Local Constituencies Results

After a term coined by many as the beginning of the 'Rodier era', with the UpL reversing policies in favouring international co-operation and environmental protection, Maxime Rodier has again been elected as the High Chancellor of Lourenne. With a slightly reduced majority in the Royal Assembly, the UpL lost seats in Louives' east to the PR. The swing seat of Lake (O4) in Outannais was also flipped to the PR. This election also saw the creation of the conservative Action Nationale (AN). For many in the party, the UpL has become a party attacked on both flanks, on its economic front by the PR, and its social front by the AN. The next election maybe the biggest threat to the party's long-running governance of the nation yet.

The Action National's rise as a nationalist alternative to the UpL has led to an electoral wipeout of the party in the Assembly. The party has slipped from a majority 54% of the vote to only 31%, retaining only 14 of its local constituency seats, while the mayorship of both La Valois and Iztapalata was lost to AN. In response to the abysmal election results, UpL leader and high chancellor Maxime Rodier has called for the Republicans to support a 'grand coalition' that would continue the current UpL-PR government. He has also threatened that if the PR refuses to back the current government, and wishes to make itself the leading party, the UpL will exit from the coalition. Many party members are now looking towards a change of leadership, removing Rodier and possibly returning to the party's left-wing, environmentalist and internationalist roots. However, Rodier is adamant on keeping his position as leader, as well as his chancellorship in this time of political upheaval.

AN jubilant after 4593 elections

The leader of the Action National, Henri de Lambord-Montpelier, has called for the government's resignation after the 4593 elections led to the UpL losing its absolute majority for the first time in 35 years. "Madame Rodier should face the facts; the country wants change", was his first comment after the full results had been announced. The AN's results exceeded its own expectations, according to insiders, and seem a vindication of the party's hardline stance on social issues and constitutional reform.

Nevertheless, the party's chances to get into power seem slim, given its lack of a prospective coalition partner. This might not be entirely negative for it, though, according to Roger Nostin, professor of history at the University of Iztapalata:

The result will almost certainly result in some sort of UpL-PR arrangement, although of what kind - and how stable - remains an open question. Also the Action is probably slightly disappointed at their narrow failure to exceed a third of the seats, which would otherwise have granted them a constitutional veto. Nevertheless, the consequence might benefit the AN in the long term, since it can now position itself as the sole voice of opposition to a troubled UpL-PR marriage of convenience.

Iztapalata- The AN has proven itself a worthy challenger to the UpL-PR two-party system that has existed since 4573. Celebration occurred at the PR HQ in Iztapalata as news came in that the party had emerged on top in the election. Party chairwoman Marie Barnette has contacted the office of Maxime Rodier to discuss a future PR-lead coalition as to ensure the continuation of democracy in the country. Party leader Patrick Colbert, the possible successor to Rodier will also be present in any PR-UpL meeting regarding the future leadership of the grand coalition.

The 4596 election has seen a further shrinkage of the UpL, as the AN rises to top the polls. The failure to pass a new coalition bill in the last 3 years due to Maxime Rodier's firm disapproval to a PR-led coalition, and the Republicans' reluctance to seek a coalition with the AN has been the main topic of the election, leading to the AN's continued rise in political prominence. However, High Chancellor Rodier is now under huge pressure from the party membership, and a vote to oust the leader is currently underway in the UpL.

AN tops national polls as political turmoil in UpL intensifies

Iztapalata- The AN continues to rise in national politics as they have risen to the top of national polls. Meanwhile, the UpL is in the midst of a possible coup as the party scrambles to remove party leader Maxime Rodier. For this reason the PR has embarked on a heavy ad campaign targeting UpL party members to hopefully convince them to elect a more PR-friendly leader who is open to the idea of a Lourennais republic.

The PR however, is in the midst of massive reform as calls for a leadership election intensify. Party chairwoman Maria Barnette has announced that starting after the next general election, the party will hold a leadership election to decide the next chairman and the next party/candidate for High Chancellor. Marie Barnette has stated that this would allow the diverse makeup of the party to better express their opinions about the future path of the party.

UpL nears collapse

Maxime Rodier outside High Chancellor's Office

While UpL enters its third term as the nation's smallest parliamentary party, Maxime Rodier has fended off leadership challenges at an increasingly aggressive manner. Since the last election in 96', party membership has fallen by 12% as unloyal members are sacked from the party, meanwhile 5 consecutive motions to call a leadership election has been defeated by Rodier using his powers as the party's leader. However, this all seems to have brought the party to a breaking point. Last week, all cabinet ministers from the UpL resigned against Rodier's decision to ban all leadership contests for the next six years. This has left the cabinet half empty with the remaining PR ministers and civil servants struggling to keep the government up and running. Inside the party, many new political organizations are in the pipelines, such as Food and Agriculture minister Roger Boudon's 'Ro.generation' and Health minister Amina Barkindo's National Healthcare Link. However, whether any of these movements will gain traction is still largely unknown. Rodier must now carefully judge and act, to balance between maintaining his leadership, and keeping the party from falling apart.

The 4599 election has seen a rebound for the Parti Republicain. Following the party's push for a republican agenda, the general public has bought on to the message and voted for the PR, triggering a further loss in votes for the UpL, which has suffered a mild decline for the last 9 years. The UpL, however, remains as a key minority party as neither AN nor PR can govern without its support.

PR approaching majority

Iztapalata- The PR continues to climb in national election polls as the AN and the UpL continue to decline at the ballot box for the second election in a row. Newly re-elected party chairwoman Marie Barnette hopes to gain the majority next election and set the country on the path to what she calls a "republican revolution". Calls from PR assemblymen/woman for High Chancellor Maxime Rodier intensify as the UpL dips below 30% of the vote.

PR 4604 Leadership Election

Image

Iztapalata- The second PR leadership election has ended with the re-election of the two leading incumbents party chair Marie Barnette and party leader Alexandre DuPont. Both stand for similar issues and are leading into what is likely to be a historic election. The next election has the possibility of being the first election in which a party other than the now irrelevant UpL holds the majority in the Royal Assembly in nearly 30 years. Marie Barnette has led the party since its foundation in 4573 and has seen its ups and downs. The veteran politician has said that she hopes that a PR-led government will "lead the country in a new era of prosperity and a rebirth for Lourennais democracy".

The nation is watching closely the next election and many hope that a republic would be established under a future PR government.
