Karzan elected President, BLP sweeps Parliamentary elections
Late Edition | April, 5252

Bihezi rallying around the election of Karzan as President and the BLP.

The coalition of political groups that met to form the Barmenian Liberation Party in January, 5252 was lead by none other then noted political and social activist Daner Karzan who had been a leading figure in Barmenian politics for quite sometime prior to that. Karzan, a paramilitary fighter that engaged in fighting in Kathuristan against Kathuran paramilitaries, was a celebrated political reformer who had decried the corrupt and ineffective government throughout Barmenistan's very storied history. Karzan called together a coalition of primarily left-wing Barmenian parties and organizations that wanted to reform a democratic republic in Barmenistan and the dream came to reality in February when the parties that had met a month prior agreed to enter into a coalition to form the Barmenian Liberation Party. Karzan, a political reformer announced that the National Assembly would be reforged into the Barmenian Parliament at the behest of many requests of the varied coalition. An interim Parliament was formed in March, 5252 and approved the new Constitution of the Republic of Barmenia/Republic of Barmenistan which formed the Office of the President of the Republic of Barmenia which Karzan was elected to. Karzan served as the interim President of the State of Barmenia and the Speaker of the interim Parliament.

One token of President Karzan's message was the appointment of Hewaxan Blîmet, the Director of the Bihezi Institute of Social and Cultural Sciences, as the new Minister of Education and Culture and directed him to focus on the "Restoration of Bihezi Culture" and the formal re-establishment of the variety of Bihezi based cultural names and organization. "The Bihezi are the found upon which Barmenistan is built on. We are the founders of Ahmadism, we are the builders of the Majatran empire, we must absolutely understand that it is our culture and our right to reintroduce widespread Bihezi culture." The President reiterated the respect for Kathuran and Brmek culture but noted that past conflicts between the Kathuran and Brmek cultures provide significant problems that must be bridged over in the future. The President also announced the immediate formation of a Security Council led by veteran intelligence service officer Şemzîn Zamo as the Chairman of the Security Council. The President directed the Security Council to cooperate with the new Minister of Defense, retired General Heliz Serdar, to reform the Barmenian Armed Forces. While the focus on rebuilding the armed forces is paramount to the President, the rebuilding of the Barmenian economy is also paramount.

"Barmenia has vast reserves of iron, helium with reserves of sulfur and silicon. We must harness these natural resources and turn them into products and resources that our nation can utilize to rebuild itself." The President announced that he had appointed Dilgerm Befraw as the new Minister of Finance, notably to reform the large-scale tax abuses and corruption that have plagued Barmenian public life for decades. "Finance Minister Befraw will cooperate with the Ministry of the Interior as well other law enforcement agencies in Barmenia." The President announced that the Minister of the Interior reformed the National Police (Bihezi: Polîsê Neteweyî; PN) and the Internal Security Agency (Bihezi: Ajansa Ewlekariya Navxweyî; AEN) and placed both underneath the authority of the Ministry of the Interior and the oversight of Minister of the Interior Cengo Ajda.

Economic Reform Act ushers in new era of private ownership.
Late Edition | March, 5253

Minister of Finance Dilgerm Befraw announced that, underneath the President's orders, the Central Bank of Barmenistan had been overhauled and reformed. Evraz Nûşen, the newly minted Governor of the Central Bank of Barmenistan, announced that the Barmenian Parliament had formalized began the process of privatization of all banking in Barmenia. "While we understand that the government must have a guiding hand in regulation of the banking industry, the government should not and can not own and operate all banks. In cooperation with the Barmenian Parliament and President Karzan, we have formally began the process of privatization." The reform of the banking sector in Barmenistan is part of a wider economic reform within the nation, notably aimed at riding the country of the so-called "...shackles of the past." This reform also includes a prohibition that the government cannot interfere in the operation of the Central Bank of Barmenistan. The reform aims to privatize large swathes of the Barmenian economy, something that will surely shock the Barmenian economy over the next several years. Finance Minister Befraw also noted that in the upcoming session of the Parliament, the MPs will vote on the Union Reform and Empowerment Act, something that has drawn significant opposition from the capitalist flank of the BLP. The act will empower unions, grant unions and employers the right to collectively bargain as well as other updates and improvements to unions and union rights.

In addition to reforms related to the Central Bank and economy, the President signed legislation reforming the administrative apparatus of the state. The President spoke a conference at the University of Sehkmet's Institute of International Affairs in which he discussed the final formation of the Majatran Cooperation Council. The President, joined by the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and Vice President and Chairman of the Presidential Council, discussed the importance of Ahmadi and Majatran nations come together to finally cooperate on issues that they face. "We must address the issues facing a thoroughly Ahmadi continent and we must connect with each other to ensure that in the future we have a unified face when dealing with issues of regional and international importance. We're going to forge lasting partnerships with our allies in the region and across the world."

Gido Sworn In As Shophet
Late Edition | March, 5253

Prominent lawyer Tahir Gido has been sworn in as Shophet of Barmenistan - the first substantive Barmenistani head of state elected in 64 years. Gido, 51 was summoned back home by popular demand from Whale Island where he had been serving in the World Congress secretariat. The prestige of his position led local power brokers tired of the seemingly endless political dysfunction in the country to make a proposition to him.

Led by the youthful Mayor of the capital Sekhmet, Sinan Bidlis, 36, a delegation of political players flew to Whale Island and pleaded with Gido to "enter the fray". According to an attendee of the meeting, Gido expressed reluctance at first, changing his mind only where the delegates solemnly vowed to obey and cooperate. Soon after the delegates declared their intention to found a new party the Barnenistani National Congress which swept the elections on a deliberately vague platform.

Barmenistan despite its lengthy period with caretaker and technocratic governments is prospering. Its economy has grown steadily if not impressively over the decades. The country's biggest earner, it's tourism sector has continued expanding as pilgrims from across Terra visit the home of several religions including Ahmadism (OOC: Islam, Felinism and the Ruhi faith (OOC: Baha'i) Lovely old building, testament to the country's many cultures and historical empires grace many of its coastal cities while the interior remains largely rural and dotted with charming market towns.

Sectarian violence and other forms of confrontation have steadily reduced. Many Barmenistanis have been heard to whisper that the present calm and prosperity is due to the lack of squabbling and corrupt pols.

Botched Paramilitary Reform Shatters Sardar Cabinet

Sékhmet THe resignation of Grand Vizier Rebaz Sardar and all three Kathuran (OOC: Assyrian) Viziers has plunged Barmenistan into a serious political crisis. The resignation came after months of fierce intra-party conflict over Shophet Tahir Gido's push to regulate the country's seemingly innumerable paramiltaries The Paramilitaries Regulation Bill which proposed a vast new regulatory framework for all known paramilitaries, registered and unregistered was rejected by the legislature with 78 votes in favour versus 132 against. The entire 50 strong member Kathuran delegation voted against the Bill particularly after His Highest Holiness the Patriarch Nemrud XVI, head of the Barmenian Orthodox Church condemned the Bill as 'pure enslavement' and warned Kathurans and other Hosians of the 'futility of submission to the State which only ever earned our flock great pain in the old days.'

While the Kathurans are the most vocally opposed, other minorities such as the Brmek and Arev Mardik along with various religious sects have expressed their opposition as well. Traditionalists oppose the proposed reform, proud of the country's long established tradition of a decentralised warrior caste and fear of an over mighty national government. The Shophet remains defiant and defended his proposed reform condemning the "dangerous status quo of armed men answerable to non-state actors" The Kathuran political establishment are refusing to collaborate on forming a new government with some even calling for the Shophet to resign.

Shophet Declares State of Emergency

Sékhmet Shophet Tahir Gido has declared a nationwide state of emergency. The move follows eight months of political paralysis following the collapse of Grand Vizier Rebaz Sardar's cabinet and a near complete political boycott by Kathuri leaders. Announcing the move on BNTV, Gido said the country required a brief period of "strong administration" While there have been no reports of politically motivated violent incidents, several protests have been held since the botched paramilitary reform in November. The enabling Act was passed amidst fierce debate though it ultimately passed easily due to the Kathuri legislators' ongoing boycott 126-67.

The country's several dozen militia are thought to have a combined force of up to 120,000 men compares to the Barnenistani national army's 73,000 strong force. Most are sect and ethnic based, mobilised in the nation's various segregated communities. Few Barmenistani wander outside their local neighbourhoods with violence an explicit and ever present reality for those who dare do so.

Shophet Declares State of Emergency

Sékhmet Shophet Tahir Gido has announced that fourteen militia have signed voluntary cooperation agreements with the Barmenistani state. The militia will receive "training subsidies" from the State and carry out their operations "in coordination with the Government." The move is part of the Shophet's ambitious agenda to centralise and reform the Barmenistani armed forces with the aim of marginalising and possibly absorbing the country's estimated 80-90 militia groups. As part of this plan, 150 Zardic soldiers arrived in the country last week to train the local army. Gido has declared his ambition to double the size of the Barmenistani Ground Forces and police force over the coming decade.

Kathuri Cities Announce "Autonomy Referendum"
Ur Bahra At an annual conference of Kathuri local government leader, Mayor Sargon Nezzar of Korat announced that 51 cities and towns in Kathuristan and Arhe have signed a declaration of intent to hold a "nationwide" referendum on autonomous governance for Kathuristan in the next five years. Mayors from Afre which forms part of the Afre and Kathuristan governorate abstained from voting, some loudly denouncing the move.

Kathuristan is the most culturally, ethnically and religious unique part of Barmenistan being largely inhabited by Hosians who identify emotionally more with Cildania where their ancestor hailed from than Bihezi (OOC: Kurdish) majority mainland Barmenistan. In the 48th century the isle suffered chemical attacks from the Social Nationalist Government an event largely described as an attempted genocide by scholars The Shophet has denounced the announcement as "a chauvinistic and pointless development" and pledged to uphold the indivisibility of the Barmenistani state as per his inauguration oath.

Militia Warns Beiteynu

The head of the Northern Wolves Grzkai Barzani has issued a warning to the Beiteynuese government which has apparently deployed more troops along it's border with Barmenistan in anticipation of increased instability. Barzani, who claims to command a militia numbering some 3,000 Wolves said that his militia which is located just west of the border would increase its patrols and "destroy Beiteynu without any mercy if it makes any aggressive moves. Ranting on his weekly podcast, he blamed Beiteynu's conduct on "monopoly capital and money men's hunger for world control."
