THEODORE XVII. OF ISLYN, KUNGENES KONGE OF KAZULIA, DUKE OF ISLYN AND HERRA AF ULFMÆRR, LEADER OF THE GOD'S AND THE KING'S FIGHTERS KILLED

Today, shocking news came from the Isle of Sutton, the headquarters of the GKF: Their leader, the King of Kazulia Theodore XVII. of Islyn, was killed in a car crash, together with his wife Elissia El'Bakur ab Nurabman. Official reports so far state that the Duke's driver apparently lost control on a road that was very wet from an ongoing autumn storm - he must have driven too fast, which resulted in aquaplaning right in the middle of the Isle of Sutton's largest city - the car came off track, and dashed into a tree, which killed its inhabitants almost instantly.

While this is a sad occasion, preparations have already begun for the crowning of the duke's successor, Thorsson IX. of Islyn, Earl of Islia. Very little is known about the new leader of the GKF, and the party eagerly awaits his speech about their future - which won't occur for at least six months, as it is protocol to bury the old duke first, then have the crowning ceremony (as the new duke also becomes king of Kazulia), and then to install the duties of leadership for the GKF. In the meantime, Jón Sigurð Þorkillsón, candidate for the HoG and "second in command" of the GKF, will lead the party following the guidelines of the last Theodore XVII.

The burial will be held in January 2885 at Isle of Sutton, the crowning ceremonies will be held in March 2885 in the cathedral of Carter City, Falristan, where the Kazulian kings have tradiditionally been crowned after they came to Hutori. Royal and noble families of Terra are invited to both the funeral and the crowning ceremony.

LUSK ENTERPRISES ANNOUNCES ARCOLOGY PROGRAM

2 January 2885

AXMINSTER— Lusk Enterprises, the largest private corporation in Hutori, today announced a new "arcology" program to be headed by a new subsidiary, Axminster Arcology. Benedict Lusk, President of Lusk Enterprises, detailed the program. "An ever-increasing population without a commensurate increase in land base requires a radical re-thinking of cities and the ways we live. Infrastructure as we have understood it cannot sustain a population density of upwards of four hundred people per square kilometer; the logistics of transporting enough supplies to keep our cities intact is consuming an ever-increasing proportion of our resources. Obviously, a new solution is needed. The arcology is a long-hypothesized type of construction where what would have amounted to a small city in previous times is contained within a single square kilometer— a giant skyscraper with everything one could conceivably need. As I speak these words, the first arcology in Central Macon, the Adrian I Arcology, is beginning to be built right here in Axminster. This enormous structure is expected to house almost a half-million people and hundreds of thousands of square feet of office space, not to mention the vast sky gardens that will serve as the parks of this new generation of city... Axminster Arcology has plans for three additional arcologies, to be called Benedict I, Adrian II, and Leopold II, to go up around Axminster, with similar populations... We have bigger plans, too. Axminster Arcology has a unique solution to the problem of overpopulation, and our product will be exported across Terra to solve the pre-eminent issue of our day." The NSP also introduced legislation today calling for state subsidies for arcology construction.

Ideological Orientation Speech of Duke Thorsson IX. of Islyn

Today, the newly crowned king of Kazulia, duke of Islyn, and now leader of the GKF, gave a speech in the Islyn halls at the Isle of Sutton, where he introduced the new ideological concept of the GKF. Key phrases were the "return to a more monarchic and noble Hutori", "emphazising on the powers of a free and unlimited market to distribute resources the way they should be", and finally "forming a strong alliance of Hutoris neo-liberal and conservative parties to keep the nation strong and prosperous".

NATIONAL WORKERS PARTY ADMITS RACISM

15 December 2885

What was a suspicion for many people in Hutori, today became a fact as a spokesman for the NWP finally admitted, in Parliament, that the party operates on, and wishes to promote, a racist agenda. Upon criticism from the former Prime Minister, Duchess Thompson, regarding the NWP's cabinet proposal which would have seen one of their members take the position of Foreign Secretary, the NWP spokesman said: "And like racism is not a good thing?"

The statement was followed by a shocked silence in the chamber today, before shouting and uproar exploded from all benches but those of the NWP. Clearly shocked that this was the response to her statement, it took some time before Duchess Thompson rose to her feet to respond to that claim, saying only that the NWP have now shown their true colours.

It follows months and years of speculation that the NWP have a wicked and callous agenda. The URR noted some time ago that one of their bills originally referenced fascism, although this was interestingly changed to reference democracy before any more than a couple of people had seen the initial reference. When many had assumed that the collapse of the Ultranationalists had brought about the end to this sort of politics, there will be panic throughout the land that a party such as this wishes to divide society on racialist and discriminatory lines.

Duke Major, the former CLP Prime Minister who has often been credited with aiding the collapse of the Ultranationalists through his democratic coalitions, told the Telegraph today that he was not surprised that this sort of party still existed, but knew that they would never get anywhere near power, due to the overwhelming desire for democracy and liberty amongst Hutorian people and all parties.

ALL-KINGDOM TCHOUKBALL LEAGUE ANNOUNCES TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP

30 September 2886

AXMINSTER— Ahead of the tenth anniversary of the first and only all-Hutori tchoukball league, the Lusk-controlled All-Kingdom Tchoukball League, announced a round-robin tournament to be held in addition to the normal annual Lusk Cup championship at the victor's banquet for the 2886 champions, the Woodhurst Mountaineers who defeated the St. Adrian Bishops in a thrilling 10-7 victory. The Lusk Cup usually comes with a prize purse estimated in value at nearly 40m lira, but the ten-year championship, to be called the Axminster Arcology Championship Tchoukball Tournament, to be overseen by the Prince Lusk, Benedict II and, in addition to a relatively small monetary prize, the honor of all the players being created Baronets by the Prince. Tchoukball, long a popular sport in Kenai and Adelia, has spread throughout Hutori in recent years. It was declared the official sport in the mid-28th century, and has been filled a vacuum in Hutori broadcasting, which lacked a strong slate of sport-related programming common in other countries.

AXMINSTER CORPORATION CONFIRMS RUMORS OF ULTRANATIONALIST REVIVAL

20 January 2887

AXMINSTER— At the headquarters of the Axminster Corporation, a shadowy private intelligence group operated by the Lusk Family, a spokesperson identified as Martin Grant announced that the rumors of an Ultranationalist revival appear to be true. "The Axminster Corporation can confirm that a group is planning to file a list with the Kingdom Election Commission under the name 'Ultranationalists' and that an individual named Theodore Percival appears on this list. We have detected no hints of upcoming terrorist activity." The Ultranationalists were responsible for a period of turbulence in the mid-70s, during which time a government minister was assassinated and Benedict II was shot, paralyzing him from the waist down.

TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS TO CLOSE; BENEDICT II ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

15 September 2887

AXMINSTER— In the Axminster Hippodrome today the Acton Giants trounced the Langdon Pioneers 15-3 to win the ten-year anniversary tournament of the All-Kingdom Tchoukball League. The seven-man squad were each created Baronets by Benedict II at a ceremony immediately following the victory, with the exception of Yorrick Gates, center-frame for the Giants, refusing the honor owing to his hard-line CLP convictions.

Benedict, Prince Lusk, Lord Great Chamberlain, President of Lusk Enterprises, President of the Axminster Corporation, Chairman of the Supreme Praesidium of the National Syndicalist Party, Temporal Protector of the Lutheran Church of Central Macon, and holder of a myriad other offices, also announced his retirement. Following a bout with colon cancer a few years back and an assassination attempt in the mid-70s that left him unable to walk, Benedict, or "Uncle Ben" as he is known to his supporters, has been in poor health and has been delegating an ever-increasing amount of power and responsibility to his deputies and assistants. "My friends, I am going to retire at the end of this year, officially abdicating at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. My term as Prince has been a long one, and I assumed most of the powers long before I was ever crowned. I will retain some functions— I will continue to be involved in Tchoukball, supporting my beloved Arcos, who unfortunately couldn't be here tonight, and acting as team owner." Benedict said that Adrian, his son, the current Earl of Axminster, would be crowned at the "first rays of light of the new year" by the Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Central Macon. He also added that he expected "Adrian to change quite a few things." Adrian's manifesto, "Lusk in the Thirtieth Century," was published in the first years of this decade, and outlines a somewhat different program from that of his father. "This marks my final public appearance. I don't know how much longer I have to live. I wish you all well, and remember— vi veri universum vivi vincemus!" With that, one of the most controversial political figures of the Restoration Era wheeled himself offstage and into retirement as the Carmina Granadorum, the Lusk anthem, played. Benedict is the last Prince who remembers the Lusk regime in its glory days.

ADRIAN III CROWNED

1 January 2888

AXMINSTER— In a dawn ceremony today, Archbishop John I of the Lutheran Church of Central Macon crowned Adrian, Earl of Axminster, creating him Adrian III, Prince Lusk. Adrian III, after observing the church service, then delivered a speech to the small crowd of Lusk dignitaries in attendance, during which he said little of note.

Adrian III is a very large man. He towered over everyone else in the room— at fully two meters tall, he will certainly be the tallest Prince to ever sit, and at a reported eighteen stone, perhaps the heaviest as well. Unlike his father, who was famous for his calm demeanor, Adrian radiates a maniac energy which can unsettle those in the room who are not accustomed to it. Those close to him report that he can have quite the temper, and is given over to fits of passion. He is, however, quite reclusive, and is unlikely to be given over to the kinds of barnstorming, country-wide tours that his father was so fond of.

Adrian is expected to travel to the Winter Palace in Falristan to be installed as Lord Great Chamberlain by George I in February, and to be confirmed as President of Lusk Enterprises later this month. Later this year, he will likely open a new Continuity Committee in the House of Lords to reach a permanent constitutional settlement.

DUCHESS THOMPSON'S FIRST INTERVIEW AFTER RESIGNATION

2 February 2887

Since her retirement almost two years ago, Duchess Thompson has become unique in being the only CLP leader to continue leading her party after retiring from the position of Prime Minister. Of course, Dukes Thompson and Major retired whilst the CLP continued to hold a majority, as did Duchess Wright. Only Duke Havers suffered at the hands of the electorate, and he promptly resigned. However, Ducess Thompson believes there is need for her to carry on. Today, we caught up with her, and we can reveal she is as determined as ever to regain 32 State Square.

HT: So, Duchess, what have you been up to since you retired as Prime Minister?
DT: Well, as you could expect, I have been concentrating fully on politics. I am only 34 years old, and so still have the majority of my career ahead of me. I have spent much of my time in Parliament, debating with my parliamentary colleagues. Other than that, I have been able to concentrate on the things I didn't have time for in my 9 years as Prime Minister, namely reading, following Tchoukball and listening to music.

HT: You are the first CLP leader to continue as leader after resigning as Prime Minister. Why did you decide to do so?
DT: I became Prime Minister at the age of only 23, and, so being Prime Minister was really only the start of my life...unusually! I have much more to give to Hutori, and intend to be here for a while yet. During my premiership, I managed to manoeuvre the Party away from a strictly private sector line, introducing a mixed system in health and education. This proved to be extraordinarily beneficial to the country, and hope that it continues to be so. I want to remain as leader to continue down this sort of line.

HT: And yet, unusually, you decided not to be in the coalition Cabinet? Is this out of dislike for the UFC?
DT: Not at all. Of course, I suffered a lot of grief from them during my leadership - indeed, they were formed out of opposition to us. But it was I, of course, who initiated the coalition. But I sometimes think that, in a coalition system, it is easier to lead a party when you are outside of that coalition. Remember that, come election campaign time, all parties oppose each other. Had I been in government with the UFC in a minority capacity, I would have found that harder to do. So I decided to ask four of my colleagues to continue in government, and I would lead the party in a legislative and national capacity, rather than sitting in government.

HT: Is your support for the government unconditional?
DT: Well of course not, but quite what my exact conditions are, I am unwilling to say!

HT: What is your assessment of the current state of Hutorian politics?
DT: It's a funny sort of time at the moment, and I worry that we are seeing a return to authoritarianism. The CEP have proposed a whole raft of bills that would see the size of the state dramatically increased, and the UFC, despite their favouring civil liberties, recently made it illegal for an employer to fire his workers. The NWP, despite their apparent inability to construct proper sentences, remain present, and rumour has it that the Ultranationalists are set to return. It's a worrying time and there is trouble on the horizon, another reason why I am adamant that I will stay around to see that my values are continuously represented.

HT: So, no plans for retirement?
DT: [laughs] Absolutely not. Though, of course, my position as leader remains at the pleasure of the national membership and the Party Leadership Committee. As I say, I am only 34, still long before most of my predecessors started thinking about high office, so I have a long way to go yet. It's a fascinating position to be in.

HT: In one of your resignation speeches, you predicted that the CLP may never be the majority party again. Do you stand by that?
DT: [long pause] I think so. I know it's unconventional for a party leader to predict such a thing. But we've had such a long period at the top, unbroken for almost 40 years with the exception of one parliamentary term. Such things don't last forever. Also, the CLP tends to do better when there are fewer parties. When there is such a wide range of parties, the number of socialist bills that are produced tends to be overwhelming, affecting the opinions of the people. I therefore predict that we will become a party near the top, but never at the top again. I hope dearly that I am proven wrong.

HT: What contact do you currently have with you predecessors as CLP leader?
DT: Well, of course, both Dukes Havers and Major remain on the Party Leadership Committee and so we meet regularly. Neither sit in parliament anymore and so we are not in constant contact, although both have houses in Adelia and Kenai, and so when I am either at parliament or in my constituency, I see them often.

HT: Thank you for giving us your time, Duchess.
DT: It was a pleasure!

DUCHESS THOMPSON IN HIDING

29 May 2889

Image
Duchess Thompson being led away by bodyguard, with glasses to protect face from possible sudden attack

Immediately after speaking in parliament to propose a new coalition government and voting in the yes lobby, Duchess Thompson, the CLP leader and former Prime Minister, was swept away by the Hutorian Secret Service after information had got through to them about threats made to her by extreme members of the Ultranationalists. Following the resignation of the former nationalist leader, Theodore Percival, simply for marrying a supermodel, and the party's attack on the pornographic industry, secret services received information that radical members were planning an attack on Duchess Thompson for her previous photo shoot in popular lad's magazine "Pose". Shortly after becoming Prime Minister, Duchess Thompson, then only 24 years of age, posed for the magazine in very little clothing, though the CLP have always denied that this constituted pornography. At the time Duchess Thompson came under attack from some quarters of society, but has always defended her actions, as trying to engage young men in the political process. The Hutorian Secret Services today confirmed that the Duchess has been taken into hiding after reports were received suggesting that a cohort of nationalists planned to throw acid into her face at some point, to make a statement against such public display of femininity. It is unlikely that the Duchess will be in hiding long-term, but is certain to retain a few special agents around her when in public to ensure such an atrocity could not occur. At 36, the Duchess still remains one of the youngest high-profile politicians in Hutori, and one of the most well-known, and longest-serving.
