Bidlis Succeeds Gido as Shophet

Sékhmet Grand Vizier Sinan Bidlis has been elected Shophet of Barmenistan. The election was triggered by the death of Shophet Tahir Gido who had served in the position for 36 years with Bidlis as his Grand Vizier throughout his entire team. The duo managed to considerably tame the dysfunctionality of the Barmenistani political system. Bidlis, 72 succeeded as Shophet in an acting capacity on September 5 and as per the nation's Basic Law, an election was held within a month in which he ran unchallenged.

He had however been challenged in his bid to represent the Barmenistani National Congress in the election. The late Shophet's son Tahir Gido Jr presented his own candidacy to the party presenting a manifesto of change and favouring federalism and economic liberalism. He was soundly defeated at the special party congress held on September 10 where Bidlis was endorsed by 649 of the 713 delegates. Gido Jr denounced the result as "borne out of bribery" and accused the then Acting Shophet of buying the position.

Revenue Authority Launches Investigation Into Shophet's Election Rival

Sékhmet The National Revenue Authority has launched an investigation into the tax affairs of Tahir Gido Jr. The defeated Shophetal candidate has been accused of tax evasion amounting to as much 30 million LOD over the past fifteen years.Terevan Amsa the head of the Authority dismissed claims that the move was politically motivated as Gido himself has alleged. Gido has so far refused to accept his defeat and apparently also rejected any offer to become Grand Vizier. The offer had been peddled by party elders who sought to limit the ongoing internal dissension over the succession to Shophet Gido Snr.

Gido Jr "Hounded Into Exile"

Sékhmet, Sisle Tahir Gido Jr has issued a statement declaring himself to having been "hounded into exile." Gido Jr posted a short video on his social media accounts from an unknown location just hours after the National Revenue Authority released a damning report recommending criminal prosecution for his alleged tax evasion. The most popular social media sites have proved to be inaccessible in the past twenty four hours something with a spokesman for the Vizierate of Science of Technology described as "a nationwide technical fault caused by long planned system upgrades." Many were quick to point out that government websites remain functional though they had shut down their comment sections after a flurry of negative comments discussing the Gido tax scandal.


Two Killed In Intra-Militia Clash

Baotap, Ufne Two civilians were killed last night in a clash between members of the Bao Krt (Blue Wolves) The unfortunate incident occurred in the Baotap clan community located in the south east of the country. It happened at a local wedding when after heavy consumption of koumis (fermented yak milk) members of two clans began arguing over precedece in the wedding parade. Clan elders mediated and the dispute appeared resolved until one of the disputants Jezkai Omrsmrko Vrn began firing his weapon during the parade which was responded to with return fire from members of the other clan. This led to the two deaths and forty three were injured. All fighters were members of Jelbic militia the Blue Wolves who operate in the area and subsist on "tribute" paid by local businesses and citizens along with the occassional bank robbery. The militia is estimated to have between 300 and 600 members. The Shophet condemned the violence and promised a full investigation and prosecution of all involved.

Barmenistan Seeks Assurances From Pontesi

Sékhmet, Sisle Barmenistan's Vizier for External Affairs Abram Jezkar has engaged the Nationalist government of Pontesi following its "declaration of nuclear capabilities" Jezkar wrote his Pontesian counterpart Martin Lemanyan seeking "clarity on the new government's intentions". The Arev Mardik nationalist government is viewed by Sekhmet as a potential threat particulary with its Barmenistani Arev Mardik minority which amounts to at least 4% of the total population - a figure rising to nearly 15% in the north eastern governorate of Murdhe which borders Pontesi. Jezkar also said that the Barmenistani government has not yet been able to verify if Pontesi' nuclear claims are true.


Government Deploys Extra Security Forces Into Troubled Baotap

Baotap, Ufne Shophet Sinan Bidlis has ordered the deployment of several hundred members of internal security forces into the violence plagued south eastern clan community of Baotap. The move follows upon the death of what is now 34 citizens in a raging conflict between factions of the Blue Wolves militia. This was sparked by a wedding massacre last year where two were killed and several dozen injured. Much of the small town centre in the clan territory has been abandoned as residents have fled in the surrounding rural areas from what seems to be endless gunfire between the rival factions. The clan territory's lawlessness has been boosted by the relatively porous portion of the border with Vanuku which has seen the area develop into a smuggling hotspot.

Two Detained For Defence Memo Leak

Sékhmet, Sisle Two mid ranking civil servants working within the Ministry of Defence have been detained for questioning by security forces following what the Majatran Times described as the "worst corruption scandal in the country". The two Emed Kshvrn and Alisa Puabi are believed to have released 23 classified memos without official authorisation. The memos detail the progress of the defence upgrading program which was launched in 5328. One memo estimates that between 40 and 65% of the allocated funds including aid from Zardugal may have been misappropriated or otherwise spent. It also listed names of high ranking officials who are suspected of having taken part in the corruption A spokesman for the Defence Ministry dismissed the memos as "tampered documents concocted by "public enemies and known factionalists." The scandal has broken out in a sensitive period where Barmenistan has expressed grave concerns about its north eastern neighbour Pontesi's rumoured nuclear program.

Sékhmet, Sisle In a stunning political development, Shophet Sinas Bidlis has recalled his longtime political rival Tahir Gido Jr from exile. Bidlis, 83 pardoned Gido Jr of the tax evasion conviction he received while in exile.Gido Jr spent several years in a number of far eastern nations such as Bianje, Kimlien and Tropica.

The Shophet apparently initiated secret negotiations with Gido Jr eighteen months ago sending his niece Shireen as First Secretary at Barmenistan's Embassy in Kimlien. There, Shireen met with Gido Jr on several occasions.

The Shophet personally welcomed Gido Jr at the Queen Sarah International Airport. embracing him and proclaiming him the prodigal son of the ruling party while hundreds of party members looked on and cheered. Gido Jr has been appointed Grand Vizier and Second Secretary of the ruling party. The Shophet's granddaughter Salima is set to marry the new Grand Vizier's second born son Jalil.

The Shophet's moves have left many mystified. Sources from within his government say the Shophet was motivated by three reasons. The first was the ongoing and very high tensions between Barmenistan's powerful neighbours Vanuku and Beiteynu. The Shophet apparently worries that his country could be come a pawn or staging around for escalation. The second was the Shophet's eagerness to reunite the party and strengthen it by creating a powerful family dominating a powerful big-tent national party. The third reason is said to be his personal health and advanced age. It has been whispered among the country's political elites that the Shophet has been suffering from early stage stomach cancer.

The Shophet has kept his cards close to his chest and has refused to confirm if he will stand for a third six year term as Shophet later this year in October.
