the issue with the Davostanis. However most of the critism was aimed in the direction of the Telamonese. I have read over the debates from the Act of Parliament concerning the withdrawal of the Macon Union and you claim Telamon was the real instigator behind the Macon Unions....plans for colonialism."

VT : "Well i think it was very clear it was the Telamonese behind it all. They were the ones who pushed for a Macon Union Pact in the first place. Once they got it they tried to install themselves as "President" despite there being no consultation with other member states or any provision in the actual Macon Union treaty itself. I think they saw the Macon Union as a way to get Telamonese interests at the forefront and they could twist the pact to achieve its own ends primarily - with other member states a distant second."

AC : "Looking back over the whole issue...do you not think it could have been resolved....well in a more...civil manner?"

VT : "To be honest Anton, it started out a civil parliamentary debate between Hutorian political parties. We set out with our coalition partners unconvinced but they listened to our reasoning and accepted them as legitimate. It only descended into unpleasentries once the Telamonese and especially Keymoni members decided to intervene in what was supposed to be a strictly Hutorian debate. Obviously i wished it had gone smoother but it was clear that Telamon and Keymon would simply not accept the sovereign will of the Hutorian people and that is very sad on their part."

AC : "A lack of civil discussion soon became threats of war....how did you take that and what do you say to the listeners who are worried at the prospect of war?"

VT : "Once the Keymoni member threatened war if we left the Macon Union we were appalled. Not only do they not respect Hutorian sovereignty but they now will go to war because we democratically chose to leave their bloc? I was amazed at that. I had to share the threats with the House of Parliament given the massive implications they could have and i was pleased with all members of the House who gave their support to the Hutorian state rather than side with the Union. It almost made the Union fade into insignificance whenever our national security was threatened. What can i say to the Hutorian people? I can tell them this. We will do all we can to avoid a pointless struggle with the Macon Union. I hope the Keymonis and Telamonese can be reasonable and just accept the will of the Hutorian people. I do not want a war, Hutori does not want a war and most important of all - the Hutorian people do not want a war."

AC : "Prime Minister, i thank you for taking the time to speak to us and this has been a very interesting chat."

VT : "Thank you Anton."

AC : "With the serious discussion out of the way we can return to the music!"

Lib Dem Leader Interview

Following the Prime Minister's interview with Bekenial District Radio last week, the Leader of the Opposition Hector James sat in the hot seat in the second part of an ongoing series in political hour. The Leader of the Opposition was quizzed by Anton Coles on similar issues to the PM, but was also asked about the future of the Lib Dems.

AC: "Welcome to political hour. This week we have our second guest, the Leader of the Opposition, the Rt Hon Hector James. So Mr James..."

HJ: "Please just call me Hector."

AC: "Ok, Hector, naturally I will first turn our attention to the recent crisis with the Macon Union. What is your take on the situation?"

HJ: "Well obviously I am concerned about the grave threats made against our sovereignty. Initially I was trying to defend our membership, but that position became untenable once threats were made inside our Parliament by a representative of Keymon."

AC: "So do you agree with the Prime Minister's views about Macon Imperialism?"

HJ: "I initially thought the PM was exagerrating the danger, and to be honest there was none in the beginning. However, as this has developed, it is clear that there are anti-Hutorian sentiments within the Union, and the Union itself lacks the specific direction to rule out expansion by force."

AC: "So if there were some fundamental changes to the Union, would you favour a re-admission?"

HJ: "The decision to re-enter must be right for Hutori, and the conditions must be in our interests. At the moment the Union is rather vague in its goals, and it is clear that some member states have ambitions which do not fit in with Hutorian interests."

AC: "Moving on from the Macon Union, you are relatively new in your leadership. Where do you see the Liberal Democrats going from here?"

HJ: "Well it is unfortunate that Frank was not our leader in another time, he may have done exceedingly well. However, what the people need from us now is an energetic leadership. No offence to the PM, but it seems to me that it's the same old tired policies from his predecessor. I am here to re-invigorate my party. What does that mean for our voters? Well there will be less resistance to Privatisation for a start, and there will be a shift towards a localised system of governance. What I really wish to see is a system of regional Governments and Parliaments, each with the power to make their own decisions on things like education."

AC: "In terms of governance, what is your personal stance on the Monarchy?"

HJ: “I favour keeping it, so long as that is what the people want. If there came a time when the King or his predecessor became unpopular, I could be persuaded to table a bill to review the position of the King. As it is, I think the King is doing a great job representing us across Terra. I have recently been in communication with the Prime Minister about the King having a secondary Palace in the Capital for Official state functions. Sadly the PM and the Government disagree with me on this one. So there will be no change under a Conservative Government.”

AC: “Finally, how are you finding it being the Leader of the Opposition?”

HJ: “well I don’t intend staying on that side of the House if that’s what you mean. I was left a party which has suffered in recent elections, and I have had a very short time to try and turn that around. There is an election just round the corner, and I am hopeful that we could make some good gains this time. What will be important will be how other parties perform. So if the HCP retains its position as largest party, and their coalition partners also perform well, we will probably stay in Opposition. That said, there are new factors to consider since the last election, so we have the Progressive Conservatives to consider. Where will their allegiance lie? I hope that I can talk with the leadership and form a progressive government. "

AC: “Thank you for your time Hector. Next week we hope to have another interview with another Party Leader, to continue our series in political hour. Now for a song, chosen by our guest.”

An Interview with the Imperial Democratic Leader

As part of our political coverage here at the Bekenial Dispatch, we have been interviewing the party leaders of Hutori. Two weeks ago we kick-started the program with the Prime Minister (HCP) and last week we met with the Leader of the Opposition (Liberal Democrat). Today our expert political commentator, Anton Coles, meets with the elusive Adele Weiterhaußen, the Female Leader of the Imperial Democrats.

AC: "This is Political Hour. As part of our ongoing series on Hutorian Politics we have been interviewing the leaders of the prominent parties of the nation. This week we meet with Mrs. Adele Weiterhaußen, who is the leader of the junior coalition partners. How do you feel about the recent turn of events, Mrs. Weiterhaußen?"

AW: "The recent situation with the Macon Union has caused much concern in the capital, as we never expected to be threatened to the level that we were."

AC: "Threatened? Could you elaborate?"

AW: "Keymon suggested open war with Hutori if we withdrew from the Union. While they may say that there statements were defensive, the fact points out that they were anything but. Hutori never threatened any of the Macon Union member states, and we still have not. They called for sanctions against Hutori if we withdrew, when we were simply defending our national sovereignty. And this is only one of the Macon Union members..."

AC: "What do you mean only one? There were more?"

AW: "Yes. While Telamon never directly threatened Hutori, I interpreted their comments at a recent Macon Union meeting to be threatening. They said that Hutori would rejoin the Union because of plans that the leader of Telamon drew up with his Secretary of Defense. While to some this may seem like Telamon pushes for a peaceful solution, which is what they have been saying across the airwaves recently, I interpret it as saying that Telamon threatens war if we do not join. Why would a leader mention his Secretary of Defense in a statement calling for peace?"

AC: "If this issue just settles down, would you favor joining once more?"

AW: "Right now I do not believe that it would be prudent, in the best interest of Hutori to rejoin the Union. While the Union has not yet called for militaristic expansion, or the use of Hutorian troops in foreign wars, the treaty is vague enough such that it can happen. Unless the treaty is more specific on the matter I would have to say that Hutori should remain out of the Union."

AC: "Now moving onto other issues, what is your view on the last decade or so in power?"

AW: "The last decade has shown that the voters of the nation can entrust a Conservative Government with power, and be happy with such a government. We came to power in 3137 after about a decade and a half of Liberal governments. We won a reelection about 3 years ago in 3141 which saw a slight decrease in HCP seats, but a sizable increase in our (ID) seat count. I do believe that the voters are happy with the government as of now."

AC: "Do you believe that the government's re-election chances are good, at the current moment? We are less than a year away from the next elections, and campaigning should be starting soon."

AW: "I feel that this government has done much good in, and for the country. I believe that the voters will vindicate this view of mine, and allow the current coalition to govern for four more years."

AC: "With our time almost running out, I thank you for speaking with us tonight and look forward to our next meeting."

AW: "Thank you. Its been a pleasure to be here."

Election 3145 Coverage: Analysis

Politicians accross the board will be scratching their heads following the announcement of the election results. As the results came in, it became clear that the HCP and their Coalition allies the Imperial Democrats recieved quite a blow in the latest poll. All parties lost ground to the newly formed Progressive Conservatives. The biggest loss was experienced by the HCP, losing 60 seats, whilst the ID's lost 42. The Liberal Democrats lost 22 seats, and the Left Socialist Party lost 16 seats.

Lib Dem leader Hector James shared his view as the votes were coming in.
It is clear that the electorate have spoken against the policies of the HCP-ID Government. Years of budget cuts and privatisation have clearly not impressed the voters, and I believe that what will emerge from this result is a Progressive Coalition. I would welcome the chance to work with the PCP on bettering Hutori, and providing a Government that the people actually want.

PCP-LIBDEM Coalition Formed

The new Prime Minister Winston Hadley announced today that his party are to enter Government with the Liberal Democrats, with the expectation that Hector James will become Deputy Prime Minister. This comes as negotiations between the PCP and the HCP broke down, leaving the Liberals as the PCP's best option to form a coalition. Though the parties differ with some issues, they share many ideas on how to reform Hutori.

Election Results Are In; Disappointing Night for the Conservatives
The Government retained the majority of the seats in Parliament

Image

The Results for the May 3149 General elections are now in. The Government retained the majority, capturing or holding a total of 266 seats across the nation. The Opposition made up of the ID and the HCP was aiming for the magic number of 65, the number of seats required to seize the Prime Ministership and the majority. Unfortunately for them, poorer than expected results in several key districts failed to provide sufficient gains for them to remove the Government from power. The Government now controls 266 seats, 30 seats more than previously. The Opposition made gains of about 6 to 8 seats.

Adele Weiterhaußen of the Imperial Democrats said in a Speech in Adelia that;
The public has shown us that it is not ready for our rule. Our party failed to campaign in a manner which would convince enough voters that we were the best for the nation, and it is now time for the Imperial Democrats to face the reality that they will spend yet another term out of power. We thought we could make gains on seats vacated by the now defunct Left Socialist Party, these gains never materialized to a level we needed. I will be reconsidering my position as head of this party as a result, and will make an announcement in the near future.

Coalition Government to debate the Monarchy

The last election saw the Liberal Democrats win a large number of seats, analysts put this down to the demise of their former coalition partners. New Prime Minister, Hector James served in the last Government as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The Prime Minister had promised to open up the media and allow free speech on all issues, most notably the Monarchy. Whilst the Liberal Democrats have no official position on the monarchy, former leaders have spoken in favour of retaining it. However, should the Liberal Democrat's Media Bill pass, there is a real possibility that we could see a challenge to the monarchy, or at least it's position as the supreme authority in the land.

Also on the agenda for this Parliament is a discussion of the Macon Union which Hutori sensationally withdrew from after percieved threats from some members. The PM is known to favour a phased return to the Union, based on conditions to be outlined by the Government.

Hutori News Agency to Bid for Alduria and Vonarburg News Press

The HNA, owner of the Bekenial Dispatch (the most popular Hutorian Newspaper) and the successful Serene TV and Radio Network (STRN), is to bid for the ownership of the AVNP following the recent announcement of bankruptcy. If successful, the HNA would be making it's first such expansion into the international news market with the potential for further expansion. It is thought that the HNA would make minimal changes to the AVNP, but may suggest new leadership for the organisation and impose targets to cut costs. The HNA would be able to fund a marketing campaign, as well as an expansion of existing products.

The takeover would require support from the Hutorian Government as well as from the shareholders of the HNA and the AVNP.
