Suspected Chemical Sites Destroyed By Fire
July 4491

Three of the sites suspected of being the locations of the Barmenistan chemical weapon development and storage sites have been destroyed in a set of mysterious fires. The Barmenistani military police arrested more than a dozen suspects for "arson and vandalism." The Government has refused to comment on how these supposed suspects managed to locate and enter the heavily guarded sites in the northern mountains. All three sites were to be the main focus of a highly anticipated World Congress investigation into the country's supposed ownership and use of chemical weapons

World Congress Special Representative to Barmenia, Amma Tembo called on the Government to "take utmost effort towards preserving all military sites until the WC's expected investigation is through." The government rejected her request for a WC investigation into the cause of the fires as "mockery" and has called for her replacement.

More breathless, blue-skinned Kathurans in hospitals

Hospitals in the northern parts of the island of Kathuristan have reported new cases of "breathless, blue-skinned patients". St Eksandr Memorial Hospital said it had admitted more than 150 new patients in the past two weeks while a number of other hospitals have reported similar numbers. The Government has declared a state of environmental emergency, blaming the latest development on the "ongoing industrial pollution disaster" and attributed the blue skin to a "popular temporary skin-tanning craze." An environmental officer who questioned this pointing out that the rate of cases seems to have increased rather than decreased as would be expected in the case of an industrial accident was denounced to a Popular Revolutionary Tribunal for "sabotage", leading many other experts to remain silent on the matter.

Video Captures Supposed Chemical Attack
January 4493

The regime's "industrial accident" smokescreen has been torn apart by the release of a new video chronicling what appears to be the latest chemical attack in a small restive town called Malika. A Gaduri tourist visiting the island shot the video on her smartphone through her hotel room window. The video captured several women and children screaming and tearing their clothes in the town centre as a yellow cloud rose out of a number of military airplanes circling the town. According to the tourist Jessica Ventura, there were dozen of bodies littered over the streets when she and her fellow hotel occupants returned from a shelter

The government dismissed the video as a fake created in a Vanukean or Istalian movie studio. It has stuck to its industrial accidents explanation for the huge rise in hospital admissions in the Malika area, many of the admitted exhibit blue tinged skin and severe breathing difficulties. Foreign intelligence experts estimate that this is perhaps the 42nd chemical attack carried out in Kathuristan in the past 3 years with casualties anywhere between 15,000 and 50,000 dead and as many 200,000 injured. Despite the attacks, the Apostolic Army and its affiliates remain active and said to have killed as many as 200 Barmenistani security officials since their return in 4492.

Tawaryan: Poverty Eradicated
August 4494

Shophet Levon Tawaryan has proclaimed Barmenistani to be "free of poverty". Tawaryan said that Barmenistan had eradicated poverty in the decade since the Social Revolution took place. According to government figures, not a single person could be found who lived on less than 1 LOD a day in the whole of the country. The same figures say that inequality has dropped to such levels that the top 0.6% now only own 2.5% of all national wealth. Extreme poverty is said to have fallen from 28% in 4480.

A recently demolished informal settlement

The progress against extreme poverty was achieved due to considerable redistributory efforts carried out by the Tawaryan government. Public spending has been doubled in the past decade while social programs are more generously funded than ever before, with several new ones introduced. As for inequality, Tawaryan himself gleefully acknowledged that his regime had "buried many rich thieves and speculators." The introduction of a steeply progressive income tax regimen along with the nationalisation of much of the private sector have all helped in this shift towards a more equal society.

World Congress Special Representative Amma Tembo welcomed the "very significant reductions in poverty and inequality in extreme poverty Barmenistan." Implicitly contradicting Shophet Tawaryan, Tembo said that there remains a considerable amount of relative poverty which the Social Republic still needed to address. Other commentators have questioned the validity of the statistics and the timing of the announcement - the regime faces unprecedented international criticism and the threat of foreign intervention over its alleged chemical weapons program and use.

BSNP Loses Power
March 4496

The BSNP has been defeated in a snap election, losing to the Barmenistani Conservatives who won 62% of the vote. The BSNP's thirteen year tenure has ended with the aged party leadership choosing to go into opposition rather than resist as they once did in 4490. General Secretary Levon Tawaryan is now 77 years old while several members of the National Party Command are now in their mid to late 70's as well.

Other than an exchange of sharp words with the incoming administration, very little resistance has been offered. Tawaryan threatened to start a civil war if the Conservatives try to "ruin the country" but it is not clear that the party's militia are being prepared for any such thing. Still the party will remain a force of nature with strong structures in the north east of the country and remarkable funds, a 4.5 million membership (expected to shrink significantly in opposition) and an opportunity to renew itself.

State Within A State
BSNP Grows As Government Shrinks Public Spending
May 4499

The opposition Barmenistani Social Nationalist Party has found itself assuming a role in Barmenistani not too different from that of a state. This development follows the conservative government's frantic privatisation and austerity programs which have seen many poor Barmenistanis lose several welfare benefits and public sector guaranteed jobs.

In opposition, party Gen Sec Levon Tawaryan has overseen the expansion of party's programs which go way beyond the traditional areas of political activity. He has begun a Free Breakfast Program which feeds some 50,000 children in the rural parts of Barmenistan. It has established dozens of small clinics in remote and densely populated areas. Several job-training and small business funding schemes have also been created, benefiting tens of thousands of Barmenistanis. The party has also launched a private television and radio station BSNN and BSNNR which of course never fails to remind the masses of "the wickedness of the corrupt, looting beksrmko class and its stooge government."

The party has kept its militias intact although there has been little conflict on this. The BSNP's formidable 2 million membership lists and a network of co-operatives and other less respectable businesses pay for these acts of political philanthropy.

"Hands Off Pontesi" Protests

Thousands of BSNP members and other sympathisers have held rallies all across Barmenistan in support of Pontesi's "right to self-defence." Pontesi has come under significant international pressure over its domestic and defence policies. The Sekhmet rally was addressed by Gen. Sec. Tawaryan who called on party member to volunteer to fight for Pontesi's freedom form the globalist order - a call answered by some 4,671 protesters. Tawaryan has spent a considerable amount of time building relations with the Pontesian government, a task made easier with Tawaryan being an ethnic Arev Mardik like the majority of Pontesian leaders are.

BSNP Returns To Power
June 4537

Four decades after losing power, the Barmenistan Social Nationalist Party has returned to office. In what analysts have described as "the most violent election in recent history", the BSNP led by its founder Levon Tawaryan's daughter Tamar, swept all the seats and any who were brave enough to run against the party's candidates found themselves assailed with violence, intimidation and unrestrained smear campaigns.

Image
Tamar Tawaryan surrounded by BSNP supporters

The story of the restoration of the party was one of diehard supporters and the Tawaryan working over the past 40 years to keep the memory of the party's achievements and to maintain its extensive network of social services intact. When Levon Tawarayan died in 4500, the party chose his deputy Bhtjar Jrka as the new leader. Jrka and many BSNP leaders left the country and ran their party operations from abroad. Jrka died in 4522 where his predecessor's daughter Tamar Tawaryan was chosen as the party's new General Secretary. As Barmenistan became more politically unstable in the late Twenties, many wondered if the old BSNP could have a political role once again. It began re-assembling its political machine slowly and in 4537 it finally felt strong enough to take power, succeeding.

Tawaryan: Libertarians "Stirring Up" Bihezi Tribes
November 4538

Barmenia's new leader Tamar Tawaryan has accused "globalist libertarians" of encouraging a growing revolt among Bihezi tribes located in the central parts of the country. Tawaryan said that several prominent libertarians had been travelling around the area, railing against the country's new government as tyrannical and encouraging the tribal leaders to reject Social Nationalism and return to their time honoured traditions of limited government and local autonomy.

Several Bihezi tribes have renounced their loyalty to the Barmenian state in recent weeks, citing the "tyranny of the Social Nationalists" as a major reason. Many have painful memories of oppression during the first Social Nationalist government and fear a return to collectivisation and domination by the hated Arev Mardik minority which many of the Social Nationalist leaders hail from. The tribes are believed to be arming with the help of their "libertarian friends" who are connecting them to underground arms suppliers. The most prominent of these libertarians is Qadir Alaka, a world renowned campaigner for liberty from the old days of the first SocNat administration.

Compromise With Tribal Leaders
July 4539

Barmenistani leader Tamar Tawaryan has reached an agreement with dozens of Bihezi tribal leaders ending an eight month conflict in the heart of the country. Around 500 Barmenistani were killed in the relatively low-intensity conflict. In the central Barmenistani city of Ol'itá, Tawaryan and several tribal delegates agreed to devolve power on personal law to tribal authorities, an increase in the budgetary allocations for those authorities and increased pensions for tribal chieftains. The tribesmen agreed to lay down their arms and have accepted the rule of the Social Nationalists.

Analysts have generally praised Tawaryan's "pragmatic approach" to the tribal rebellion. Many pointed out that her father Levon would "likely have bombed the tribal areas to oblivion" The analysts' view seem to reflect those of the public - the current SocNat regime has avoided antagonising the public and has not followed the radical economic "democratisation" plan followed by the old regime. Where there are problems, Tawaryan and her ministers has generally increased public spending instead of adopting more purely ideological methods of resolving the issue.

Rapprochement?
Barmenistan Strikes Deal With Vanuku On Relations
July 4543

Barmenistan's leader Shophet Tamar Tawaryan has initiated the first high level contact between her country and neighbouring Vanuku in 59 years. Mrs Tawaryan led a high powered delegation of several senior Ministers, advisors and businesspeople on her first state visit to Wiel, Vanuku. Relations between the two countries have been practically non-existent since 4483 when the first Social Nationalist regime expelled all Vanukeans from the country and nationalised all their property. The two countries nearly went to war in the mid 4480s over Barmenistan's alleged human rights violations, tensions which resulted in Barmenistan pulling closer to Deltaria and joining the Consortium Alliance.

Image

It seems Mrs Tawaryan and her Ministers have decided that it is better to have friendly relations with the country's powerful southern neighbour. In early 4485 she directed her top foreign affairs advisor and son, Levon Tawaryan-Agha to sound out the Vanukeans. They appeared flexible enough and over two years, the two countries worked on what finally became the Vanukean-Barmenistani Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Development.

In the agreement, Vanuku agrees to provide 1.5 billion LOD yearly for the next decade to fund various Barmenistani development programmes. In return, Barmenistani agreed to "refrain from undertaking activities which would undermine the internal security of either country", a term thought to be directed at crushing its dormant alliance with Deltaria once and for all. It is understood that several informal agreements were reached, such as Barmenistan pledging to grant expelled Vanukeans a right to return and possible compensations for lost property down the line.
