Forward Hutori Party Chair Stands Down

June 3223

Image

Two weeks ago Frank Cousin MP declared his intention to stand down as party Chair of the Forward Hutori party, after 6 years in the role. Reports suggest that Mr Cousin decided to stand down in order to focus on his cabinet position as secretary of state for Food and Agriculture.

In a statement, Mr Cousin signalled his regret at leaving the post:

It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of this party for the last 6 years, helping to shape party policy and meeting with a variety of brilliant people who serve our movement. I wish my successor well and hope they will continue to work towards our plan for a better and more pluralistic politics

Some have suggested that Mr Cousin, seen as the most prominent right winger in the party, has grown disillusioned with the party's current leadership due to a lurch to the left following the formation of the rainbow coalition between the FHP, SP and HLP. One disgruntled backbencher has been quoted as saying "The right of this party is being pissed on and I've about had enough of toeing the left wing party line".

A spokesman for Mr Cousin said in response to the suggestions that this was nonsense- "I'd take what you read in the papers with a pinch of salt. Frank has a fantastic relationship with John Klugg, and they remain in constant contact as cabinet colleagues and friends."

It has been suggested by an inside source that Cousin wants to distance himself from the party leadership in order to prepare for a potential leadership challenge should the results be poor at the next general election. Cousin has in the past vocally opposed tax increases proposed by the Chancellor and was seen as fundamental in Klugg's decision to initially oppose a recent budget before an unexpected u-turn.

BUSINESS OWNERS MEET TO DISCUSS FUTURE

It is today reported that fifteen of top Hutorian business owners have met in the Capital to discuss their future in Hutori. It is believed the business owners are furious with the left-wing government for increasing corporation tax, sales taxes and income taxes. The fifteen prominent business owners, owners of banks, energy companies, pharmaceutical companies employ somewhere in the region of two hundred thousand Hutorians. If these companies decide to leave, all these employees will be made redundant.

It is under the proposed Bills which companies have taken issue with;

The companies are demanding that corporation tax is reduced to 15%, before they start having to pass tax rises onto consumers and employees.

Coalition seeks new mandate

June 3223

Image
Prime Minister Scargill at a rally in Lagard.

Today the so-called 'Rainbow Coalition' has called an early election to decide who shall rule Hutori for the next four years. This despite the fact that the parliamentary term had a full two years remaining. Sources close to the Prime Minister told the Dispatch that the government is calling the elections to 'seek a mandate for the Coalition's many reforms'.

Other senior Socialist Party figures have complained that the election is far too early, and that really this election has been called because of widespread disillusionment in the SP with the Coalition's 'moderate agenda'. The Prime Minister Alfred Skargill has been ridiculed by many on the left of his party as a 'reformist' and a 'capitalist in sheep's clothing'. It seems only the lack of a credible alternative has kept the Prime Minister's party firmly behind him. Whether he will enjoy the left's backing after the election remains to be seen.

JOHN KLUGG TO RESIGN

August 3223

Image

Former Foreign Secretary and leader of the Forward Hutori Party John Klugg is to resign following the disastrous general election results.

The FHP lost 12 seats and 3% of the popular vote, leaving it just 13,000 votes above closest rivals the Imperial Union. Due to the election result, the FHP is no longer needed as part of the coalition, and will go onto the opposition benches.

Mr Klugg, speaking outside Party HQ in Adelia told the party it was time for change:
Tonight's result was not good for our party. Of course I am saddened to have lost so many colleagues in Parliament, despite running an excellent campaign across the country. The result sends us a clear message- it is time for change.....I intend to stand down as leader of our Party in due course, in order to go to the back benches....It has been an honour to serve my country, and an honour to serve you- now is the time to reflect on our failure, and find the right answers.

A leadership election is to shortly follow, with Amanda Hunter and Frank Cousin rumoured to be standing. Mr Klugg has been leader of the party since its creation in 3217. He was Foreign Secretary 3221-3223.

UPSON NEW LEADER
RADICAL RIGHT WING LEADER ELECTED BY FHP

August 3223

Image

In a close election result, Tony Upson, FHP frontbench spokesman for Trade and Industry was elected as leader of the Forward Hutori Party. His closest competitor John Clinton, known in the party as a moderate left winger, lost by just 1,146 votes. Today a backbench MP blamed radical left winger Stuart Hopkins for costing Clinton in the election:

Thanks to Hopkins we’re now stuck with an ardent Conservative who’s bound to take the party to the right

Political commentators have suggested that a move to the right was expected following the disastrous election results in May, as Klugg was mostly associated with Socialists and Liberals.

Upson’s new deputy, Vicky Merton, was elected in a clearer run off between herself and Gregory Pimlott. Merton is known as a right wing moderate, and the hope of many left wingers to have a moderating influence on the new leader has failed to come to fruition.

The result of the election was as follows:

As set out in the party’s constitution, the leadership election will involve all party members, and use the FPTP voting system.

Turnout: of the 784,211 party members, 511,934 voted, a turnout of 65.3%

Tony Upson 199,567 (39%)
John Clinton 198,421 (38.8%)
Amanda Hunter 76,577 (15%)
Stuart Hopkins 37, 369 (7.2%)

Tony Upson is duly elected as leader of party

The deputy leadership election result was as follows:

Turnout: as above

Vicky Merton 339,531 (66.3%)
Gregory Pimlott 172,403(33.7%)

Vicky Kent is duly elected as Deputy leader of the party

LIBERAL LEADER SUFFERS INNER PARTY COUP!

01 November 3223

In a shocking display of behind closed doors politics, the once hailed Liberal party leader William Hook was blindsided by an emergency meeting of his party's executive council. Many MP's felt that the loss of many seats to the Socialists was part of Hook's passive electoral strategy. Numerous members and former members of Parliament called on the national council for a new leadership race and succeeded in a close 5-4 decision. What followed was a whirlwind of activity, as rivals to Mr. Hook and allies alike attempted to justify the shocking turn of events.

"He just doesn't get it," explains Caitlin Shamrock MP and Coalition defence minister. "If we're to be a credible, major coalition partner, than a junior one, we have to win seats. We cannot be satisfied with some cabinet seats."

Others spoke for the embattled leader.

Coalition finance minister David Smith was more sympathetic.

"I think Mr. Hook gave this party it's first huge electoral success and while not a perfect campaign, we did receive a mandate for our coalition with the Socialists. Not perfect, but the Conservatives and their IU allies were not back in the government benches."

Regardless of the validity, the Liberal Party is set to have a primary battle between William Hook, a well-known staunch centre-left pragmatist, Caitlin Shamrock, a leader of the Social Democratic wing of the party and Eric Metzler, an MP with stunning popularity in Roccato.

Köner 'vindicated' over FHP, suffers massive loss in Party election

Image

Two weeks after the general election which saw the FHP lose 12 seats, the IU Leader Maria Köner was forced out of her position. A mere 14 days after a loss of two more seats in Parliament the party lost all confidence in Mme. Köner.

The leadership election has usually lasted for at least two rounds, but this time Mme. Wainwright crushed Köner in the first round itself, securing 80% of the Party votes. She promised to restore the party to its traditional size of at least 60 to 80 seats within three general elections. She appointed Erik Waye to be her deputy.

The last three years saw a massive turnaround of fortunes for Mrs. Köner, who first lead the ID over thirty years ago. She was the only IU Prime Minister in the party's history, serving for a full term of four years. She resigned from government along with the entire party late last century. She returned to politics about 10 years ago, spending 3 years without seats under the HCP government and a member of the Opposition for the last four. She suffered humiliating defeats at the hand of the Socialist Left.

Mrs. Wainwright is a longtime backbencher in the IU, and became a significant figure in the party within the last two years. She is expected to bring the party closer to the center, and take a stronger stance against the Socialists who are destroying this country.

Results:
Hillary Wainwright - 80.3%
Maria Köner - 9.9%
Erik Waye - 9.8%

RAINBOW COALITION IS OVER

The Forward Hutori Party has officially withdrawn its support in the House of Parliament for the government. The so called "rainbow coalition" is over. Despite the FHP withdrawal the Socialist Party and the Hutorian Liberal Party still have enough Parliamentary support for a two party government. However a Cabinet proposal is yet to enter the House for voting prompting speculation that the two parties are not on speaking terms. This speculation is further fuelled by the two parties voting patterns have become more disjointed in recent times and most recently by the HLP leadership suffering an internal coup. Could this be the start of a new direction for the Hutorian Liberal Party or just a maintenance of the status quo?

What we do know is that a new government needs to be proposed, Prime Minister Scargill currently has four open Cabinet posts that need filling. Will the Prime Minister be able to regain his parliamentary majority or can the opposition muster enough support to oust the current government?

Socialist Party proposes a ban on private education
March 3224

Image

Today the Prime Minister has fronted a bill in Parliament demanding an immediate ban on all private education. To outrage from the opposition benches the Prime Minister suggested that private schools 'indoctrinate children into an ideology of privilege' and 'exist merely to prevent wealthy children from realising that they are the same as everyone else'. This has led to a fierce online debate over the ban, with many prominent conservative bloggers condemning the Socialists.

Most prominent amongst these critics has been 'Socialist Watch', which in a statement on its website earlier attacked the government:

As many of you will now be aware the government has proposed a ban on private schools. We'd just like to say that, although we absolutely oppose this ban, Socialist Watch is not surprised. This government has been leering to this sort of wrong headed Bolshevism for the past three years. The government complains about private schools indoctrinating our children, but actually it is they that want to indoctrinate all children into their communist ideology. Having state education is one thing, taking away the choice from parents is quite another. Socialist Watch absolutely condemns this government and its communist plans.

The Hutorian Liberal Party has yet to respond the bill, and it is not entirely clear whether the leadership is fully in support of the proposals. Since the rest of the parties will vote against it is now up to the HLP to decide whether private education is banned in Hutori.
