The head of social policies of the GioEB and judge by profession has managed to be elected general secretary of the Left Bloc with the support of the most left-wing sector
After the electoral results, in which the current leftist government has lost the absolute majority in the National Assembly, Leandro Bisso's resignation to continue leading the party was immediate. On the same electoral night, as soon as the results had been made public, Mr. Bisso announced that he would not continue to lead the party. The announcement did not catch anyone off guard, as for months there had been movements within the party to put its future successors in the spotlight. Now, after the elections to elect its new secretary general, the Left Bloc has already announced a winner: Alessia Soldato, with more than 65% of the militants' votes.
Mrs. Soldato, 38, a judge by profession and a member of the GioEB during her youth, where she was the head of social policies for the formation, won four other candidates during the elections. Of the five, Mrs. Soldato was the only representative of the party's most left wing, after managing to unite a joint candidacy to avoid the division of the vote and favor candidates closer to the political center. Thanks to this, she won in four of the five regions, with the exception of Mezzodiurno, where she landed in second position:
Mezzodiurno:
-Bruto Pezzio: 43%
-Alessia Soldato: 22%
-Fico Frame: 20%
-Vittoria Cubino: 12%
-Roberto Giorna: 3%
Padagna:
-Alessia Soldato: 55%
-Roberto Giorna: 24%
-Fico Frame: 17%
-Vittoria Cubino: 3%
-Bruto Pezzio: 1%
Sarregna:
-Alessia Soldato: 28%
-Vittoria Cubino: 23%
Gross Pezzio: 21%
-Fico Frame: 15%
-Roberto Giorna: 13%
Silicia:
-Alessia Soldato: 74%
-Fico Frame: 13%
-Roberto Giorna: 11%
-Vittoria Cubino: 1%
-Bruto Pezzio: 1%
Trivendito:
-Alessia Soldato: 69%
-Roberto Giorna: 19%
-Fico Frame: 10%
-Vittoria Cubino: 2%
-Bruto Pezzio: 0%
Mrs. Soldato therefore, vastly triumphed in the federations typically considered the most prized on the left, such as Silicia or Trivendito, while she did worse in Mezzodiurno or Sarregna, those that reject the extremes more. As for the supports she had, her candidacy had received the explicit support of the Governor of Silicia, Annamaria Licari, and of the President of the Senate, Aristarco Azzara, who has managed to revalidate by two more legislatures his mandate as head of this institution, a position he has held since 4749, when the first elections to this House were held.
We speak to the new secretary general:
Interviewer: Thank you very much for accepting this interview and congratulations on your victory.
Alessia Soldato: Thank you very much, it is a pleasure and an honor.
I: Let's go first with the usual question: How did it feel to know that you had won the elections for the General Secretariat?
A.S: Obviously enormously happy. It is an honor for me to put myself in charge of such an important party with as much history as the Left Bloc, and I am going to do my best to leave a good legacy.
I: What will be your main steps and policies at the head of the party?
A.S: My only loyalty is to the people of Istalia. This means, we must resume the fight for republicanism, abandoned during the last decades, to demand true equality among all of our society. And that goes through a true republican commitment, both socially and institutionally. Having said that, I consider that this coalition government between the Social Democrats and us has been good for our nation, but we need to aspire to more, because we must prevent more privatizations from taking place and we must legislate for the benefit of the public, to create a State that benefit all citizens equally and in which all feel protected, respected, and in which they cannot suffer economic problems. We must be able to guarantee decent working conditions and wages that allow the development of our society, instead of seeing Istalia as a State-Company in which only a few individuals benefit to the detriment of society as a whole. Despite this, I want to legislate in collaboration with the other parliamentary groups. It is necessary to leave the trenches and disputes behind, and at least during my tenure, there will be no departure in tone, that I can assure you.
I: Does that mean that you are open to legislating even with OFF, a party that yours has described on many occasions as "extreme right"?
A.S: No. The limits of my party are clear to me. As I said, I would like to leave the disputes and trenches behind, but the fact that there is no departure from tone does not mean that we are going to stop fighting the extreme right. It only means that we will do so through argumentation and debate, clearly exposing the flaws in their speech and neutralizing the arguments they may use against us. We have to redignify politics, make citizens see the role we play as beneficial to all, rather than permanently in conflict with one another. The extreme right has to be fought with arguments, not just raising our voice. But if we are to do both, we will fill the streets as well.
I: I understand. Then, after the latest electoral results, in which the current government has lost its majority, the Left Bloc would be open to form a government with the ANI or the populists, in order to prevent the government from depending on OFF, like previous conservative governments?
A.S: The answer in this case is also no. Our electoral program and ideology are diametrically opposed to what both the ANI and the Populists defend, and that would prevent constituting any minimally functional government with them. What we are going to do is debate law by law, article by article, so that our positions are clear. If the ANI and the Populists want to unite their destinies with OFF again, it is their responsibility. But over and over again, while their electoral results are only saved thanks to the coalition they form, while they are constantly relegated to the last places, OFF time and again scales positions in Istalia, and I think they should do a reflection exercise on the why of this situation.
I: Speaking of electoral results, the Left Bloc has experienced a constant decline in the number of votes during the last elections. To what do you attribute this?
A.S: Being in the government almost always means wear and tear for the parties that comprise it. In any case, we have been in the top three positions in all electoral appointments for more than fifty years, and obtaining between 20 and 35% of the votes in each one of them. I would not consider it a failure at all. Another proof of citizen support is that the Left Bloc, despite having made it public over and over again that they reject the current legislation of the Senate, an institution to which we see that, thanks to the votes of the ANI, Populists and OFF, it serves mostly just to prevent regime change in Istalia, and therefore we refuse to occupy our seats there, the Left Bloc has won each and every one of the three Senate elections that have been held, always obtaining around a third of all seats available. This is yet another proof that support for our formation in Istalia is general, and not just that of any particular region.
I: Despite not occupying their seats, they do elect the President of the Senate thanks to their status as the leading political force. Aristarco Azzara already has two terms at the head of the institution and has just been announced to lead a third term. Have you considered offering the vice presidency to other political parties in favor of representative plurality, and how long do you plan for Mr. Azzara to continue leading the Senate?
A.S: First of all, Mr. Azzara will continue to lead the Senate as many times as he considers as long as we continue to win the elections. My relationship with him is excellent, and I consider him a great politician, and that he is doing a very good institutional job. In relation to the other question, I am afraid the answer again is no. Representative plurality is already present in the composition of the Senate and the Assembly. Why would we offer the vice presidency of the Senate to a member of the ANI or of the Populists? I can't find much logic for it, honestly.
I: Finally, your predecessor Mr. Bisso has been in charge of the party for more than 30 years. Do you also plan to occupy the general secretariat for such a long period of time?
A.S: I will hold this position as long as I feel that I am being useful to my party and my nation. When I stop thinking of it that way, I will not hesitate to step aside and allow others to run the Left Bloc.
