BENEDICT II ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGE FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS PARTY

1 September 2858

AXMINSTER— Just a year into his reign as Prince Lusk, Benedict II today announced a name change for the House Lusk party. Although it went by many different names in its early years, the Northern Lights Party has been so named for more than a century. Perhaps wishing to distance himself from the scandalous death of his father, Leopold II, and to try to communicate to the voters better the platform of the party, Benedict unveiled "National Syndicalist Party" as the new name of the Lusk party. "The message is the same: class co-operation, political Lutheranism, and ecology," the Prince said. "Only the name is different." While Axminster officially declined to answer any questions about the electoral fortunes of the party, which have been poor since multi-party elections were reintroduced, inside sources reported that the decision was an attempt to boost the results by declaring an ideology on the ballot line.

LCCM INTERNET ACADEMY NOW MOST POPULAR PRIMARY SCHOOL IN COUNTRY

28 February 2859

AXMINSTER— The Lutheran Church of Central Macon, the religious arm of the Lusk apparatus and one-time official religion, announced today that its "Lutheran Internet Academy" is the most popular primary school system in the country. Unlike the LCCM's regular primary schools, the LIA is non-selective. Hutori has a unique confluence of laws that makes education mandatory, but does not provide any system of free, public education. Only Keymon has similar laws, and there the family-compound structure means that every child is more or less provided with free education. But in Hutori, as millions of low-income parents struggle to scrape together the money to send their children to school or face child-neglect charges, the LIA has proven a godsend. Available in both English and Dutch, the LIA educates seven million children. The four subjects of the LIA system, which employs no teachers and has everything graded by computer, are bilingual literacy, basic mathematics, theology, and Latin. "I'm not a big fan of the religion element," says Gertrude van der Waal, a Dutchophone mother of five from Throne and Altar, "but I can't afford to send all my children to private schools. Big education corporations like Royal Academies charge too much, and the local ones aren't very good. With the LIA, at least this way my children can try to apply to a Church secondary school, in addition to saving me money." The Lutheran Church of Central Macon also announced that it would be creating a free secondary school to be called the Lutheran Internet Preparatory School. LIPS will work on a similar, 100% automated model, although students are not expected to be eligible for admission to university.

MAXIMALIST FACTION OF NSP HOLDS JEERING "BIRTHDAY PARTY" FOR JOHN III

20 April 2864

BEKENIAL— On the streets of Bekenial, choked by all manner of unregulated vehicles and the tens of thousands of indigents who flock to the capitol to panhandle, a faction within the National Syndicalist Party known as the Maximalists, who desire a wholehearted return to Lusk rule, held a mocking "birthday party" for His Most Royal and Serene Highness, John III, where the king was represented in effigy by a crown over a question mark. Free cake was handed out and passers-by were invited to spit on the question mark. The leader of the Maximalists, Richard St. John, Bt., who was not in attendance, commented that "the birthday party stemmed from a feeling of frustation among some Luskites that the king is a total unknown... certainly we have no idea how old he actually is, or where he was born, or what he was doing in the long decades of Lusk rule. Within our party, people are becoming more and more frustrated with the neanderthal approach of the new ruling class and we believe that the balance of power will tip in our favor during the next All-Party Congress to elect the new Chairman." The third decennial All-Party Congress, which elects the leadership of the NSP and is presided over by His Illustriousness the Lord Great Chamberlain, is set to convene next year. Under the leadership of the accommodationist Harvey Acre, Bt. the National Syndicalist Party is a more-or-less loyal opposition party to the libertarian parties that control the Parliament and indeed all organs of government. The All-Party Congress will also consider a resolution to shorten the term of the Party Chairman to five years.

LUSK TRIUMPHANT

10 April 2866

BEKENIAL— For the first time since the restoration, the Luskite party has placed first. Party Chairman Richard St. John, Bt., MP in an joint address with His Serene Highness Benedict II, announced that talks to form a government would begin immediately. "I think we have the return of the CEP to thank for this." The Cabal of Entrenched Plutocrats, which was revived for this election, temporarily deposed the Lusk monarchy in favor of a Catholic-based federation during the first half of this century. Despite this, the NSP announced that it would be more than happy to form a coalition government with the CEP, although due to constitutional issues, no Lusk family member would be able to participate directly in such a government, although Michael III, Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Central Macon, would be allowed to join. Under the Lusk regime, the Archbishop was also the Secretary of Education and Culture.

GKF announces ideological changes

Today, King Theodore XVII. Islyn of Kazulia announced a vast change of party goals and principles. While the cabinet stays mostly the same, the party will now "react to the longings of the Hutorian citizens" and follow a more protective line: "It is clear, that our citizens need guidance, especially after the outcomes of the last election, and it is clear that the God's and the King's Fighters are not a party to ignore the people's needs. Therefor we will return to our old and valued principles, that the basic well-being of the country lies in a feudal system, where the maximum of individual care can be achieved, and where the number of people being hurt by necessarily abstrac laws will come to a minimum. We still value the freedom of the individual, in fact, we believe it can only be enhanced by moralic guidelines and the protection of a caring state."
Although it is said that parts of the party weren't too pleased with this sudden change, most of it, together with the cabinet of former ministers and future hopes remained silent and seemed to approve. Independant experts are also not surprised - the common tenor is that the party was constantly losing seats, and that a change like this was bound to happen soon, in order to keep the party alive.

CEP Returns, Seeks New Aristocratic Consensus

12 Augustus 2866

SAINT JOHN--Nearly four decades after its sudden and mysterious collapse, the Cabal of Entrenched Plutocrats has been reestablished in Hutori. During its heyday in the 2810's, the CEP broke the Lusk monarchy and established a five-kingdom coalition under a nominal Emperor. The original organization probably dissolved due to internal dissension and the residual influence of the Lusk system of political patronage. The new CEP is still dedicated to the rights and powers of the hereditary nobility, but it no longer intends a whole-sale obliteration of the current status quo. According to the current party leader, Lord Aemilian Licenu, the grandson of the previous Lord of Licenu, "the CEP's current goal is the restructuring of the parliament, which seems to represent primarily commercial interests, into a House of Lords, which would represent the true guardians of the nation, the landed nobility. To that end, the CEP will accept any party alliances that are advantageous, although we are especially pleased to be part of the the Lusk-led cabinet."

RICHARD ST. JOHN ACCEPTS AWARDS FROM BENEDICT II

14 April 2867

AXMINSTER— In the wake of the reforms, Benedict II, Prince Lusk, today formally awarded the Order of the Northern Star, the highest Luskite award, to Prime Minister Richard St. John. Although the award was created in 2830, it has not been awarded since the Hutori restoration. Before the restoration, it was typically awarded only as a retirement honor to ministers or other high-ranking servants who had already been given a Baronetcy and the Order of Leopold I, the typical civil-service honors. In a speech, Benedict II praised St. John's "vision and persistence... when our cause looked darkest." A year before the 2866 election that put St. John's NSP-CEP government in power, St. John won an internal party power struggle leading the maximalist faction against the accommodationist faction, which is now partially discredited. "The kingdom's Parliament, although far from controlled by us, nevertheless is undoing much of the insanity of the libertarians. Why, soon, we might even join the twenty-seventh century," the Prince joked while taking a drag on his omnipresent cigarette. The reforms are expected to set up a wide variety of new public corporations to bring services to areas that have been dispossessed of even the most basic mail delivery since the libertarians were brought into power. On accepting the honor, St. John promised to "continue to forge policies based on pragmatism, not dogma." The other Lusk members of the cabinet received the Order of the Lutheran Rose.

CEP MINISTERS RECEIVE HONORS FROM BENEDICT II

3 August 2867

AXMINSTER— The Cabal ministers of Trade and Industry, Health and Social Services, and Foreign Affairs today received awards at the Lusk compound in Axminster. Lord Licenu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received the Order of Leopold I, the Order of Adrian I, and the Order of the Silver Cross, and was created a Baronet in addition to his other titles. Isaac Nicedor, Minister of Health and Social Services, and Andronicus Aloris, minister of Trade and Industry, each received the Order of Adrian I and was created a Baronet. The lavish reception, rumored to cost almost a million lira, was the first of its kind for non-members of the Lusk system. Benedict II, in his speech, praised the "foresight and contributions to class co-operation that the Cabal has offered our land." Rumors of a bigger announcement proved to be false.

NATIONAL SYNDICALIST PARTY RELEASES STATEMENT ON RESTORATION

6 July 2873

AXMINSTER— In response to recent comments by King George I, NSP chairman Sir Richard St. John Bt. OSN OL1, former Lord Protector, officially clarified his party's position in a joint statement co-signed by Benedict II, who continues to play an active ro^le in creating party policy and is an ex officio member of the cabinet. "The position of the NSP is that the Lusk should be restored to the throne, but we do not advocate the removal of the current monarch. If a change in house is to be accomplished, it will be accomplished only by a change in the order of succession. The NSP will not countenance the removal of a sitting king for any reason other than insanity or infirmity. If in some future time Lusk will be restored, it will be only upon the natural expiration of the reign of the existing kings." This policy is thought to be a sentimental reaction to the infamous post-monarchy career of Leopold II, Benedict II's father, and a strategic move to continue the alliance with the CLP and other parties.
