EARLY ELECTIONS CALLED AFTER NEW PRIME MINISTER'S HAND FORCED

5 November 2876

The Hutori Telegraph can today reveal that the new Prime Minister, Miss Melanie Thompson, called early elections after members of her own party forced her hand. She was committed to the position of maintaining the current parliament by her predecessor, Duke Major. Although it was widely believed she was unhappy with the strategy, out of loyalty she committed to the same path. However, an assorted gathering of CLP members, from both the parliamentary party and from the grassroots approached Miss Thompson at her office in 23 State Square, demanding elections. One high-profile CLP MP, who wishes to remain anonymous said:

"The position was ludicrous, and it was basically about Major's ego, wanting a legacy. Of course, he didn't recognise that he had a good enough legacy as it was, and took advantage of Mel's inexperience. She needed reminding that one of the CLP's primary concerns had always been with democracy. We couldn't allow ourselves to be seen as an enemy of democracy when our record thus far speaks volumes."

Sources also suggest that Miss Thompson received a telephone call from the Lord Great Chamberlain, offering sage advise on the situation.

However, Miss Thompson has widely been recognised as an efficient campaigner. She hopes to win the public round in a series of traditional soapbox hustings, and encouraging female voters to come out in force.

ELECTIONS TO BE HELD NEW YEAR'S DAY

2 December 2876

The government today announced that elections would be held on New Year's Day. Having changed their minds, the CLP wanted elections held as quickly as possible, whilst allowing parties ample time to appeal to the electorate. Responding to claims that her party had been undemocratic, the Prime Minister, Melanie Thompson said to reporters today:

"Well, you know, the claim doesn't really stand. We haven't acted terribly differently to other parties, with the exception of voting once against calling early elections, something that I regret my predecessor did. However, after the disbanding of the nationalists, the republicans introduced and passed a bill in the house, surely illegitimate in their eyes. They then proceeded to introduce even more items of legislation. They and other parties have also voted in favour of other pieces of legislation before the house. Were they serious about their claims of illegitimacy, they would have abstained on every piece of legislation, or voted it down. Instead, all parties have perhaps acted in a way that they shouldn't, so I just won't accept any criticism solely of the CLP."

The piece of legislation that Miss Thompson was referring to was the Fireworks Safety Act, which passed with only 46 votes, with abstentions from the CLP and CEP, and the complete absence of the nationalists.

Miss Thompson is today doing a whirlwind tour of Roccato and the Isle of Sutton, a region that she is keen to keep hold of. It is believed that in her campaign speeches, she will emphasise her progressive morality and permissive civil rights, something she is very keen to put at the centre of her party's platform.

RECENT ELECTIONS HEARTEN LUSKITES

10 January 2877

AXMINSTER-- There was jubilation today at the Axminster Lutheran University, the private university under the control of the Lusk family, as both Maximalists, now a faction within the Union of Radical Republicans, and Accommodationists, now the main faction within the National Syndicalist Party, heralded the recent snap election called by Lord Protector Melanie Thompson. Non-CLP voters were reassured that the CLP would not press its temporary advantage after the collapse of the Ultranationalists.

LUSK ENTERPRISES ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF "ALL-KINGDOM TCHOUKBALL LEAGUE"

7 February 2877

AXMINSTER-- Benedict II, in his ro^le as President of Lusk Enterprises, Hutori's largest corporation, today announced the formation of the All-Kingdom Tchoukball League. Hutori's official sport has enjoyed popularity at a local level and many local clubs exist, but there has up until now been no national championship. The AKTL will initially include one team from each of the twenty conurbations that are officially recognized, divided into four divisions: Northwest, comprising Falristan and Langdon, Coastal, comprising Sutton, Kincardine, Throne and Altar, Port Prosperity, Saint Anselm, and Saint Adrian, Central, comprising Dalry, Constantine, Woodhurst, and Wrightstown-Linda, and Southern, comprising Adelia and Woodhurst. The trophy, called the Lusk Cup, will be awarded at the end of the season, expected to conclude in December of this year. Lusk Enterprises has created a new subsidiary, All-Kingdom Tchoukball Corporation, to manage the league. AKT Corp. will initially own 100% of each team but expects to sell controlling interests in most of them.

PRIME MINISTER POSES FOR "POSE"

9 February 2877

In a move that has shocked and, in some cases appalled, large sections of the establishment, popular 'lad's magazine' "Pose" hit shelves today with the front page being addorned by the Prime Minister, Melanie Thompson. Inside the magazine are four pages of photos of the Prime Minister, accompanied by an interview covering many different issues. It is important to note here for legal reasons that none of the photos of the Prime Minister were nude, but in some, our lawyers have informed us that the phrase "partial undress" is the most appropriate.

At the age of 26, she is one of the youngest high-profile politicians in the country, and the youngest Prime Minister in personal memory. Blonde-haired and blue-eyed, and recognised by many as extremely attractive, she has turned heads since becoming the leader of the CLP, injecting a bit of glamour into Hutorian politics. Yet, she insists that she is a serious politician. In a statement today she said:

"I have always been extremely interested in politics, and it has long been my ambition to enter Parliament and ultimately become Prime Minister. Both of those ambitions have now been fulfilled. Yet, we in Parliament often forget the wider community. Statistics have shown that the 16-25 male demographic is one that is least likely to vote, and we have to look at ways in which to get them interested. I am lucky, so I have been told, in that I have an asset that few politicians possess, and if I can put that to use, and encourage young people to take an active part in our democracy, then so be it."

The interview with "Pose" covered many topics, including her personal life and upbringing, but it also covered a lot of political issues in some depth. She discussed her views on nationality and immigration, her views on civil rights and morality, and the way in which she intends to bring reforms to health and education, and deal with the economy. The terrorist attack on the CLP was also discussed, as was Duke Major's decision not to call an early election. And of course, there was much discussion of how and why young people should involve themselves in the political process. It is therefore fair to say that, despite the pictures, this was in some sense, a traditional political interview.

However, there has still been widespread criticism. Sources close to the King said that His Majesty was "concerned" at these pictures, although nothing specific has been confirmed. It is also expected that the Lord Great Chamberlain will be less than amused by this affair. Several church bishops have expressed "outrage" at the so-called "indecency" of this, and have said that "it brings politics into disrepute". One bishop said, "we thought we had seen it all from the CLP when they attempted to allow polygamous lifestyles, but this really takes the biscuit". Typically, it has divided feminists. The Feminist Association issued a statement condemning the Prime Minister, saying that "she has demeaned herself and demeaned womankind. She has once again demonstrated to men that we are nothing more than sexual objects for their amusement". However, the New Feminist Organisation, said that "the Prime Minister has shown herself to be a liberated woman, who does not feel compelled to adhere to rules and expectations put in place by men. We applaud her actions".

One thing is for sure, this has never been seen before in Hutori, and has possibly changed politics forever!

LORD GREAT CHAMBERLAIN, ARCHBISHOP POINTEDLY REFUSE TO COMMENT ON THOMPSON SWIMSUIT AFFAIR

3 March 2877

AXMINSTER— Both Benedict II, Prince Lusk and Archbishop Michael III of the LCCM have refused to comment on the recent and controversial release of erotic photography featuring the Lord Protector of the Most Excellent and Serene Kingdom of Hutori. A spokesperson representing both ended a press conference on the future of the Lutheran Church's school system when a reporter asked for a comment on the issue. Sources within the Palace have reported that the Lord Great Chamberlain has been extremely amused and has taken to privately calling the Lord Protector "Lady Porn." Communications with the government have frequently and under somewhat flimsy pretense gone through the Justice Secretary, Ian Garry. The Archbishop, a former is reportedly livid and has cited in an internal email a Principality-era law forbidding the publication of any picture of the royal family except official portraits. A legal expert consulted for this article has noted that there is no way that this law, which is still on the books albeit completely unenforced, could be stretched to sue the magazine.

Further Reactions to Thompson's "unveiling"

June 2877

The Archbishop (in absentio) of Thorgerd, Flindar, of the Kazulian Catholic Church, Svein Arassón of the GFK who has become a spokesfigure for the catholics in Hutori too, commented today that "frankly, I cannot see how such shamelessness goes well together with the high post of Lord Protector. Our great citizens need a figure to look up to, not to lust after. Members of the CLP may have been known for their liberal standing for long, but if that happened within the GKF, the responsible person would resign without further ado."

CLP PARTY LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE MEET TO DISCUSS POSEGATE

15 June 2877

After rumblings of discontent amongst opposition parties since the Prime Minister posed for a lad's magazine, the CLP Party Leadership Committee met tonight to discuss their leader's future. Present were the Prime Minister herself, as well as the key members of the committee, Dukes Havers and Major, William Weston, Ian Garry and Edward Hammond, and, rather embarrassingly for the PM, her great-uncle, Duke Thompson. It is believed that around 2,000 letters of complaint have been issued to the Prime Minister's Office, around 150 of those being from CLP grassroot members. It is believed that one of the letters came from Earl Middlemas, the Chairman of Sutton Power Ltd. and CLP financial backer, and it it probably that letter that prompted the meeting of the Party Leadership Committee.

It has been confirmed, however, that the Prime Minister has received the backing of the committee. In a statement just moments ago to the assembled press outside, the PM said:

"Well, I cannot deny that it was a somewhat embarrassing meeting. The photos and interview were both studied carefully, and the Committee came to the conclusion that I had done nothing wrong whatsoever. This is a party that emphasises the rights and liberties of the individual to do as they please, and they respected my decision. No, I do not regret doing the shoot, as I believe that it will have encouraged young men to engage in politics a little more, and take an interest in what the different parties have to offer. Now, if you don't mind, I have a country to run."

Asked whether she had any further photo shoots lined up, the Prime Minister declined to comment. Duke Thompson said that the whole affair was "like the proverbial mountainous molehill". Duke Havers simply gave a wry smile upon his exit. The criticisms of the various religious groups are unlikely to phase the Prime Minister, who is showing signs of becoming a strong and capable leader, having formed a strong government, and introducing several bills herself. Already, comparisons are being drawn with Duchess Wright, although what she would have made of the photos, it is difficult to guess.

PRIME MINISTER STAKES HER CAREER ON TWO PERSONALLY SPONSORED BILLS

27 November 2877

Image
The Prime Minister on her way out from Parliament after making keynote speeches

In a surprise move, the Prime Minister today personally introduced two bills to parliament that would change the face of health and education. Whilst the CLP has toyed with some state provision in the past, through their Tuition Fee Loan Act, this is the first time that the CLP has ever voted in favour of, let alone promoted, the idea of state healthcare and education. It is unlikely that all areas of the party will be in favour of the idea, with all previous leaders being outright against the idea of public provision, especially the party's founder, Duchess Wright. However, the Prime Minister has so far carried her party with her, allowing her to introduce the bills to parliament, and vote in favour of them.

The Chairman of Wrightstown CLP Constituency Association, Doris May, has been the first prominent member to speak out against the bills:

"I never thought that I would see the day when a CLP leader would advocate state health and education. It's absolutely preposterous, and I am just glad that our glorious leader has not lived to witness this. She will be turning in her grave."

Yet, the Prime Minister appears confident in her efforts. Whilst it is yet unsure whether the other parties will support the bill, she hopes that the GKF will support it due to the lower regulation, and that the measure of localism introduced will persuade the republicans to give it their support. Yet, the opposition parties seem to favour regulation, and so support can not be taken for granted. Yet, this does not phase the Prime Minister. She has told her aides that, even if these measures do not pass, she will not be moved or shaken. Several aides have commented that she is becoming presidential in stature and ability, and has the party rallied around her. Her personal introduction of the bills reveals this, especially as she has gone over the head of seasoned Education Secretary, Michael Heslop.

The Telegraph has traditionally been against public provision of these services, but our admiration of Miss Thompson is increasing by the day. Her nerve and courage is to be commended.

NATIONAL SYNDICALIST PARTY PUBLISHES "NINE POINTS"

30 March 2878

AXMINSTER— Three years after its formation, the Doctrine Committee of the National Syndicalist Party has released its manifesto, the first-ever in Lusk history. The National Syndicalist Party, which has been known by many names but has always been the party of House Lusk, has previously refused to elucidate in any great detail its philosophy, instead insisting on being guided by the will of the Lusk and situational factors, even insisting on adopting the stubbornly generic "Northern Lights Party" as its official name. The document, officially known as "The Fundamental Doctrine of the Lusk Ideology," consists of nine points, each given a heading and a short description. The Doctrine Committee also issued a "closing statement" that will be sealed for one week and then released which provides an account of the debates as recorded by Kendra Ashburn, Btss., the head of the committee. The most interesting thing about the Nine Points must not be what is contained but what is left out: there is no mention about the Lusk family's status as a fons honorum, or as sovereigns, no mention of the movement of Lusk symbols, indeed except for the first point, which shortly states that the Lusk family has a "special status," there is no mention of Lusk at all.
THE FUNDAMENTAL DOCTRINE OF THE LUSK IDEOLOGY
Prepared by the Doctrine Committee of the Fourth Party Congress (2875), in preparation 2875-2878

1. Special status of the Lusk family. We affirm that House Lusk has a natural leadership rôle within our society, that they are, by right, our guardians and leaders. Although we recognize that they are men, we believe that any good government takes their structural position into account.

2. Class co-operation. We affirm that society cannot be without its social classes, and that the different classes must treat each other's interests with respect, and, to this end, the upper classes must negotiate the wages, working conditions, et cetera with the lower classes instead of simply imposing on them. Likewise, the lower classes are expected to follow the leadership of the upper classes.

3. World involvement. We affirm that Central Macon should have a position of pre-eminence in world affairs and in affairs on the continent, and that participation by Central Macon in international organizations will lead to better opportunities for citizens at home and abroad.

4. Promotion of the culture of the Hutors. We affirm that, although we would never seek to forcibly deprive anyone of their choice of cultures, the culture of the Hutors must be predominant within Central Macon. Hutori culture should be promoted within the school system and other government agencies, and the Hutori language should remain the sole official language of all levels of government.

5. Political Lutheranism. We affirm that Lutheranism should command a position of especial respect in official circles, and that its doctrines should be taken into account when deciding policy, that Lutherans represent an especially loyal fragment of the population, that Lutheran values are the best for individuals to adopt, and that, to this end, a Lutheran church ought to be established and given state support to bring about conversion and a Lutheran atmosphere throughout Central Macon.

6. Military defence. We affirm that Terra today is a dangerous place, and that Central Macon must be ready to defend itself from foreign enemies, and, to this end, must arm itself with the most dangerous weapons and be ready to call up its military at a moment's notice.

7. Predominance of urban life. We affirm that Central Macon is a primarily urban country and that urban life and urban concerns must take precedence over rural concerns in every area. Farm policy should be, beyond ecological concerns, left to the marketplace to provide the cheapest food for city dwellers. All policies should be crafted with urban areas in mind.

8. The fundamental danger of cults of personality. We affirm that government should run on the basis of administrative and not charismatic principles, on the basis of the fallibility of the individual, and that any person proving too popular, especially with the uneducated, is a mortal threat to the moral integrity of Central Macon.

9. Local government. We affirm that many laws are nonsensical when applied to the whole state, and must be applied locally instead, determined by local conditions by local council-level governments, and that the constitutional self-determination of these council-level governments must be preserved.
