THE ULD HOLD THEIR PRE-ELECTION CONGRESS

Image
Grimaldo Simonette, the Prime Minister and the ULD Chairperson, held opened and closed this years general electoral congress of the party.

As every year before the elections, the ULD held their quatro-annual congress, called by the party leader, to revise the party's leadership and announce the ministerial candidates, and also demonstrate the power of the Liberal Democrats, the most successful party in Istalia of the last 20+years. Prime Minister Grimaldo Simonette decided that the congress will, as usual, conclude in him announcing the new ministerial candidates.

The changes made were:

Sahla Sabbagh got promoted to Deputies Leader, and she will replace Aini Haik in that position, and the new Whip will be Astrid Espinoza, former Secretary. The New Secretary will be Gentile Gialanella, currently an influential ULD MP. No other notable shifts within the party's structures were announced.

Before Simonette announced his new cabinet proposal, however, Del Gatto and Cappola held speeches, addressing both international and internal issues of Istalia, as well as the economy. Del Gatto, who is also the new candidate for Minister of Finance, announced that at the beginning of the next parliamentary term, the ULD will do everything to introduce a regressive tax system, while Elmo Cappola said that the party will lobby for the privatization of healthcare, as well as the decrease of medicine for lethal diseases.

Image
Many have noticed the recent tensions on the line between Del Gatto (above) and Cappola (below), and noted that it is likely due to the fact that they are the biggest forces in the ULD currently, after Simonette.

Image
They are also, however, candidates for Ministers, which improves their situation, and shows that Simonette trusts them.

They were followed by the acting leaders of the party; Elena Vespa-Baldassare and Erardo Candela, who mostly spoke about big budget cuts and further federalisation, a notion that both clearly support. Candela additionally said that "when he'll head Istalian schooling", the education system will be reviewed, and that he will try to popularize home education, a theme that is present in his latest book series. Vespa-Baldassare, however, said that she would consider the AI's proposal regarding the Istalian Federation.

Image
Candela has always been a big popularizer of home education, especially among the gentility

Image
If, as planned, Vespa-Baldassare would, in fact, assume the office of Minister of Internal Affairs, then she could push for the fulfilment of the proposition

However, the main part of the congress was Simonette's unveiling of his Ministerial candidates, chosen out of a carefully planned pool of surnames, ranging from ULD raised favourites to outsiders and nonpartisans.

Those were as follows:

Foreign Affairs: Islam Shamon-Baz, current Minister of Finance, and the ULD's ambassador in many meetings of Liberal and Libertarian parties around the world. As the Minister of Finance, he gained experience in representing the nation. Currently, he is deemed as a "convert", as he joined Simonette's loyalist camp.

Internal Affairs: Elena Vespa-Baldassare, the ULD's Deputy Chairperson, the successor to her father's grandeur within the party and ex-minister of Education and Culture. She has the experience in administration and a strong position.

Finance: Carlo Del Gatto, former Minister of Health, currently a Minister without Portfolio and the Deputy Prime Minister, he is a Simonette loyalist and one of the Chairperson's most trusted men.

Defence: Najeer el-Saladin, current Minister of Foreign Affairs, four years ago he was the candidate for Defence. Ex-Senator and Senate Whip of the ULD, Saladin was also a colonel in the army.

Justice: Miriam Pellegrini, current President of the Chamber of Deputies, once the ULD's National Coordinator, Pellegrini is a lawyer, and the ex-Deputy Mayor of the Capital, she is also the party's Justice Spokesperson.

Infrastructure and Transport: Aini Haik, ULD's current Deputies Leader, she was also the Ministerial Candidate for this position during the last congress. She is an ecologist and city architect.

Health and Social Services: Elmo Coppola, the ULD's National Coordinator and Del Gatto's big rival, the man is also a neuropsychiatrist, leader of the Parliament's Health Commission and "Manfrin's spawn".

Education and Culture: Erardo Candela, Simonette's biggest loyalist and supposed future heir, Candela is a popular fantasy writer and pop culture icon, as well as a ULD Vice-Chairperson.

Science and Technology: Sahla Sabbagh, she was once the party's youth wing chairperson, and a candidate in the presidential preelection race within the party, now Sabbagh is known as a promising figure within the party.

Food and Agriculture: Diana Falanga, also once the Party's youth wing chairperson, Falanga currently serves as the President of the Liberal Democrats.

Environment and Tourism: Eros Zanussi, the grandson of Mario Zanussi, past supposed presidential candidate and a representant of the ULD's most ecologically-aware wing.

Trade and Industry: Majd Ghanem, current Minister of Trade and Industry, Ghanem is a web developer and a businessman, and a specialist in the IT sector.

After he announced the Cabinet candidates, and whilst he closed the congress Congress, Simonette spoke of how he supports many of the Federalist proposals, similarly to Vespa-Baldassare and Candela, and how he wishes further cooperation between the two parties on an economic level. He also announced that he will invite the other Istalian parties to dialogue about a possible rewrite of the constitution, which he deemed as old and n longer fitting, raising applause.

Image
Prime Minister Simonette also announced that, unsurprisingly, he is the party's candidate for the office of Prime Minister

The Congress itself, however, was closed by President Reale, who joined the ULD during their meeting, to take the party's blessing and it's appointment as the presidential candidate, a seat for which he will run for the second time.

Image
President Reale also announced that he will consider campaigning for the introduction of the office of Vice-President, something that the ULD always supported

Election, the MFI became the third parties, and became decisive to form a government. Accord with PCI of a budjet and tax reform, but any accord for a government

VINESIA - Grow the support for the federalist/progressivist cause for the Federalists becoming the third party of nation, overtakin the Alternativa Istaliana. The MFI became one of the party what are decisive to form a new government, the congress is divided at half if mantain the great coalition or try the new coalition with communists tring to dialogate with communists, and see if a IPI/communists coalition reach to govern a nation in these four years. In the next month will be clear if this will born a great-coalition bis, o are a new left coalition, or a another great coalition without MFI.
The Movement will decide in the next months the eventual alliances. Actually the congress is divided. Now the confederal direction, will wait eventual contacts from ULD and Republicans.

The confederal congress also give a green light to an accord with communist for a budjet and progressive taxation reform (with a max rate of 35%, far as the max 50% proposed by communists). Th

As predicted the MFI maintain the governorship of Trivendito, is the third consecutive time that Tosatto Michele are reelect on the chair. Good results wiht thirds position on Padagna and Silicia.

ULD: FRACTURED BUT WHOLE

Image
Will Simonette's leadership be contested?

The Liberal Democrats, after their slim victory in the last election, have braced to form a more federalist coalition, one that would work towards creating the Istalian Federal Republic, or at least it's fundaments. That is the line that Simonette and much of the leadership have taken, noting that federalism is an integral part of liberalism and that it is giving democracy to the people, so they have the authority to decide for themselves.
However, it seems as if a faction within the party has formed that, although it does support federalism and decentralisation, at least softly opposes the idea of a federal republic, with the centre of that faction somewhere between Sabbagh and Cappola.

Another possible outcome would be a situation where Simonette's leadership would be, in fact, strongly contested, a situation which never really took place in the ULD, as usually all factions within the party unite to support the leader to give their voters a strong signal of unity. The last and the first time that something similar took place was when Mario Zanussi defeated Pietro Corsini for the ULD leadership, even though Corsini was never the ULD's chairperson. However, Mile did endorse him and say that he "expects the party members to support him". And then again, the Party Chairpeople traditionally resign if the party loses the majority or scores a bad result.

Although it seems unlikely that Cappola would challenge Simonette for leadership, with him winning being even less likely, it is possible that a lesser known candidate could possibly challenge him, although with not-so-impressive results. The election, however, will take place later next year.

The ULD was always divided more by personal reasons rather than those of the political kind, as with Manfrin and Simonette, Vespa-Baldassare and Cartucci or Mile and Zanussi, with the ideological divide rather being based on the differences between the more and the less radical members.

IL RADICALE
Organo stampa ufficiale dell'Alleanza Radicale

The Official Press of Radical Alliance

The 10th AR Congress confirms Tancredi together with Vitali and Ciriello, the Spokeperson: "We are working to form a center-left government and we will continue to pressure the Federalists"

ROMULA - The national congress held in January has given new confidence to Tancredi and his team formed by former Spokesperson Valentina Vitali and the Chamber's Whip Giorgia Ciriello. During the Congress it was mainly debated the ongoing consultations to form the new Government.
Tancredi has confirmed that Alleanza Radicale is lobbying mainly on the Federalists to accept the proposal launched by AR and already supported by the Communist Party, namely to create a government that focuses on:
- Workers rights
- Improvement of Public Health Service
- Budgetary and fiscal reforms to introduce an expansive budgetary policy, so to best meets the needs of public services and which funds research and important public projects, and to reintroduce a progressive income tax system.

In addition, the National Spokesperson has confirmed that Radical Alliance will oppose a radical federal reform of the nation but will continue to support devolutive policies in favor of the regions on different issues that the regions will probably manage better thanks to their greater proximity to the citizen and with local realities. The Party also advanced the proposal for a reform of the Senate in order to give greater weight to the political forces of the regional Governors, but in addition to this it stated that it will categorically oppose the devolution of the most important general issues, such as health regulation, regulation of workers' rights, general economic policy and foreign trade and above all security and justice, continuing to state that national legislation would be necessary on these issues, even in a federal state.

But among the main interests that push the Radicals to enter a government there is certainly the foreign policy: Tancredi has in fact criticized from the stage the current government and especially the Presidency of the Republic, judged simply as "silent and guilty of ignoring the numerous events that are destabilizing Majatra at international level. If this Government and especially the President of the Republic do not intend to make hear the voice of Istalia, perhaps too interested and focused on internal disputes of the President's party, well, a Government that is really interested in asserting the role of the country at the international level will have to do it!"[/quote]

Maksimuma Sarrentina Launches in Istalia
March 8th, 4367
By Sabino Granillo

Image

Maksimuma, the tech giant of Zardugal, launches it first cross-national branch in Istalia.
Istalia, known for its very liberal corporate tax rate and no regulation on businesses, has been a region that Maksimuma has wished to invest in for a while now.

"Istalia is a vitel and wealthy nation, and is the prefect testing ground for Maksimuma," says Maksimuma President Francisko Okzida. "Istalia also is the prefect firing table for further international investments."

While this seems to be a great move on the part of Maksimuma, some are skeptical.
"Maksimuma has had an unrestricted reign over the economy of West Majatra for years," says Battista D'Esposito (CEO of Magistro-Leonardi). "By letting Maksimuma into our nation, it would be like letting a cancer into the body. It would start out small but over time it will monopolize all of our major industries."

What ever the results of the Maksimuma expansion, it looks like it will have a lasting impact on Istalia.

Imponenti manifestazioni nella capitale contro il Presidente della Repubblica; Bellinguer auspica l'unità della sinistra "a difesa della democrazia"
Great manifestation in the capital against the Head of State; Bellinguer wishes the unity of the left "to defend democracy"

Approximately 100,000 people demonstrated today in Romula, the istalian capital, to oppose the recent declarations by Antero Reale, who threatened a veto in case parliament approved the passage of P.d.l. 03/4367 proposed by the Communist Party of Istalia, concerning new stringent regulations of the labor market. Leading the event is the secretary of the PCI, the outgoing Endrigo Bellinguer, still active in the long phase of post-election consultations. "The President Reale has shown his true anti-democratic nature!" announces Bellinguer, "Here is the man to whom we should entrust the formation of the new government, here is, above all, the man who rises above the representatives of the istalian people, threatening to usurp the power of parliament, making waste paper the laws approved by a majority by the servants of the State! Our constitution does not provide for any veto, this is the measure that underlines the gravity of these statements.Never a president, in the contemporary era, had assumed such dictatorial positions, evident expression of the istalian high bourgeoisie who would like to further enslave the workers, an obvious expression of global capitalism that fears a shift of power in the country! I am grateful to the thousands of people present at this event, I also see representatives of our opponents, and I take this opportunity to launch a appeal: UNION OF THE LEFT TO GIVE A DEMOCRATIC AND PROGRESSIST GOVERNMENT TO THE COUNTRY! THE LEFT FOR THE DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY! "

VESPA-BALDASSARE: DUE TO RECENT COMPLICATIONS, WE WILL MOST LIKELY CONSIDER A NEW PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Image
n the last few years, Vespa-Baldassare has acted as the ULD's spokesperson, according to some

A mere few weeks before the ULD's general congress, on which the party was supposed to announce their support for the current president, Antero Reale, and Elena Vespa-Baldassare, the ULD's Chairperson-in-Parliament announced that, on the ULD's congress that is expected to be held later this month in Veruna, the party will most likely choose a new presidential candidate, something that wasn't announced beforehand, and as such, the decision was faced with surprise, with people interested in joining the race stating that it would make it impossible to gather enough signatures. However, it seems as if the minimum number of signatures will be lowered, resulting in a wider ballot. It is also possible that a race will be held between just the two individuals that will gather enough signature.

Another important thing that may take place on the congress is Prime Minister Simonette's resignment from the position of the party's candidate for Prime Minister, mostly due to the recent controversy with President Reale, and the fact that he wasn't able to effectively create a cabinet. It is expected that Erardo Candela will replace him in that position, although recently, there were talks about the possibility that the Minister of International Affairs, Najeer el-Saladin, will replace him in that position.

Another thing very likely to happen is that Prime Minister Simonette will have gloves thrown underneath his feet and that he will be contested for his position as ULD Chairperson, by either Elmo Cappola, Elena Vespa-Baldassare or both. Currently, though, it seems as if the prior is a more likely candidate.

THE ULD ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENTIAL AND PRIME MINISTERIAL CANDIDATES

During the ULD's recent Congress, the Party's most notable members announced two things; the party's new candidate for the Office of Prime Minister, and, in the last day of the meeting, the new candidate for President.

The party's leadership, with Simonette foremost, has faced a wave of backlash and criticism in the latest days, especially during the Congress, however, the emotions did seem to be masked by the tight race for the seat of the Party's new Presidential Candidate which, this time, was organized in just one round of voting, as instantly the two candidates with the most gathered signatures advanced to it, and those were Miriam Pellegrini, the Party's long-term senator, the ex-candidate for Minister of Justice and once the President of the Lower Chamber, and Seif Maalouf, who already ran for the seat eight years ago, although with much less success than this time.

The vote was split, with just 4% going to the run's winner, however, that majority was enough for the candidate to assure their position as the Presidential Candidate, and that was the party's first female candidate since a long time, Miriam Pellegrini. Simonette, Vespa-Baldassare (both Elena and Hugo, who was, as always, present on the Congress) and Cappola congratulated the woman on her success, and announced their support.

However, the more mysterious part of the Congress was another race, one behind the stage. And that was the race for the seat of Candidate for Prime Minister and later, for Minister. That race concluded in an interesting way; the Delegates voted in a secret voting on the cabinet that will be supported by the ULD, and chose from and unrevealed list of ready cabinets, and the cabinet to win the vote was the one apparently supported by Simonette: the Shamon-Baz Cabinet.

Shamon-Baz, in the last day of the congress, confirmed the ministers of his cabinet, both heavyweights and less known names, but all linked to Simonette.

And those were:

Islam Shamon-Baz- Prime Minister. Now a rigorous Simonette loyalist, Shamon-Baz is one of his most trusted men.

Ines Saeli- Foreign Affairs. The Istalian Ambassador in Walruzia, once the party's Deputy, she also served as Petralia's advisor.

Erardo Candela- Internal Affairs. For a long time now the cooperation between Shamon-Baz and Candela has been known, however, must suspected that Candela himself was among the candidates for Prime Minister, and not a candidate for Minister. Candela has been a politician most of his life, all the time linked to the ULD.

Eros Zanussi- Finance. The Grandson of the Party's Ex-Chairperson, Zanussi is a banker and financier, and once a candidate for the party's presidential Candidate.

Mariano Lepera- Defence. Another grandson, but this time of the Ex-President, Oscar Lepera. Lepera junior, as he is called, served in the army for five years, and gained a lot of respect there for leading a large-scale rescue mission.

Seif Maalouf- Justice. As it seems, Maalouf may finally take a state position, however this time, that would be of the Minister of Justice and not President of the Republic.

Sara Steffani- Infrastructure. The Mayor of Genevia, a region that isn't really supportive of the ULD, is known for her administrative skills and ability to appeal to the more conservative voters.

Amru Saraf- Health. Cardiologist. He isn't really linked to the ULD in any way, he isn't even apart of the party.

Ezio Fontana- Education. He either isn't really linked to the ULD in any way.

Zufar el-Firman- Science and Technology. A businessman and ULD senator, el-Firman also serves as a Vice-Minister to Shamon-Baz.

Ilario Scarpa- Agriculture. Again, a Vice-Minister to Shamon-Baz, Scarpa is known as his right-hand man, although not necessarily a loyalist, more of a man-for-hire within the bounds of the ULD.

Lisa Arrace- Environment. An environmentalist, TV host and journalist, Arrace is, besides being an animal sympathic, a friend of the Liberal Democrats.

Aida Gambino- Industry. This time, an advisor to Shamon-Baz, Gambino has her voice her voice heard loud and clear within the ministry and is beloved as one of the ULD's promising new stars.

The DPU has called a leadership convention; above is a picture of the prepared convention hall.
The DPU has called in a leadership convention to select a Party General Secretary which will serve for a four year term. The convention will take place in Romula, and 4,000 delegates have been selected. There are three candidates for the position, which will adversely affect the party's political positions for the next four years. The three candidates are:
Image
CHIARINA POZZI: Ms. Pozzi is a prosecutor in Romula. She is known to hold more liberal viewpoints. Currently whip counts suggest she is the frontrunner to win the position. She is currently 35 years old.
Image
TINO BERTOLINI: Mr. Bertolini is the founder of the Istituto di Politica, a center-left policy institute. He is currently 67 years old. The current whip count suggests that he will finish in a close second to Ms. Pozzi.
Image
RANIA SAMARA: Ms. Samara is a 25 year old civil rights attorney in Nepoli. She has been the attorney in a number of civil rights cases arguing for the discriminated. She is a liberal candidate. She is expected to finish last in voting.
