BREAKING NEWS: Mass resignation among the ranks of the Armed Forces!
More than two thirds of the officers, including the General Staff, presented their mass resignations this morning in protest for the disbandment of the Armed Forces of Istalia

8 December 5047

COLSAMIA - Like a bolt from the blue, the news is leaving the nation, the government and most of the political forces astonished: in protest with the coming reform of the Armed Forces proposed by the League for Indipendence of Quanzar, almost 34,000 officers of the Armed Forces of Istalia, out of 41,000 active, submitted their resignations to the Ministry of Defense this morning.

In representation of the resigning officers, not just any group of officers went to meet the Minister of Defense Susanna Langella but the entire General Staff of the Armed Forces did: General Piero Barbero, Chief of Defense Staff, General Nicola Casu, Chief General Staff of the Army, Admiral Ismaele Khashoggi, Chief of Staff of the Navy, General Nina Sangiorgio, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and General Federico Tarquini, General Commander of the National Gendarmerie.

In the various facilities of the Armed Forces, offices, barracks, depots and practically in every operational station of the Gendarmerie (at least one is present in every single municipality of the country), throughout the day there were continues parades of men and women who symbolically, with a solemnity more suited to funerals, they freed themselves from various ranks and badges of the armed forces by depositing them at the foot of the flags of their respective corps presenting the last solemn farewell, the only places where the old colors of Istalia could still be seen.

There have been very few and sporadic occasions that have seen senior officers intervene, resignations having been submitted on the same day of this blatant abandonment which would have instead required an adequate period of notice, but beyond that it must be said that those few officers who opposed it literally did not have the means to stop their subordinates as insubordination spread among the troops too during the day. The National Gendarmerie, which are entrusted with the functions of military police, turned out to be together with the Navy the armed force that saw the greatest defections and that even faster than the other forces began to see the mass abandonment of positions in the evening even among the non-commissioned officers and the troop.

The members of the General Staff, on the other hand, have already declared that they will free themselves of ranks and badges only in a month, at the expiry of the usual notice period, but during this period they will not exercise their usual functions and therefore will not take any measures against increasing defections between officers and troops.

With the journalists who in a very short time besieged the entrance to the Palazzo di Travertino, the Chief of Staff of Defense Piero Barbero presented himself for the last time in front of the cameras reading a statement that was probably ready for months:

After long reflections and heated debates among the leaders of all components of the Armed Forces, it is with a boulder on our hearts that my colleagues and I have decided to leave our positions in the hands of the Minister of Defense and to submit our resignations as members of the Armed Forces.
Unfortunately, the impossibility of maintaining faith in the solemn oath we made in defending the nation has become evident when precisely the nation has now been destroyed by the will of this and the previous governments with which it is now evident the impossibility of working together as well as the impossibility to obey.
Although we have endured constant criticism and humiliation over the past decades trying to serve the country at the best of our ability, today the Armed Forces have been reduced to a scapegoat and sacrificial victim of political forces driven by fear and resentment, a retaliation against those citizens and compatriots who did not want to give up in the face of the abuses and suppression by part of fanatics and extremists.
As it is now clear how uncomfortable our position is for the current political establishment and to save time for those who are dangerously and selfishly undermining the defense capabilities of the country, in conscience my colleagues and I have preferred to withdraw rather than become accomplices of the destruction of institutions that for centuries with pride, courage and loyalty have defended the country, the people and the values that have made this nation great.
Furthermore, we cannot blame the countless officers as well as the valiant troop for their willingness to follow the example of their commanding officers, because the shame and the humiliation of the events that have taken place in recent decades that have gripped our consciences are felt in equal measure both by the simple soldier and by the highest leaders of the Armed Forces.
We have sworn to defend Istalia and the Istalians even with our lives, but alas they have been corrupt and fed by radical and maximalist fringes, totally incapable and opposed to dialogue and compromise, guided only by the blind pursuit of power and promoters of a true dictatorship of the majority, although in the absence of real numbers that reflect this situation in light of the disappointing electoral results of recent years, in contempt of the sensitivity and requests of a considerable portion of the population that is still alive and present in the country, we now feel ourself incapacitated to respect that oath that today we can only consider definitively dissolved because it was betrayed first and above all by those who destroyed the country and who are tarnishing and distorting a millennial history of unity, brotherhood and tolerance, a history of struggles and sacrifices for defend this land from those who have tried in every way to destroy it.
Our decision, and I am sure it's the same for many loyal officers and soldiers, must not be interpreted as a sign of giving up our will to defend the country, since today what is at risk is an ideal and I assure you that as long as there will be people ready to carry up the banner of that ideal, this will never die and it is precisely what at least I will continue to do.

Thank you

Really harsh words from General Barbero that certainly will not allow the current hegemonic political forces to sleep peacefully. The soon former Chief of Defense Staff, in the light of his words, seems to be willing to actively engage in the public, and therefore political, sphere to support his clear positions and it will not be a surprise if he should soon enter the ranks of Identity and Unity party with which it clearly shares its ideas and whose foundation and not indifferent political result in the last elections, according to many analysts and personalities close to anti-federalist movements, was the reason why the League for Independence of Quanzar, the most radical and maximalist of the two independence parties, decided to propose the abolition of the Armed Forces of Istalia and their replacement with separate Armed Forces for the Peninsula and the Island respectively, evidently fearful that the Istalian armed forces could assure support for what has been scornfully called "istalianism".

But it is not only some generals ready to enter the political arena who must cause concern the Government of the Alarian Popular Front and the League for Independence of Quanzar: in fact, within a few days the country will find itself practically without effective armed forces and clearly it will take time for the Armed Forces of Quanzar and Alaria to have full capacity.
The General Staff has however ensured that all those officers and troops employed in the strategic defense of the country, in short those in charge of managing the national nuclear defense capabilities, as well as the units deployed along the borders and the coast guard, will maintain positions until the country's nuclear capabilities are definitively dismantled, as envisaged by the reform, and until both in Quanzar and in Alaria the respective forces cannot replace them, but it will still be a rather small number of forces compared to the mass of resigning military members.

Another really worrying problem will be the State's ability to continue to guarantee effective public order: for centuries the National Gendarmerie has carried out police functions throughout the national territory such as to become the true face of public order for millions of Istalians. The relationship between the Gendarmerie and the population and society has always been very strong and traditionally the gendarmerie has been an important model of behavior within the Istalian culture and has always enjoyed great respect and affection widely spread among the population, regularly referred to as the "most loved" armed force by the Istalians. Moreover, it was certainly no coincidence that both the bodies defending the Presidents of the Istalian Republics and the Imperial Guard of the Empire were specialized bodies of the National Gendarmerie, certainly the most loyal among the military.

Numerous parliamentarians from both the Government and the League have already shouted about treason asking the Ministry of Defense for measures to be taken against those they consider to be deserters. Unfortunately, if the Government would like to act against the resigning personnel as against deserters, it would find itself forced to legally pursue up to over 250,000 men (almost two-third of the current forces available [OOC: given the current ranking of Istalia, I imagine that the numbers indicated in the wikia pages, which in any case have always been purely indicative, are no longer valid and therefore I imagined a significant reduction from about 750 thousand to a maximum of 350 thousand men, numbers calculated in the past also bearing in mind that for the Roleplay for Istalia it was recognized a population of over 150 million people]) with very compromised capacities to counter all this: it is in fact the task of the Gendarmerie by law to prosecute the military guilty of any crime but it goes without saying that with the Gendarmerie that is finding the greatest number of defections, the Government's ability to intervene will be seriously compromised. The involvement of civilian public order forces for military crimes, i.e. desertion, treason, etc... is not legally permitted, something that should leave the Government no other chance than to take note of the resignation and obviously no proceedings could be opened against those people who will be soon civilians, dishonorably discharged or not.

Thousands and thousands of men-at-arms who will return home as early as tomorrow, frustrated, angry and resentful and which many analysts expect to find soon supporting and demonstrating in favor of pro-istalian positions on the streets of the country. Outside barracks and installations, in a short time, numerous groups of Istalian unitarian supporters gathered applauding the resigning soldiers who, supported by the crowd, in numerous cases did not shy away from carrying out short scenes of protest to reaffirm their positions. With no more oaths or obligations to be respected therefore, a really delicate situation that could become a powder keg ready to explode at any moment.

BREAKING
Appearance of the Councillor of Defence
Hon. Susanna Langella makes an official statement regarding the latest acts carried out by numerous members of the Istalia armed forces

The Federal Council of Quanzar and Alaria has left in the hands of the Defense representative, Susanna Langella, the words to act in relation to the recent incidents in the Army of Quanzar and Alaria after the approval of the new law. The Councilor, who has appeared with a serious face and flanked by the already appointed new commanders of the air, sea and land forces of both Quanzar and Alaria, have decided to read an official statement:

Image

"Comrades, countrymen, brothers and sisters of Quanzar and Alaria alike,
Today we woke up with the news that many of the members of the Istalia armed forces have decided to resign from their positions, positions on which they took a solemn oath, in protest against the so-called "Demilitarization Act".

In the first place, to announce that a sanctioning file will be effectively opened to all those members who have chosen to leave their posts immediately, thus breaking the current legislation, and action will be taken through rapid judicial means using military records. They will be given a period of 72 hours to reconsider and return to their positions before proceeding with it.

Secondly, to communicate that the resignation of all these members of the armed forces of the extinct Istalia in the face of a reform that is mainly aesthetic - and against which the government party has abstained - does nothing more than give ground to the argument put forward. by the League for the Independence of Quanzar that indeed, all these members were not due to the homeland, but to their own idea of the istalian nation, and therefore, to be dangerous for the stability of our nations. It is discouraging to observe that, instead of reading the reform carefully, as others have done, they have decided to act on their own, letting themselves be carried away by rumors and their own preconceptions, and instead of understanding that the reform merely distributed the old Istalia's army BETWEEN THE NATIONS OF QUANZAR AND ALARIA, have assumed any other idea and have acted in accordance with it, forgetting all the sacred military and civil oaths.

Third, the government will immediately approve the granting of military powers to the police forces, until this situation is resolved.

From the government, we want to repeat that we give a period of 72 hours to all those members of the armed forces to return to their posts without any sanction and we can turn the page of this abhorrent action that could even be classified as criminal, therefore in terms of each and every one of the soldiers who have resigned from their post have decided to abandon the very citizens they swore to protect to their fate. We remind you that the Army is owed to the people and to the State, and that it is the State that has been popularly elected by the people, regardless of the decision they make. They would do well to remember these words.

All the military know what to do to exercise their legitimate right to protest, and they also know perfectly well that this is not the way to do it. If they believe that in this way they are going to intimidate this government in any way, they are very wrong. In the first place, because it was not this government that has taken the measure, but the FEDERAL PARLIAMENT, the highest representative body of the citizen's will. And secondly, because if indeed all these soldiers who have resigned have done so because now each of our nations will be equipped with its own detachment, which will lead to a much more effective action, and they prefer to align themselves politically with an ideology. In concrete terms, they are better off outside than inside a supposedly neutral body. They have been portrayed alone, and History will be in charge of remembering them as such. Do not expect an apology from this government, which HAS ALWAYS DEMONSTRATED its negotiating spirit and its ability to reach agreements, and could have shown it once again. But instead, they have decided to act unilaterally, leaving no more leeway for this government than that already specified.

Thank you very much to all.

Susanna Langella
Consigliera alla Difesa (Counselor of Defence of the Federal Council of Quanzar and Alaria)"

Mrs. Langella has also confirmed that after meeting with various representatives of the armed forces, they have agreed to a salary increase for members of both forces, which should be reflected in the next budgets of her government.

Some, however, do not seem very happy. Sources close to the President of the Federal Council Sofia Barberi affirm that she is "terribly disappointed" with the visible partisan actions carried out by members of the armed forces, whom she has privately accused of taking part in the political fray by positioning themselves unequivocally on the side of the Identity and Unity party and thus contravening any oath to the State.

"The forms of organization of one or several States come or go, but their institutional components remain in themselves, being loyal to their own essence. Otherwise, they are traitors."

Some speak that the debate within the Federal Council is evident, with the majority of its members - among which are those of Internal Affairs and Finance - pushing to accuse the defectors of rebellion and sedition charges, and a few - Tammaro Capozzoli, from Justice, or Susanna Langella herself, two of the most powerful Counselors in this issue - who advocate reaching out to them to redeem themselves from their actions.

Mrs. Barberi, whose own father belonged to the Istalian Air Force, who named Mrs. Langella as Counselor of Defence two years ago after she left the military -being a high ranking official herself -, and a personal acquaintance of many of the officers who have resigned throughout the day, would be in the middle of the dispute at this time.

Giovanni Maria Brunori della Scala supports the resigning military and warns the Goverment
The soon former Chieff of Defence Staff Barbero criticizes the words by Councillor of Defence Langella: "a mainly aesthetic reform? 'Abolition' means abolition and the law now is clear, they reformed it!"

12 December 5047

COLSAMIA - The earthquake that is shaking the country is likely to be very far from a conclusion and with the expiry of the ultimatum that Defense Councilor Susanna Langella presented to the resigning soldiers three days ago, the former Chief Defense Staff Piero Barbero, with another joint statement from the leaders of all the Armed Forces, replied to the Government as follows:

It is with the utmost sadness and utter bewilderment that we learned of the threats launched by the Defense Councilor against men and women who have decided to put their office back in the hands of the authorities.
But it is with even greater bewilderment that we underline the hypocrisy and serious confusion, if we can call it confusion, which reign at the top of the federation's power: the interpretation by the Government is not in the least acceptable, because it is an interpretation, of the Demilitarization Decree approved by just 26% of the federal parliament and the attempt by the Popular Front's Government to discharge all responsibility and to make the League for the Independence of Quanzar the only promoter is not acceptable, since their silence does not it could be interpreted as anything other than assent.
Furthermore, it is unthinkable to accept the interpretation of the reform as a "mainly aesthetic reform" because the Decree establishes the abolition, clearly written black on white, and not the reform or the apportionment of the Armed Forces of Istalia into the two new Armed Forces of Quanzar and Alaria, but it is stated the endowment of Quanzar and Alaria with ITS OWN armed forces and it has already been declared that "training new armed forces from scratch and appointing new officers is bound to take a significant amount of time".
Equally unequivocal are the tones used in the drafting of the law, animated only by the desire to humiliate, insult and denigrate the Istalian Armed Forces and literally cast out their members clearly indicated as potential traitors. Perhaps we should report letter by letter what is expressed into the Law Decree regarding the Armed Forces, "which could capitalize the nostalgia for the days of Istalian rule at the right moment. All it takes is one crisis, a failure to form a cabinet perhaps or an economic downturn, and the military IS SURE to come gunning in to "restore order"
The Government accuses us now of treason towards the State and the people, but where the Government was when the Armed Forces were identified in such a clear and concise way as a coeval of traitors already in existence and as an already existing threat to YOURS States? How dare the government could pretend that the Istalian Armed Forces and their members could still be willing to work for and with civil authorities which consider them to be subversives, terrorists and criminals?
What is sad and alas revealing the true face of this political establishment is that now the government is ready to break the law, the same law they wanted and reformed, to force thousands of people to return to serve a master despised and who despises them, threatening them with coercive measures guided only by resentment and a desire for revenge.
These men, of whom I am the first and with whom I am also ready to risk my own freedom, have every right to resign from the Armed Forces which by now the law considers as abolished and when today the law does not impose no longer any mandatory military or civilian national service. Or does the government have another interesting interpretation of this reform?
Finally, another question is addressed by us to the Government: are you really ready to go and take, judge and incarcerate over 250,000 people? Even if only the officers had to pay, and I and my colleagues are ready to do so, is the government ready to start a witch hunt against 41,000 people?
The Federal Parliament, as underlined by the Government, has clearly expressed contempt for these men, has clearly expressed the will to get rid of them because they are dangerous subversives, therefore why now those same political forces, since we see no difference between the FPA and the LIQ, demand obedience from whom they wanted to get rid of?
These men and women now want to go home, to their loved ones and start a new life, free from the orders and impositions of a political establishment that in all honesty, perhaps one of the few moments of pure honesty that have been seen in our politics since decades, wanted to get rid of them, disarming and marginalizing them.
Well, you have reached your goal, now leave these people alone and if you really want to act, I and the other Chiefs of Staff of the dissolved Armed Forces of Istalia are ready to take full responsibility for what happened and we are ready to answer for it in front of the law.

Shortly after the release of the statement by the General Staff, Identity and Unity's leader Giovanni Maria Brunori della Scala appeared before the journalists at the headquarters of the party who had already expressed full moral support to the resigning soldiers the day after December 8, defending what he indicated as a choice guided by conscience. These are his words:

Once again I can only find myself in full agreement with the now former Chief of Staff Barbero. The government can be as indignant as it wants but it is only they who are responsible for this situation. When fanaticism, radicalism and deafness towards those who do not think like you are the cardinal points that guide political action, how can we be surprised if the consequences reach such proportions?
As Identity and Unity party we are ready to assist by any means, primarily legal, anyone in the coming days and months will find themselves persecuted for their choice and we are ready to undermine by any legal means even the totally ridiculous statements of Councilor Langella on the Demilitarization Decree in which, as already underlined by General Barbero, does not envisage any reorganization, but the abolition of an organism first and its replacement with new organisms, voluntary armed forces, then.
Yet now the government demands that those men, although released from their oath as a logical consequence of the abolition of the Armed Forces of Istalia, which no longer actually exist, continue to respect the orders and coercively agree to "voluntarily" join new founded, and not reformed, defense forces.
Rather than threatening to accuse 250,000 people of treason, why does the government not ask for an explanation from whoever wanted and voted for that text? Their friends from the League!
But above all, is the government really ready to increase the anger and resentment of 250,000 men able to bear arms? Are you really ready to risk pulling the rope so hard? Now they can also run for cover by militarizing the police forces, but do they really think it's wise to unleash them on those 250,000 men? Because we don't think that such an act it is only to defend the nation, exactly like the Demilitarizing Decree it was not just a piece of legislation but it was a veritable retaliation act against the formation of Identity and Unity. Do they really want to make the tension so high?
Those men, those officers, despite the anger, the offenses and despite how the country has been reduced, rather than staining themselves with acts that would have been much more serious, they simply decided they wanted to go home and their commanders of higher rank are now ready to take full responsibility, continuing to respect the role and institutions of this federation despite the profound contempt shown to them.
These biased political forces that for years have covered their eyes and ears in the face of the demands of millions of people should now begin to understand the value of compromises and also to accept to take a step backwards for the good and interests of the country, of the whole country, and not just those who support them.
Did you want to get rid of the Armed Forces of Istalia? Well, you have achieved your goals, you have got rid of hundreds of thousands of armed people who you thought were dangerous and disloyal, now it is time for Alaria and Quanzar, as established by the Decree you have passed, to start dealing with their new Armed Forces and I advise them not to waste time because, especially when relying on volunteers, it takes time to enlist, train, and field new soldiers, new officers and new organizational structures. But why do you expect these people you wanted to get rid of now to automatically join your new armies? To defend the country and the people? Which country? Which people? Those people have sworn to defend Istalia, to protect the Istalians. But according to your new political paradigm, there is no Istalia, there are no Istalians! Wasn't it just an "artificial states"? Were not the Istalians an oppressing and supremacist ethnic group, a dangerous minority to be despised and erased? Weren't those people referred to as the last dangerous vestiges of such millennial oppression? Now, instead, do you pretend them back? Do you pretend they serve you while you are holding the whip?
All this is truly comic, indeed tragicomic, the apotheosis of hypocrisy! And finally I add that it is really sad how the Government wants to leverage on material needs and difficulties that these people, as indeed the rest of the country, have been facing for almost a century. Probably this salary sweetener will convince someone, and I will certainly not blame those who accept, but it will only be the umpteenth proof of the hypocrisy and moral inadequacy that distinguishes this government and its accomplices.

LIVE: Snap elections announced!
The President of the Federal Council calls the citizens to cast their ballots after the recent conflict with the military

Image
Sofia Barberia making the announcement from her seat

Quanzar and Alaria is headed to snap elections. This has been announced by the President of the Federal Council, Sofia Barberi, in the Federal Assembly, which is expected to approve the proposal since the Popular Front of Alaria has the majority of the votes of the Chamber.

With a face of circumstance, Mrs. Barberi has said that she made the decision after noting the unrest existing in some sectors of the population - in veiled reference to the current open conflict with a large part of the now defunct Army of Istalia - in order to give a voice to the citizenship.

"Comrades, after approving it by a qualified majority of 10 to 3 votes of the Federal Council of Quanzar and Alaria, I have informed the President of the Federal Assembly and the Presidents of the nations of Quanzar and Alaria that this government is going to present a petition for early elections at this time. We want in this way to give a voice to our citizens so that they can speak out on the actions of this government, and they are once again the ones who take the reins of this nation. "

According to internal sources, the three members who have opposed were the Counselors of Justice, Defense and Internal Affairs, who would have asked that before pressing the nuclear button, the unconditional acceptance of the results be negotiated with the military. However, these words seem to have fallen on deaf ears, and the petition for snap elections is currently being voted on in the Chamber, from which these same three Councilors have absent themselves in protest.

In this way, a law in which the government had no role, since it was approved by the Federal Assembly with the sole support of the League for the Independence of Quanzar, may bring down the Popular Front of Alaria government.

Constitutional experts warn that this can set a dangerous precedent, as it shows the military that power is in their hands and that they can make and break at will the legitimate and democratic will of a nation. After knowing the announcement, the President of Alaria, Mia de Giacomo - also from the Popular Front of Alaria -, has made her own appearance to report her opposition to the electoral advance using the same argument, and asking for more forcefulness against some soldiers to whom he has described as "coup plotters" and "terrorists".

In any case, the electoral call is already in the voting process, approved except for last minute surprise, and the polls seem to point in all directions, leaving a completely open scenario.

Electoral results are in; resignations handed by Barberi and Di Giacomo
Identity and Unity becomes the most voted party and gets a majority in the Federal Assembly; FPdA ousted from governments of both nations

Image
FPdA voters following the election results in Pontolasch, Alarian capital city

After the announcement of the snap elections in the Union of Quanzar and Alaria, many wondered what result these elections would yield. Last night that doubt was resolved: with 100% of the votes counted, Identity and Unity was declared the winning party in the elections, after taking almost 55% of all the votes cast and largely obtaining this victory thanks to the overwhelming results in the regions of Nicoma (Alaria) and Fidelia (Quanzar), where it has exceeded 85% of the votes. Although in the rest of the regions it has been surpassed by the Popular Front of Alaria (it has only achieved 14% in Ferano and 28% in Trivendito, Quanzar, and 40% in Cisavugli, Alaria), the results in these two regions they have been enough to grant them a vast absolute majority in the Federal Assembly to do and undo as they please. In addition, thanks also to these two regions, Identity and Unity has also been rewarded with the heads of government of the two nations, ousting the FPdA from both positions. The Popular Front of Alaria has obtained 33% of the votes, while the League for the Independence of Quanzar has had to settle for 13%.

After knowing the results, the federal secretary of the FPdA and still President of the Federal Council, Sofia Barberi, has announced her immediate cessation of all her political positions, both at the national level and in the party, ensuring that although the results are not terrible, the imminent loss of government to Identity and Unity is "entirely her responsibility," and she therefore accepts that she cannot continue to lead the party she has led for 14 years any longer.

In Alaria, the election results have taken many by surprise. Although the polls predicted a close fight between the FPdA and IeU, the results of Nicoma - which has barely granted 4 seats to the FPdA - have sentenced the government of the nation, in which the IeU has obtained a comfortable absolute majority with 146 seats , the FPdA 63 and LIQ has taken 21. In the squares of the capital, many did not leave their astonishment, but some already dared to distribute blame.

"I think it's the mouth that has made President Di Giacomo (Mia Di Giacomo, until then President of Alaria) lose. She was doing a good job these years, but her words - about Identity and Unity - have greatly emboldened its voters, and this is the result "
, says Giulio Cassieri, a young architecture student and declared voter of the FPdA. The truth is that Mia Di Giacomo had been ruling the island of Alaria with successive absolute majorities since 5038, with just 31 years and a style that some political experts describe as "populist" and "close to youth." Now, Di Giacomo herself has also announced through her social networks that she accepts her results and moves to the side by congratulating her successor, but in her case she will continue in politics as leader of the opposition in the Alarian Republic.

With the vacancy of Sofia Barberi, a battle now opens within the Popular Front of Alaria to lead the party, with the following declared candidates and some that may still be unknown:

Lara Manganello
Image
She is considered as "the continuation option". Hailing from Alaria, she has served in the Assembly of the Republic during this last legislature, when she was signed by Mia Di Giacomo. A political analyst by profession and with a degree in political science, she advocates continuing on the path set by Sofia Barberi during the last legislatures. A priori she starts as the least favorite.

Alano Giaccone
Image
Also from Alaria, he has served as Minister of Health during this last legislature. He has a medical degree and is also a doctor of Immunology. His positions differ from those of Barberi, leaning more towards Di Giacomo's way of doing politics, and he is a star on social networks, from where he has sometimes cryptically criticized the federal government.

Guglielmo Marcella
Image
The oldest of the three already known candidates, he has been serving as a deputy for the FPdA since the first year they were represented. A miner by profession, he retired just before running for office. He is considered an intermediate profile between that of the other two candidates, who can attract voters from various points. He starts as the main favorite.

Landslide victory for Identity and Unity: "Istalians are not dead!"
New Federal President Giovanni Maria Brunori della Scala committed on the path of national reconciliation: "we must act together leaving behind us divisions and resentment"
Image
Istalian flags and istalian blue shirts (mainly from the highly loved former nation football team, a veritable important cultural symbol of once united Istalia)

21 July 5049

COLSAMIA - Great celebrations throughout the country followed the definitive announcement of Identity and Unity's landslide victory in the last elections and the green, white and red colors of the old Istalian flags as well as the Istalian blue adopted by Identity and Unity colored most of the squares of the Istalian cities.

The decision of the government led by Sofia Barberia to call snap elections in response to the serious civil unrest triggered by the conflict with the former Istalian armed forces has proved to be a real boomerang for the outgoing executive and in general for the independentist parties that today, after 17 years, are at the opposition for the first time.
During the night, as the partial results were turning to be definitive, one of the first to express his opinion on the electoral outcome was Francesco Marini, the newly elected President of the Region of Fidelia where Identità and Unity achieved the greatest success undermining the former hegemonic majority of the League:

Both the Popular Front and the League have been punished for their hysterical behavior of intolerance towards those people who have finally decided to say enough to the climate of fear and ethnic division that has torn the country in recent decades. Fear has pushed them to make decisions guided by the desire to repress and take revenge against those who have tried to raise their heads to reclaim their rights and their identity. Rash decisions that generated panic and that led the Front and the League to pass the buck each other, fracturing a front that seemed unbreakable only a few years ago.
I am particularly satisfied with the results of the elections here in Fidelia, a stronghold of the League until a few years ago, and I think we have been rewarded mainly because both the League and the Front have frightened the citizens with measures and words that really caused fear for much more drastic developments. That is why we must now show that another way is possible.

Certainly, however, the most awaited words since the official announcement of the results were those of the leader of Identity and Unity, Giovanni Maria Brunori della Scala, whose election as President of the Federal Council by the Federal Assembly is already scheduled for next week.
In front of the journalists who rushed to the party headquarters in the morning for the post-electoral press conference, Brunori expressed himself on the electoral result and explained what will be the principles that will guide the action of the next government:

First of all let me say it, and I really believe that many will have to admit it: Istalians are not dead!

We have shown the country and the world that despite many, too many efforts to deny it, that country we proudly called Istalia exists and it's alive, the same that for centuries has written pieces of world history.

I do not think I'm too presumptuous in saying that we have re-appropriated the truth and our true identity and I believe that starting from today everyone will have to change their approaches and have a less ideological but more practical and pragmatic vision.

This country is not only the country of Quanzar and Alaria, this is the country of Quanzar and Alaria and the country of Istalia. It's not just this or that, it's both.

But this was not just a victory for us, this was a great demonstration of how the value of tolerance is still alive in this country, the demonstration that this country cannot be guided with the fear and extremism of populism that, alas, it had become the compass of the action of the country's previous majoritarian political forces.

This is why I believe it is now time to offer the country a different path to undertake in the name of national reconciliation: we must act together leaving behind us divisions and resentment.
The next government will not take the reins of the country to deny what are now well-established and recognized realities and identities on the continent and on the island, it will not try to impose a forced return to the past.
Instead, we hope that rather than continuing to focus on what divides us, we will be able to focus on what unites us, on what has undeniably held this country together and cohesive for over three thousand years. We are not strangers, we are the same people but the extremism of few people pushed you to look at just what divide us and pushed us to rivendicate our identity and unity, the right to be Istalians and not necessarily just Alarians or Sarrentians, the right to be fierce of our history and to rivendicate the truth. We are brothers, we have shared and we share a lot in common, from the most folkloristic traditions to the love for the values of tolerance and freedom, solidity and democracy. May respect and the common good inspire us to be better.

Obviously, many of the questions received by Brunori concerned the conflict with the former Istalian Armed Forces and the civil unrest present in the country, although the electoral victory of IeU has already helped to ease the tension a little:

Naturally it will be the situation to which the Government will have to respond first of all and on two fronts: the fate of the resigning personnel of the former armed forces and the new defense structure of the country.

As already mentioned, it is not with revenge or the acts of retailation that these situation can be resolved. I have already prepared an act that I will present to the Federal Assembly as soon as I am elected with which the new Government will sanction the dissolution of the Armed Forces of Istalia and will consequently recognize to all former members the status of permanent leave, without any blame: in fact, the Government will not request any legal action by part of military and civilian judicial authorities against the personnel who left their posts during the mass resignation last December.
It will therefore be the Government's concern to present proposals for a possible recollection of this mass of civilian and unemployed personnel, proposals that will obviously fall within the greater objective of the reorganization of national defense.

We must get rid of the League's Demilitarization Decree and present a new project to shape the future armed forces of this country. The Government is ready to open a table for dialogue with the political forces of the opposition and to confront the authorities of Quanzar and Alaria.
Personally, I believe that the best solution is the establishment of a multi-level defensive organization with permanent armed forces at both federal and local levels that can cooperate to ensure overall coordination of the country's defense and security.

Last but not least the statements relating to the religious and economics reforms Brunori wishes to introduce in the country, themes which created further contrasts between IeU and the indipendentist parties, both guided by decidedly left-wing ideals:

[...]In compliance with the principles of tolerance and secularism, the state will return to being truly neutral towards religions, since it is clearly a hypocrisy to guarantee our citizens freedom and respect for their faith by taking sides openly in favor of a position that implicitly denigrates them.
In our country, religion more than ethnicity has often been a very strong element of identity for the countless souls of this nation and I believe that those who build their political particularl identities should also take into great consideration the different faiths of such identities.[...]

[...]Regarding the economy, the country has suffered the political decline of the last centuries, the isolation into which the conservative governments of the sixth republic have plunged the country but also the growing instability generated by the divisions fomented in the last decades.

We must restore confidence to the productive and entrepreneurial forces of the country, we must guarantee the existence and stability of a national market with certain national services and with certain rules that are common within the entire Federation. We must foster internal competition that is profitable for all the companies involved and that does not generate situations of unfair competition to the detriment of one or the other component.
We must therefore restore confidence to foreign investments and look for new commercial partners with whom we can establish a whole new network of relationships and businesses.
It's time to get this country moving and growing again![...]

Identity and Unity, furthermore, has also conquered both the Presidencies of the Republics of Quanzar and Alaria and if on the island it was Elisabetta Carillese who won the highest seat, a moderate who as a young law student fought within the independence movements before returning to unitarian positions and that she is expected to adopt a policy aimed at reconciling the idea of Alarianity and Istalianity, since Alaria has always been considered as the cradle of Istalia, in the Republic of Quanzar the Presidency was won by Alfio Corlione, a convinced unitarian from Terebbia, and who, unlike most of his colleagues, has always adopted a much more uncompromising and combative tone. Already in the aftermath of his investiture Corlione reaffirmed his intention, as touted throughout the whole election campaign, to rename the Republic of Quanzar in Serrentin Republic and causing assemblies of protesting Quanzaris outside the headquarters of the Government of the peninsula in Colsamia that caused moments of tension with the unitarian supporters, forcing the police forces to intervene to keep the two groups separate.

League Reforms
December 5049

Image

The snap elections in July led to a political earthquake in the Union of Quanzar and Alaria. The two independentist parties, the Popular Front of Alaria and the League for the Independence of Quanzar, have been thoroughly defeated, and Istalian nationalist and unionist Identity and Unity won by a landslide. The governments of both the Community of Quanzar and the Alarian Republic, as well as the Federal Council of the entire Union are now in the hands of Identity and Union. The cause of this Istalian nationalist victory seems quite straightforward. The handling of the Demilitarization Act and the executive implementation of its provisions, as well as a lack of coordination among the independentist parties, have allowed Identity and Union to capitalize on the disorganization of the independentist vote and present itself as a disciplined and mature political force.

In the immediate aftermath of the elections the Popular Front has seen a change in leadership, while the League, which lost the most in the last election, has now seen a much more thorough restructuring.

Image

Founded under the military dictatorship as a democratic opposition movement to the junta, the League was until this year led by the same activists that resisted the dictatorship and ultimately saw its collapse and the fall of Istalia and the birth of the Union. Most of the League's leaders had suffered prison and torture under the junta, and they were thus bitter enemies of the Istalian Armed Forces. This month, however, in spite of the prestige and popularity the League's old guard still command, the League decided to opt for a new and younger leadership. The newly-elected General Secretary of the League, Trivenditan defense attorney Addolorata De Vitto, thanked her predecessors in her acceptance speech, while announcing that the League will no longer "fight the battles of the past, but forge a new future for the Quanzarian Nation". In the eyes of the League's new leadership, their party's electoral failure is a result of the fact that the old guard were still fighting against the military dictatorship and not contesting peaceful elections in a stable federal democracy.

As part of the change in leadership the League also adopted a new name. Known until now as the "League for the Independence of Quanzar", the party's current goals and ideology were obscured by a goal it had already achieved, namely Quanzar's independence from Istalia. The newly rebranded "Quanzarian League" wishes instead to present itself as the main exponent of Quanzarism within the Union, and expresses its interest in forming coalitions with any political force that has Quanzar's best interests at heart, potentially including Identity and Union. When asked about the statement by the President of the Community of Quanzar Alfio Corlione that he wishes to rename Quanzar to the Sarrentine Republic, the League's general secretary Addolorata De Vitto replied that "we have survived 31 centuries of attempted cultural eradication, we will survive another 4 years of a radical Istalianist government. If Fiamma Bianca could not destroy Quanzar and drive our languages to extinction, neither will Mr. Corlione. But if he abandons his Istalianist delusions and is willing to work for the good of Quanzar, for which he was elected, he has our full support".

New leadership for the Popular Front of Alaria
Both nationalist movements - the League and the Front - now head to opposite directions after a change of leaderships following election defeat

January 5050

Alano Giaccone during one of his speeches in the Alarian Parliament

What seemed to be a quiet primaries for the candidate to preside over the Popular Front of Alaria, Guglielmo Marcella, who started in all the pools as the great favorite, have yielded unexpected results after the change in political direction of the Quanzarian League - formerly the League for the Independence of Quanzar - whose new leadership has advocated for an approach to Identity and Unity while respecting the Quanzarian identity.

This decision seems to have had its political reflection in the primaries of the Popular Front of Alaria, in which the most radical candidate has ended up beating the great favorite by obtaining more than 60% of the votes, without even the need for a second round.

Alano Giaccone, who from now on will replace Sofia Barberi as Federal Secretary of the FPdA, has already served as Minister of Health in Alaria. In addition to being a doctor, he has a doctorate in Immunology, and is very popular on social networks, where he knows how to handle himself perfectly. After his unexpected victory in the primaries, he wanted to make it clear that "the Barberi stage has passed" and that a new one is now beginning.

His election could mark a drastic turn in the politics of the FPdA, until now considered more open to negotiation with Identity and Unity than the League for the Independence of Quanzar. Now, things could turn, with the new leadership of the League more open to negotiations with the centralist government and the Front heading towards more radical positions.

According to some party members consulted, Mr. Giaccone's plans go first of all to endow the Front with a defined and clear ideology, even if this means alienating some of its traditional voters in both nations, and above all, keeping Alarianism alive. now that the new government is heading towards a more centralist period.

New National Defense and Recovery Plan for the Country
President Brunori della Scala says he is satisfied with the work done and applauds the efforts of the Central Government: "More united and cohesive we will restore dignity and prosperity to the nation"
Image

21 January 5053

COLSAMIA- A few months before the next general elections, President Brunori della Scala has placed his signature on the Bill approved by the Federal Assembly on the New National Defense and Security and is ready to do the same with the Recovery Plan proposed by the Government last year and which is finally close to being approved by the parliament.

With this new framework for the Defense, the Government led by Identity and Unity has totally subverted what was done by the previous independentist government by giving back to the Federal Government of the Union a defense apparatus. The new law, despite taking into account local claims and outlining a multi-level defense system, clearly reaffirmed the primary role of the Central Government vis-à-vis the Constituent Republics.
The Federal Defense Forces of Quanzar and Alaria (in shortly FDF) will be the combined military forces of the Union, consisting of four branches: the Federal Ground Forces, the Federal Air Force, the Federal Navy and the Federal Gendarmerie. The FDF will be highly specialized Armed Forces formed by volunteer career professionals and placed under the command of the Central Government with the Federal President as Commander-in-chief.
The Republics of Quanzar and Alaria will instead be equipped with National Guards, also made up of volunteers and in greater numbers than the FDF personnel. The internal organization of the National Guards has been totally delegated to the authorities of the two Republics, and in fact the National Guards will respond primary to their respective local Presidents, but for both the main objectives they will be the local defense, military reserve, response force for civil protection emergencies, tasks which therefore will require less specialization and training than the FDF.
Regarding the new Federal Gendarmerie, it will continue to hold the role of Military Police but will now deal with functions previously performed by the State Police, the National Gendarmerie and the Financial Police: immigration, border control, airport security, maritime policing, fighting public corruption, white-collar crime and money laundering and financial crimes.
Regarding the most important role that the old Gendarmerie has played since time immemorial, namely that of judicial police force and public security deployed throughout the territory (often in less-populated areas or areas far away from cities the only policing force was the National Gendarmerie), the reports and decisions taken by both the Central Government and the constituent Republics will decide the fate. In fact, the law provides that the Republics of Quanzar and Alaria both equip themselves with State Police Forces whose function within the respective state will be the exercise of the public security for the preservation of the public order, of the safety of the people and the patrimony, and therefore provides for the creation of a Federal Police of the Union which will be responsible for combating crimes against federal institutions, international drug trafficking, terrorism, cyber-crime, organized crime.

Within a couple of months, instead, the final vote of the Assembly is expected to approve the Recovery Plan Bill presented by the Government.
President Brunori della Scala has indicated the Recovery Plan as the first real step for the economic recovery of the country after more than a century of unstoppable decline that has caused all the economic and social indices of the country to collapse to levels not seen since at least the 43rd century.
The Recovery Plan takes into account the role of the constituent Republics, to which the responsibilities for public works, social activies, infrastructures are almost totally devolved, but the Brunori government has made the role of the federal government central by carefully specifying the areas in which federal funds can be invested with the creation of the Federal Committee for the Economic Coordination and Management whose role will be the coordination of economic efforts with local governments and the management of federal resources to be allocated to various projects.
Local governments will therefore be bound to follow the guidelines of the Recovery Plan if they wish to receive the federal funds made available, but these guidelines have nevertheless been outlined so that both constituent Republics can choose and direct their efforts taking into account the particularities and interests of their respective territories.
The Government, furthermore, in preparation of the Recovery Plan adopted several measures to reform and change the national legislation in order to introduce new liberal and pro-entrepreneurial policies, hoping to stimulate internal as well as foreign investments and improve the competitiveness.

President Brunori, at one of the last institutional appearances before the start of the election campaign, expressed all his satisfaction with the work done and the efforts of the central government:

The government of this country has really returned to exist and has started working again for the good of the whole country. After decades during which work was carried out only to divide, separate and weaken the country, this government was the first that really worked for the well-being of the country as a whole with the aim of rediscovering the cohesion which poisoned populism and radical ideologies have been denied for too long.

Only if we are more united and cohesive we will restore dignity and prosperity to the nation. We must stop seeing local interests and particularities as opposed to those of the country as a whole, we must rather realize that they coexist and also coincide. We have worked and committed ourselves to demonstrate this to the country and I believe that the country is reopening its eyes to this great truth after years of radical propaganda and demagogy that have had no qualms even in denying the historical reality and I believe that the internal evolution toward a certain moderation within the more radical between the independence parties (the Lega) demonstrates how much this political line has now lost its credibility.

But not only that, the formation of a new political party such as the Quanzar-Istalian Federalist Movement is a further sign of intolerance towards such a kind of politics and above all I see it as a denial of this extremist local nationalism that has led to the denial of the veritable Istalian reality and culture.
I hope it is a sign for a future full rehabilitation and re-institutionalization of the Istalian identity in the country.

In closing, the President therefore did not hide the hopes of working fruitfully with the new political party founded a few months ago which, although it presented itself as strongly federalist and autonomist movement, unlike the independence parties it did not deny its "istalianity" and indeed it seems be influenced by the positions supported by the President of Alaria Elisabetta Carillese, who in these five years has worked tirelessly on the island to "rediscover" the effective ubiquity between Istalian and Alarian identities, the latter in fact endowed with a certain less authority and credibility from a historical and social point of view compared to the Quanzari identity which, indeed, can boast centuries of effective historical and cultural tradition.

De Giacomo's last game
The former President of Alaria will play her last cards in these elections

Image

The once rising star of the Popular Front of Alaria, which led three consecutive absolute majorities on the island - from 5038 to 5049 - saw her brilliance fade when, after the snap elections of 5049, she lost the island's government to Identity and Unity and went on to lead the opposition. Now, after a legislature in the opposition, Mia De Giacomo faces her last test.

De Giacomo was re-elected this morning as the candidate for the presidency of the Alarian Republic thanks to the votes of the militants, while among the ranks of the island's federation they were already beginning to talk about her moving aside and giving up her explicit support for a successor. However, she decided to appear in the primaries and has now been proclaimed the winner. However, she herself knows that these elections will be her litmus test: if she does not manage to regain the island's government for the FPdA, her political career in the leadership of the island's government will have come to an end.

For this reason, De Giacomo has started all her media power and her ability to connect with young people. Above all, she will base a large part of her campaign in the Nicoma region, where in the last elections she barely got 3% of the vote and was the region that ultimately gave the government to IeU. For these elections, De Giacomo has bet all the artillery to criticize the attempt at "recentralization" that, in her opinion, the IeU government is trying to carry out, under the pretext of a "false co-governance".

"This government is gradually approving laws that take power away from our two nations and return it to the unitary entity, in a crude attempt to rebuild an Istalia that has already disappeared. It does not matter with how many beautiful words it adorns its speech, because we see clearly their intentions. And let it be clear that we will oppose it tooth and nail. "

In this way, De Giacomo unifies her speech with the new leader of the Popular Front of Alaria, who is expected to start an aggressive electoral campaign in the coming days with which he tries to recover the government lost during the last elections.
